Every now and then a guy makes a video that’s a massive help to everyone. Here is that video. I suspect my pump isn’t playing ball and I’ve just plugged my car into record some data and my numbers are all high like yours before you cleaned the pump. I’ll service it all up and take another reading and hope the drop to as low as yours. Thanks so much for showing us not only the practical side of the service but the data and what to look for.

hey ian, yeah its all pretty obvious why these things fail from what we saw in the vid, but it seems to me the manufacturers are walking away from longevity of components by negating a replaceable filter in this new and 'improved' version. Makes you wonder the way things are progressing or not. cheers dave

Great video, I have the haldex 5 system on a volvo xc60 and it's pretty much identical, same strainer on the pump instead of a filter, and mine was gummed up too. The information about how hard the pump was working before the service was very interesting, yet most manufacturers don't have cleaning the strainer as part of the servicing.

@@kinrade12hi. It’s been a while since I done it. From memory getting the control module off was a pain, Dave was right in his video. Found loads of gunk on pump filter (mines was attached to pump). I just rinsed through with water and let it dry out couple of hours or so. The housing for pump also had gunk it too. With Dave doing his video I would have had no idea this needed to be done, thanks again Dave. Ps I would leave a good 5 hours for a DIY like myself to do this. Hope that helps.

to take the pump out but couldn’t get the wiring clip off the module and the harness clip at the very top the the Haldex unit. Having watched your Video, I will endeavour next time to press the connector clip in and remove this connector. Hopefully that should free slack to get the top wiring harness clip out. It was great to see the voltage versus current display and how effective cleaning the pumps filter itself. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to shoot this video.

Really informative and thorough video which I’ve watched a few times now. It beggars belief that VW simply ignore this issue. I plan to undertake the work in the not too distant future but am only at 25,000 miles so in no major rush. I’m a DIY mechanic and don’t have a compressor to get residual oil out as you do. I wondered if it would be worth buying cans of compressed air to do this or if I should just make do with the drain down. Hardly worth buying a compressor as I have no real use for one or the spare space to store one. What do you think, would they be worth spending a few pounds on to get minor traces of old oil out?

    • @davesterl

i loved your idea to blow out the remaining old oil in the haldex with air 👌
i have a few questions; if i not miss understood you leaved the filter over night to dry up, i dont have time to leave the filter overnight due servicing the car at an service point, will it be a problem to blow the dirty parts away with an brake cleaner? how would you do that cleaning if its have to be done in short/limited time?
my second question; the Nm for the filler is 50, right? i am asking because it sounds like 15 Nm? and the washers will be renewed of booth filler an drain?

@@shotgunj1 , first, your T5 has a gen 4 Haldex, not a gen 5. So you still have oil filter to change when servicing.
For your problem, the fixing might be:
      - your haldex pump might be burned and not coupling the front with the rear diff by not making pressure to haldex clutch plates.
      - the little lever of the diff lock might be stucked with dirt or mud (it is located on the top of the diff, under a little white plastic vacuum reservoir).
Also, check the rubber protection that sorrounds the lever, as this is always getting cracked over time. So that will get rust.
      - the third and the most common issue (I also had it) are the 2 vacuum solenoids located under your car, under the front left seat. Search on the net for "differential lock pressure solenoid" , they are made by Pierburg , the code is 150804-HCIAJIAEA-00ACF, around 50 euro each. Change them both, for your peace of mind, even only one might be broken.
If you can't find them, just start from the rear diff and follow the 3-4 mm diameter plastic pipes (green and blue) that goes on the left of the car. You will find the solenoids for sure, attached on a metal bracket.
It is adviced to lock the rear diff from time to time for the solenoids to properly work.
I know I wrote this 9 monts later, but maybe you still need it, or anybody else..
      Good luck!
