Hi Guys! I see this video has become controversial which I think is a good thing. It gets the conversation going 😅 Just to reiterate a point I made in the video, I CAN NOT advise you on a scalp condition that has either been diagnosed or needs diagnosing. Please see a professional. We are all adults and it's okay to not agree with me or any of the other views in the comments but please be respectful of each other. Love you! xxx
Im sad it got controversial, you made it so clear that everyone should experiment whats work for them and this is what works for you :( oh well, ppl will always say something anyway. I love watching your videos
FusionofCultures Thank you... this video was an answer to prayers. I now know why my hair was doing the things you described. I did not grease my scalp this wash day, it's been 2 days and my scalp feels great. You have truly been a blessing.
I skip oiling my scalp in the summer and I start oiling it again in the winter. My scalp feels more balanced that way. Rosewater is also a favorite of mine all year round.
I've noticed that when I consistently drink 2 to 3 litres of water daily there is no flaking in my scalp. Very often issues the scalp needs healing from the inside and not on the outside. I also noticed less shedding and soft cottonish hair the moment I started drinking the recommended amount of water daily and believe me when I say my hair has been "rough and dry" since my natural journey started in 2015. Consistent water intake has been my solution.
true! I also experienced better scalp health and more importantly more growth when I improved my food (good nourishment and more water) and lifestyle habits! "healing from the inside and not on the outside." u r right on the point sis! thank for sharing, it can help someone around.
Here is what i have learnt. You do what needs to be done at that time in your life, sometimes what works now, won't tomorrow. And vice versa. Its a continuous cycle of taking away and adding to.
Alison Zunguze I'm so glad you said this because I recently started back greasing my scalp and hair grew so fast. Once upon a time I stopped doing it but going back to my roots is what worked FOR ME. Everybody needs to know just because others do it doesn't mean it will work for you. Thank you for that honest comment I've seen on here. 👏👏👏👏
well on my hair I use oils on hair I learned that from the women of Chad I don't put oil on my scalp but once every four or five days when I wash my hair might give myself a hot oil treatment or I may put some oil in my conditioner and give myself a hot oil treat a hot oil conditioning treatment whether it's protein condition or whatever I feel like that day but that's the only thing that I could say is don't clog up your pause on your head that's what might be affecting you and then you have to pay attention to the products that you use and I'm so glad that you found your problem because you would still be going on that was me it was my brown rice water and so that's why I know how you feel when you talk about scalp itching and I was using the white rice all the time washing it and everything and then I said oh brown rice might be better but it wasn't it had me running up and down in my house house or apartment scratching my scalp I couldn't hardly sleep because the itching of my scalp I didn't have dandruff or anything it's just that my scalp was allergic to it and even with me washing it and putting the Nim oil on it it's still it's me for maybe about a month before it really stopped but I learned my lesson and a lesson well-learned
AMEN. I stopped greasing my scalp when I was 16. I am now 37 and I still never grease my scalp. It was the best decision ever made. Once I stopped my hair started growing like crazy. I believe greasing my scalp was suffocating my pores... I encourage others to at least give it a shot. It may work for them too.
Yes, this is very true for me! I have to shampoo my hair every week especially when I use JBCO on my scalp. I also learned that I could not co-wash because it was not getting my scalp clean enough. My pores were blocked which meant that my hair growth was stunted. Have a clean and clear scalp is very important!
One thing to keep in mind is that plant oils are "technically" gels so they don't clog the scalp. Mineral-based products, on the other hand just lay there and ultimately keep moisture from penetrating the hair follicle.
This video made tons of sense. Thank you! I used to have an itchy scalp when I was in high school and it was always in the back/middle of head. I could never figure out what it was. It didn't matter if I oiled my scalp or if I didn't oil my scalp, the itchiness always came back so I just dealt with it because I didn't know what to do. Fast forward to 2015 when I was 21 years old and right after I did the big chop, I saw a video of a natural hair RUclipsr saying that she rinses her hair everyday and it has help her. (By the way, I've been natural all my life. I didn't do the big chop because I was relaxed. I did it because I damaged my hair from wearing box braid extension for 2 months in 2015 and when it was finally time to take out the braids, my hair was thin) - She said she has less tangles because everyday she removes shed hair because the longer you leave shed hair in your hair, the more tangled your hair becomes - she has a cleaner scalp because the water everyday is rinsing away something - sweat, dead skin cells, etc. - This increased the hair growth in her hair when she massaged her scalp every day in shower with water, this increases blood low to the follicles, which increases hair growth. Once a week she uses shampoo/conditioner. Because my hair was very short and it was summer (in 2015), I gave this regimen a try. My itchy scalp was gone so quickly. I guess it was because my scalp was always dry. I started in July 2015 and in March 2016 (8 months later), I gave myself a length check. Not only was my scalp no longer itchy to the daily wetting and shampoo/conditioner 1x a week, my hair grew so much! I think I gained 4 to 5 inches within those 8 months. When I stopped doing this regimen in September 2016 to January 2017, I noticed that my itchy scalp came back. I did only twist-outs within that 4 month time frame and the only time my scalp got water on it was 1x a week when I shampooed. I restarted this regimen (daily wetting) on January 16, 2017 and the itchiness is gone! I love this regimen because I have no tangles and my hair always feel moisturized. I have seen my hair grow the quickest with this regimen and I do believe it was because my scalp became a lot healthier.
I noticed the same for myself. Rinsing my hair and scrubbing my scalp (with just water) every day was great. For 3-4 months (during lockdown), I had absolutely no itching. It was eye-opening!
I do not understand the controversy under this post. everything said was clear and factual and she kept reiterating that it works for her! In fact, I think I've learned so much from this. thank you!
I was using a rice water rinse I was using rice white rice for all the time that I was doing it it's wonderful it it it didn't give me any or very little shedding but one day I had got a bright idea I had a little brown rice left and I saw that washed it offers and then I soaked it for approximately a day and a half and I put it in my hair and my scalp I thought after I finish washing my hair and everything and my head dry I wanted to run up and down my house screaming my scalp was itching me so bad I was allergic to the brown rice I could eat it but I just couldn't rinse my hair with it so I wind up using oil which they say it has a anti-inflammatory property and I use it as a hot oil treatment and then after that I would put some on my scalp every 3 or 4 days and it took it away within I think it was about a week and a half I had no more itching so I'm saying to some ladies that are talking about dandruff and itchy scalp it might be a product that you're using that your scalp is allergic to so check that out you know take one away one away until you find out what is going on
Hi, Laila! I've followed your advice and stopped "greasing" or oiling my scalp. I do oil treatments and scalp massages with oils but I make I wash my hair afterwards. I don't apply anything to my scalp anymore to just sit on my scalp and it has changed my hair. My scalp feels so light and it's always clean and dandruff free. It has been only a month now and I'm never turning back. Thanks again, and keep the videos coming. Take care and God bless you, girl
I need oil on my scalp bcuz my scalp is always dry. And if I don't moisturize my scalp I get flakes smh😐 I wish I was lucky enough to skip the step of putting oil on my scalp.
Angel Harmony My scalp used to be like this even after washing the next day it would be flaky ass hell. I started washing my hair (with clarifying shampoo) every week and discovered that I don't have dry flakes anymore. My hair is low porosity btw.
I know people avoid sulfate shampoos cause theyre drying to the hair but I actually discovered that they were what was causing my flakes and dry scalp so that may be something to consider. I have found that herbal or tea tree sulfate free shampoos used with a shampoo brush work the BEST for me!
I have a normally greasy scalp that gets dry in the Winter. A stylist even complained recently that my scalp was so dry. I tried conditioner cleansers, but my hair rebelled and my scalp was waxy. Then I tried using a skin friendly oil like jojoba, castor or Argan diluted with water and it helped with the flakiness, but my scalp still felt dehydrated. I then remembered how we "lotion" dry parts on our body and thought maybe my scalp would prefer a lotion. I began mixing the jojoba oil with a natural conditioner (no chemical ingredients) like kinky-curly knot today, elucence, mane Choice, or chatto 6 Plus diluted with water and applying that to my scalp with an applicator bottle. I did that two weeks in a row and my dry scalp has not returned since. If anyone has chronically dry scalp, this may be helpful to include in your routine on a regular basis.
I stopped applying oil on my scalp recently and it's no longer flaky or itchy. I actually stretched my wash day (cos I was lazy) and it was okay. Usually I wouldn't be able to manage cos of itchiness but the only time oil touches my scalp now is during my prepoo hot oil treatment.
peaceandcrosses same with me. Last month while doing the inversion method my scalp would itch and I'll scratched till I got sores. But otherwise I stopped using oils on my scalp about 3 or 4 months ago. But start realizing that the itchiness was caused by the oils the month before, but confirmed last month, with the inversion method.
Was it itchy at first? I JUST stopped the oil and it’s still itchy but I think I still need to get all the product buildup off and that may take a few more washes and my hair may need to get used to not having all that oil on it. Idk
One day i researched olive oil, randomly, and found that it has a natural compound in it that can cause itching. So, not even really meaning to, when i ran out of my olive oil, i didn't buy another bottle, and stopped scalp with it. About a year later, it finally dawned on me that my scalp wasn't itching as much, and it's because i stopped using it. I tested other oils on my scalp, and they don't make my hair itch, so i know it has to be olive oil. Also, i would like to put this info out there as well, as a kinky haired person, when your sebum does reach the ends of your hair, covering the entire hair strand, it's heavenly😍 Great video Laila
+christine1962ful Yes, i was doing water only washing, but i won a giveaway for hair products, then i recently brought some more products....and...yeah lol. This was back in 2014 when i did the water only washing, i'm actually gonna go back to that, but i may do apple cider vinegar rinses once a month, and hopefully it'll cleanse my hair and scalp, without stripping my sebum, because i produce too much, i think
I agree with you 100%. I'm a male and I'm trying to grow my hair out again lol. When I use to get my hair cut , I would wash my hair and after would not apply anything to it, except for one time out of the month. I would use an oil. The itching completely stopped.I'm trying to do things right this time around, but still not sure on many things. Beautiful woman and great videos. Keep'em coming.
Aloe Vera juice is great for the scalp! I never use grease. I spritz with a AVJ, vegetable glycerin, nettle extract, horsetail extract, and peppermint EO mix 👍🏾
I have 4c hair.. and this is truth!!!! I discovered it in the 4th year of my natural journey. My scalp is dry like nothing else and putting oil on it created all kinds of problems... then I realized that oiling my scalp was hurting me. But moisturizing it with water helped a lot. I also realized that keeping my scalp cleaned i am fine.
Thank u so much for this video. My daughter is half trini-Indian and she always used to have too much residue on her head from all the hair products I would put in. Her hair is really dry and her scalp too. However sometime late last year I decided I will start washing weekly, put in leave in conditioner, and just grease the scalp the day it is washed until the next washing. IT HAS WORKED. no more itching and no more residue and her hair is getting thicker again. Being that she has like 4 different hair textures, it is tricky in figuring out what is a good hair care regimen. I'm realizing even with myself greasing daily is not necessary either. Just keep the hair moisturized and scalp clean is working for me. So thank you again-- and yes I know this doesn't go for everyone.
I don't think it's putting grease that's the problem. I believe the problem is that putting "ANYTHING" on you scalp causes clogged pores. if you have an itchy scalp like a condition (like she said) that's one thing. But most people, however, need to focus on their hair overall. Hair retention is the REAL issue not, "how do I make my hair grow by applying all these products on my scalp."
Wow, thanks for posting this. When you said "Scalp fire itching" I broke out laughing because those are the exact words I used when the itching started! LOL. I THOUGHT I was the only one who experienced this. A few months back I realized my scalp itched like a wild forest fire after I oiled my scalp. Now, I just stick to the hot oil treatments and wash my hair (focusing on my scalp) to remove the oil from my scalp after 30 minutes. Since I have made this change, my scalp no longer experience that intense "Scalp Fire Itching". Thanks, from the United States!
This video. THIS VIDEO!!! This video came up in my feed at the right freaking time. I have been suffering with thinning edges for a month or so now. I recently had a baby and figured it was postpartum hair loss which I suffered from with my first and thought I knew better this time around so I dug up my Jamaica black castor oil and have been massaging it in almost nightly and mostly concentrating on my edges. And only when you mentioned your scalp burning years ago did it dawn on me that my scalp has been hurting for a while now and my edges are disappearing at an extremely faster than usual rate! It's the castor oil and I actually think I'm allergic to it. Thank you! It took this video for the light bulb to go off. And I actually remember having a really bad reaction like 7 years ago when I tried the castor oil and cayenne pepper mix! Anyway off to wash my hair. #newsubscriber
I am happy to see this video and I can relate to what you are talking about. When going natural became trendy , internet was flooded with advice and all types of oil that supposedly could help growth and make you hair healthy . So in the pursuit of that one day i mixed jamaican castor oil , the black one with coconut oil and applied it to my hair and scalp. Not knowing i was supposed to rinse it 20 minutes later I went to bed with it as a mask . The following day my scalp was itchy and very painful but i didnt realise right away that i just screwed up my scalp . Since then my scalp has become very sensitive , i can barely stand cornrolls and other protective styles. the only thing i can put on my hair for a quick mask is shea butter .My scalp barely stands any other products . So thank you for this video , you are bringing a new perspective to being natural and it is well explained. I hope this will help other girls who are new to this to not over do in the hair care process and be careful with the product you choose.
I stopped oiling my scalp after watching one of your videos regarding this and it was indeed the oils making my scalp itchy. Yes, greasing the scalp may work, but let's be honest, we do it because it's what our parents did. Has anyone ever researched the history behind greasing the scalp? It's very interesting.
The only oil I put on my scalp are castor oil and other hair growth oils, sparingly, to do scalp massages. This has 100% helped my hair growth increase. but I def dont GREASE my scalp, with tends to be petroleum based ingredients which clogs the pores and makes it dry and flaky from build up. My scalp does itch faster tho due to increase circulation and hair growth and didn't understand this until I read the faster hair growth from scalp massages can cause itching (Jeraki Naturals Chili Seed oil for example notes this on their bottle). But is an indicator of growth so helped me to stop over washing my hair with shampoo. other good scalp products are Hydratherma Naturals Follicle Invigorator spray (been ussing that for 9 years now) and Greaux Drops by VIPLuxuryHair, which are both very light and don't clog like castor oil often can. I still use castor oil on my edges to help with thinning.
Yep, most greased are petroleum based. My Honey Child has a natural hair grease called "Sophia's Old Fashioned Hair Grease." I usually order it for Winter and it has a natural base of sunflower butter, Rosemary, honey and olive oil. Camille Rose also has an Ajani growth balm and a scalp oil. So many natural options out there.
abawitx I think she explained what she meant by greasing the scalp which is applying oil or oils to the scalp. She didn't mean applying grease to the scalp 😉
Very interesting topic. I always had issues with dry, itchy scalp, so my mom would encourage me to grease it. However, I noticed that when I would grease my scalp, it would start itching like CRAZY within a day or 2. It didn't matter what grease I used. Lately, I haven't been applying anything to my scalp, and it's not itching or dry. I can literally feel my own sebum. So far, so good.
Thank you so much. My hair used to be thick thick when I was younger because my mum washed my hair evey 1-2 weeks. However since I grew up my hair have been medium thick and I wash my hair 1 time per month but now I know why I dont have steady growth and why my hair is not as thick as it used to wow thank you again very essential video🙆🏾♀️.
Sounds like you were possibly having an allergic reaction to whatever you were applying to your scalp. I haven't really greased my scalp during my hair journey and my hair is now to my mid-back. I feel like if you wear styles where you scalp is more exposed (ex: twists, braids) then you might benefit from greasing your scalp every once in a while.
SAME, Laila! My scalp is so much happier when I don't apply any oils or cream or anything to leave on. I also sometimes tell ppl not to oil their scalps lol the things we wish we knew when growing up! 💯 great video to make!
I haven't added any product in my scalp for a week after my wash day and I feel like it's not itchy or having dandruff anymore ❤️thank you for the advice
I stopped "greasing" my scalp almost 10 years ago for the same reason. My scalp would be on fire, too. Then I stopped using petroleum-base products and just use my own blend of shea butter, coconut oils and other natural oils, but only use it on my hair strands. And, I wash my hair 2-3 times a week in summer and 1-2 times during winter. My once very thin and short hair is now thick and long.
This is very profound. I'll try going without and see what happens. Makes sense that your scalp being consistently covered can cause a reaction that may be remedied if you just stop and allow it to adjust.
This video definitely gave me a lot of insight, especially since I've been considering cutting my hair low again as oppose to letting it grow out to start the process over. I've been dealing with breakage in the middle of my head for the past couple of months and I wanted to start my process over to fix that problem. However this is the 2nd time now that this has been a problem for me, I'm going to try what you've suggested and see the way my hair responds to it. I also stop washing my hair as often as I did before and I'm going to try washing it more often. It's just that it's recommended not to wash it often due to it drying. It's honestly confusing at times.
Grease aka petroleum aka mineral oil, yes. Using a light oil I would think is okay for most people. If you over produce sebum I would suggest not using any oils or grease but Argan oil absorbs and is very light. Most people who have an irritated scalp are likely to be putting conditioner on their scalp and that is a big no-no. Conditioners should never be applied to the scalp. It will cause irritation and clog your pores. Unless you are allergic to certain oils (which could be the case) because oils derive from plants and nuts that can cause irritation. Like you said everyone is different. If you do want to use oils, use one at a time to see if you are allergic or sensitive to it so you can isolate the problem.
I haven't greased my scalp for years and it is perfectly fine and my hair is growing more than ever now. I used to suffer from dandruff and dry itchy scalp but now my scalp is perfectly fine.
That 6 month period you’re describing is exactly what happens to my scalp!!!! Wash my hair condition and oil then itchy & dry flakes. Doesn’t appear to be dandruff just small dry patches and flakes after I oil my scalp. So I understand & agree for my scalp does exactly this!!!!! I never understood why after all I put on my scalp....Thanks for this video
I remember mom always gressing my scalp as a kid, I have since switched to oil now doing my hair myself but I do find my scalp to get really itchy at times. I never thought of the culpret as adding oil to my scalp which I do on a regular basis. For some reason, I just never thought of the sebum that the scalp naturally produces as its own moisturizer. Im doing try not oiling my scalp this wash day and see what happens. Thank you for this.
this makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing. I never used grease or oils either. mainly because of laziness. but it has worked for me and my three girls. now I know why. Love love your hair btw.
The only oil my scalp can handle is JBCO, and it had to have tea tree in it as well. Anything else and my scalp is on fire and ridiculously itchy. If I wash my hair and don't oil my scalp, it gets irritated dry and itchy. If I wash it and oil it with the JBCO & Tea Tree, then I only need to oil it the one time and it's not irritated until my next wash. Which can sometimes end up being more than a couple of weeks
I stopped greasing my scalp a few years ago too. It made my head very itchy as well. My hair has grown thicker and it's very healthy. But I do agree...to each his own... or her own, lol!
This happens to my daughter and I noticed it about 2 months ago. That greasing her scalp causes her scalp to itches really bad. I stop greasing it and she been so happy however it's still a little dry. So now I know to put moisture on the bottom area. Thanks so much for this!!!!! Very informative🙌🏾
I put olive oil on my scalp after my ACV wash and it feels so good! I then get under the dryer (low-heat) and let that goodness soak in. I do not rinse it out. Hair care is like finger prints, everyone is different. 3 years natural! ACV and olive oil are the only 2 things I put on my scalp and water of course. 😚
I stopped applying natural oils to my scalp about 3/4 years ago and my scalp no longer flakes, itches or burns. Perhaps the oils were stopping my scalp from releasing it's own sebum/ oils properly and so leaving my scalp alone allows it to be in it's natural state 😏
Thank you for this! Think I'll go a while without putting products on my scalp and see if if makes my hair happier. This video makes so much sense! New subscriber!
I honestly can't remember the last time I greased my hair. It's been years. Now I just make sure my hair strands are moisturized and do a hot oil growth treatment (on my scalp) every other week. My hair and scalp have never been better. Just watched your video and didn't even realize all of what you said was the reason lol. I was just trying something different and liked the results. Great video.
Thanks for a great informative video. My scalp does get on fire after I apply oils to it and I'm going to just use my oils as a hot oil treatment and leave my scalp alone when I wash my hair again and see what happens!
Okay so I stopped oiling my scalp and it worked! I nourished my scalp when I prepoo. The sore spot on my scalp stopped itching. I'm in such relieffffffff
so true!! I havent greased my scalp in over 10 years and my hair grows a lot faster. What I do for dry scalp is ACV rinses and adding tea tree oil to my shampoo. It's OK to massage oils in your scalp but directly on, NO
I have a mild dandruff problem and I also have scalp eczema so I absolutely have to oil/grease my scalp with something. I guess my scalp does not produce enough sebum to just leave it be. The oil im using right now is the Cocoa Nibs And Honey Ayurvedic growth oil from Camille Rose Naturals. It sinks right into my scalp and I absolutely love it. I also use my own scalp oil mixes with essential oils. If I don't lubricate my scalp, it gets extremely dry, it'll start to flake and get really tight. The only grease like products I can use to "grease" my scalp with are the JBCO pomades from Sunny Isle or either Tropic Isle Living. They have natural ingredients in them, work really well with lubricating the scalp and maintaining the health of it, and they aid in growth. Those legit old school hair greases(blue magic, ultra sheen etc.) are big NO NO for me. They send my scalp straight to hell. Makes it itch so badly and also flares my scalp eczema.
For me, deep conditioners make my scalp itch like crazy! So i had to oil it with a soothing cooling peppermint - like product - in grease form *running away*
Gugu Mtshali Try not to apply conditioner to your scalp it prevents it from breathing, as it is designed to coat and penetrate your hair not your scalp.
Conditioners bother me too. if I leave a DC on too long I feel a weird sensation on my scalp that tells me its going to hurt or cause some later pain soon. I always have to make sure I wash conditioners of my scalp. Even though i don't apply to my scalp it ends up there. I like peppermint sensation but not tea tree. Tea tree burns my eyes.
Trini Girl Natural If you put dc on hair put plastic on your head for 20ms or more it can't help but to slip down to the scalp ,so how do you avoid that from happening?
OMG!! I stopped putting oil and grease on my scalp because I noticed itching and soreness😣 I washed my hair and took a break from oiling my scalp. Girl my scalp was relieved. I also noticed it started producing it's own oil😊
Omg that's the same with my daughters and me!!!! We get red bumps no matter what oil I use so I stopped greasing our scalp and no more painful bumps. I thought it was just my family because I could not find anything during my research.
You look beautiful, Leila! I generally agree with your advice about not greasing your scalp. I'd stop just out of pure laziness years ago lol. Have no problems. Now, I usually only apply oils to my scalp during my deep conditioning and then I wash that out. That makes my scalp feel a lot better than to deep condition without applying oil to my scalp, but again this is not a general rule that I follow (I'm lazy.) When my scalp gets really itchy, I just know it's time to wash my hair. Another time I apply oils is when I just get my hair braided, but that's just to loosen it up because it's usually painfully tight!! ONE EXCEPTION: I received Alikay naturals scalp oil in a Curlkit, so I naturally tried it and it made my scalp feel AH MAZ ING! I would repurchase it if it wasn't so expensive! lol
i experienced the same thing. for my whole life I was always told off for itching my scalp but when I started uni 2 years ago i stopped "greasing" my scalp and my scalp is barely ever itchy🙌
Omg this was so helpful!! I have a serious dandruff problem and my roots are suddenly thicker than the rest of my hair. Thanks for the tips, I will certainly pay attention to them in my routine.
I experienced this even last week. In January I was wearing a wig. Beginning of March I got bored and took of my wig. I washed my hair and I was like let me put scalp oil because i haven't really moisturised my hair good enough for awhile. That whole week it felt like my hair was on fire. Yesterday I washed my hair and didn't put anything on my scalp and my scalp now feels amazing.
Girl, you are about to make a lot of hair product lines that sell "growth oil" go out of business lol!!! so many natural hair product lines sell oil saying that this will make your hair grow. ooooohhhhhh
Hey fusionofcultures love the makeup and the hair and the Good advice! For those viewers who missed the disclaimer if you like, it's all explained at 5:30 minutes for at least two minutes. Pay attention to the first minute. Just saying!
Hello kd... just wondering how much growth you've seen since using Wild Growth. Trying to decide between that and Greaux oil. I have never seen real growth, but my hair was actually growing while I was using relaxers. I was only having it done professionally, and I finally ran out of money. This transition is a nightmare.
This video came at a really good time actually. I was just saying this. I jst washed my hair Thursday and hadn't applied anything to my scalp, even tho it wasn't itching. Saturday, I decided to oil my scalp and my scalp had been soooo tender and on fire! Wat you are saying makes a lot of sense. Also, I'm in school for hair so I am learning essential things. I will definitely be trying this out.
this is true. I remember when I first found out that you don't actually haaaaave to grease your scalp... man, everything started making sense lol now I just oil my scalp with a light oil and it's soo much less itchy. I still have flakes like crazy but that may or may not be my eczema. I do use grease occasionally but oonly on the very ends of my hair because I feel like it works better as a sealant especially when its super cold outside
When I had really bad dry scalp, I tried using oils to tame it but it didn't work. Tbh I think trying to oil my scalp to combat dry scalp and hopes for hair growth ... actually halted my hair growth. & my mom was having the exact same problem, but even worse because she colors her hair. One wash day I decided to abandon my hair regime and just use head and shoulders, and a really mild conditioner ... best decision ever! My hair felt so good, and my scalp wasn't on fire! I kept doing that for about a month, and my hair felt incredible ... I'll probably only oil my scalp before/after I use heat products, like blowdrying my hair, but a very light oil ... and only in particular places. But in terms of combating dry scalp ... big no no . If you've got dry scalp, just use head and shoulders for month, don't even bother with the whole greasing thing ... your just clogging up your pores
I do not grease my scalp. It is already fairly oily and adding it creates lots of build up. I use a scalp spray that nourishes and balances my scalp. I also will keep it clean by massaging it with wet fingertips in the shower. That helps me a lot. I do add oil to my hair, for my ends.
I usually tend to be heavy handed in my mositurization of my hair, but I'll consider holding back some because it could be preventing the full potential of growth. Thanks for the videos they are informational
I've not been oiling my scalp for probably about 10 years. So from when my hair was relaxed. Once the taking care of my hair was left to me, I figured out quite quickly that grease caused itchiness & made my hair filthy super quickly. Especially when I became natural & maybe a hairdresser would apply grease for a style. Would need a wash with about 2 days.
Wow wow wow...I never heard it this way before. I'm so use to greasing my hair. I will try not greasing it for a month and see what happens. I don't have hair like you but my little girl does. Thank you so much for telling us what work for you.
Wow i've never though of that! I always apply oil on my scalp because this what i was taught to do as i kid when my mom use to do my hair! Now that i think of it, my scalp is always itchy during the week even if it i still clean. I will give it a try during the month to see it that changes anything! Thanks you for this video!!
THANKS FOR THE ADVICE I WILL GIVE IT A TRY, I KNOW MY HAIR SHOULD BE A LOT LONGER THAN WHAT IT IS, SO YES I WILL STEP AWAY FROM THEW OILS FOR AWHILE. THANK YOU AGAIN BTW YOUR HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL ANS YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AS WELL.
I stopped greasing my scalp because I got dandruff and it was very itchy. Also, my hair started to fall out. Leaving large bald patches for years! I was putting way to much though! But now my hair is thicker and longer then it has ever been!!
I love the advice you are giving. I have a scalp condition and I did some research on it and from what I saw a lot of people said don't put anything on my scalp because it causes buildup, clog my pores and cause irritation. So what I did was on wash day I would cleanse my scalp with ACV mix and don't put anything on my scalp but two or three days later my scalp would itch like crazy. I mentioned this to my dermatologist and she told me she don't anything about hair so she can't tell me what to do but just continue washing my hair with the shampoo she give me and everything should be fine. Safe to say she was no help cause my scalp still itches a year later and I can't grease it because it causes buildup and I can't leave it because it gets dry :(. I just want a healthy scalp so my hair can be healthy and grow. Also I have Seborrheic Dermatitis, so if anyone can help me, I am open to suggestions. Thank you
Good advice. I decided to give not greasing my scalp a go since 2013. my scalp adjusted and I got too lazy to want to do it anymore. however sometimes in the winter I would try to apply some oil or something to help it from getting too dry. the Canadian winter is harsh. my entire skin cries on bad days. hot oil treatments do help too.
I cannot go without oiling my scalp, because I would get so many flakes and itching. I use parnavu hair oil once a week.I clarify my hair with African black soap once a week, my hair is striving and growing very long.
Thanks Laila! The video wasn't too long at all, made a lot of sense and was very helpful! I'm going to try your tip and not apply product to my scalp during my next wash day. Thanks for another lovely video :)
🤔One thing I was always curious about. What would be the point of adding a hair growth oil to scalp for 20 to 30 mins or maybe even an hour, just to wash it right out. What benefit can you truly get from a stimulating oil working on your scalp for only a few mins?? Isnt that a waste of product?? I mean I understand how prepooing hair with oil helps with the vibrancy and shine of the hair but what about pretreating your "scalp" with oil just to wash it all out? This is a real question and hope Im not offending. Thanks ladies ❤
My scalp is itchy at all times whether I grease it or I don't grease it. I would just like to get rid of my greasy scalp. I try to just let whatever I put on my hair go onto my scalp & I try to put water on it. I have to grease it because it gets very dry and flaky. Now every time I do a wash I make sure I use shampoo & I section it and make sure I rub every section very well.
some people may be dealing with a "yeast infection" on their scalp see a doctor to confirm what you are actually going through. trichologist are probably easier to get an appointment with if they are in your area.... i've stopped greasing my scalp because the grease almost acts like a gel and it dries my hair out completely within 24 hours.
FusionofCultures Great video and I have been educating women in my circle about this same topic! 👍🏽👍🏽
I skip oiling my scalp in the summer and I start oiling it again in the winter. My scalp feels more balanced that way. Rosewater is also a favorite of mine all year round.
Here here! Laila!
Alison Zunguze so true, I’ve noticed that with my hair too. It can be so moody and unpredictable at times
well on my hair I use oils on hair I learned that from the women of Chad I don't put oil on my scalp but once every four or five days when I wash my hair might give myself a hot oil treatment or I may put some oil in my conditioner and give myself a hot oil treat a hot oil conditioning treatment whether it's protein condition or whatever I feel like that day but that's the only thing that I could say is don't clog up your pause on your head that's what might be affecting you and then you have to pay attention to the products that you use and I'm so glad that you found your problem because you would still be going on that was me it was my brown rice water and so that's why I know how you feel when you talk about scalp itching and I was using the white rice all the time washing it and everything and then I said oh brown rice might be better but it wasn't it had me running up and down in my house house or apartment scratching my scalp I couldn't hardly sleep because the itching of my scalp I didn't have dandruff or anything it's just that my scalp was allergic to it and even with me washing it and putting the Nim oil on it it's still it's me for maybe about a month before it really stopped but I learned my lesson and a lesson well-learned
Yes, so true ✨
Same here. I can't cowash either
every hair type is different greasing my scalp is a must for hair growth. I have never had itching or flaking from doing this.
divieyun garrett i agree, I don't the same. I
divieyun garrett I can't comb my hair without grease
Hi! My hair and scalp drinks oil and moisturizers like a lush loves booze. No scalp conditions. No fast hair growth either.
One thing to keep in mind is that plant oils are "technically" gels so they don't clog the scalp. Mineral-based products, on the other hand just lay there and ultimately keep moisture from penetrating the hair follicle.
its not sweetie. my hair is much different now. but its my hair so whatever i choose to put in it i will. thanks! have a nice day
This video made tons of sense.
I did it because I damaged my hair from wearing box braid extension for 2 months in 2015 and when it was finally time to take out the braids, my hair was thin)
- She said she has less tangles because everyday she removes shed hair because the longer you leave shed hair in your hair, the more tangled your hair becomes
- she has a cleaner scalp because the water everyday is rinsing away something - sweat, dead skin cells, etc.
I have seen my hair grow the quickest with this regimen and I do believe it was because my scalp became a lot healthier.
sherlyn When during the day do you rinse your hair? Afternoon, evening?
I noticed the same for myself. Rinsing my hair and scrubbing my scalp (with just water) every day was great. For 3-4 months (during lockdown), I had absolutely no itching. It was eye-opening!
I do not understand the controversy under this post. everything said was clear and factual and she kept reiterating that it works for her! In fact, I think I've learned so much from this. thank you!
I'm still on the 28 (0_0) ... You look so young!!
Nobayeni Nene right?! she doesn't look a day past 18 ❤
Me too!! lol! So cute and young looking :)
I was using a rice water rinse I was using rice white rice for all the time that I was doing it it's wonderful it it it didn't give me any or very little shedding but one day I had got a bright idea I had a little brown rice left and I saw that washed it offers and then I soaked it for approximately a day and a half and I put it in my hair and my scalp I thought after I finish washing my hair and everything and my head dry I wanted to run up and down my house screaming my scalp was itching me so bad I was allergic to the brown rice I could eat it but I just couldn't rinse my hair with it so I wind up using oil which they say it has a anti-inflammatory property and I use it as a hot oil treatment and then after that I would put some on my scalp every 3 or 4 days and it took it away within I think it was about a week and a half I had no more itching so I'm saying to some ladies that are talking about dandruff and itchy scalp it might be a product that you're using that your scalp is allergic to so check that out you know take one away one away until you find out what is going on
Nobayeni Nene i was stuck on 28 like what? i know black don’t crack but damn u look 18 😂
Angel Harmony you should try including pure Tea Tree essential oil in ur shampoo and see if your scalp moisture improve.
Angel Harmony My scalp used to be like this even after washing the next day it would be flaky ass hell. I started washing my hair (with clarifying shampoo) every week and discovered that I don't have dry flakes anymore. My hair is low porosity btw.
Same problem as Angel, at some point i had to accept that maybe my sebum production isn't the same as everyone else's sebum production.
I know people avoid sulfate shampoos cause theyre drying to the hair but I actually discovered that they were what was causing my flakes and dry scalp so that may be something to consider. I have found that herbal or tea tree sulfate free shampoos used with a shampoo brush work the BEST for me!
Cherry thanks, I'll give it a try😊
Usually I wouldn't be able to manage cos of itchiness but the only time oil touches my scalp now is during my prepoo hot oil treatment.
peaceandcrosses same 🙌
peaceandcrosses same with me.
I use olive oil too and it ITCHES!!! But I didn't know this so I've usually been washing it and reapplying more olive oil!!!
byoung4eva1 what are you doing to get your sebum to the ends of your haur? water only washing?
+christine1962ful Yes, i was doing water only washing, but i won a giveaway for hair products, then i recently brought some more products....and...yeah lol. This was back in 2014 when i did the water only washing, i'm actually gonna go back to that, but i may do apple cider vinegar rinses once a month, and hopefully it'll cleanse my hair and scalp, without stripping my sebum, because i produce too much, i think
byoung4eva1 I wish I read that about 15 minutes ago before I just oiled my scalp with olive oil 😐
+Rose Lavi Oleic acid
I agree with you 100%. I'm a male and I'm trying to grow my hair out again lol. When I use to get my hair cut , I would wash my hair and after would not apply anything to it, except for one time out of the month. I would use an oil. The itching completely stopped.I'm trying to do things right this time around, but still not sure on many things. Beautiful woman and great videos. Keep'em coming.
Aloe Vera juice is great for the scalp! I never use grease. I spritz with a AVJ, vegetable glycerin, nettle extract, horsetail extract, and peppermint EO mix 👍🏾
UoLAlumna05 I will try this
Recipe please amt of extracts and E0.
Omw to the store lol
Thanks for the advice I will try that. I did watch videos of aloe vera recently.
🗣PREACH SIS
I've read about and tried samples of DHT blockers, but not long enough to see results. Does anyone understand the concept?
abawitx how often are you supposed to oil the scalp?
This make up 😍 those earrings !😍 that hair !😍 #blackgirlmagic
Very interesting topic. I always had issues with dry, itchy scalp, so my mom would encourage me to grease it. However, I noticed that when I would grease my scalp, it would start itching like CRAZY within a day or 2. It didn't matter what grease I used. Lately, I haven't been applying anything to my scalp, and it's not itching or dry. I can literally feel my own sebum. So far, so good.
The scalp is so important! I'm always looking for ways to care for my scalp since it tends to be dry and itchy. Also, I love your plants! 🌿❤️
I'mma pause 16 seconds in and ask where you got those gorgeous earrings from?!
Dang! She never answered...I am watching this video in 2021 and I still want to know, lol!
Wonderful, informative video! Could you do a follow up on how to protect your scalp while keeping protective styles like braids or weave?
What lipstick are you wearing?
As you said, YMMV :Your mileage my vary". Everyone has to discover what works for them. Glad you found your right routine.
I used to suffer from dandruff and dry itchy scalp but now my scalp is perfectly fine.
literally making me want to go wash my hair right now... very informative, thank you!
Great video. I stopped greasing my scalp 10 years ago because it just didn't feel right. Good to know there's a reason for it.
this makes so much sense.
Perhaps the oils were stopping my scalp from releasing it's own sebum/ oils properly and so leaving my scalp alone allows it to be in it's natural state 😏
28 wow, u look @ 17. Go Girl!!! Love your hair
Can you do a video on cleaning your scalp thoroughly?
Khadijah Kenkwofie I believe she has some old ones where she does that. She has a whole routine.
Tea tree burns my eyes.
deep conditioners don't need to go on your scalp either, try to keep products away
Trini Girl Natural If you put dc on hair put plastic on your head for 20ms or more it can't help but to slip down to the scalp ,so how do you avoid that from happening?
Hi, Some may slip down but starting maybe an inch from your scalp helps. Also rinse thoroughly after 30 minutes redwine641
Amen. Perfect timing. My scalp is going through a horrid time since last year.
Omg this was so helpful!! I have a serious dandruff problem and my roots are suddenly thicker than the rest of my hair. Thanks for the tips, I will certainly pay attention to them in my routine.
Tea tree oil on the scalp is really good. It deeply cleanses your follicles. But it's hard when you're in braids x
I love your hair!!! Thank you for the information I enjoy the knowledge that you share. Stay wonderful.
I apply Wild Growth oil on my hair and scalp the night before wash day every week as my pree-poo only.
That oil is so great for pre-pooing and softening for the roots.
Minimal Assembly I use the light formula in the yellow bottle, working for me for cold winter months, but may skip in the Spring/Summer months.
Hello kd... just wondering how much growth you've seen since using Wild Growth.
Hello gorgeous. Hair, skin, earrings, outfit. Everything ooo is 🔥. Keep on glowing
Great video!!! Thanks Layla!!! I don't use anything on my scalp either!! It just demands that I keep it clean and it's happy!!!
this is true.
Thanks for watching and happy experimenting! 🤗
I still use oil for my scalp massages because I am older and I have read that certain oils are DHT blockers.
THIS WAS A GREAT VIEDO! I ONLY USE OIL ONCE WEEKLY BUT I WILL TRY YOUR FORMULA AND SEE WHAT MY HAIR DOES. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS INFORMATION
Thank you
Maybe it’s your diet. Try cutting out dairy it may be causing inflammation
Please tell us where you got those beautiful earrings from
I cannot go without oiling my scalp, because I would get so many flakes and itching.
Thanks ladies ❤
this is an eye opener, i had no idea!!! I'll definitely try not applying anything to the scalp.
Loving your hair, you're gorgeous!
Earrings are gorge! Where did you get them?
I'm used to "greasing" my scalp, but I think I'm going to give this a try. My hair has been so thin and it keeps falling out and I don't know why.
ssssssssssssssssssssiisss that sweater with the choker. please hook a sister up. where did you get it??? it's beautiful.
Hi FusionofCulture I tried the no greasing my thick 4a4b scalp with my diy oil mix for a week and my love love it. Thank you for this information.
I agree. I just decided not to grease(petroleum based products) my scalp randomly and my dandruff went away and I haven't since.
please tell me what kind of lipstick you're wearing!!
some people may be dealing with a "yeast infection" on their scalp see a doctor to confirm what you are actually going through. trichologist are probably easier to get an appointment with if they are in your area.... i've stopped greasing my scalp because the grease almost acts like a gel and it dries my hair out completely within 24 hours.
