i think what's interesting about Gemini Home Entertainment is earlier videos tend to inform and warn the viewer while its newer videos seem to be for the benefit of the woodcrawlers, misinforming viewers and informing the woodcrawlers how to do things, as if GHE has been taken over and its overall nature changed subtly

Gemini Home is an incredible series created by ONE person alone and is so shockingly artistic and horrific - im so glad i delved into the series much earlier than the major crowd as the community is so friendly and remy himself is a communicative, talented and kind guy. Support this blessed series and soul as well as you can - because a series like this only comes by once in a lifetime and should be protected at all costs

one off thought ive had on this: in the first video, i think its thematically important how with the last normal creature discussed it is mentioned that it is going extinct due to human interference. and then right after that what we come to know as 'natures mockery' is introduced, which targets humans. kind of like nature is taking revenge on humanity

I know this comment is two months old but I want to point out the fact that the greater prairie chicken is also an endangered animal, for example we have some down in Texas but many of them were killed by hurricane Harvey. And note how woodcrawlers habitat is stated to be ‘everywhere’. I agree with the idea that this is nature’s revenge on humans, but I think it’s also a commentary on invasive species and how their negative effects on native wildlife are completely ignored due to humans favoring them. Such as where it states in the burrowing owl section that feral cats and dogs prey on them, both invasive species that humans take little action to curb their dangerous affects on native wildlife, and normalize them, just like woodcrawlers which the video presents as an inevitable takeover.

Of there's one that Gemini Home reminds me of, it's the free videos you could rent out from Blockbuster back in the day. Many of those free videos would be educational as in PSA in VHS form, but the tapes would contain about 30m to an hour of content and thus had to be padded out with multiple segments that may or may not be related. The distorted quality of the image hits home especially since it reflects that VHS degradation perfectly of stored video that hasn't seen light of day in ages.
As mentioned, these videos seem to be more useful for a school setting if not for their subjects being all over the place. I would imagine these videos would be released much like those 'free' videos were, packaged together for people to find without warning.

    • @rotisseriepossum

Tldr: I think the VHS format is much more believable/fitting for analog horror compared to a live news broadcast. Like there’s an actual person/entity behind this, creating its own visuals, instead of a vague spooky energy that still operates by news station’s rules. (Spooky text over program titles, banner text at the bottom of the screen, etc.) There’s a stronger sense of purpose and I think the typical glitches work better for an old VHS tape that might’ve been recorded over or gathering dust etc. It really separates GHE from other analog horror and avoids veering into L58 copycat vibes.
This is honestly my FAVORITE thing about the series. I think it’s an ingenious way to compensate for the... unbelievability that comes with the ‘hijacked news station’ subgenre of analog horror. It’s much easier for me to believe that these are VHS tapes were created with purpose and intent-even/especially? in the segments that feel like someone recorded over the original tape. I mean, compared to a live broadcast taken over by some vague entity/energy that still operates according to the station’s setup (like putting spooky messages where the titles of upcoming shows should be)-especially when the station starts to fight with/contradict itself.
And this is just me nitpicking but oftentimes the writing during the normal broadcast parts feel... not bad/clumsy, but it doesn’t read like a semi-formal/neutral news-style message. Something about it just doesn’t say ‘this was written by a producer/anchorperson trying to maintain normalcy/objectivity,’ even before it gets creepy. But I do try to keep in mind that none of these are meant to be some high-production big-budget short films or smth. The fact that they’re typically made by one person actually makes it more interesting/appealing.
It’s hard to describe without sounding judgmental/pretentious (and I think part of this stems from a teeny bit jealousy tbh). And this is entirely me nitpicking since I tend to notice/hyperfixate on these things (though I’m not the sort of person that points out tiny grammatical errors and pretends I’m superior/smarter).
But anyways, GHE has a different vibe and some more... leeway? for that sort of stuff. Especially since it somewhat feels like an educational tape I would’ve seen in grade school.

I think the videos are interesting in that there is a fair amount of the content which could go under "protection/awareness/preparedness" while the rest of the content is focused around what I can only describe as "perpetuation".
Like, the Weirdest Animals video could be seen as an instruction of safety measures against the fake people. However, a video like "Home Invasion Protection" is blatant in its intended audience as perpetrators.
Combine this with the technology/ harbinge/ corporate videos and you have a company, Gemeni (think; twins/two faced), who wants to sell you preparedness and fear, but also harm and violence.
David, I hope you know that there's lots of people watching and supporting you regardless of changes. I enjoy your content, but I don't comment. I think I will change this, and leave comments as often as I can, even just to say "great job!"

@sadiq Acolytes of Horror has a great video on Midsommar, looking at some of the more subtle details and suggests that the cult is also a white nationalist group. I’ve never seen ANYONE else point that out but he makes a great argument and managed to convince me.
Thought Slime is a leftist who sometimes reviews media from that perspective on his main channel, but he has a second channel called Scaredy Cats thats primarily focused on horror movie analysis (often discussing how capitalism/politics might influence things, but he’s great if you want something more loose and goofy instead of a formal video essay). I especially like when he reviews more obscure/cheesier movies from the 80s, and his videos on the Phantasm series is rly fun.
Cinema Therapy looks at movies from a psychological perspective.
I can’t say how deep/left Wendigoon is, but he often points out details in web series/movies/etc that I hadn’t considered.
Accented Cinema is one of my favorites for interesting/in-depth movie analysis, some pointing out how Chinese culture is utilized (he himself is Chinese-i *think* he’s originally from there but I don’t remember). He definitely goes beyond the ‘movie explained (but actually it’s a summary)’ format that’s so common.
Xiran Jay Zhao is a Chinese immigrant who looks at cultural influences on movies/shows like ATLA, Kung-Fu Panda, and both versions of Mulan. She made her channel/first video because she was so frustrated with the live-action version, it’s very informative, very funny, and delightfully spiteful.
Pop Culture Detective has an amazing video called ‘The Tragedy of Star Wars Droids’ that analyzes how SW presents the variety of droids fit into society, and just how flimsy/dark it is. And K2SO from Rogue One is especially fucked up and sad.
Sideways analyzes music in movies and has an interesting defense for Suicide Squad, videos on why Cats/live-action Beauty and the Beast/Les Miserables are total letdowns, and why A Goofy Movie is a masterpiece.
Lola Sebastian is left if I remember right and her video ‘The Horror of Marge Simpson’ is great/in-depth, complete with costumes. I first found her through her ‘Lolita’ video (comparing the book to more the salacious movie adaptions) and I was hooked.
Big Joel does really good left movie analysis, as well as other things (like RUclips channels and dr Phil), and has an hour-long (patreon goal) video on Adam Sandler’s ‘Click’ and is surprisingly insightful.
Jacob Geller is also leftist though he focuses on primarily video games. His video on the politics of ‘Call of Duty’ is phenomenal.
Jack Saint is also a leftist and while I think he’s going to switch up his content soon, he has great, half-joking videos about eugenics in ‘Sky High’ and ‘Cars,’ as well as the implied politics of talking dog movies/Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
I follow other ppl too though I don’t remember the names at the moment. This got pretty long but I hope it helps! (Take a shot for every time I said ‘great,’ oof)

I followed originally for stuff like PetsCop because your read on it was fantastic, it's always fascinating to see your analysis of series like this because where the usual analysis is on the plot and characters, sometimes even the themes that come out of these interactions and plot, you step back out of the story and look at the medium as well, bringing attention and consideration to the author's choices in the construction and presentation of the work, not just what happens in it. It's a big reminder that there's more angles to approach a work with when watching/reading/playing it. It's why I like your coverage on the more abstract works out there (which may not *strictly* be horror but gets classified that way for the unsettling effect it has).
I lost track of the point, anyway, I think that this style of analysis is interesting enough to not limit it just to internet horror, there's flexibility for other media pieces out there and it's good to give yourself the leeway to step out of that pigeonhole, lol, but it just especially clicks to me for the 'unusual' media out there which sometimes happens to be horror, yknow?

  • @NoGirlsOnTheInternet
    @NoGirlsOnTheInternet 3 года назад +7

While I can see your parallels drawn in the first 3 videos between humans and endangered animals, I do not think that is the actual focus or plot of the entire work, especially considering the turns it takes towards the later entries. What I feel is the established narrative runs something like this: we begin by drawing the similarities between how humans encroach upon and displace wildlife, but then move on to ways in which we ourselves may be driven to extinction by outside actors. Concerning wildlife, humans are persistence hunters, which would be terrifying to practically anything that cannot sweat, we also have firearms, which allow us to kill completely undetected by wildlife, this would be equally terrifying as the woodcrawlers, especially given our tendencies to hunt in blinds. Then of course there's the matters you brought up regarding our 'stealing their voices' and making their homes 'not their own' I believe that is just to set the tone of role reversal. Humans are secure in their position as the dominant species, but what if that is no longer the case? The videos following up, to me, seem to explore the inherent weaknesses in humanity, the Deep Blue for instance, may in fact reference Geneva, however, this particular misspelling may also be a portmanteau of the root Gyno and Eve, essentially, 'first woman,' referencing the ocean as the cradle of life on earth. This may also tie into the 'Mary' character as she is also referenced in relation to water, in her case, a stream. We are expressly told that the Marianas trench cannot be inhabited by any living creature, then are immediately shown something that -can- live in this habitat, against what we should already have accepted as fact, similarly, the later videos involving REGNAD confirm the character 'Mary' is now 'something else'. The video detailing our solar system more explicitly states that these same creatures hail from beyond Earth, and just as humans have found and hunted other life on this planet, they have found, and are beginning to hunt, us. And they are doing so with our consent and co-operation, after all, Gemini Home Entertainment, and some of the companies that make videos through their services, are shown to be directly profiting off of working with these beings. No other species on earth so willingly co-operated with humans to encourage its' own extinction, yet we seem too glad to be of service to these woodcrawlers. The videos display humans setting up camps to lure more of our own to their clutches, selling sleep monitoring software that will give them further insight into how our brains work, and teaching our children to stray from the protections of their home to be devoured of their own volition. This apparent co-operation seems to be rooted in the promise of further technological advances, as seen in progress report. In other words, through literal human sacrifice, a handful of us march the unknowing masses gladly towards our end, an unknowable, and unfightable superior force from beyond Earth. I believe the actual timeline of events, especially concerning the Mary and Jack characters, goes something like this, "Mary" is first to have been turned into 'something else' by the woodcrawlers, possibly being caught while fleeing from them, perhaps by falling into a stream, as referenced in the AI video. Jack initially escaped, as he 'jumped over the river' and 'ran to the secret place' a place yet unknown to the woodcrawlers. She is then used by the woodcrawlers as a terminal to communicate with Gemini Home Entertainment et al, and make videos that more directly disseminate their messages, using our communication technology against us, whereas Jack's attempts to document and warn humanity of the new encroaching threat are similarly published. As is shown in the last two videos of the series however, Jack's efforts seem to be in vain, as the corporations co-operating with these external forces were able to confirm that Jack is 'with us now.' and in the home invasion video we see what is most likely Jack ultimately meeting his end while trying to collect data on a woodcrawler swarm's nest, formerly, a human home. If anything, I see it less as a 'POV: you're a bunny and man is a scary scary monster' and more of an essay on how something higher on the food chain would weaponize our own greed to get us to willingly walk into an abattoir.

Anybody who admonishes you for expressing Leftist ideas hasn’t been critically listening to or even fully interpreting any of your videos. In any case, the horror genre is inherently political. It’s crafted to target our moral or social boundaries and confront us about things that make us uncomfortable. We’re seeing more and more horror stories that are explicit political allegory. About video #3 (The Deep Blue); the fact that the abyssal monster is luminous makes me think that it's supposed to evoke the light of a deep sea submarine. It ties in really well with the theme of human as intruders/colonizers/menace from the other videos. 'Nothing can live inside the Marianas Trench', except, of course, humans and their weird machines. That'd be why the video of the monster is presented right after images taken from a submarine.

I can't believe I didn't notice this video earlier. 💗 I'm always thrilled to see analysis videos regarding Gemini Home Entertainment - or pretty much any analog horror series, for that matter, but I'm very much in love with GHE, its story, its soundtrack, its atmosphere and its visuals, so I love hearing different perspectives from different viewers. 🤗

No but seriously thank you for covering this. I love this series and it desperately needs more exposure for how great it is and how much work and love has gone into it. I feel the same about Nightmare Masterclass! So what better than to bring the two together.

You bring up some very interesting points in this video. I think there's a lot to be said about how Gemini and similar works prey on a seemingly common human anxiety that the things we've done to others will eventually be done to us. Gemini, in your reading, frames this in terms of human and animal relations, though it and other works do take other angles on it as well. One could similarly read a colonialist interpretation into the work, for example. The woodcrawlers seem to be intelligent, after all, and there's something to be said about how colonialism "takes the voice" of the colonized, to be used for the benefit of the colonizers.

I hope you plan on making more videos on Gemini Home Entertainment. Though the analysis was deep, it was also very cursory given that only 3 videos were prodded and the grander scope of the channel's story is missed. I hope GHE will eventually get the same treatment petscop did, it's up there with local 58 imo

I think the issue with your channel is that the name (Nightmare Masterclass) does imply that you do mostly horror content. I dont think you should change it though. RUclips prefers to also focus on the same types of content at once, by which I mean if I watch a video on a creepy videogame that entire week is only going to give me recommendations for more of that. So you will find subscribers from, say, petscop, and those people will want to see more content like that, (and this), so it will disfavor you when you put something else out. In short, I think you are right but don't worry about it or try to chase subscribers. If you build it, they will come, as they say. It's also worth point out that RUclips has a strong political bias in their algorithms also. You and I have very different politics and that means that I have to go WAY out of the way to seek out views and opinions like yours even though I want to hear differing opinions regularly. The algorithms and recommendations tend to lean far toward a combination of "echo chamber" and "confirmation bias". If I had to suggest anything at all, if you cared to, it would be to try to cultivate an audience in comments, livestreaming, and away from youtube and don't rely at all on RUclips recommending you to anyone or even their ability to alert people when you post something.

You should add that little speech at the end to your front page as a one off video.
But on another note appreciate the other content i think it give this channel a bit of variety but the downside to having a channel of variety is that it doesn't mesh with the algorithm well so good channels don't get a lot of subs so don't be disconcerted it's normal.

I don't mean to be a grammar or more specifically a pronunciation corrector, but the G in harbinge is pronounced exactly how anyone would say Orange. Emphasis on the fact that there is an E after the G. There are few words where G is pronounced like in the word Jumping < see, the G is by itself and has no letter that comes after, also it is the very last letter of a word. Again don't mean to be that guy who does this, first time actually, but just seems like an oversight on pronunciation.

I noticed you said you were hemorrhaging subscribers. I was actually on the verge of unsubscribing myself. Most of the notifications I get for the uploads for this channel don't seem (at least by the title of the videos) like something I'd like to watch. Long form streams aren't really my thing and you started uploading more of them after making an announcement that the direction of the channel would be changing. To my knowledge, the only indication you gave to signal this change was the "very official statement" video. I'm not sure why, but for some reason I remember that video being a stream that was over an hour long. I just went back to check and it's only 25 minutes, but the title of the video and the way it begins + its length didn't seem like it was the kind of video that would break down and quickly and concisely explain what would be changing and seemed instead like a bit of a "ramble" style video where you get to your talking points when you get there instead of following a script.
I know that not all content needs to be for everyone so I'm not trying to say that you should change your content to fit my or anyone else's impressions of what we would like, and you also said it didn't really bother you that much. Personally, I loathe the idea of trying to alter your passion projects to appeal to some faceless and incomprehensible algorithm god that demands certain sacrifices in exchange for a chance at exposure. That youtube introduces a game only they know the full rules to and says "play, or languish in obscurity forever".
I'm not really a content creator so I likely don't have any more youtube experience than you, but something I feel would help viewers like me hang around is if you made an official and much shorter video outlining the kind of content you'll be making and organizing the content into categories or giving them different keywords on the titles. As it stands, I can almost NEVER tell if the video I just got a notification for is going to be a three minute recommendation, a thirty minute analysis, or a two hour stream. This is a problem that only stems from following youtube notifications I get on ym phone though, so if you have a lot of desktop watchers who can already see the length of the video before they try to watch it, then my points aren't are strong.
Many of your videos are also about things many people might not know about before clicking. Words like petscop are just nonsense to people who don't know what petscop is and little in the title gives potential watchers any clues about what it's supposed to be. When you started uploading your "Exploring Diminish" series, I though based on the title that it was an analysis video, presumably about a movie or web series called Diminish and was disappointed to find out it was a stream that looked like you playing a game. I think maybe a lot of your viewers might be experiencing similar things.
Making it clearer to viewers what kind of video they're about to watch is going to be might help. Maybe establishing categories for your content and putting an indication in the title of what category the video fits into could let subscribers like me better filter through your content to find the things we are interested in and steer clear of content that doesn't interest us as much.
Anyway, I'll stick around for now. Even if one out of every handful of your uploads seems on the surface like the kind of thing I want to know more about or hear someone's take on, your perspective is valuable enough for me to stay on board. I hope none of what I wrote seems mean or anything. When you said you were losing subscribers, since I was actually planning on unsubscribing myself, I felt compelled to try to let you know what a casual viewer of yours (and of youtube content in general) thinks about the channel and offer insight into what might make people like me more likely to watch or stick around.

Honestly it's just nice to find a well made series like this that wasn't created by Aidan Chick.
I respect the guy for working hard but he promoted Channel 7 and some other projects on someone's "analog horror" video while putting down Local 58 but there was no disclaimer as to who he was so he appeared to be just another RUclipsr doing a collab.
I get that it might seem like a "wow, that's meta, how cool!" moment but if you didn't know then it's basically advertising and crapping on the competition.
Sorry for the rant but it feels like that kind of stuff taints the whole art form.

I'm a long time subscriber from the early days and have no plans to leave, but I think the vagueness of the titling and the differing formats could alienate viewers. I always check the time of each video to see if it is a stream or not. I watched the Diminish livestreams, but at increased speed and skipping breaks/chat interaction because I just don't have any interest in that. I do not watch "just chatting" streams, by anyone. In general, I find streams disappointing as they are less likely to have any deep consideration of the topic and are less dense with the tagline promises than prepared videos. If there are other people like me, it's likely that the streams/segments are being only partially watched or skipped by enough people to negatively affect your algorithm (watch time is hugely important - not just the amount of time, but the percentage of the total time of the video). You could stream on a separate channel, or unlist the vods afterwards and put them in a separate public playlist to lessen the impact they have on the eistribution of your composed analyses.
I really think it's more of an organization issue than anything to do with the types of content you focus on or the perspective of your critique. You're doing great work!
