  • In this video I demonstrate how to connect an old iMac 5K to an M-1-2-3 Apple Mac, MacStudio, MacMini or even new iMac.
    This is the cheapest way to get an Apple 5K monitor for your new Mac, and you may even already own it!
    This only requires one piece of hardware to connect your M-series Mac to your old iMac, plus the cable, either USB or Ethernet; even WiFi works but may not be as fast.
    Using an old iMac as a screen will perfectly recycle your olds iMac and give it a new lease of life.
    You can even use the hard drive on the iMac for additional storage and the USB ports for connecting external hard drives and other devices for data and charging.

    Thanks Phil. I just purchased this first of the year, and so far so good. I did use it with a 2018 MacBook Pro with an i9 chip, and it had some lag, but wasn't too bad. But I just bought an M1Max MBP with 32 video cores and 64GB of memory last week, and the lag is almost non-existent. I will say that I use a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 2 cable connected to my mid-2015 5K iMac, with the APPLE Thunderbolt to USB-C adapter to connect it to my MacBook Pro. So it is a thunderbolt connection instead of USB-A to USB-C. But this setup has saved me spending over €1600 on a Mac Studio display.

    thank you Phil for al the clear explanation and video's
    I've just bought an 2017 iMac 4k and I have got the screen from my m2 mini already working without the Luna Display.
    however I did ordered the luna because I hope I will get a better image quality with it.

      You'll have to let us know. I suggest that you use a cable connection between the two Mac's for the fastest responsiveness.

    The best part about this is getting to keep our old 27" 5K iMacs alive. I am so tired of "recycling" dead tech after just 4 or 5 years. How much recycling is actually happening after we drop off mountains of old iPads and MacBooks at BestBuy? Unfortunately if it's not economically feasible, it's not happening.

    ❤ the Luna Display. At this time I use a 2019 iMac connected with Ethernet as my main display and a 2013 as my secondary display connected by wifi. However I’m looking to maybe purchase a Mac mini and use iMac 2019 as the primary display to the Mac mini and the 2013 as the secondary display. I also sometimes hook up a third standalone HP screen from my primary display through an HDMI to HDMI cable which I sometimes mirror my main screen when someone is in my office so they can see what I’m doing on my main screen or I use it as an extended screen. I’m hoping i’ll be able to replicate this set up with the Mac mini which is why I’m watching your videos. I will probably wait for the new version of Mac mini to be released in March 2024.

      Luna Display will only support one iMac as a connected display.

    Hi Phil 😊 Thanks for the video!
    When will you be posting the test results with video / video editing software (lag)?

      Hi Peter, here's a heads up! Using Luna Display for Headless mode (single Monitor) is a little cumbersome. The problems come with starting and waking both Mac's and getting them to link automatically. So I fully recommend having an additional monitor connected as well as your iMac.. really that's what Luna Display was made for. Having 2 screens is great for productivity too!
      Regarding video editing: it is perfectly fine using the 5K iMac as 'Editing' really doesn’t necessarily equate to fast moving content, however there is a refresh rate issue which makes video replay a little blocky compared to a directly connected monitor.

      Thank you for you fast and honest response!@@HelpfulPhil I really appreciate it. I'll probably just get the BENQ PD3220U as the main monitor for the macbook pro .. and maybe use the iMac Pro as a second monitor.

    Thanks again, Phil, for this video and helping us out before in the previous videos on how to use existing iMacs as display monitors for M2 MacMinis. I did purchase Luna Display using your code and have been using it in headless display since early December last year and pretty satisfied with the performance. The only issue I face is turning on/off my MacMini when not in use. However, I have a workaround which is working just fine. Btw, what iMac 27" have you got there? Is it a late 2015 model?

      Thanks for your comment. It's good to hear of your experience using it in headless mode. I'll be making a video soon about using an iMac in headless mode. My purchase was a late 2015 model in pristine condition.

    Thanks, @HelpfulPhil, after a long search, I found your video. I have an iMac 2015, 27" that I am hoping to connect with Mac Mini. Have you done a video on that or, is the Luna device compatible with iMac 2015 as well?

    • @HelpfulPhil
      @HelpfulPhil  2 месяца назад

      totally compatible in the same way. My 'original' Luna Display iMac was the 2015 model.

    thanks so much for your video as i have a late 2014 iMAC and i plan to upgrade this with a Mac mini M2 Pro as the new photoshop versions are not supported by my old iMAC. Do we need to buy the Luna USBC dongle for plugging imyo MAC Mini or just a USBC-USBA cable is adequate. Can i Use an Ethernet cable and get the same quality?

    • @HelpfulPhil
      @HelpfulPhil  2 месяца назад

      You need Luna Display and a cable. Either USB-C to USB-A or Ethernet will work well.

    Hi Phil,
    As always very helpful :)
    I’m just curious… is there any way to simply use your iMac 5k screen as the main display without having to have a dell screen etc…
    I’m thinking of getting a Mac Studio M2 and I have a 2020 iMac… so would prefer to just use the latter as a the main monitor rather than have x2 monitors.
    Any help would be much appreciated:)

      I made a video on using Luna Display in Headless mode - in short it's not very user friendly as headless mode is really made for iPad. Have a look here

    This answers my other question on the first video about ethernet vs usb-a to usb-c. I have tons of old ethernet cables, but is one better than the other? Thanks!

    • @HelpfulPhil
      @HelpfulPhil  4 месяца назад

      I'm sure that any of your Ethernet cables will be good enough, but if you have CAT-5 & CAT-6 use the CAT-6

      @@HelpfulPhil Right, I actually meant is the usb-a/c cable better than ethernet? Thanks!
      I realized that if I use ethernet for Luna I'm going to have to put a router between the new Mini and the old iMac because use ethernet to get online. I avoid WiFi if possible. (So it might be best to just get the special usb cable)

    • @HelpfulPhil
      @HelpfulPhil  4 месяца назад

      @@GregOlotka your message is confusing. If you use Ethernet already to get online with your iMac you must be using a router!...so just connect your new MacMini to the same router with an Ethernet cable.

    • @GregOlotka
      @GregOlotka 4 месяца назад

      @@HelpfulPhil Right, just that my router (an ancient AirPort Extreme Base Station) is currently on a different floor and is serving as a hub for the printer and anyone who wants to jack in directly to the home network from upstairs. I have a couple ethernet wall jacks, which is how it all connects. If I go the ethernet route, I'd have to get a second router to use in my office between the iMac and the Mini. It might just be easier to get the usb cable. I possibly have one somewhere and not know it! Thanks!
