  • Island of the Sun with shining cement tiles / Sea world East China Sea Iheya Island Noho Island (Okinawa Prefecture)
    Noho
This island is located to the southwest of Iheya Island and is connected by the 1.2 km long Noho Bridge. Noho is said to be the second village in Iheya, and mainland residents are said to have migrated to Terchama-dake (Afuri Forest). As you walk through the Nobo village, you will see stone walls made of cut stones stacked tightly together with no gaps. The stone used is a gray sandy limestone called Nohoseki that is collected on this island, and because it is soft and easy to work with, it was widely used on Noho Island and Iheya Island. The pattern is geometric and very beautiful.
    Iheya Island butt
Iheya Island, northwest of the main island of Okinawa and the northernmost part of Okinawa Prefecture, is a long and narrow island surrounded by mountains with an altitude of 200 meters. The main industries are sugarcane cultivation, which began in 1898, and rice cultivation, which has a long history. It is said to be the birthplace of King Yakura, the ancestor of Sho Hashi of the first Sho dynasty of the Ryukyu Dynasty, and historical and legendary sites such as Yakura Tomb and Amanoiwato still remain. Shimajiri Village is located on the flat land between Mt. Kayo and Mt. Awa at the southern end of the long and narrow Iheya Island. Of the three villages on Iheya Island, Gakiya has a coral reef stone wall and red tiles, and Tana has a block wall and cement tiles that are impressive, but here in Shimajiri, the mansions are small and the main buildings of each private house can be seen close from the street. The wooden walls leave an impression. The combination of brown board walls + red tiles and blue board walls + gray cement tiles is beautiful.
    Iheya Gakiya
Gakiya village is the largest village on the island, close to Madomari Port, where ferries arrive and depart. It is a village where mansions are regularly divided into a grid pattern on a plain formed between the mountain range and the coast. The impressive scenery of the village is the straight streets, coral reef stone walls, and red tiles. Hinpun were not seen at the entrances and exits of mansions where the stone walls were cut, and instead there were often blindfolds placed with boards lined up. There is a Yagura tomb near the village.
    Iheya Tana
Get off the ferry at Matomari Port and drive straight north along the plains to reach the Tana village at the foot of Mt. Go (231m). At the entrance to the village there is a rotary with trees planted on it. The villages formed on gentle slopes have main buildings and attached buildings arranged in the same way, and are more impressive with their combinations of cement tiles and block walls rather than red tiled roofs and coral reef stone walls.
