  • ExeterRider on RUclips has a special connection with the BMW R850R. They've created a motovlog in Lincolnshire that delves into the world of this BMW motorbike. In their review, they discuss the BMW R850R in depth, covering the engine, sound, valve adjustment, and other aspects of this motorrad. For some, the R850R is a top-notch BMW motorbike, but for others, it might not be their cup of tea. This bike has a unique exhaust note and offers a customizability that makes it attractive to cafe racer and scrambler enthusiasts.
    The BMW R850R's performance is a top consideration for many riders, as they want to experience its impressive top speed. However, the bike isn't without its quirks and challenges. Some have faced issues like battery replacement and fuel pump problems. ExeterRider on RUclips shares their love-hate relationship with the BMW R850R and even considered selling it at one point. In the end, their journey with this motorbike is a mix of passion and frustration, just like any true rider's connection with their bike.The BMW R850R is a roadster-style motorcycle produced by BMW Motorrad. Here are some key features and characteristics of the R850R:
    Engine: The R850R is powered by an 848cc, air-cooled, horizontally opposed (boxer) twin-cylinder engine. It delivers smooth power delivery and a distinctive sound.
    Performance: While the R850R is not designed to be a high-performance sportbike, it offers a decent amount of power and torque for everyday riding. It provides a balance between power and manageable performance.
    Comfort: The motorcycle is known for its comfortable riding position, with an upright seating posture and a relaxed ergonomics. It's suitable for both short rides and longer journeys.
    Handling: The R850R has responsive handling and good stability, making it easy to maneuver in urban environments and on twisty roads. It is designed to provide a confident and enjoyable riding experience.
    Design: BMW motorcycles have their unique design language, and the R850R follows that tradition. It has a classic and timeless appearance with clean lines and a minimalist approach.
    Reliability: BMW motorcycles, including the R850R, are generally known for their reliability and durability. Regular maintenance and proper care can contribute to a long-lasting ownership experience.
    Accessories and Features: BMW offers a range of optional accessories and features for the R850R, allowing riders to customize and enhance their riding experience. Keep it! I sold my '03 R850R many years ago...and regretted it. It's one of a handful of bikes I've parted with over the years and subsequently wished I hadn't. That flyscreen screen on your bike is amazingly clear!!

    I’m glad that you have kept your r850r bmw ER, they are such a good bike. I sold mine last year and now regret it. The 850 boxer engine is the sweet spot in their range. Give your Givi screen a try in the colder months, I found that it works well.

      That's the plan! I want to keep it but it is a bit of a journey. I'm on edge with it all the time and just wait for the next thing...it's still not how I want it to be but perhaps I'm asking too much from a old engine.

    The R850R is a beautiful bike…if the maintenance is done periodically. I have a 1997 850R with 108,000 miles. If you want to save a lot of money and eliminate many headaches, service your motorcycle after purchase…even if the previous owner says it’s up to date. Nice one Exmouth !
    I'm sure that it's a lovely bike when it's running well but as a self-employed person myself ( I sell onions for French onion soup - it's a precarious business and my income fluctuates ) I can understand your concerns with regard to an impending massive bill !
    It's one of the reasons why I love my Royal Enfields so much. I know that if push came to shove, you could probably rebuild the entire engine on one of those for a few hundred quid. With the right kind of hammer I could probably even do the job myself. So yes, I can understand how every ride may be slightly marred by an undertone of "just hope it keeps running like this until I get it back home".
    On the other hand, having done the things you've done to get the bike to this point, I suppose that increases your attachment to the bike. That's how it was for me with my Bullet 500. That one day when I finally had it running well I thought "Time now to get on and enjoy this bike. It's a keeper". And then it started randomly dying on me and refusing to start until it was cold again, at which point my attachment waned and dumping it into a ditch and setting light to it seemed like the preferred option.
    Always tricky knowing when to sell a vehicle on before something expensive happens, you're not alone in that.
    Just enjoy the bike while you can and hopefully the right moment to sell it will someday present itself BEFORE something gets expensive.
    Try not to worry about it Steve. At least you don't have a lot of money tied up in it, so just try to enjoy it.
    Take care Exmouth, nice to see you on the telly as always !

      Exactly all you said there is pretty much how I feel. It's never let me down, but just a case of getting it up and running right is a constant battle it feels but infact I think a lot of it is in my head worrying about the rear drive going and silly things like that which have never happened,
      I considered chucking it in for a meaty , but its not worth a lot, I bought it for not much money and its lovely to ride.
      You hit the nail on the head , I just need to enjoy it rather than looking for the next problem that isn't there ( although it has a slow punture on the back at the moment)
      I need therapy ha! Maybe its the sand off the beech

    Lovely chronicle of the perils of owning a mature bike. Although I admire the technical ability of the later models I found the 1250 shift cam very unsatisfying. Had a yamaha bt1100 bulldog 1100cc twin, shaft drive, 11000 miles. Bought it immaculate running rough, tick over, surging at low speeds. Thought carb refresh no problem. Ha ha after 2 yrs I gave up. I had to remove the carbs every 3 months even with additives. On a v twin they are in between the cylinders attached by snorkels. A 2005 bike, the constant wriggling easing the carbs off cracked the snorkels. £350 each new and none anywhere in the world and out of production!!! E bay breakers where I went but dreaded as they too not anywhere near new. When the carbs were off, I have confidence in stripping them but not every 3 months. The slow running jet absolutely clogged with jelly type substance and jelly on float bowls causing floats to stick a piddle fuel out. There is so much coming out on cars, bikes, mowers failing and in particular small machines engines knackered all blamed on the fuel. So I sold it which grieved me as was a lovely bike. I but aviation fuel ( cant say where and stick some in my mower bikes and car. Just a gallon every month.. my mower starts if I look at it. My v strom says to use E10 but I fret about the injectors and fuel rail. A local bike mechanic has told me they are getting fuel injection problems on newer bikes previously unseen. I had an R1100R a very long time ago and I loved it. I did have a brake line burst though which was scary. Give me an oil head over the newer BMWs. My Yamaha was very similar to ride and the shaft drive lovely. I would be worried about those screen bars if I came off. When I put the aviation fuel in my berlingo it seems fast to accelerate😂😂😂

    I got sucked into all the "more modern is Better" hype of the sales blurb. To this day i rekon it was the best handling bike i ever owned, and i did have a 2000 Hayabusa, before i bought my first BMW.
    I wish i still had my air cooled Bmw R1200 GS, spent a great time riding across europe, it was an absolute joy on the Austrian , italian, and swiss Alps.

    I'm glad that you got over that selling the 850 fad! It's a great bike (i think so anyway, yes, i know I would say that!) What a bargain you got there, a helluva lot of bike for the money! Regarding your haphazard tickover, have you tried the simple trick of taking off your MAF sensors and cleaning with carb cleaner aerosol? i think you can get a dedicated MAF aerosol these days) I had a Lexus car a few years back and everytime the tickover got a bit dodgy i'd clean it with that and it would be perfect again for anothe 10,000 miles. No doubt you've already tried it but if not, it's worth a go...... Whatever you do DON'T TOUCH the fine wire like a human hair that reads the airflow, very delicate!

    • @exeterrider
      @exeterrider  10 месяцев назад

      I haven't mate. Mine is fuel injected so no carbs...I love the bike but its just constantly putting me on edge. I bought this one and it isn't in the best of nick, and things like one of the cam cover bolts has lost its thread so never tightens and a couple other small things bug me . Even now it has a slow punture on the back so have to get that sorted now...its built so well but its had a hard life. It's done the Elephant rally as well years ago. I'll keep it for now, I like the looks and the way it rides.
      If she would let me, I'd moth ball it down the garden and get another but I'm only allowed the garage which is ok.
      Shes a keeper for now. Your bike is one of the most beautiful bikes in the Devon lanes, not only for the bike but it's history. I think BMW did a wonderful job back in the day,and 1998 was when it all started going a bit wrong.
      Mine has no ABS either which was something on later bikes had issues.

    • @kenbrooks7794
      @kenbrooks7794 10 месяцев назад

      @@exeterrider No i know you havent got carbs, the MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor) reads how much air is being drawn through the throttle bodies (determined by how much the throttle is open) and relays that info back to the ECU so that it injects the correct amount of fuel into the cylinders. If the little sensor wire is dirty, it thinks that there's less air flowing through the bodies than there actually is so it gives the injection system the wrong info, Quite a common problem, especially if the air filter hasn't been changed regularly. I get that the ol' girls had a hard life, but bearing that in mind, look at the condition of her! Lesser makes would've been up the breakers by now! I reckon that you probably dodged the bullet with the ABS, I did hear that it was a bit troublesome at the time. Isn't it funny how we all look back and hanker for the machinery of yesteryear? See, you like my ol' thing (thank you for your kind remarks) but i look back and think that the Beemers of the late 60s and through the 70s were better, beautifully finished with coachlining on the tank and mudguards,,,, Superb!
