      Joseph Scott Never said America hasn't done anything good. You made a list of good things but you ignore the horrible atrocities that have been committed inside and outside our country. What about slavery, genocide of the native people, Jim crow, Vietnam, Iraq, our country is comfortable invading and occupying countries that never attacked us, police killing unarmed people and not being held accountable, police bashing the heads of protestors, having the highest incarceration rate in the world, Goverment spying on citizens. I could go on all day. This country is better to live in than most but it's not a great country.

    'I'm leaving the country' "Go ahead, no one cares" 😂

    • @RFC3514
      @RFC3514 7 лет назад +13

      Of course, by that logic you should stick with your cable provider / phone company / etc. regardless of what they do, because "no one cares" about a single client leaving. But I'm pretty sure people who decide to leave the country don't expect their (individual) absence to make a difference to _everyone else_. It's more about making a difference to _themselves_. And, if _enough_ people leave (just like if enough people switch to a different company), then it might have some broader influence.

    • @evrena5210
      @evrena5210 7 лет назад +5

      RFC3514 Well said

    • @timhulsizer
      @timhulsizer 7 лет назад +24

      RFC3514, leaving the country in the hopes that your absence will be noticed and will create change is a terrible plan. Staying and getting involved is the only way real change will happen.

    • @RFC3514
      @RFC3514 7 лет назад +10

      Channel T - Did you read what I wrote? No one leaves "in the hopes that your absence will be noticed" - just like your cable company doesn't care if a single client leaves. That's false logic. People leave so _they_ notice the change in _their_ lives (and also because they prefer to contribute to a society or company that better reflects their values).
      This notion that people need to stay in the country where they were born forever is kind of medieval. The USA was founded by people who chose to _not_ stay in their country of birth. And that was in a time when travel was much harder than now. It's perfectly normal for someone who doesn't like the current climate in the USA to move somewhere else. Not only can that be an immediate improvement in their lives, but they might also prefer to see their taxes go to a social / political project that they agree with.
      Anyway, "real change" is _already_ happening; half the voters picked Trump, and their opinion is worth as much as the opinion of the ones that didn't. Sure, if you want (or _have to_ stay), get involved and try to change things, but there's nothing wrong with moving somewhere else - history is full of people who did just that, and achieved a lot more than they would have if they'd stayed in the same place for their entire lives.
      Do you also think that, if you're not happy with Comcast, you should stay a Comcast client and "get involved so real change will happen"? Especially if 50% of Comcast's clients were pulling in the opposite direction?

    • @timhulsizer
      @timhulsizer 7 лет назад +3

      I was referring to the part where you said, "if enough people leave [...] then it might have some broader influence."

    And this is said by someone who’s made X/NC-17 rated films that’s so graphic that it’d make any normal person faint. John Waters is hilarious. SERIAL MOM and CECIL B. DEMENTED are both great, absolutely hilarious films. A DIRTY SHAME shouldn’t have been shot in the foot because of its NC-17 classification. I hope he keeps making more outrageous stuff!

    I first saw "Pink Flamingos" as a graduate student in Wisconsin maybe a year after it was made, before it went national and became a cult film. Only John Waters could have made that film. The parts of the film that didn't hit you in the face, in a way were very much like this interview.
    "Well Miss Sandstone, Miss Sandy Sandstone, I guess there are just two kind of people in this world. My kind of people and a**holes...."

    Oh, yeah! I can just see John Waters bringing back a "Plato's Retreat" kind of club to NYC & calling it, "Flip Flop!" Perfect! Please, bring it on! ;-)

    John Waters is a class act. Unlike Hunter Thompson, who looked like a decent guy, talked a good talk, then would snort a line of coke, light up a joint, sip some whiskey and say 'we're all doomed anyways'. John comes out weirdly classy, but then his friendly exuberance wins you over, and then he'll describe what it must've been like spending a night at Michael Jackson's Neverland, and as you're laughing - you want John removed from the premises never to return. Just brilliantly American IMHO.

    John Waters is : Iconic, underrated, visionary Genius of a Renaissance Man, deserving to be at the helm of modern day directorialship. He’s proven to have full on concepts of entertaining and he really hits all the check marks of a Bonafide Icon. We need more gay and lbtq2 characters on television !!!

    What gets lost, about this guy is how amazingly kind and thoughtful he is, not only did Patty Hearst, give him the sunglasses she was arrested wearing, she also claimed, she would do "anything for him." which seems to be a common theme, of those who have worked with him.

    John Waters’ apartment was directly above mine back in the 80s. As a professional trombonist, I practiced constantly. One day my sister Diana and I got in the elevator and John was standing in the corner. “Hi Mr. Waters, I’m the guy who lives in 605, directly below you”. He looked at me, my trombone gig bag, then back at me. “Yeah, I know”, he said in a withering tone. He moved out shortly after Hairspray made it big.
