Every time I go back to my Safari after using fancier pens for a while I’m surprised by how nice it is all over again. Comfy, lightweight, nice writer. I’m slowly getting my wife into fountain pens and she’s expressed a desire to collect a bunch of Safaris and Al-Stars. I’m excited! 😁
I completely agree with you. I have the same pen with an extra fine nib, and I absolutely love it. Of all my Safari's, this one is my favorite. Also love the matching ink for the same reasons you do. I've been hoarding the ink in case it disappears. Glad to see you giving this particular Lamy some love!
If you like wetter nibs, you should try out the Lamy cursive nib, the one with the Chinese word on the top. It's a much wetter nib out of the box. I find that out of the box, the gold nibs tend to write wetter than the steel ones, but out of the box, the cursive nib is generally wetter than any of the others. The narrow tined shape also changes the feel a lot, and it doesn't feel as stiff. Of course though, if any of these nibs are tuned by someone, the flow can be easily adjusted, but if we're talking out of the box, that usually how they seem to go. I have tons of the Lamy Safari and Nexx and a few ABC. A few of mine have custom grinds, and quite a few of them are also tuned and the flow adjusted
I can only agree, Safaris,Al-Stars etc are great. Mine are all normal to wet, I can’t complain, I love using all different nibs and swab around. Also the cap seals very well- over the summer school holidays the safari was is the pencil case for around 2 months. First week of school, wrote. No Parker, no Pelikan did. I had 3 old Safaris for 25-30 years inked (yes , I know …) and they cleaned out so easily and write perfectly. So yay to the safaris!
On discount, I got the Vista with a M nib a couple of years ago, and my 3rd fountain pen. Smooth, which puzzled me when others reported its reputation for scratchy nibs. Still one of favorite writers, so much so, I got a Vista Black, and put the Lamy Cursive nib on it.
1:59 ...FAVORITE FOUNTAIN PEN REVEAL Made from tough ASA plastic or - transparent or in attractive colours. With a striking, self-sprung clip. The Lamy Safari was designed by Wolfgang Fabian and Bernt Spiegel of the Entwicklungsgruppe Mannheim which remains in production from 1980. Consequently, they encourage a fatigue-free writing posture and speed up the development of clearly legible handwriting.
I agree with your take on the Lamy Safari nibs. I have several of them and only one that I really like to write with: the SE Savanah Green. Where it flows nicely and writes well and smooth, the other ones I have are varying degrees of scratchy and unpleasant to write with.
Good to see things are slowly getting better. I like and use my Lamy Safari, AL, and LX frequently with no problems (for some reason I am liking my AL this week). I tend to use EF nibs most of the time, and F and M nibs regularly but with a little less frequency and they seem to work well, too. When I’ve had an issue (say hard starts or a dry writer) I take the nib off and clean it-usually there’s something clogging the feed-and it works fine afterwards. I have noticed some inks work better than others (Diamine for one). Also, if I want to make the pen a little wetter, I take out a piece Mylar, a brass shim, or feeler gauge, and run it through the slit once, test it, repeat until the desired wetness. If I louse up the nib, I just replace it-they’re not too expensive.
Agree. I do not like Lamy’s at all. Even the 2000. 🫣. The nibs are just not for me. Too stiff. And feel scratchy. But I’m in the totally minority. So it must just be me!
I collect the special edition colour safari's and usually the nibs are grand. Once or twice, I've had a scratch monster, but every now and then, the planets align, the angels sing and you get a nib that feels beyond amazing. Both new releases this year jad nibs like that and I am completely smitten with them. The colours are great too, dark and interesting, love the matching inks as well.
I've recently come to the realization that the Safari is the single most comfortable pen in my collection. This is especially significant for lengthy writing, but with even short notes it is a pleasure for my fingers.
I don't think I've heard anymore describe the Blackberry ink as having a green sheen, it's pretty firmly a bronze-y/gold sheen. A mega sheener at that. I love it.
Just seeing this now. Although I got the pink cliff, I had the same experience! I wrote elsewhere, on my "ten pen" list: "Lamy Safari Pink Cliff with DeAtramentis Document Fuchsia ink. I've been using this pen for the line work in my comics since I got it, and it's the first Lamy I've really enjoyed." 💕
I have a glossy black Lamy Safari with a yellow section. My own concoction. I love it when I take the cap off. Wow Glossy YELLOW. Medium nib smooth and wet. I use it with Lamy Turquoise ink. The ink shades beautifully.
I bought both of the Safaris this year, I couldn’t resist the colours. I genuinely love them, I got one with a LH nib and one with an F nib. I've used the LH so much, I love it. I only own 8 pens, I'm still new to my fountain pen journey. I just need to get fountain pen friendly journals so I can use my pens more.
Yayyyy got cool points!! I'm so glad you're back, Kerry! And glad Parker is improving 😻 The stress of having a sick fur baby is the worst, isn't it? I like that you come back to brands you haven't loved before and are open to new opinions on them.
I bought the pink cliff pen because I fell off a literal actual cliff last fall and what are the chances that Lamy named a pen and ink CLIFF soon after??? I love the idea of the safari more than I've ever loved an actual safari. I like the snap cap, the swappable nibs etc. I'm annoyed that I have to buy a converter or cartridges and I've had the same experience with dry nibs. COOL POINTS! Sending good thoughts to you and Parker!
Cool points! I love my Lamy Safaris. The Derk Likac was my first fountain pen and I have several. All have been great writers but they do dry out if sitting around for a long time. I recommend trying a cursive job for one, just for fun. I write smallish and it doesn’t work for my small writing but it is a fun nib to play with for signing cards or writing something different.
Cool points! This was my second fountain pen, I have it with medium nib. It writes really smoothly, but because my handwriting is pretty small, it’s not perfect for me.
I bought the same one, and it’s also one of my favorites. The nib is hugely better than many of my others. I don’t know what happened, but I’m delighted.
Synchronicity that you found "the" Lamy Safari that you obviously truly enjoy! Happy for you. That Blackberry ink has crazy sheen. It's very nice looking. I've never owned a Lamy Safari;but, when I saw the glowing anomaly that is the Lamy AL-Star aquatic I had to order one. Just hope that it writes as wet as your Violet Blackberry. I got a medium nib with the pen and spare broad/black nib just in case. I opted for Lamy "cliff" ink. Keeping you and Parker in my prayers.
Cool points but just wanted to say I just bought a charcoal Safari. Last time I got a safari was over 10 years ago I had gone through ( aka lost) 3 of them before moving on. Now it's back! I needed a pen for work (a commercial bindery) one that I knew I wouldn't be too sad to lose but still really enjoy and be functional. That's my safari story. Thanks for the vid.
The Safari was my first ever fountain pen and is still one of my top favourites! You mentioned some rather cool points about this pen. I will forever be a Lamy fan, eventually I'd love to get an Lx and Dialog cc!
Two safaris, one charcoal and a light green And Mixed the parts - love the color mix - put the gold nib on one And an EF on the other - loving the pair ! Oh, and a yellow safari that’s pushing 30 !
I have a new favorite fountain pen as well, the Asvine V126. It is better and cheaper than the Penbbs 456. I bought the frosted black version, but I found the grip section a bit on the slippery side. Fortunately, I got my sister a transparent teal so I tried her pen out and to me the transparent acrylic is grippier so I got myself the transparent brown V126 and I must say it is my new everyday writer.
I just bought a yellow Safari and it's been my EDC pen for the last two weeks. It's my first Lamy, but my like 15th pen overall, and I'm so intrigued about other Lamy pens now.
One of the first pens I bought was a lamy vista, I had it as a main stay for most of the first half of my FP Journey. I ended up loosing it towards the middle there, and never replaced. However, I visited the Lamy store in Heidelberg earlier this month and I got a specific to Hiedleberg Lamy safari/al star, I love love love it. (I think it is al star, but I am not sure) It has quickly become one of my go tos. Cheers! -Vic
Cool points! Glad Parker is doing better. Have a great Al-star medium: it writes beautifully, and another fine nib that is not so good. But just can’t enjoy the grip so I’ve moved on to other more comfortable ones for me.
Yay I got cool points! :D Glad to hear that Parker is getting better. Having a sick furbaby is always a huge worry. My Lamy Safari was an EF and I hated how stiff and scratchy the nib was. Instead of toss it or buy a whole new pen, I bought three Lamy nibs, a broad, a 1.1 stub and a 1.5 stub, to swap them out and try different options (I didnt get F or M because I already have plenty of other pens with those nib sizes). Out of the three I like the 1.1 stub best but I haven't used it for anything other than lettering practise, which I don't do very often. It's still one of the least favourite pens in my collection - the only one I like less is the Jinhao 992.
That is a nice looking pen, the colour combination works great. For me the main thing stopping me from considering the Safari and similar is still that clip. I understand and can see how it's a good and very functional clip, but for me the look is just a little off.
Collecting all the cool points! Love my Vista! It was my first FP last December and it's smooth and flows so well. But now that I have more pens I don't use it as much. There's so many pens and inks to discover. I think I will splurge a little and get myself a nice pen for my Birthday this year - it's an even big -0 year this year. 🤫 It's leaning towards a beautiful Wancher but that could change, I am a Gemini after all. 😁 Keeping my fingers crossed for Parker. Give her a lot of hugs and cuddles from me. 😇🩷🙏🙌🇸🇪
cool points 😁 I really like Safaris & Al Stars, my first FPs were from their type. I REALLY wish they would get their act together on ink releases. As far as I know the Violet Blackberry has not been available here yet (Australia) & I have been waiting! Thank you for sharing 🥴
I am with you on the Lamy Safari. I love the 2024 SE. I am also with you on TWSBI. They pump out way too many SEs, when they should be focussing on improving quality control.
Interesting. I've been using 2 Sailor Fude pens and a Platinum Preppy in fine. I don't particularly care about appearance as much as function and simple ability to change or recharge inks. This week I received a new Lamy Safari with an extra fine nib. I was expecting it to be a bit scratchy however I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it wrote on ordinary paper. For me I find the finger position they have crafted into the pen too close to the nib for my style of writing. I can easily adapt to it, I'm hoping. Either way it is what most people say about a Lamy Safari.
I don’t know why, but I like the Lamy black nibs better than the steel nib, don’t know if there is suppose to be a difference, but it definitely feels better. I have quite a few Safaris and All Stars, and replaced nibs with the black nibs.
I can’t believe you’re saying this because I am having the same relationship with mine. I think the Z28 converter was messed up and so I just put a cartridge in it and now it’s a dream. But I don’t want to give up on putting different inks in it! I thought to myself if she say LAMY Safari I’m going to crack up! I’m just wondering, have you ever tried a little bit of white lightning in there to see what it does for your other LAMY? Just as an experiment I would love to see that.
I know a LOT of people really like the Pilot Metropolitan. But I just can't get past the sharp step-down at the grip section, the shortness of the grip section which causes me to end up with my thumb right on that step-down. It feels a bit short if not posted, but it doesn't post well. I haven't tried the Lamy yet, but triangular grips don't bother me, so I may give it a try.
My Lamy Safari Charcoal with a medium also writes absolutely wonderfully. My broad Lamy nib is also quite good, but EF and F are nothing to write home about :/
Are you saying you "can't even" ? ;-) I thought it was HILARIOUS how the fountain pen world was all in an uproar about the Dark Lilac controversy. I've never gotten a Lamy because we have the same appreciation for a wet writer. But this makes me want to dip my toes in the Lamy pool. SO GLAD that Parker is doing better! Cool points for her! 🙂
I OCD about having the Lamy branding aligned with the nib, please tell me I am not the only one. I bought this pen as well for the colour combination, I was used to the AL star that are a bit heavier, but it is just so satisfying to write with after I got used to the different weight
Safari's are great. The 1st one I got (in late 1990s) actually disappointed me (There may have been some issues with the nib.) But my recent purchase (Violet Blackberry) is great. Maybe I'll get out the old Lamy and try it again -- maybe swap in a different nib. Thanks for the video.
Cool points! 😊. Glad to hear Parker is doing better!!! One day can you bring him on just to say hi??? I have this exact pen and I can’t believe I never owned a Safari! I have 4 Al-Stars but I figured the Safari is the same pen. I was VERY surprised at the difference! I probably will have that be my EDC, especially for work. I actually compare it to my Jinhao X450 which is also a VERY wet writer. But my Pilot MP is my first love into the world (never ending rabbit hole) of fountain pens! Now, if I can only find a good EDC blue document ink. Any suggestions??? Great review! Take care of yourself and Parker! God bless you! 😊
The pen is a definite love / hate thing. I love Lamy products but this pen is so decisive with the grip section. I cannot get past it to own one, or should I say keep one. I have had a number of them and keep tryna ng to use it but the section is so uncomfortable.
I liked my yellow Safari when I tested it at Uwajimaya; and, decided to buy it. But,shortly after, the grip annoyed me too much. So, I purged it, and its converter, to someone who always wanted a fountain pen; but, never got around to it. My LAMY 2000 is one of my favorite "babies". As for the Pilot Metropolitan, I still love the one I bought shortly after I started my fountain pen journey. 🥰 And, I still love my TWSBI collection, even though I don't use them as much, lately.
Lamys basic steel nibs (except for the ef) are all machine stamped, ground, and tested, yet some how in the last 5 years the quality has been wildly inconsistent 🤔
Cool points... Also...a super secret lamy nib hack. If you take a slim metal rod like a 3-4 mm drill bit and gently press the center of the nib down on it while holding the wings for a few seconds it will round out the nib a bit. You can always press it flatter and try again bbbbuuutttt if you get just a little lift in the center it may hard start if you haven't used your lamy in a could days but it can double, sometimes triple the flow... Make that 2 channel feed work for it's ink!
Loving the video already "time is a bowl of soup". So true. I don't like that specific Lamy Safari. I'd prefer to frankenpen my lamy safaris myself and not to buy them frankenpenned already to their taste. I find it limiting. Have you tried their cursive black nib? It's super smooth and fun to write with. Coolpoints🎉
As to the LAMY proprietary cartridge and converter: I'd love a side by side, with measurements, between the LAMY and the Parker ones. I'm having suspicions that LAMY copied the Parker. As for dry writing: probably why your preference is more modern. Vintage pens could be very dry writing, compared to today, and especially student pens like the Safari. Didn't want messes in classrooms. 😁
Worst pen I ever had the displeasure of owning. The one I received wouldn’t write. It felt like a rusty fishhook on sandpaper. I worked on the nib but it was never ok. All the groups explained that all of theirs were smooth as silk. I decided that maybe I was unlucky enough to get that 1 in 100 that wasn’t any good. So, I orders a new stock nib for $16 from Goulet and I swear to god, that nib was trash too. Fool me twice, shame on me. It was better than the first one but still all out of whack. After some time being irritated in the sink with ink all over my hands, I stabbed it into the counter until it was a bunch of busted up plastic and chucked it in the garbage.. and put Lamy, as a company, FAR off in my rear view mirror. Too much competition out there wanting my business. The next day I ordered two Esterbrooks and a Pelikan… but that’s a story for another time.
That magazine sounds terrible, biased and unethical. They should’ve paid a kill fee if they didn’t want to run it and shame on them for not wanting to run it because they didn’t like the honesty!
Every time I go back to my Safari after using fancier pens for a while I’m surprised by how nice it is all over again. Comfy, lightweight, nice writer.

Oh Yes! ME TOO! Same Safari as well. I just love it in Medium with matching ink! Haven't picked up a Safari in years

Concerning the Lamy Safari/Vista/Al-star, I have owned a few, and all of them were dry and scratchy (writing-on-sand kind of scratchy).
Agree. I do not like Lamy’s at all. Even the 2000. 🫣. The nibs are just not for me. Too stiff. And feel scratchy. But I’m in the totally minority. So it must just be me!

Of all the purple inks I've owned the van diemens aurora australis is still my favourite.

I have a glossy black Lamy Safari with a yellow section.
My own concoction. I love it when I take the cap off. Wow Glossy YELLOW. Medium nib smooth and wet.
I use it with Lamy Turquoise ink. The ink shades beautifully.
I love the all-stars they have proven to be a ride or die.
so many cool points! 🎉 that's the first time I've seen that ink, and it looks so nice. thanks for sharing

The Lamy Safari has always been a pleasant surprise. If it cost more, maybe it would get respect. Cool Points
Yayyyy got cool points!!

I own 2 Lamys. 1 AL star and one Vista. Both write very well, even better that some of my more expensive pens.

Keeping you and Parker in my prayers.
Cool points. I'm glad Parker is doing better. I wish I could like Lamy Safaris, but I just can't with that grip section.
I recently purchased my first LAMY Safari. Pink Cliff in EF. Writes really well, and is not a dry writer. Very nice nib, will lay a bead of ink down.
Cool points but just wanted to say I just bought a charcoal Safari. Last time I got a safari was over 10 years ago I had gone through ( aka lost) 3 of them before moving on. Now it's back! Cool points 😎 "I've written off this pen.." Almost spat out my tea! 😆 Love your videos, don't ever change!
One of the first pens I bought was a lamy vista, I had it as a main stay for most of the first half of my FP Journey. I ended up loosing it towards the middle there, and never replaced. Cool points! Glad Parker is doing better. Have a great Al-star medium: it writes beautifully, and another fine nib that is not so good. But just can’t enjoy the grip so I’ve moved on to other more comfortable ones for me.
Time is a bowl of soup i need that on a t shirt
It’s a Fearn Calloway saying from Critical Role lol
Agree!
It's still one of the least favourite pens in my collection - the only one I like less is the Jinhao 992.
cool points! I love your videos. So good, to see new content coming out from you.
Love the books…especially the Wheel of Time series to to your right… great video btw
Happy you're back, giving us great videos
That is a nice looking pen, the colour combination works great.
For me the main thing stopping me from considering the Safari and similar is still that clip. I understand and can see how it's a good and very functional clip, but for me the look is just a little off.
I agree! To me it looks like a clothespin.
It doesn't snag, doesn't pull, and you can remove the clip without damaging the pen.
I love that you have Robert Jordan books on your bookshelf. I'm currently re-reading the Wheel of Time.
13:00 cool points! Glad you’re back. And prayers for Parker!
I know they’re very popular, but I don’t like how the triangular grip feels. They sure are creative with the color combos, though.
Collecting all the cool points! Love my Vista! It was my first FP last December and it's smooth and flows so well. But now that I have more pens I don't use it as much. Cool points! Thank you.
I haven't tried a Lamy yet. Their look didn't appeal to me. But the day may come!
I'm so glad you're back! I missed ya!
I love the Lamy Safari; however, they dry up if you don’t use regularly.
Happens the exact same to me with the metropolitan, it even hurts my wrist. Try the Lamy, it’s super comfy for me.
My Lamy Safari Charcoal with a medium also writes absolutely wonderfully. My broad Lamy nib is also quite good, but EF and F are nothing to write home about :/
Cool points 🎉 Happy Parker is doing better!
Cool Points!
I have (had) 3 Lamy Safaris (ok, the latest is the AL-star) - all great, no scratchy. Pbly just lucky
Yayyy to cool points!!! I actually love my jinhao shark a lot xDD
Let’s put “Time is just a bowl of soup” on a sticker, shall we?
I’ve never really used any document inks because I don’t wanna have to clean them out of my pens lol
And, I still love my TWSBI collection, even though I don't use them as much, lately.
Light Bringer is in paperback now, you should complete your collection. :P
Noted! Lol
Coolpoints🎉
Cool points!
Lol cool points.
Yay Parker!

Heretic! If the Kaweco Piston Sport is not your new favourite pen, you will be expelled from the Fellowship of the Nib! 😂

Time is soup?
cool Points .
I hate the grip section 😂
The next day I ordered two Esterbrooks and a Pelikan… but that’s a story for another time.
can't hang in waiting for the point. bye
That magazine sounds terrible, biased and unethical. They should’ve paid a kill fee if they didn’t want to run it and shame on them for not wanting to run it because they didn’t like the honesty!
Safari over MP any day………..
Al Star > Safari
Well, that was underwhelming.
