I could find only 1 theatre in Ikebukuro with only 1 show per day! (I've checked on the site and subbed version is no more there). Japan is ruled by Disney, people would buy anything from the mouse.
i agree about disney. But i apologizing, if i dissappointed you... many japanese people don't care what kind of anime they watch, as it's slowly starting to become a “daily food”. @@yuki_arthouse everyone has got a chance to do it here. Most of artists start with Twitter art account and then go to big events like Design Festa. Easiest way to get popular is to make characters looking similar to Sanrio or Vtubers
Yeah honestly it is such a weird choice of them to nominate Mufasa which as you say is a movie full of CG Animals but not Sonic 3, which while it does of course have CG Characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow, it is mostly full of human beings. There's people of different skin colours and it has both men and women, so to me it is very strange that the movie with a lot of diversity isn't eligible for the Oscar's but the movie who's cast are a bunch of different species of animals is.
Seems like another strings Disney pulled behind public but obviously noticable who doesn't notice they just blinded by hate However Japan might just upset for that one Sonic line "Konichi-whaat?" Mufasa has 0 diversity In Sonic 3 movie it had many diverse characters in the background and also Stone too Oscars never really been 100% fair to begin with, in the begining it may be but nowadays the best bootlickers win (shout out to the exception that deserves it for everything they put into it) Mufasa was already released where i am ,yet i couldn't even see Sonic 3 in theaters Which is kinda suspicious how theaters silencing it yet showing Mufasa alot Some may say "Disney just bought a lot of screens in the theaters while Paramount doesn't" but bruh isn't it strange that its only happens with Sonic 3 while other movies has no issue whatso ever? Especially after this drama with Disney it feels and seems no screen issue cuz they have the money to do that too I seen comments from other people under videos they had trouble finding way to watch it If Paramount would've ducked it up they would probably tweet about the change of things and wouldve comfirmed about it Like its all strange Sonic 3 stomped Mufasa film strong then suddenly after the CEO of Disney started acting toxic , desperate and unprofessional thowards Sonic 3 and talking stuff and lying on social media about being #1 when that time they weren't They were still low but after some point they suddenly just get the upperhand and how much now the oscars favor to Disney which smells If they wouldn't been known for being shady just like with gatekeeping Mickey Mouse from public domain for years somehow when they should've give up on it or they soulless corporate that give damn about fans and only cares about money and if not for their social stunts they were doing on twitter i would hardly suspect them
I find it funny no one is even bringing up the (HEAVILY IMPLIED in saying that because one person will get angry if I dont) relationship between robotnik and stone (with some of the scenes in the trilogy you can not look at me with a straight face and say "yes that's completely heterosexual behavior")
Man, I know what you were going for there, but that elongated ok at the end read to me as "ook" at first. Like you turned into the Librarian from Discworld for a sec.
To the point that a few influences for Sonic's design and character came from two American figures: Michael Jackson, and (I kid you not) President Bill Clinton (on a related note, the character that would eventually become Doctor Eggman was based slightly on President Teddy Roosevelt.) So, we got TWO United States Presidents and one American Pop Singer serving as the inspiration for 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog.
@@MetroXLR-99 You don't have to be American to make that the source of inspiration though. The Japanese lore of Sonic has him come from Christmas Island, not the US one, you'd think Christmas would come from the American side but no. Even the Star Wars inspiration Sonic has is from the JP side despite it being an American movie series. What's to say MJ, Teddy and Clinton aren't? One good example of both American and Japanese being incorporated into one character is Tails. JP wanted Miles Prower, America wanted Tails. So to compensate, they made his real name Miles Prower and Tails his nickname given to him by Sonic.
I will say this, as someone who works at a movie theater, sonic 3 DOMINATES Mufasa. if I remember correctly, sonic 3 had triple amount of people seeing it than Mufasa on its opening weekend ok nevermind I looked it up and Mufasa is doing better than sonic 3 rn. that's my bad I made this comment to share information based on what my theater is getting.
Sonic Frontiers actually sold really well in Japan, same with Shadow Gens, and before then, even forces which did actually solid. Previous older sonic games like sa1, sa2, shadow the hedgehog, and 06 also did well there. Japan just doesn't like the Sonic live action films.
guess they love their 2 d stuff. like the 1990 sonic film. (dont know exact year 😢) but still! hating on their own mascot? (got the mascot thing from the internet)
Meh, I don't blame Japan for that tbh, cuz' on one hand? I did enjoy the Sonic movies, mostly because of the songs like my 2 favorite ones "Stars In The Sky" by Kid Cudi and "Run It" by Jelly Roll along with the merch like the Jakks Pacific toylines. But on the other hand? what usually ruins them for me is crappy drama like what this video's talking about for example along with those lousy "Sonic 3 vs. Mufasa" parodies as they're now causing me to make Sonic 3 the last time I ever watch Sonic movies tbh lol. I'm usually fine with Sonic movies 1 & 2 beating Birds of Prey and Mobius since while I also maybe a DC and Marvel fan besides Sonic? I never cared for those two movies either, but "Sonic 3 vs. Mufasa" however even tho' I did sorta enjoy that movie and all while remaining neutral over the other is another matter entirely.
no man, this ''sell well'' numbers means what we already know, that sonic has a solid and dedicated fnabase in japan but is a ninch not a mainstream franchise, sonic don't sell that well in japan to be mainstream
The reason it's not eligible is that it doesn't follow Hollywood's forced, unnatural version of inclusion, where diversity is used as a marketing ploy to distract from poor writing (cough Disney cough). True inclusion shines when it feels natural, like in the Sonic movies, where characters and storytelling take precedence. Some studios often pretend to care about representation but are really chasing trends to boost sales. We need more films like Sonic, where inclusion is seamless, supported by great storytelling, action, and characters. Hilariously a quote from Sonic Boom by Knuckles sums up the entirety of this, I know it's mainly about feminism but it can apply to many things "You know, Amy, anytime someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo"
This is exactly what my dad has been saying! All of the actors in the movie seem real and normal so you don’t even notice their race like in real life. Unlike Disney who you can tell just slaps characters from different races as a coverup in hopes that you’d ignore the bad story for the political stuff.
@@Earlybeggaron a serious note, what are you smoking? (And can I have some?) Because there's no way Mufasa is getting an Oscar other than Sonic 3,it's rigged they scrape off Sonic because it's Sonic of course
The Kids Choice Awards are more valid then the Oscar's because normal people (even if they're just kids) vote in that, the Oscars are just the Hollywood elite...
To be fair, Sonic content has a pretty rich history of being surprisingly unpopular in Japan. Like, the Mega Drive (aka the Genesis) was a borderline flop over there while the Saturn was a resounding success there. It wasn't unheard of for Saturn owners to have literally never heard of Sonic, and rectifying this was one of the main motivations behind the creation of Sonic Jam. That said, Sonic was designed to be west-friendly in nature (to the point that, supposedly, the original template for his personality was based on US President Kennedy), so I guess it makes sense.
Sega always kinda intended Sonic to break into the American market (that Nintendo dominated) as his design was meant to look American. Sonic's colors are even red, white, and blue like the USA flag.
Probably Sonic it's not popular in Japan because it doesn't have sexy lolis that simps so hard the protagonist, a harem of a lot of girls that follows blindy the protagonist because of plot convenience, characters that bleeds like 5000 litters of blood in a fight, none of the games of Sonic have Japan elements and it's not occurring in Japan, Sonic is not a Isekai and Sonic doesn't want to be the strongest being in the universe like every anime protagonist that are Goku-like characters
They do not hate it, I lean more towards thinking it just isn't that big, as we know sonic isn't that big over there, so no wonder the movie doesn't do well there.
I would've told you that the "Japan hates Sonic" crap that this video's talking about is just false. But nah, you just wanna be all "positive" about it lol.
They’ve bullied theaters into showing Mufasa on more screens than Sonic 3. And keep in mind Sonic’s international numbers shouldn’t really be put into consideration since Sonic 3 isn’t even out in Turkey so the international box office for it isn’t complete
Yup, Sonic 3's box office predictions are always skewed against it. You need to wait 4-5 days (or 1-2 weeks for international) for the data to become accurate
I live in Poland and the movie was already available in cinemas at a regular price more than a week before the official "release date", and I'd say that the theater was pretty packed when I went to watch it, and that was only the one location, so who knows how much it made before January 3rd! My point is that box office mojo wouldn't show the gross for Poland until like the 5th of January, and it only shows how much the movie made in those 2 days. So yeah, I'd say that there's something weird going on here.
Sonic 3 deserves better, the movie doesn’t deserve to be treated this way, because I know Disney is scared and they didn’t want Sonic 3 to win and I feel like Disney cheated and the Sonic movie franchise is about to become the new good movie franchise
@@destroyerzilla7634 Exactly, plus, I'm also a fan of both Sonic and Disney anyway, so whatever that conspiracy dude's talking about is just pure nonsense lol.
I'm not surprised about the nomination. I think Disney was also sabotaging Sanic 3. I honestly doubt whatever numbers Mufasa's, are even legit. Sonic 3's sole purpose is to just shit on Mufasa and any Disney remake at this point
Hate to sound like a broken record, but Sonic wasn’t a big hit in Japan. While the series is known in Japan, it’s not a huge deal there compared to Mario, or Final Fantasy, or even Pokemon. It’s pretty much niche in Japan whereas in the states, it’s popular.
I like both Sonic and Japan while I'm also usually more of a DK fan than a Mario one (*even tho' I'm not much trustworthy with the Sonic fandom itself sometimes.) but I guess that's fair. I didn't wanna say this, but I'mma have to make Sonic 3 my last Sonic movie to watch since I'm starting to get a little bit of a burnout from them now even tho' I still enjoyed the Sonic franchise as whole with my other favorites/guilty pleasure like Sonic X and Sonic Colors tbh lol.
As someone that lives in Japan and saw the movie twice here, I can tell you that Japan doesn’t hate Sonic, rather, he’s not as popular here as in the West. I was in Tokyo when I saw it and the theaters were really empty. Not sure if it was just lack of interest or bad advertising, as I saw the Oshi no Ko live-action movie as well and that theater was packed in comparison. SEGA’s failing our boy domestically 🥲
Yeah they hid so much. I was visiting France when Sonic 3 dropped, every single bus had Sonic Movie 3 posters on it. There was no way it made no money on opening with that many posters.
Honestly, I don’t even care what Japan even thinks about sonic they can hate their own creation, but I believe sonics true love and fans are in the west
Japan likes Sonic enough, there's just an obvious brand split between Japanese Sonic and Western Sonic. Japan doesn't care about Western Sonic, because he's generally a very different character in the Western brand. Japanese Sonic is a Shounen protagonist, while Western Sonic is practically an MCU character.
You actually needn't worry that much about the Box Office part. A RUclipsr named Valliant Renegade did the statistics with two of his friends on Mufasa vs Sonic and which one was making more. While yes, Mufasa was earning more, Sonic was still in the lead of the monetary growth while Disney is having a steady economic recession.
I mean people say that, I think of course Sonic is going to make more money than Mufasa. But what I've seen in my experience working in theaters, at least in my country. A lot more people are watching Mufasa than Sonic, both with premium screens and the same amount of screens. It's true that's my personal experience.
The people crying now the movie isn’t inclusive enough is so silly, there’s three black actors that showed up, the main couple is a mixed race couple that have adopted three “aliens” that aren’t their own race. It’s plenty diverse enough lol
All Sonic movies have done poorly in Japan but man, this just takes the cake so a movie in it's 4th week is still number 1 meanwhile Sonic 4 in it's 2nd week drops entirely from the top 10 in Japan... well there goes my 500 million total prediction
I’m surprised that Sonic 3 Movie didn’t hit in Japan at all becuase Japan is the place where Sonic was born. Also even in kinda beginning the movie take place in Tokyo. I’m really shocked.
While Sonic was created in Japan, he and his games were designed to appeal to Western, particularly to U.S., players. Though to be fair, Sonic isn't very popular in most of Asia, all of Sonic's live-action movies flopped in China and South Korea
This isn't new. From my understanding, a lot of Japan didn't like the first 2 Sonic movies either, so it's not a surprise to me that many people in Japan weren't interested/didn't like Sonic 3.
So just like my Fellow Filipino Audiences are mostly No Longer Interested in local Filipino Movies Anymore? Seems Filipinos are also not interested in watching Local Filipino Films just like Japanese mostly didn't watch 3 films of Sonic Right?
I have a feeling, Disney had a temper tantrum and wanted Sonic 3 Banned from the Oscar's because it's projected to make more money than their Soulless Mufasa film.
I'm in Argentina right now and had to wait until January 2nd to watch the movie I literally cried for when I eventually did watch it. Super pissed it didn't come sooner.
a lot of the information gathering for box office numbers is really weird to me. i'm from brazil and i've seen sources say the movie premiered on 2nd of january, when in reality it's been out since christmas day. not only that but it takes a very long time to update, i still see my cinema nearly packed for sonic 3 screenings weeks after release day and yet the reported grossing has been sat at $6.8m for a very long while
This video is lying about Sonic being hated in Japan. They literally have a JP account and you can see JP Sonic fans liking the content. One of Japan's most popular Vtubers, Korone, is an official SEGA AMBASSADOR. It's just NOT POPULAR in Japan as compared to the West. Those are two different things.
Face it dude, these people just love to listen to this guy and hate on Japan because of their overprotection-ness for their favorite SEGA mascot. I mean, I like the Sonic franchise and all? but these elitists goons including the one who made this video however give it a bad name lol.
@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 Thank you. Like people need to understand the difference of something that's hated and something that just never got popular. Disney has been getting a lot of hate over the years, yet despite that they are still popular. Most people already KNOW who Mufasa is, what Lion King is, and what DISNEY is because of its major success over almost 100 years in the business. They even indirectly influenced anime because of Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy) being inspired by Disney. OF COURSE Japan will like that. Sonic's marketing in Japan was different to how they marketed him here in the West. And since the 90s was all about being cool and "radical", SoA capitalized on it and that's how he got more popular here. Plus, I GUESS you can argue that he was made for a Western audience because of how he loves freedom and doesn't follow the rules (however I wonder how One Piece got as big as it did in Japan if that were the case lol)

Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't watched Sonic 3 yet! They can definitely pull it off. Remember that these three Sonic movies all had big challages when being made (Sonic 1 had to go through a whole redesign, Sonic 2 was during the pandemic, and Sonic 3 was written during a Writer's strike), so the team is 100% used to writing and making these movies while facing challages. Plus, assuming that Sonic 4 is based on Sonic CD, it's not like they are going to just port the story to the film. The director Jeff Fowler has stated that he prefers to pick themes and characters over just adaptating the stories as they are, so he's not afraid to change things that he doesn't think works with the story. Personally, I'm really excited for Sonic 4! As someone who isn't a Sonic fan but now has a new appreciation for the series and is checking out the games again due to the movies, I'm looking forward to what they do with Metal Sonic. He's always been one of my favorite Sonic Villians and they've already shown off that they have the design nailed down!
I mean Japan Historically has never really liked sonic the hedgehog. That was more of u.s based creation and design...ironically enough in Japan before sonic team split up into two sectors Its U.S Sector. And of course Japan. Hell When I went over to Japan There was more Mario and Pokémon merch then there was sonic. Sonic was basically nowhere to be found. And lets not forget how Disney Snubbed out Klause By forcing the oscars to choose an unwanted and unneeded Toystory Sequel that ruined basically all there characters. Which should've ended at 3. Klause was made by an independent film company that DIsney Robbed from them. Im convinced Disney Paid the Oscars for both this situation and Klause. Its very apparent that Disney basically owns the oscars at this point.

Well… I kinda expected it. Sonic is unpopular in Japan; he was deliberately made for westerners. So of course the movie is gonna flop there. Hell, I can assume that House of the Dead, another SEGA franchise that's also western-inspired, but almost lacks a Japanese dub despite being Japanese-made, is slightly more known than Sonic in Japan because the former's main characters are humans (albeit it mostly Americans) while the latter features talking animals as heroes instead of villains.
Japan: Wants Sonic to be like Mario and basically just be stagnant with barely a plot America: Wants Sonic to continue to have awesome stories like Sonic Adventure 2 (it and solo game literally biggest basis for Sonic Movie 3) Disney: Hates it because they can't seem to even try to listen to what people want, including what they do with companies they own/control "cough" MCU/Marvel "cough" Oscars: Hates it because it isn't a boring, pretentious wannabe artsy film about nothing or isn't part of "I support the current propaganda" I bet WB/Discovery are not happy either lol.

So Sonic 3 isn’t diverse enough for the Oscars, but Mufasa, a film full of CGI animals, is. Oooook. 🙄
Seems like another strings Disney pulled behind public but obviously noticable who doesn't notice they just blinded by hate
However Japan might just upset for that one Sonic line "Konichi-whaat?"
Mufasa has 0 diversity
In Sonic 3 movie it had many diverse characters in the background and also Stone too
Oscars never really been 100% fair to begin with, in the begining it may be but nowadays the best bootlickers win (shout out to the exception that deserves it for everything they put into it)
Mufasa was already released where i am ,yet i couldn't even see Sonic 3 in theaters
Which is kinda suspicious how theaters silencing it yet showing Mufasa alot
Some may say "Disney just bought a lot of screens in the theaters while Paramount doesn't" but bruh isn't it strange that its only happens with Sonic 3 while other movies has no issue whatso ever? Especially after this drama with Disney it feels and seems no screen issue cuz they have the money to do that too
I seen comments from other people under videos they had trouble finding way to watch it
If Paramount would've ducked it up they would probably tweet about the change of things and wouldve comfirmed about it
Like its all strange Sonic 3 stomped Mufasa film strong then suddenly after the CEO of Disney started acting toxic , desperate and unprofessional thowards Sonic 3 and talking stuff and lying on social media about being #1 when that time they weren't
They were still low but after some point they suddenly just get the upperhand and how much now the oscars favor to Disney which smells
If they wouldn't been known for being shady just like with gatekeeping Mickey Mouse from public domain for years somehow when they should've give up on it or they soulless corporate that give damn about fans and only cares about money and if not for their social stunts they were doing on twitter i would hardly suspect them
@@Jayesbe the main cast itself is also already pretty diverse without being forced

Sonic isn't a strictly Japanese creation. Sonic as a character was jointly developed by Sega of America and Sega of Japan.
To the point that a few influences for Sonic's design and character came from two American figures: Michael Jackson, and (I kid you not) President Bill Clinton
(on a related note, the character that would eventually become Doctor Eggman was based slightly on President Teddy Roosevelt.)
So, we got TWO United States Presidents and one American Pop Singer serving as the inspiration for 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog.
@@MetroXLR-99not to mention President Teddy Roosevelt!

Sonic Frontiers actually sold really well in Japan, same with Shadow Gens, and before then, even forces which did actually solid. Previous older sonic games like sa1, sa2, shadow the hedgehog, and 06 also did well there.
Japan just doesn't like the Sonic live action films.

Sonic as a franchise was directly made to appeal to Western audiences, it was never that popular in Japan.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is still the number one movie in the world and I heard it is really really good but "Mufasa" flopped.
I think you mean ol' Billy Clinton 😅
Sega always kinda intended Sonic to break into the American market (that Nintendo dominated) as his design was meant to look American. Sonic's colors are even red, white, and blue like the USA flag.
Sonic's personality was based on Bill Clinton, just as Eggman was based on Theodore Rooseveld.
I'm not joking.

@@QueRRie22 That just means i'm the only person above 18 in this comment section
@@EarlybeggarNah you're not the only one. I am too, I mean I don't mind both movies. I'm just failing to understand why both fanbases have to be toxic as heck towards one another.
Crazy thing, I’ve seen it twice, a week apart, and both instances the movie theater was full.
Saying that Sonic 3 wasn't a hit because Japan didn't like it seems like the same thing as saying that the Little Mermaid live-action movie wasn't popular in Asia because of racism.
Sonic 3 is only being beat my mufasa worldwide because it hasn't released internationally yet.
Sonic three does not deserve this. Why are people hating all of a sudden like what’s wrong with these people on earth? Something that’s so successful just by listening to the fans ,this whole situation proves that if movies listen to their fans, they will not be winners in the end
Whatever, if it wasn't for the toxic Sonic fandom's stupid "Sonic 3 vs. Mufasa" war ruining my enjoyment for the movie itself? I wouldn't blame Japan for that in the first place.
Thanks alot for causing me to take a indefinite hiatus from the Sonic franchise, ya jerks lmao.
@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002if you let that "ruin your enjoyment" then I don't think you should be a fan anyways.
As a Godzilla fan the community is Hell, but I don't let that ruin it for me. I only focus on what matters that being official media.
@XaviHaunts
Just for the record, your delusional-ness.
I am a Sonic fan, I'm just sick of these mainstream validation beggars ruining my enjoyment of the Sonic movies and the Sonic franchise as a whole as they're also the reason why I'm making Sonic 3 the last time I watch Sonic movies and won't look foward to seeing Sonic 4, and I do NOT want the other Sonic fans who are again mainstream validation jerks trying to force me to watch Sonic 4 either, because I ain't gonna tolerate it anymore.
@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 ok then go, no need to lecture me or anyone else on why, never knew ya anyways.
I don't wanna hear you cry about it dude, go complain to people willing to hear you say bs, call me delusional all you want but I'm just a positive person. I am happy with what I have and I think Sonic 3 objectively is a success.
Imagine caring about what other people have to think or say anyways, you could always ignore people you know, turn off your device, go outside, do something else.
@XaviHaunts
"you could always ignore people you know, turn off your device, go outside, do something else."
Nah, gaslighting negative Sonic fans' opinions seems way more fun than all those options XD lmfao.
It aint about politics, disney practically owns the oscars. They used every loophole they could to appease disney.
So a colorful bunch isn't diverse as the orphan lion and his brother where every lion looks just about the same. Disney corruption at it's finest
We're talking of same oscars that made Frozen win over The Wind Rises of Studio ghibli?
then why you're all surprised?
i dont remember if Zootopia -which is way better than Frozen and one of the masterpieces of the modern disney- won an oscar some years later (if it did,it deserves each one of that),while that movie WON IT.
It’s cause the Oscar’s don’t like movies with heart and passion they want movies with big names and literally anything to do with Disney for no reason
I don't think Korone hates Sonic
Exactly. She's literally a Sega ambassador. The franchise just isn't as popular as here in the West.
@@CC-pg6dlIt's not as popular, because it shifted into being a Western-focused franchise, with Western writers who don't grasp Sonic's Shounen roots.
@@petergriscom3431 Yeah, that's true too. There's a reason why Frontiers did well in Japan.
(Is summoned in by Sephiroth music. Stays to listen to the video.)
Japan: Wants Sonic to be like Mario and basically just be stagnant with barely a plot
America: Wants Sonic to continue to have awesome stories like Sonic Adventure 2 (it and solo game literally biggest basis for Sonic Movie 3)
Disney: Hates it because they can't seem to even try to listen to what people want, including what they do with companies they own/control "cough" MCU/Marvel "cough"
Oscars: Hates it because it isn't a boring, pretentious wannabe artsy film about nothing or isn't part of "I support the current propaganda"
I bet WB/Discovery are not happy either lol.
Funny enough, Sonic got its best writing from Japanese writers, and its worst writing from Western writers.
There is a strong possibility that Shadow could be getting his own spin-off movie or series before Sonic 4 is what Paramount is now thinking about since fans are voicing that they want it.
This is what you get when you listen to fans… good results
I have to ask why is the internet simping for Sonic 3 especially in the west? I don't think it just about the quality of the film because based on all objective measure, Sonic 3 isn't that great, it especially not Best Picture worthy.
It's because Sonic fans are so desperate for a comeback, they'll glaze anything that's not an obvious dumpster fire as a smashing success, all in the name of chasing their "Sonic Renaissance" mirage.
me neither as a sonic fan myself im shocked at how many people love sonic movies cuz they are so bad, and sonic 3 is just mediocre at best
