The 'best' grip is going to depend on the characteristics of the blade and what you are using it for. It's the same with swords. You don't hold a rapier or foil the same way as a longsword or a katana. You don't hold a Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife or stilleto the same way as a Bowie.
Hammer grip is good for retention and for prison style stabbing. Sabre grip generally useful but not quite as good for retention. Palm up thumb and forefinger grip only for specialists using FS knives or stilletos.
You also don't always have to stab or push the blade into the opponent. You can pull them onto the blade in some circumstances.

The hammer grip and ice pick grip were my first learned techniques in the USMC. My severe arthritis has limited my wrist flexibility, therefore I like your "saber technique"

For myself, it depends also in the knife grip/hilt form. I have an all purpose kind of heavy hunting knife with a small cross guard, when handling it I prefer the hammer grip, while if using the smaller folding knifes I prefer the saber grip

Prefer the saber grip because it's easier on these aging shoulders; seems that I have a little more range of motion, especially on the slashes.
On another note, I like the Trigonalgear but, please make and offer an aluminum straight blade.
Thanks again Paul, you're a machine!

In my opinion the hammer grip is by far the best grip. It's the only one I will use, and I train to perfect it. Another great video! Thank you!!

I definitely prefer the saber grip for long to medium range knife work. In my experience, the hammer grip is most suitable for very close distance and knife work involving standing and ground grappling. Does that align with your testing?

Especially while using a commando dagger, Saber grip is hurting my thumb against the guard when thrusting and making impact. It is uncomfortable even when thumb is placed on top of guard. I prefer the foil grip with knife held horizontally in front of abdomen and thumb held on the center of guard, pointing to the tip of the blade from the flat side. Will pressure test it some more, may remove the thumb giving me trouble 😆

Will you please show your footwork? I,m moving as if I'm just punching. Is that a bad idea? I feel balanced, I just don't know if my footwork being incorrect will throw off my target distance, or anything like thaf.

I like the sabre grip more. I feel I have a better flexibility and good blade control. I would slash the opponents wrist first, or hit the knife holding hand hard to disarm as I come down with my blade' and then swing up to slash the face for better distraction. So down to the wrist or the hand (with the knife) then from there up to the face. Both moves for slashing intentions not thrusting. I could thrust to the face since my hand would be in a upper position after slashing the face.

Is the saber grip safe to use with a knife that has a good size cross guard? Such as holding the thumb down behind the guard. Or will this result in jamming the thumb when performing a stab into anything substantial?

Saber grip not as secure as the modified Saber with more thumb support, but Saber more flexible.
