- Happy Birthday to Chuck Panozza who was born on this date in 1948. This song was in the lead from the start, but the race tightened near the end against "Too Much Time On My Hands". I was rooting for "Rockin' the Paradise".
'Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)' by Styx off of their "Pieces of Eight" album which came out in 1978 and features Chuck Panozza on bass.
Man, this video is an old one!
- I've seen Styx a few times and thought they were really good.
- When I was young and just starting to play, Chuck Panozzo was the butt of many bass player's jokes, but I came to realize that he was an extremely competent player and played bass-lines that faithfully served the songs he was playing. A great example of a "less is more" style.
- I saw Tommy Shaw open for Rush on the Hold Your Fire tour and, though I hate so say it, he sounded better than Rush did.
- I also saw Tommy Shaw with Damn Yankees, which was also a good show. "High Enough" is a great song!
- It's a shame they can't put their differences aside and do one last tour with Dennis DeYoung. That would be something. From what I've read, the Styx guys are pretty petty.
- Today, as part of my belated birthday celebration, we are going to see "The Outsiders" on Broadway. A matinee, of course.
- We've had our eyes out for a show to see, but nothing really appealed to us. A month or so ago, Lynn and I happened to hear a song being performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show. I'm not sure how that happened because I'm not a fan of Kelly Clarkson's. There's something about her that just rubs me the wrong way and anyone who overuses "Y'all" as much as she does gets automatic demerits from me. Anyway, the song was incredible, Lynn and I both really liked it. When we learned it was from "The Outsiders" we decided to buy tickets.
- Gotta hit the shower and hit the road. Hope you have a great day!
Wicked job Troy. Styx is one of may favourite bands. Chuck and John inspired me a lot.
Thanks Corey!
The following story is True AND Tragic all in one night! Back in the day when I was a Senior in High School here in Columbus, Ohio....an amusement themed park up in Erie, Ohio had a tradition of opening their Park up early for one night only called "Senior Day and Night" before their official summer season started. This was for Seniors graduating from High Schools who participated in some program for the State Of Ohio in Education. I did not know or care about the "program"...I was just thrilled to be going with my buddies! The best part was a small band called "Styx" was going to be entertainment for the gig! This was 1975 and although this Band was not yet nationally known, I had heard of them! As a beginning Bass Player, ANY Live Show was a treat for me! BUTT...as a young buck who partied like my plane was going down at any moment, I smoked pot and drank so many "Little Kings" cream ale that come time for the show, me and my crew were passed out on the lawn over looking the stage. THAT is the "tragic" part of the story.🤣 Saw them in later years a few times and best know I was completely sober so I'd at least get my monies worth! 😂 Always a blast to read your writings Troy and I can attest to seeing a Band out do my RUSH on a particular night as well and it was Thin Lizzy in 1976 with The Late Great Phil Lynott as they TORE the house down. Even Geddy said nice things about them during a spot in-between one of their own sets too! I'm STILL dying at reading about Miss Kelly's "Ya 'All"😅😅😅 She does say that way too much! Being "Cutesy" with her audience only goes so far! Hope you and your Lynn enjoyed "The Outsiders" show! MOO From COW-lumbus......um....is the Carrot Cake all gone? 😉
Sorry you missed them! It wasn't so much that Tommy Shaw outperformed Rush, but his mix was much, much better. "The Outsiders" was great - everything a Broadway show should be. I'd say it's on par with Hadestown and Hamilton. The carrot cake is just a memory now.
Always enjoyed this song! Have to say I think my personal favorite Styx tune is Snowblind from Paradise Theater. I can't describe why but it just really stands out for me...grabbed me from the first time I heard it!
Fantastic cover Troy...awesome tone! Enjoy the show!
Awesome! I'll check out "Snowblind", it's not ringing any bells.
Thank you very much... the show was fantastic!
@@TJH3113 glad you enjoyed it and I hope you like the tune!
Can you do some Alice cooper covers? No specific requests. But I’d enjoy a few songs.
I'll look into it. I was thinking about Billion Dollar Babies a while back, but those picked down-slides would be tough to mimic.
Awesome playing and awesome tone on that bass
Thanks so much!
I believe Tommy Shaw sounding better then rush lol even today he sounds so good. Glenn Hughes is another that just sounds absolutely insane and then also plays some mean basslines along with it. Love the vid Troy!
Glenn Hughs is insanely awesome these days. 5 decades later and the dude is still a monster singer and bassist.
I should have clarified that he had a much better mix than Rush did. Tommy sounded so great that I couldn't wait for Rush to come on, but they were way too loud and boomy... and the mix was a mess.
Great as usual, Troy!
Thanks so much!
Awesome! I think they could of had a few more great albums if Dennis De Young hadn't gone all Mr Roboto lmao!! Then again of it hadn't have happened we might not have gotten Damn Yankees 👍👍👍
Thanks Nicci! They made such a big stink over Mr. Roboto, yet they still play it live and it's one of the more popular songs in their set.
@@TJH3113 Rock stars lmao!!!
Chuck panozzo is the no flash. Just plays whats best for the song. Great job as always. On a side note Styx still sound amazing live. Tommy shaw is a robot.
Before reading your comment I went back and added a few words that echo exactly what you have said here. Yup, they are still rocking and Chuck still comes out for a few songs every show. Tommy's voice is still mint! James Young is creepy though.
I know this is a simple song for bass, but as always, Troy, I love your nuance and inflection such as up and down slides, string pulls, harder and softer attack, and such. Well done!
If it's one thing I know now that I didn't when I was younger, it's that a bass line doesn't need to be difficult to be great. Thanks so much... take care!
pretty much as you said. It serves the song perfectly. Basic but powerful. great use of approach notes and walk downs. For me this is the ultimate Styx song. I got to see the Paradise Theater Tour. It is a shame that of all the 70s/80s bands that are still capable that these guys couldn't get it together. Styx isn't Styx without Dennis DeYoung's voice. Happy Birthday Troy!
Yeah, I'd say that this is a great example of Styx at their best. The guy they got to replace DeYoung is really good, but DeYoung wants to do one last tour with the original guys and they are resistant to the idea. Bad move on their part, I think. Thanks Andrew... take care!
Excellent cover Troy. Thank you.
Thank you kindly!
The incredible rhythm section of John and Chuck Panazzo that is greatly underrated
Truth
Well, happy BELATED birthday! Enjoy the show!
Thank you. The show was great and we had a really nice day!
Chuck crafted some great grooves.
Truth!
I saw Styx around 95 or 97 at the Mann in Philadelphia. Benatar was the opener, and my sister was a huge Pat B. fan. I wasn't expecting much from these two "old bands" but agreed to go along for fun. I was thoroughly impressed by the show Styx put on. At the time it was the reunited classic lineup with DeYoung singing. They rocked.
Wow, very cool! I saw Pat Benatar around 8 years ago, but she suffered from a horrible mix. You couldn't hear her voice. People were shouting to her, "We can't hear you Pat!" and she got into a dialogue with the FOH guy over the microphone, but it never got any better.
Good stuff! I always made room for 70's Styx material and even some of 'Paradise Theatre'. Castle Walls was one of my favorites. Its definitely doesn't showcase the bass, but I like the atmosphere.
Thanks!
I voted for paradise, but gotta say, I love Tommy's songwriting. No bad options. 'Is it any wonder?'
I'll get the other two up at some point. Haha!!
I've met Todd Sucherman (drummer though not on this track). Hell of a drummer and an equally nice and funny dude.
Very cool! I know a fellow who has gone to a number of his drum clinics and takes a personal lesson from him when he comes through town.
thank god for the nineties real rock . never a styx fan. great job as usual
I thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Y'all did a great job on that song! 😉
Thanks y'all!
Nice Troy!
Thanks Joe!
Used to play this one back in the day
Very cool!
Awesome job, as always 🎉
Thanks again!
YES!!!!
Thanks!!!!
I did vote for rockin the Paradise, it seems like there's some tricky spots in it but this song is cool
Yeah, that unison scale is tough than it sounds. I'll upload it at some point.
I've got the same bass except mine has a white pick guard and the fret markers are different. I custom ordered it because I wanted the maple fret board.
Very cool!
I worked at Thames Valley Steele in New London CT when Tommy Shaw wrote this song in 1978 and it was the national anthem for all hard-working Blue-Collar men all over the USA. This song went ballistic! Record sales must have gone through the roof back then....
Ironically, the song is actually mocking the blue collar man and his perpetual work prison.
@@scooterrockets7815 You might be right about that but it was never received in that light. At leaset not where I lived....
I used to pick up lumber down State Pier Rd, but it looks completely different now on Google Maps. I read up on Tommy Shaw's inspiration for the song and he said it was about a friend of his who got laid off from his job at the railroad and his difficult time dealing with not being able to work. I don't think there was any sort of mocking going on in the song.
Love it! Just love the hard drivin' feel of the drums and bass for this one. And the energy coming out of the break and back into the chorus. Probably my favorite Styx song, among many. I love the ride cymbal during the chorus.
Awesome! I'm really glad you liked it.
mexican geddy lee jazz?
