Cool that the older hard shells form a protective cover, mound to protect the younger soft shells... Brilliant self-defense mechanism! "A living Citadel" of survival in the wild. TY @BBC
Pushing the young crabs to dive down appears to increase survival. For some reason, in nature, the harder and stronger crabs try to stand on top of the younger crabs. This seems to me to be a suicidal act that is completely illogical. In the long run, however, the species of crabs that burrow under young crabs may have reduced their numbers.
I am blown away by how effective that ray's mouth is at extracting all the meat from a crab so quickly!! What the heck kind of inner workings are going on inside that mouth?!
I love spider crabs too, they just look so alien with their legs and body shape, I love their armor and how they eat and act. Weird its my favorite animal but I love them. Specifically the Japanese spider crabs with their incredibly long legs.
@@ghostlyblue5735 I had one as a pet. Her name was Karkinos I had her since she was a speck it was from a seaweed experiment I had her 2 years before she died I regret not releaseing her any crabs I usually had as soon as I could see them I took them back to the ocean. It REALLY hurt my heart cause she’d make these kinda idk purring noises or more like at first it sounded like something was cranking idk how to describe it. I think she wanted her own kind but she’d molt right out in the open . If I had seen THIS before I would of contacted a local diving place to take her back for me cause he literally video taped a molting spot. I think maybe she’d been ok. Idk they can live like 20 years so yea I wish I let her go. I mean her tank was cycled it was big I planned on getting bigger it was just hers and a stone crab. I would suggest just watching stuff like this. It’s been over a year and it still hearts my heart when I see molts or dead spider crabs at the beach. I still have her molts. I thought I’d have her forever. But I mean high site she should been in the ocean finding a mate.
@@ASurfgirl I'd keep those molts forever, they really are fascinating creatures. The name reminds me of ARK survival evolved, sounds nice. Have you had any other pets?
The larger the crab pile, the smaller its surface area relative to its volume. In other words, the number of crabs attacked by rays decreases as shown in the logarithmic graph. An amazing survival strategy.

Video so clever it is worth watching and contemplating. How did they achieve the spy spider crab? Camera lens is shown in a couple of frames but no clue if they somehow installed it in a living crab or did they build a drone crab? Either way the movement accuracy and picture quality are outstanding.
Can you hear the stories they will tell about that crazy crab who battled the Ray? Legendary🤯
