Also he is a really nice guy to deal with. When I purchased Serum I had some issues with Paypal and I had to email for help. I didn't realise it at the time but I ended up speaking to him one late night (I'm talking late, would have been past midnight). Initially with the issues I had I almost changed my mind about going through with it, but after helped me out I ended up doing it. And boy was I glad I did. Serum is an incredible piece of software. Maxiumum respect to Steve.

Maybe those preset designers deserve more than credit… Not paying your sound designers? Damn, gotta have a giant brain to come up with an idea like that.

I was just thinking, "wow she's doing an incredible interview!" And when I went to look up who she is...
"Marijke is a Senior User Experience Designer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. On-lab her projects include designing augmented reality tools for spacecraft engineering and Mars exploration, and designing processes and software to support spacecraft operations for the Europa Clipper mission; a spacecraft set to arrive at the Jovian moon in 2025." 0:41 - how did someone from a music background become a self-taught software developer?
    3:39 - where do I start?
4:32 - Andrew Simper an important mentor to Duda
5:44 - reverse-engineering something that exists is a great place to begin, but how did you choose to create something new?
9:27 - how did the development of Serum start?
    17:38 - collaborating with Lance
21:50 - who is on your team of collaborators?
23:45 - what tools are you using? And what is your development process like?
24:29 - do you use Jira?
25:24 - do you start with creating a general architecture when you start building something? Feature specific?
26:15 - are you using any frameworks or libraries?
28:14 - are there other lessons learned for people who are interested in starting a development project?
31:13 - before opening up for questions, are there any announcements for whats next?
    32:24 - feature creep
33:10 - yes this is why Ableton is the best DAW
33:51 - question 1: how do you know when to dive deeper to educate yourself vs. outsourcing it to somebody?
37:56 - question 2: where do you see music software going in the future?

@@EvaLasta I didn't go to school to learn how to make synths, and an education doesn't mean 'nothing at all'. I'm not trying to put people down who didn't go to school, but saying that it is meaningless shows you have no idea what you are talking about. It might have less importance in this specific niche, but it's still a big consideration for most jobs in tech as a whole.

Hey stevo, talked on email a few times before. Saw this yesterday and was in the shower today drawing out an equation for a bit reduction effect in C style pseudocode in the steam on the shower door. Haven't looked it up or asked chatgpt, etcetera yet, but it seems as though that is actually done with a modulo, NOT "division". What I wrote on the shower door for turning 2 decimal place float into a single decimal place float was something like: `sample=sample-(sample%0.1)`. To do bit reduction so that only ints remained, the same equation with %1 works. Of course simply doing an (int)sample would also do that. Anyway, I didn't scroll back through the video to confirm didn't say modulo. I'm thankfully preparing to launch a touchscreen synth product, so I have been in embedded C DSP mode sometimes recently and thus don't worry, I'm not a "script kiddie" and serum is still a nice vst.

“Meta music...”. YES! I had a few chats with software / hardware inventors and asked them how does it feel when you know that you have your hands closer to the core of creativity, since it’s by using your tools that other musicians make their music, and so there are many people who must feel somehow at their mercy and the presence of their tools, and existing under a shadow that they cast. That’s definitely an incentive to step up and claim innovating and inventing these tools as your main ambition, since there’s no better way to have such an influence. And not just that, but when you do it right, so so many other musicians will want to use what you’ve created, and maybe this creation would inspire a person to be a musician all because they like your tools of creation. That’s a huge compliment, and I’m sure there’s other rewards as well when you are making the top tier VSTs and plug-ins. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS GREAT TALK!

What a good interview. I've never even heard of him before. I feel like I learned so much in one hour than probably some months of my life. Ha ha.

I never tried Serum and havent bothered looking it up to make the connection to Steve til now. Trent said he spent way too much time in Reaktor making shit so guess thats why he got Steve later on. I also need to go back and sample Marijke's laugh and make it as my notification sound on my phone 🥰

Love how at the beginning it started out with he wasn’t good at it at all. And he was like I wasnt good at it I just didn’t even know what I was doing I just didn’t give up.
