Basically the only thing I need in ZV-2 compared to regular ZV-1 (not this one) is USB-C instead of Micro USB. Wider lens would be great as well, something like at least 18 to 70. Dream lens would be something like 15-100, even though I believe it does not exist or at least not as compact or cheap.
I started using this to vlog at Disney World and love it! So easy to use and quality looks so much better than my iphone, I can totally tell a difference. And the I love the width of the lens! Plus it's so much lighter than my sony a7iv with the sony 20mm f1.8 ;)
I currently use the Sony ZV-E10, basically the ZV-1 with a removable lens for more flexibility. No record limit unlike my Canon T7I which makes it perfect for my use case which is a glorified webcam in a light controlled room
If this is the only usecase, maybe look into 2nd hand full frame DSLR's. Something like a Nikon D800. For shooting stars, you want the bigger sensor to capture as much light as possible. At the same time, you don't need features like quick auto focus of burst shooting - things that new camera's are very good at. So you will be totally happy with some older high end gear.
I use a d5500 but anything newer than a d3200 is ideal. I used to have a 3200 which had terrible noise. On ebay you can get 5500s or 5200s for under 500 dollars and the added advantage to nikon is the lenses have used the same f mount for 50 years alot of them are manual focus but for astro stuff you leave the focus at infinity.
Great video, thanks. I have the ZV-1 and I am not a professional and I hardly vlog either but I tend to wanna have a phone only. I hardly ever take the Sony ZV-1 out of my bag. No advice needed, I'd thought I'd share ;)
The image of Brandon walking around vlogging into two cameras is super funny to me. It's some like off brand 2022 future distopia hellscape for powerusers. The camera itself might be cool. I'm turning into a cheap phone kinda guy, so I'm never really counting on having a great camera from that. I wish the price point was a little lower for me to get into it, but maybe I can pick up a used one in a couple years.
This camera is very overpriced,,,, Check out reviews of cheap cameras on youtube and, y'know, if the video output looks good for a few hundred then consider it.
Sony makes great entry level cameras. I'm still using a NEX-5 with a Minolta MD adapter ring for vintage lenses, which are fairly cheap to come by and make as great pictures as new ones.
Given that you have such a strong opinion about the micro-HDMI, it would be great to have a video on what that is all about, it's uses, what it should be replaced with, etc....
They have already briefly and indirectly explained it. If you go look at the main LTT channel, there's a video about repairing the micro HDMI port on a Sony A7S II (which broke just from normal use).
My question is, what's the best budget camera to buy for someone who doesn't really know photography? Assuming a standalone device and not a cell phone :)
look back at the sony nex series. the nex 3n is perfect enough for photography, but for video you may want something like the nex6. I own both of these and a few in between like the 5n and they're amazing. I also own a a5100 and love it. the nexs are older but great.
Go second hand, 10-12 years old full frame DSLR and good glass, If you are really get into photography in 3 years time then sell that lot for around 80% of its value now, if not then keep it.
Camera shops and Ebay are full of secondhand Nikon cameras in whatever size/type you might want to try. Obviously they're not the latest and greatest but for $200-ish you can get a really good camera. If the pictures look like arse it certainly won't be the camera's fault.
Just want to comment that short circuit is much more informative when the speaker actually does some homework so he knows what he's talking about instead of blabbering about a product he has no slightest idea about. This video deserves a like
Great quick look - but the tripod mount comments are a bit weird, as the previous mount clearly wasn't centred either. It was just offset to the other side.
It's actually genuinely impressive how great smartphone video is. I definitely want a camera, but I want 4k60. And if not for video, but I keep using my phone, I definitely want one for stills
In terms of image quality i would agree, but this seems to market more towards people with limited knowledge who just want something "easy". And the older alpha series definitely are not.
I know this is a vlog camera. But I hope there will be a new wave of compact camera's for still shooting with 1" or bigger sensors and good lenses. Right now, Sony is basically the only manufacturer that brings out new compact camera's. I really hope Panasonic will introduce a new line. I picked up a Lumix TZ200 this summer for traveling, I think introduced 4 years back, and it was so much fun shooting with, and such a breeze to not have to carry big gear while still be able to get good results. I still think there is a market here.
I would have liked to have seen more footage without the skin softening, I know you guys realized after shooting a lot of shots but as someone (of many) who hates skin softening, I don't have much to go off for what it would look like without the feature enabled.
How do you stop the focus hunting on the camera? Its enough to give someone a headache. The ZV-1f doesn't do it as bas as the ZV-E10 but it does do it.
I agree. I kind of get tired of watching product demos of devices that most of us can't really afford. They're great and all, but I'd rather a review of a device that I might actually be able to purchase and use. I'm seeing a lot of this lately on tech channels. These ridiculously priced products that most of us will NEVER have.
@@marvintpandroid2213 a FF DSLR is not a compact vlogging-camera. This is not supposed to be a pro-camera, it's a small, inexpensive video camera for filming yourself with a few more buttons than a phone.
@@techcommentlooker3951 in the 'vlogging' walk comparison the skin softening was enabled on the sony. They filmed this before finding this out I guess. Not a fair comparison. This function seems to seems to saturate and blur the skin based on contrast recognition. The bokeh is another function (product feature or sumth). Anyway, the sony footage looks way more processed in these shots, throwing away valuable pixels, sharpness, definition and range. Unfair comparison.
It depends on what you are doing with photography but if you are getting into portraiture then consider getting a 10ish year old Full Frame DSLR and a good lens or two and learn to use them.
Nice overview! The background flicker/jitter between the light and dark part of the studio window demonstrates the biggest downside of this camera. Hopefully the version 2 of this camera will have a phase detect sensor and lens stabilization. Had a lot of potential, but I wouldn't recommend it over a phone. 😥
To each their own, but I had the ZV-1 and as someone who normally shoots with a A6500 and 7D - I hated it. The thing felt like a toy and the lens was so restrictive. Replaced it with a ZV-E10 the second they (finally) arrived back in stock. On the plus side I sold it for $100 more than I paid for it after just a few days on Craigslist.
zve10 has worse stabilization and rolling shutter, not suitable for walking vlogs. also with any lens get too bulky and likely to be left at home. whilst zv1 can easily fit in a pocket and be sent everywhere.
The reason the focus jumped at 5:00 wasn't the camera struggling, it was actually focusing on the reflection of itself in the glass of the iPhone's rear camera.
If you place producing quality content above optimizing watch times, a price point or price range, for whichever country (pick one, US or Canada would be most logical), should always be the first info we get when possible (If the price isn't available yet, just say that). Mentioning the price but not giving it is just adding insult to injury. Please start saving our time.
Contrast based autofocus is a dealbreaker. It is not 2014 anymore, come on, Sony! UPD. Lol, the amount of fanboys high in copium in the comments... Apple has phase detection autofocus(PDAF) since iPhone 6. It is not like the greatest and latest technology anymore, so $430 iPhone SE has PDAF (Apple calls it "focus pixels"). It costs nothing to Apple to put PDAF even in their budget phones, same applies to Sony, since they're clearly recycling same sensor again and again. Spending $500 on a dedicated videocamera in 2022, which does not have basic functionality available even in budget phones = wasting your money. UPD2. In 2019 DJI brought phase detect autofocus to their $350 Osmo Pocket by firmware update. Sensor already had necessary subpixels for phase detect, just firmware was not ready for release date. ZV-1F has same sensor from RX100m5-m7 and ZV-1, which has subpixels for phase detect. But Sony clearly removed PDAF from ZV-1F for the sake of market segmentation. UPD3. Changed 2016 to 2014, since it is the last time Sony released camera with contrast based autofocus - RX100M3.
It is still a goof af imo still better than any af from nikon fuji Panasonic and olympus Sony is literally known for autofocus they will not release this if it suck
Panasonic depth by defocus is really good, you can make contrast af really good, it's smooth and accurate, just not as fast as phase. For video IMO good contrast af is better than phase.

before the pandemic I bought a sigma fp which can do that too. I was then surprised that it was one of the few cameras which had USB Video. I thought that this was given with modern mirrorless cameras.
If it can't beat your phone camera outright, I don't see why you should get this camera, regardless of its advantages over a phone camera. Better to save a bit more for APSC (or even full frame) mirrorless and go for a setup that can beat a phone camera in every way.
2:26 OMG, That have USB C they could do the HDMI on same port + PD but no, the switch was too expensive or board space? Oh, that point for tripod is nice because you have better balance using the side display.
Idk where you got "20mm" from, it's not a full frame sensor, it clearly says 7.6mm f/2 on the lens. Can we please mention "20mm equivalent" and not skimp on the "equivalent" bit. So many people nowadays confused on what the millimetres actually mean. Or better yet just mention the angle of view.
Great video. Thanks!! I only do talking head videos (podcast or tutorials) so I'm wondering it this the right camera for that. Seems this one is really purpose built for vlogging. However, the price is very attractive ... I hate to have to spend the extra $$$ to get the ZV-e10, but its seems I might have to.
I have the canon M50 Mark i, been using it for 2 years I think. it a bit more expensive but looks much better, maybe less features also. like bad auto focus at 4k
I shoot sony full frame so I'm not in the market for this camera but I love watching brandons camera reviews and hopefully he gets to keep making them!
You could see the camera actively trying to blur the background as Brandon was walking around and recording. At that point, just don't turn it on lol Let it record naturally and you can blur in post processing. Nice if you're live streaming, but if it can't live stream, then I don't see the point in the camera actively wasting battery and processing on trying to blur the background. That's the one place I feel phone software still beats camera software, save for Leica: better natural bokeh effect. Maybe it's hardware, but I tend to think it's software just because Leica does such a great job at it.
Honetly, the iPhone looked much better in the vlogging test. Not sure if "smooth skin" was on in that test as well, but the Sony was massively lacking detail in comparison to the iPhone.
Would've liked to see the use of it as a webcam using the HDMI output with something like a Camlink to see what kind of quality you could get from it that way. However, for the price not so sure about it being used just for that. Could probably still be better off with a used a5100 or something. Looks like it's releasing at a $500 price tag. However, as a vlog and general camera you would use for all kinds of other use cases that price for what you get quality and features wise is pretty compelling.
That mic thing being plastic worries me more since it feels like its fur would dettach and create more microplastics. Maybe it doesnt and theres no worries at ll
The iPhone absolutely destroys this in quality. The audio is a little better on the Sony, but the camera is day and night better on the iPhone. Now imagine comparing it to the main back camera and not the front facing one?
You are not using product showcase feature as intended when you put an object in front of your face (covering your face) it will focus the object, as any other camera but this feature allows you to put the object on frame while your face is next to it and it will focus the product, not your face.
eh! both those tripod mounts were off center. every camera should have the tripod mount in the lense mount center, not the camera center so you don't get weird angle changes when you change the camera angel. the new mount is just as offset as the previous version from lens center, just on the other side
I'm thinking of picking up a dedicated camera to record my workouts other than my phone, and this or a GoPro are coming to mind. Mostly because my home gym is very small and getting my entire self in frame on my Pixel is a little difficult sometimes.
Brandon camera reviews are great, and while I also dislike micro HDMI, I find mini HDMI even worse. One thing I would really appreciate in reviews is what the HDMI out capabilities are, clean live out?

Usb c
Full sized. It's too weak and breaks all the time, quite easily.
@@TalesOfWar Too large. Not comparable. USB-C works great.
@@joshuaeah it already comes with usb C right? So what's the problem?
My question is, what's the best budget camera to buy for someone who doesn't really know photography? Assuming a standalone device and not a cell phone :)
look back at the sony nex series. the nex 3n is perfect enough for photography, but for video you may want something like the nex6. I own both of these and a few in between like the 5n and they're amazing. I also own a a5100 and love it. the nexs are older but great.
Just buy an apcs from canon or sony both have the best autofocus just point it and shoot
One of those disposable ones you get developed at Walgreens.
For a front facing camera....the iPhone does a brilliant job in comparison tbh.

For the price you could get a used a6300 or new a6000 which in most cases would be much better options
Can you do a comparison against the iPhone 14 Pro main rear camera please.
Love this affordable tech content :)
I agree. I kind of get tired of watching product demos of devices that most of us can't really afford. They're great and all, but I'd rather a review of a device that I might actually be able to purchase and use. I'm seeing a lot of this lately on tech channels. These ridiculously priced products that most of us will NEVER have.
affordable?

omg in the comparison the mic difference is so much better on the camera
You mean Output with HDMI mini and for USB-C connector?
Minor nitpick; the older ZV-1 didn't have the mount fully centered either. The newer camera just decoupled the mounting point and the battery door.
The answer is a used A6000 …
Yep or any Full Frame DSLR and good glass.
@@marvintpandroid2213 a FF DSLR is not a compact vlogging-camera. This is not supposed to be a pro-camera, it's a small, inexpensive video camera for filming yourself with a few more buttons than a phone.

Lens are so expensive!!🔥
the quality of the mic is excellent.
Personal opinion: the iPhone color and contrast feels more natural, while the Sony feels more cinematic
If by "cinematic" you mean over-saturated and blurry, you'd be correct
Not an opinion-- this is measurable
@@ocelotxp when you say blurry you mean bokeh? Color they can change up during editing, dunno if they changed how much if any of it here though.
I think that was bc of the face softening thing that was turned on by default on the camera
This is not a photography camera, it's a little vlogger for casuals
@@chrisogrady28 Exactly, but in relation to the question asked then my opinion stands, but everyone should make up their own minds.
I love cameras, among a lot of things. Thank you
That thing about the tripod mount is pretty valuable info to someone who is more novice.
I still use the canon m50 for all my videos, battery life isn’t great, but the focus is super quick
The reason the focus jumped at 5:00 wasn't the camera struggling, it was actually focusing on the reflection of itself in the glass of the iPhone's rear camera.
Nd filter would help in a well lit room and probably better through hdmi over usb c .
I just recently a digital 2001 camera, I'll use it instead :)
Thanks! I might need to give another camera recommendation!
I was told the Sony ZV1F only live streams at 720? Please let me know how I can get 1080P or higher with this camera or another for live streaming
Just got this and don't know how to use this bad boy. Like, at all. Can you please do a tutorial on how to set this up, for newbies?
Please test camera performance in low light settings! Most people are recording in bedrooms/offices without studio lights.
If it's a deal breaker you're not the target for this camera.
It is still a goof af imo still better than any af from nikon fuji Panasonic and olympus
Sony is literally known for autofocus they will not release this if it suck
Panasonic depth by defocus is really good, you can make contrast af really good, it's smooth and accurate, just not as fast as phase. For video IMO good contrast af is better than phase.
Then go for the expensive camera wtf you complain that much for a budget price of this camera. People like you wanted a budget camera with the features of the expensive one 🙄
@@MonicaHolly143 as someone who has almost exclusively used nikon cameras (though I'm nowhere near a pro, more of a weak amateur), if the autofocus in better or it than on the nikons, then it'll be way more than good enough
I think i will still prefer iphone 15 nonpro version then this as you get the power of chip crispy clear photos n videos autofocus along with the comfort & portability of mobile, though its small camera the battery isn't good to outlast more and misses most of decent camera features , instead i will go with the iphone or if needed camera like a6400 or zv e10 with multiple switch lenses, the budget as it claims its indeed not.
2:40 You would think modern technology has come far enough that they can use the USB-C port to output a video signal?
before the pandemic I bought a sigma fp which can do that too. I was then surprised that it was one of the few cameras which had USB Video. I thought that this was given with modern mirrorless cameras.
If it can't beat your phone camera outright, I don't see why you should get this camera, regardless of its advantages over a phone camera. Better to save a bit more for APSC (or even full frame) mirrorless and go for a setup that can beat a phone camera in every way.
can you use the zoom when using the livestream??
how about connecting it with the HDMI??
How do you record your videos and get that crisp picture? Apologies if you already have a video out on it, i'd love to watch it.
i thought it looked good until i saw the ip14 front facing camera. i'd go iphone all day long. great review!
That is actually pretty good, both in terms of video and audio quality . . .
For the ZV-1F, would I need a dummy battery for longer livestreams?
I have the canon M50 Mark i, been using it for 2 years I think. it a bit more expensive but looks much better, maybe less features also. like bad auto focus at 4k
The studio audio honestly sounded great.
I shoot sony full frame so I'm not in the market for this camera but I love watching brandons camera reviews and hopefully he gets to keep making them!
Was price ever mentioned?
Great product. And sound is great , both inside and outside. I like it.
Can’t get enough Brandon camera reviews. Thank you for this one 🙏
How do u connect it to use as a webcam?
Do you still need a camlink?
The Title is misleading , but the video is excellent.
"Stop using your iPhone!"
*sees it's contrast based AF from the dinosaur age*
No, I don't think I will.
Honetly, the iPhone looked much better in the vlogging test. Not sure if "smooth skin" was on in that test as well, but the Sony was massively lacking detail in comparison to the iPhone.
8:29 holy macaroni Batman! That's some spicy eyebrow sharpening on the iPhone!
Please review the Sony FX-30 Brandon!
This looks awesome! I am actually looking for a nice entry level camera to try and get into Videography as a hobby! Keep them coming!
I have no idea why they wouldn't just make the door on the side so you could easily remove the battery/SD without making the mount off center....
Audio is great!
Would this be a good cheap option for recording shows in a small pub?
That mic thing being plastic worries me more since it feels like its fur would dettach and create more microplastics. Maybe it doesnt and theres no worries at ll
The iPhone absolutely destroys this in quality. The audio is a little better on the Sony, but the camera is day and night better on the iPhone. Now imagine comparing it to the main back camera and not the front facing one?
Is it not possible to take still photos with this camera? Only VLOG? Would be nice with photos in a camera review as well :P
Yay! Brandon on Cameras! My favorite!
Can you change settings manually on the camera while using for live streaming?
Are you guys going to look at the new GoPro 11s ? I'm curious what you think of them.
You are not using product showcase feature as intended
when you put an object in front of your face (covering your face) it will focus the object, as any other camera
but this feature allows you to put the object on frame while your face is next to it and it will focus the product, not your face.
Can you use a rode mic or DJI wireless mic
The old Panasonic DMC-TZ5 had the mounting point way way off to the side.
eh! both those tripod mounts were off center. every camera should have the tripod mount in the lense mount center, not the camera center so you don't get weird angle changes when you change the camera angel. the new mount is just as offset as the previous version from lens center, just on the other side
If you have the display flipped out the tripod mount feels a bit more centered. Kinda?
And what's the price?
I'm thinking of picking up a dedicated camera to record my workouts other than my phone, and this or a GoPro are coming to mind. Mostly because my home gym is very small and getting my entire self in frame on my Pixel is a little difficult sometimes.
Brandon camera reviews are great, and while I also dislike micro HDMI, I find mini HDMI even worse.
One thing I would really appreciate in reviews is what the HDMI out capabilities are, clean live out?
Could this be a replacement/upgrade for a webcam streaming setup?
Oops sorry I just got to the part of the video that mentions the webcam feature lol I'll still leave my comment up for the algorithm.
Those cameras only need a flash to be perfect, i have an RX100M2 and i love it.
