- I decluttered my apartment again. What, where & why in the name of minimalism. I share what I’ve decluttered these past seven month since I played the minimalism game. Why I decided to get rid of the items, where they went when they left my apartment and if I replaced them.

Finally someone who gets my deep hatred of selling stuff for 5-10-20$ and sometimes even a bit more. I'm not rich but I have better stuff to do with my time than running after money. Plus, when I donate to the local charity shop, it provides work for their employees who are reintegrating into society / the work force, and it gives money to that same charity to help people in needs. I always see it as : they need that 5-10-20$ more than I do! ♥

I like it too - but always recommend reading 'Letter from Sweden...' by Susan Sontag. Sweden's view of itself is very much determined its own view.. and a viewpoint of moral superiority and national self image. Ps. Sweden incinerates most of its rubbish which is why it can import more rubbish.

I find it almost insane that someone would leaves comments talking about how you're not sustainable enough. You're not bare bones minimalist, but you're really, really minimalist still. Chill people lol 🤣

Only their kind of "opinion" is actually just criticism, negative and subjective. So no, they are not "entitled" to crap all over someone. If you stick to objective posts, then carry on, otherwise, keep it to yourself. There are enough toxic people to fill the quota.
Instead of regular declutters I've started keeping a giveaway box that I drop things in as I come across them until it's full. Then I drop it off at the facility on my next errand day. It keeps the decluttering constant but zero effort. I love it.
Great idea! I have a paper bag in the hallway where I also drop what I declutter normally and then just take out when it’s filling up. Saved all this in my basement for the sake of the video as I was finding it and did the last bit before shooting.
I love how efficient your country is in regards to recycling and using trash as energy. The USA could learn something new in that area, and try to implement some of those ideas in a more efficient way.

The recycling programs in the states is inefficient and non-existent is most of the country. I wish we had the same type of refuse/recycling system that Sweden has.
I live in a town that has no recycling what so ever.

When we sold our home, I found out that I could leave items at the curb and they would be gone by morning. Some items were picked up by neighbors. Other items were picked up by strangers. Either way, someone got use out of them and they did not go straight to the landfill.
I completely agree with donating rather than holding, listing, attempts to sell and the inevitable haggling. Just not effective use of our time. 🎯❤️🙌
Waiting for someone to come who doesn’t is the most frustrating thing in my mind.
For me as a Uni student its actually a good way to get some spare money but I totally get it, that its Not for everyone :)

the hazardous trash recycling is fabulous! We need those here in the U.K. too.
I love the easy access to it! It’s a three minute walk from where I work at Södermalm.
I love our recycling depot in the next village,they have a place for hazardous items,I also found stuff there,plant troughs for my garden,in the uk,but it's Scotland,great systems here.
Right? Our UK recycling policies can do so much better!

The amount you declutter, vs the sheer volume most people lose track of, and do not recycle, are worlds apart! Keep doing you, love your channel. I found you probably 15years ago via your blog. I was devastated when you stopped blogging (although I understand totally). When I found this channel about a year ago I was ecstatic! Thank you for sharing!

My mother taught me the same lesson - don't buy a set. As such, I've always purchased individual items and separates - pots/pans, clothing, makeup and hair brushes, etc. Open stock is the way to go. I also learned to buy several pairs of socks in the same color (I limit myself to white, grey and black) so when they're washed, pairing them up is not time consuming.
Wish we had such smart recycling here in U.S. I am so glad someone else agrees about donating as opposed to wasting time haggling for small sums. And thanks for shots of that beautiful cat. 😻

I absolutely love the idea of the recycling room and the building’s own library also the automated hazardous recycling is super futuristic. Swedish society is so forward thinking!

I love that it is so easy to recycle hazardous waste in Sweden. In parts of the US, we have specific days and events where we can bring paints, medications, electronics, etc. However, they tend to be once a year (maybe twice), so you are forced to store the stuff for a year -- or find a center and then pay a ridiculous sum to recycle.
Where I live in the midwest, we have no-cost recycling centers open once a week BUT they are only open during the week when many people are working - granted not such an issue now with Covid and so many working from home but in the past I literally had to take time off work to recycle old electronics. No doubt, many wouldn't bother and would just throw things in the regular trash...
I’m lucky to have this in the city but when I lived in the suburbs it was more difficult. You basically need a car to get to those places but they are open all week though.
Every time I watch one of your videos, I fall asleep at night dreaming that I can replicate your apartment. It just seems like a very peaceful and calm place to be with very few display items to distract one's attention. There's a purity in your videos in terms of what we see but also in terms of your intentions. I never feel that you are trying to sell us something. Bravo and carry on.

Wish we had more of that here in the US. We are a very wasteful country and not good at recycling. I grew up on a farm and learned many ways to reuse items but sadly like you rugs they do wear out and have to go. Thanks for sharing.

The comments you refer to must be from others who have not followed you or from the USA. I live in USA and we are a most wasteful and consumer driven country unlike more mindful countries. The USA does not have great recycle facilities in many states unfortunately. Always love seeing Mini and Bonus!

My husband visited Sweden for work many years ago and the company he was visiting was a match making company. He was fascinated that the bark that was stripped from the trees was used in a furnace that gave everyone in the village hot water and heating. Ireland had yet to start recycling at that time!
Hopefully other countries are taking at least some notes!

I don't know why many Swedes seem to have a sort of moral superiority complex about how things are done in Sweden even though it is the exact same in many other countries - another example would be 'free health care'... well, most countries in europe have that...
For anyone in the U.S.A., you *need* to watch her video on recycling in her country, Sweden, as it is incredible! I thought having lived in Korea that they recycled a lot (hello food waste recycling!!!!) but Sweden is on a whole other level. It is amazing! And that recycling at the 12 minute mark is just wow! I truly wish recycling was taken seriously here in the U.S.A. Many cities, however, are having to cut their recycling programs, as the money for it is too much...which just doesn't make any sense. Our recycling doesn't even take glass anymore, and I purposefully bought products in glass (over plastic) so it could be recycled easier. Sooo frustrating! Thank you for sharing, Benita!! As more cities moved towards mixed recycling bins, away from the old glass/plastic/paper separation, they had to stop allowing glass. The bottles were often broken in the mix creating a hazard. :(

@@lhst9129 ha, yes like a typical american, I forget to mention I am in us. I think us is using it as an excuse to not have to recycle another thing because we are sadly behind much of the world in regards to recycling our own goods but consume so much.

With you on the donating and not selling, I take my things to the charity shop, they sell the things and make money for the charity all good
Depending on the item, I often take gently loved but unwanted items to a local consignment shop. The owner knows what will sell and got how much. She keeps a running tab of my sales, takes a percentage and sends me the rest. A nice surprise in my mailbox!
I love the hazardous recycling system. This would be such a great system for Australia, a country that is obsessed with DIY. It would be a great idea to install such a unit in neighbourhoods for domestic households to safely get rid of paint, oils, etc

street. There are a large group of
darling university students living
in a Hippy type large house just
up the road from my apartment.
They seem to be happy to get the
stuff. Have often seen one of them
wearing one of my hand me downs.

Do Sweden and Switzerland handle all their own recycling? UK and US were selling to China and are having so many issues now.

@@lhst9129 Whoa that's crazy. I looked up what was being done there. I had no idea. I feel like they don't exactly advertise this in America, but I still feel silly for not knowing about that. Just kind of amazing. Incinerate your trash and end up with like 40% lower greenhouse gas. Just crazy awesome!
@@BB-wl8qr Yes :) Sadly, incineration still produces a lot of greenhouse gases and is not ideal...but better apparently than keeping a landfill, recycling and winning energy from that currently is as good as it gets.. i would say...
I loved reading the comments on your last videos, of some Americans who clearly have no idea that recycling in other countries is just that much better! I am in Canada but have been so in love with Sweden especially since I was a teen. Everything just makes so much more sense. Love this video as always.

I just furnished my new bedroom with new and charity shop finds. I'll pass on furniture and clothes I don't need or use anymore. And I love your videos ☺️
Yes, there are quite a few stages in life where you have very different needs for sure!
@@BenitaLarsson maternity and childhood is a big one. All the furniture, clothes and toys from that period were passed on. We have neighbourhood "library house" (they look like bigger birdhouses) and I leave there old books and boardgames

Some of the things that you decluttered I would have kept; actually, I keep. I have repaired my 10 years old umbrella twice, my iron is 23 years old, the microfiber cloth is quite used but still functional. It is great to have pristine hardware and clothes, but I do not think I would replace some of these things with new ones just because they are old, specially if they still work.

I agree with you about donating things, rather than selling them. I've struggled with trying to sell items, especially those in really good condition, but now I realise the stress from keeping so much stuff, is not doing anything for my well-being, plus charities are benefitting by donating.

Decluttering and donating items is liberating. Considering the source, material composition, and need for an item, prior to purchasing, prevents clutter. Living in a clean, clutter-free home enhances my creativity and productivity. Cats, though, are one of my luxuries. Your videos are inspiring.

When I was a kid, I was definitely a consumerist maximalist, so I understand where you come from about having a lot of things to get rid of when you down sized. Now, as a teenager, I’m very much a minimalist and not at all a consumerist!! My style has really done a full 180 and now I’m as climate conscious as I can be :) Minimalism has done so much for my anxiety and overall happiness and I 100% recommend anyone thinking of doing it to take the plunge! Minimalism just makes my life so simple, and (,,granted it has been easier for me because I’m still young,,) it was very easy to actually become a minimalist! I’ve been on my journey for a little over 1 year now, and it keeps getting better.
Anyway, I only recently found your channel (from NTS’s Small Living series), and I love it so much! It just keeps inspiring me (and your videos are v good for my anxiety) as a young and relatively new minimalist. Tysm! :)

Great video. I offer items in good shape items to niece or friends, then drop rest off at one of the donation stores. Recycle as much as I can (have to take to one privately owned center in town). My city offers a free hazardous waste drop off at recycling center once a month. Then the rest goes into the trash bin. It isn’t worth the physical space the item is taking up in my small apartment nor my time to worry about trying to sell an item here or an item there for a few dollars. The key for people is a different mindset on possessions and what we really need to be happy and stop buying stuff. I might be getting rid of a lot in the short term but keeping what I use or just really like and being intentional about what comes into my space
Decluttering and Recycling is a continues process, but a neccesity to keep ones home minimilistic and beautiful like in this video always clutter will build up in some form or another although one doesn't add to things and you will find stuff does seem to appear from nowhere but things like shoes do get worn so one is constantly having a turnout.....endless task!!!

I fell off my minimalist wagon during these 6 mths of intense pandamic issues...but a few wks ago I got back on track and just this weekend I decluttered and yesterday rehomed it all...feeling light & free once again 💙

I wish we had here In the USA all the great sources to recycle. Although I drop my things off at the Salvation Army or the Good Will store, some part of me does not like the fact that they profit from things that are being donated. I do also like to share my things with family and friend and neighbors first before donating them.

This is the first time watching one of your videos, and admittedly I have had a couple of glasses of wine. But when you showed a number of your items going to the recycling room, and then you showed a clip of your cat, I thought “No, don’t take that beautiful cat to the recycling room!” I quickly realised that is not your intention 😅
Anyway, this was very enlightening. Yet again, Sweden (and Scandinavia in general) display how intelligent and sustainable they are in terms of strategies they have developed to minimise waste and utilise resources. The rest of the world (and I live in a relatively sustainable, liberal country) has much to learn

That’s so amazing that Sweden sorts out the trash!!! That makes decluttering much easier and guilt free. Sadly the US is very far behind in sustainability. It’s so hard to find places to recycle certain items. I donate items in good condition, but for those that are worn out, I feel guilty throwing it away because I know it’ll end up in a landfill. I end up holding onto items I wouldn’t otherwise.
I'm still rewatching your videos today and have to say Sweden's recycling program is amazing. Canada could learn alot. I noticed in another video that you can recycle snack packages. We can't do that here and even some plastics aren't accepted. I take my stuff to charity shops. I alternate between the different shops. I don't have the patience to sell things online and much prefer giving to charity. We also have donation drives for the homeless shelters. I'm still working on decluttering. I'm getting much better at making quick decisions and parting with things. I just want to see bare floors. I envy you your bare floors lol.

We used to have "the mall" at our recycling center. People would bring furniture,books,sports equipment. It was great! Some people are not comfortable with selling so this was a way someone could make money off of your old stuff. Very popular. Hope it comes back after Covid relaxes it's grip.

I wish I could live in Sweden after seeing this video. I live in Romania where recycling is just starting out and most of the population is just too lazy to do it. I try really hard to do everything possible to reuse what I can, to gift what can be gifted and to only buy what is absolutely necesary, but recycling is really frustrating when you see the dump truck picking up everything you meticulously sorted into categories and just jumbling them all up again in one go... I still do it because I want to have the habit already in place when we eventually do get functional recycling infrastructure, but it honestly makes me so sad that sooooo much stuff ends up in the dump...

I was going to say that I love my Amope (battery operated foot file) but I can see that if you prefer filing in the shower, that option doesn't work. I actually switched from filing in the shower with a foot file, I just don't have the time in there to do it, to the dry filing whenever I do have time. Sometimes we acquire then rid ourselves of things when we are trying to figure out what a good match for us will be.
I wish our recycling and disposal was as efficient as it seems it is in Sweden.
Yes, optimizing what you use where is a good thing!
Tip: You can clean mascara brushes and donate them to be repurposed by wildlife rehabilitators to groom, clean and treat wild animals through the non-profit, Wands for Wildlife (or someplace similar where you're located).

Living in Oslo we have the same recycling scheme, makes it so much easier to be mindful when discarding and decluttering things. I love the hand-over room too, we have it both on kindergardens and schools, as well as the nearby community area. Left so much there and found some new treasures too. Totally agree regarding selling stuff. With two small kids there's so much that need constant replacement as they grow. I sell some things that are valuable, but for everything else I just donate to hand-me-down rooms. It takes too much time already to be on top of kids things.
