  • Join Justin for an hour of his life of roughing out opal on his lapidary machine. Exposing the color and bringing a gem to life is his passion. Opal cutting has been a 30 yr long journey or understanding opal and how it cuts best. No music just the sound of the grinding machine and water. No talking either.
    Thanks for watching :)

Just remember guys Justin is like the rest of us a human, don't hurt his feelings unintentionally..he regularly says his favorite thing in the world is peace and quite to cut opal while he jams to music alone..dont take this away from him! Don't complain about asmr videos or he may not keep sharing his knowledge and time with us. If he can't do what makes him happy on his channel, then why have a channel?! He will see his analytics from youtube and see not all his fans watched this one (and some have watched it multiple times) he doesn't need to hear your words about not liking this type of video..hes not here for views, hes here to try and pass his knowledge about his talent along to future generations! :) didn't yalls mama ever teach you if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!?! Im sure no one means any disrespect, but just remember texts can be interpreted in many ways and only the author truly knows what they mean..how many times yall been offended by a text message you misinterpreted?! Just some food for thought

I cut my first parcel over the weekend!
6 rubs, two of which were duds.
    That's Opal four you.
The other four cleaned up nicely.
All cut and polished by hand; 180, 220, 400 sandpaper and 1200 grit diamond whet-stone did the trick. All with water.
Polished using 2500 grit paper over a soft leather pad. Dry.
Popsicle sticks make great disposable dops!
    Used Superglue, had no wax.
Nail polish remover softens Superglue, easy removal.
I had a glimpse of 'script pattern' (pulse racing!) in one piece that turned out to be overlapping chaff!
Now I gotta wait for my Bank Account to heal up...
    I want more rocks!
I've cut many many cabochons from black Obsidian; Opal cuts the same, but is not as brittle as volcanic glass.

Did ya ever stop for a moment and think about how justin feels? Hes no different than the rest of us and gets tired of repeating himself week in and week out just to have people not listen..hes not here to show off his fabulous gems, he gets more than enough attention from that..I'm pretty sure he made this channel to make himself happy and what makes him happy is the opportunity to hopfully pass on his knowledge of his craft, as he has said many times before. Those of us who truly wish to learn from this master craftsman will know how to appreciate videos like this, as we can literally hear his words from past "lessons" in our heads, as the same methods are commonly used to cut most stones, and its not boring either because you get to madlib his witty banter for yourself!

@@HellBent069 Please stop speaking for, and embarrassing Justine with your melodramas. You are totally clueless as to why Justin posts videos, or his feelings. Please stop pretending that you know what he is thinking, that is insulting. Generally, you seem to be talking about yourself, and projecting your feelings, as if they were Justin's. I feel confident, that Justin appreciates constructive criticism, just like most "adults" do. When fans take the time to make suggestions, or give constructive critics; ... they often receive a like with a heart from Justin.

I think this is possibly my favourite of your videos because it showed how you dealt with a whole range of rough. Some of the rough was much closer to what I purchase and attempt to cut than your usual nobby's, which are, I imagine, well out of my price range. I did miss the commentary but the information I gained from just watching how you tackled this parcel was priceless, and so it more than made up for the silence. As a visual learner, I send a huge thankyou to you for making this video, it was, to say the least, educational! Loved the gems you cut and as always it was a pleasure to watch a master cutter at work, now I am inspired to go cut a parcel I recently purchased, smaller and less promising than yours but still my most ambitious so far.

Thanks to you Justin, i recently bought some rough opal from Australia. I think i got an epic deal. A guy with a huge gem and stone collection was travelling through town so i dropped in.
Long story short, i got a bunch of white seam opal, and a few pieces of crystal for a song and a dance. Every piece i picked out has red on green play of color. Guy said it was a decades old parcel. I'd love to get your opinion on them. Thinking about making a short video to get some feedback. I would have never known what to look for if it wasn't for you. That was fun. I'd love to see a video of the finished stones, with weights and prices on each.

Would enjoy a follow up episode on these stones. Just your thoughts on the batch etc. Well done!

Show how quickly Justin can work each gem with out having to talk to us.
    Though still prefer your commentary.
    Thanks for the different perspective.😊

My lapidary club...O.L.M.C. in Ottawa Canada is closed until next year. It is enjoyable to just see and hear you grind. In the zone with the stone.

The stone at 52:09 shows a spectacular purple-wow-color. I wonder why you put it back down instead of in your hand in the end.

The convex 49:40 was amazing, as was the pink/purple/yellow long rectangle 51:18 and the free-form 51:40. But I just love 50:02 and 52:15.

Bought my first auction opals...nervous. Tried to nab some semi black opal parcels but ended up enjoying watching the other three duke it out at the end.
