i can't believe how many people don't realize that you're not going to be able to tell the difference when the audio is compressed for a youtube video. anyone who hears the audio on this video and forms an opinion on the quality of stradivarius violins one way or another is an idiot.
I just don't like the music she choose to play, or maybe her technique was too terrible. It hurting my ears, really. I have heard many people play the Stradivarius and this is the worst violinist. I feel ashamed for the Stradivarius
The condenser mics they use in studios today just don't capture the fullness of things or even the air of the room the way the old RCA ribbon mics did back in the 30s through early 60s. I owned an RCA BK-11 for a while. All you needed was one on each end of a soundstage to pick up _everything_. Listen to Heifetz in the old movies and he sounds great even through the hiss.
The second she said it was in new condition I knew it wasn't going to be everything it can. The Lady Blunt will have this problem once someone finally starts to play it. It's very obvious right from the beginning that it needs to open up. I'm glad someone will play it daily but we may not hear it's potential for a long time.
Actual double blind studies have shown that there is no subjective difference between Strads by different makers, including Strads made by Strad! Even top violinists can't, if the source of the music is concealed by a curtain (acoustically transparent), determine if the music they're hearing is from a Strad made by Stradivari, or one made by a modern maker. Further, even the people PLAYING them couldn't tell, when blindfolded, if they were playing a Stradivarius original or not. It's all hype. But I feel no compassion to someone who shells out 3.5 million for a fiddle and 200k for a bow.

The person playing the violins is playing his own. He knows which is the strad. Only one person is playing (the strad's owner) so the sample could not be smaller. In the double blind studies, nobody knows which is the strad. The players are blindfolded. The players are screened from the audience, so the audience can't see who or what is playing. The playing is done in different venues on different days. There are multiple players. Now THAT is a "study". The strads we see today look "new" because they have been re-varnished and maintained. Almost none of the original varnish remains on any strad being played today, which was one of the factors that ruled out "secret varnish recipes" as a contributor to the strad's sound. Antonio had excellent tonewoods available to him. Carpathian maples, the finest spruce. He had meticulous craftsmen and craftsmanship in his shop. His violins were prized in their day, and were played often and well maintained (mostly). Dinged or scratches have no effect on the sound of the violin. How the violin is handled (thus, dings and scratches) has no correlation to its construction quality. I have just finished making my first violin. Took me two years, as it was a hobby project. I learned a lot in that process. There are a lot of shiny violins on the market with no corner blocks in them.

My vintage Knilling 10KF violin sounds exactly like her Strad, well maybe a little warmer in tone. I changed my strings to real gut and used a slightly thicker sound post and moved it closer to the bridge. And of course, it had a lot to do with talent.

Clarke Alonzi Stradivarius was a pioneer of the modern violin - most violins now are "Stradivarius copies" so the instruments he made then wouldn't be different to what you can buy from violin makers now
People are stupid to buy for the "sound". Every study has shown that professionals can't tell the difference between stradivarius violin and others. In one study the lowest rated was a stradivarius and the highest was a 1980ish out of 6 violins.

A person's vibrato is one of the very very few options that are not regimented on paper and allow for a very small amount of liberty in playing a piece. Some people, in fact most older generation professional music authorities are appalled at the level of personal liberty that is taken in applying the personality and emotion of the player into the piece and forming that with the intention of the music writer. I on the other hand appreciate hearing the integration of the regimentation of the writer and the personality of the player into the final product that we hear.

Why Gershwin on a Stradivari? It's almost a dishonor to the instrument. I want to hear that on clarinet, not on this wondrous instrument! Not to downplay the mighty Gershwin at all, or the Clarinet (My principal instrument), I would just like to hear some period appropriate music such as Vivaldi on this particular Violin.

I think she likes it, but she ain't quite got the blues! Now, if we could resurrect Stephane Grappelli and give him a Strad... Love to hear Meyers play Bach, though.
I am really disappointed, just throw me the sound without any descriptions about neither Anne Akiko Meyers nor Stradivarius, I would think of a violin student plays on his cheap one.
