Notes from UpTheAlbion on the sessions (slightly updated in parts):
Legs 11 [The Libertines]
In 2001, The Libertines manager Banny Poostchi wanted the band to make a compilation of the best demos that they had recorded to date. Carl Barat compiled the demos and the name Legs XI was chosen by Pootschi, as the cover featured the crossed legs of ballerina Darcey Bussell, the “most famous legs in England.”
Legs XI sounds much different from any of The Libertines’ released material. Bassist John Hassall sings on Sister Sister in this session, a song that he would go on to release many years later with his new band, Yeti. The track Music When the Lights Go Out also features the former Libertines cellist Vicky Chapman.
Although it was never officially released on a label, Legs XI has since been made available for fans to download for free on the Internet, originally via the now closed www.thelibertin.... During the 2020 lockdowns the band released these same tracks on their official RUclips channel.
The 77 Demos [The Libertines]
The 77 demos are a set of 5 demo tracks recorded by The Libertines . The story behind how they got their name was posted by “NLP200” on TheLibertines.org.uk forums. “NLP200” was the one who purchased the demos from eBay and leaked them online;
“Ohh sht i’m really sorry about this, i’ve havn’t been reading up on the demos I put out a few months ago. I didn’t realise the track tag would come up as well. You are all going to really hate me now, here’s the explanation. I named the demos “the 77 demos” it has nothing to do with the libertines at all (feeling really stupid now) I named them the 77 demos because that is how much I payed for them originally- £77 I just named it that when I burned them onto my pc as a quick reference. I’ve just looked at someother posts and AlbionArks!!!!! (Oh Sht) and realised they are calling them the 77 demos. Again I am sooooooooooooooo sorry I was so misleading. The demo I bought was a five track CD from the studio (or so claimed) It had the following track listing 1. Tell The King (b-side demo) 2. Death On The Stairs (new recording unreleased) 3. Smashing (obviouly unreleased) 4. Sally Brown (b-side demo) 5. 7 Deadly Sins (b-side demo). When i bought the cd it claimed that all 5 tracks had never been released so you can imagine my nervous feeling when I sat down to listen and realised that I already owned the first song gulp this left me thinking that I would have heard them all and the smashing demo was just the rough session version and that I had just payed 77 quid for nothing. You can then imagine it got even worse when listening to the DOTS demo (if you listen to the begining it is almost exactly the same as the start up to the b-side demo version, but luckily it wasn’t and then imagine the utter joy when those first blissful riffs from the excellent smashing echoed from my speakers. The B-side demo versions sound exactly the same but just a little less polished. Anyway again I'm so sorry for being an utter twat by not realising that the tag would have transferred over, please except my apologies and i hope you all enjoyed the demos. thanks”
The demo session is still nicknamed the “77 demos” today.
Odessa Studio Recordings [The Libertines]
The Odessa Studio Recordings are two sets of demos (indicated by a “1” or a “2” on the tracklist, below) recorded by The Libertines; the first two that the band ever recorded. These two sets of demos, along with the EMI studio demos, make up most of compilation album, Legs XI.
Out of the 12 recorded tracks, only two have not been heard by fans; Men in White Coats and TAG. A short acoustic version of Men in White Coats is available to download on the internet; however no known versions of TAG exist.
In July 2006, there was an interview in the NME in which Paul Dufour (The drummer with The Libertines at the time of recording the Odessa Studio Recordings) said that he would release some old Libertines demos that may include the tracks from these recordings, however, only a small bit of content has appeared via thearcadiandre....
This stuff should be worth a fortune...The Libs were a great band. Far far better than their low-record sales may suggest... Yeah I know, it's not 'all about' record sales, but I guess that's easy for me to say. I'm not relying on royalties / ticket sales to pay the bills... I feel sorry for Pete, I really believe he was truly devastated and hurt by the lack of recognition the British masses gave him and The Libertines... The British media tore Pete to absolute pieces, with their childish spite and outrageous hypocrisy... The likes of Keith Richards, Keith Moon, and Noel Gallagher, these boys were practically lauded for their drug use. We all know that Noel Gallagher got a fucking invite to 10 Downing Street after admitting to taking drugs, saying they were as normal as 'having a cup of tea',... and it's all ''Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll''... well, it is until somebody actually takes fucking drugs, then, well, then I guess it all depends on whether the media like 'you' or not... If they like you, then they'll help you sell millions, if not, they'll stick the knives in, and you'll struggle like The Libertines did... Apologies for going on, I'm just angry because the British media mocked and ridiculed Pete, on what seemed like a daily basis, and in doing so, managed to convince millions of British people, that Pete Doherty was just a 'junkie' with dirty fingers, when really Pete Doherty was, and still is, an excellent lyricist and songwriter... The end.
Someone should start a newspaper that targets the journalists and paparazzi that harass and make shit up about people. We can film and report on their downward spiral as we make them grow in paranoia of everything. The Libertines and Babyshambles are fucking amazing...from California.
i wouldn't feel to sorry, him and carl got half a mil each for playing BST hyde park this year.
Half? that's it? That's not too bad.
Great songs, excellent lyricists, love the libertines and babyshambles..
+JustAnUsername No, it was pretty bad. His counselor said Pete was one of his worst cases and that it's lucky he's still alive. But it doesn't matter how bad Pete's addiction was; he just shouldn't have been treated the way he was by the media. Addiction is a disease and addicts should be helped, not shamed.
I'm seeing a lot of praise for the demo of You're My Waterloo, and rightly so! But that demo version of Bucket Shop is just wonderful, so soulful yet rock n roll at the same time. Good upload this one .. Long live Peter Doherty.
This version of Bucket Shop is really the best, and maybe the only one that I have heard so well recorded? Wish they would play it live
@@MagnificientMusic Bucket Shop was released on Anthems For Doomed Youth back in 2015 if I'm not mistaken, and it's more ''polished''. It lost the groovy vibe the demo had but still a good tune nonetheless.
@@43forlife Yes you are right, and I agree, this is version feels better. It's probably the energy they had back then which fits the song very well. I feel the same way about "Lust of the Libertines" which they also released on Anthems For Doomed Youth. Like Pete says at the beginning "still a good tune"!
@@MagnificientMusic I think it's the way Peter used to sing in the early days of The Libertines, and somehow I like how the demo is mixed even more than the released, not to mention that the drums on the demo are played by Paul Dufour which added more soul the demo. Gary has his own stlye too but you can clearly hear the difference. It's been nice talking to you mate! Honestly :)
@@43forlife Nice talking to you too man :) I always loved those early Libertines days, the music is very romantic, even though I also love when they went more raw and energetic later on. Happy to be able to share this passion with someone else :)
Peter sounds vaguely Bowie-esque on this early version of "Music When The Lights Go Out"...
Thought the same
Isn’t it John singing ?
Le meilleur des libertines. La plus pure, la plus honnête et la plus baudelerienne de leur musique.
Such an priceless stuff is here, Pete is the greatest musician, my favourite, unique and extremely talented. I really love him. Seeing him and the band in Poland was one of the most wonderful moments in my life. ( I've been talking with John and Carl in Gdańsk as well😊😊😊) it's wonderful that Pete got dso many loyal fans. There is the only one band which matters.
Yeah it brings me back to London when I was 20s
I've got a massive crush on Carl Barat lol 😂. Watched them yesterday in Norwich, was awesome
Great songwriting, they had such brilliant chemistry
Amo a los Libertinos y siempre sera así.
This is definitely the best part of RUclips ❤️
Still
It's a very good part yes
These are just pieces of music history . Thank ya so much fella.
The best part is that they haven't forgot about these songs. Somne of their newest Setlist includes them
a very beatle like photo at the beginning I think. I love the vocals in music when the lights go out, very different. if you are looking for new music try searching
The Stumble and Shake - Oh my darling, oh my dear (Earthquake Version)
you may be in for a surprise!
"....they would if they could, but they cant..." well done peter for sticking it out. they cant take the Pete out of peter. the strength of a human soul eh?
I've always loved this version of You're My Waterloo
Brilliant. All the good tunes off their later albums are actually the ones that were written a million years ago.
this is one of the most tender song written by pete
i love the demo for bucket shop
Oh god Carl with this suit
Peter just sounds like peter...the genius...
Thank u so much for posting this 🌸
These sound great, hooray for the 21st century is amazing
Whoa, these are all incredible
vodka, tapentadol and libertines, thats the way to start the day
This is the best thing i've heard in a long long time!!!
early libertines sounds like....the young bowie ! ;-))))
***** they remind me of the kinks too!
this is gold shit,an love listening 2 this....cant wait 2c them june, dublin.they kick ass....
Firstly like to add this is absolutely wonderful and thanks for posting.
This version of the Waterloo is awesome!
Much better than the album version. The album version is lacking .. soul?
@@Victor-dt1uq the album version is alright, they should have redone it with pete on the acoustic and carl on his les paul, instead of piano
Yeah I can't believe they ruined it, this version was perfect. Didn't need slowing down into some piano ballad. It's like they tried to inject some epic emotion into it by making it big piano ballad, but actually removed all the charm
smashing- i cry evry time
oh darling please forgive me
songs in this list are really great!!
so moving
the guitars are tight as fuck on these recordings, very different than they're releases. lovin this but the mishaps on the albums make it more natural
It's so beautiful:'(
Love is on the dole is so fucking good
Só tops👍♥️
Tracklist in video description folks. Pay the Lady 30:09

wow thx dude- that side is amizin!
Nice!
i really like/prefer this version of breck road lover to the one released for their 20th anniversary, although both are pretty damn good. peter is soo good at portraying (wrong word?) emotions through song.
Top
I told u get some weed n brownies then put this in the silent night 😇
Please, Come back to Thailand again...please 🙏🙏🙏
so much other stuff still
This is three times better than Anthems for the Doomed Youth
+Okko Kooks anthems for the doomed youth is a good album, but this is a commercial album (made to be sold) this ne is more a record for friends and fan
Good point. I wrote this comment with a rage but after listening to it for the second time, I think there are some good tracks in it. But it still doesn't sound like old Libertines.
You don't really have a clue about music do you? Calling your stupidity a rage doesn't hid your ignorant and it doesn't help that your comments come across as if a 7 year old had penned them!
okey ""Dave Rave"
G O L D
bowie n'est pas loin
joyaaaaaaaaa
These are the demo versions
I saw you writing "de nada" in other video. Are you Brazilian?
Sim
+juan ocarroll Muito bom saber que esse material raro foi disponibilizado por um brasileiro! Muito obrigado! No mês passado, estive em Viena só para assistir ao show da banda. Um showzaço, diga-se de passagem! Coloquei alguns vídeos que gravei do show no meu canal.
you do know "de nada" is also your welcome in spanish
No, I'm Irish!

Breck Road lover is so like Suede circa 1997
Eldel67 "You call that fuckin' music!?" :p
Supreme Cretin Irrelevant comment
+Eldel67 I know a girl, shewalks the asphalt world

+Florentin Rekier Pete Doherty looks like Maisie Williams

Does somebody knows who sings on this track ? I don't recognize Pete voice
@W 9797 For example in "you're m'y Waterloo" it's not Pete who sings isn't it ?
@@fab9641 It is Pete. He was just trying out a different style.
