    The FT-817 was launched around the very end of 2000 / beginning of 2001. The price was nearer to £800 than £650 when launched. I still have my original FT817 with a February 2001 date code and it's still fully functional.

      Hi Colin, I must admit I'm pretty sure we were selling them for under £700 but we're not known to stick to RRP's at the best of times. It also underlines just how competitive prices are these days, too. Hope you enjoyed the video , 73 de G4HKS

    Let’s hope the discontinuing of the 818 and ftm 400 is giving yaesu the ability to produce a super fantastic radio that will revolutionize the amateur world

    I don't want an SDR in the field nor a fancy display. I want a low-power sturdy rig. I can't believe there isn't more demand for something like this. Many the QRP RUclipsrs use and love the 818.

    Thanks, good sirs. The CS-818 I ordered from you shipped over to the States for my FT-818 arrived today after being held up in customs for a week. I imagine it took them a bit to sort out what it was. No worries though, it arrived in splendid condition. Cheers.

    And the moment the announcement was made I managed to snag one of these for $650. I wanted to wait a season since i had just bought a IC-705, but I bit the bullet. Its not nearly as feature packed as the 705 but it feels more durable and it handles SSB and CW like a charm so I look forward to taking it into the field once my filter comes in.

    I'm glad I got my 817 in 2017 and with £45 off because they knew the 818 was coming out.
    The 817 does everything I want, a great radio. I got it for portable as my h/b rig is much too big for a motorbike, only been out twice though.
    Tuners? I was given a supposedly non working MFJ160-10, but no problem with it until 2 years later it didn't work. Inside I found a wire only just touching the coil and soldered it. Okay now. Or I use a roller coaster and 500pF variable cap.

    Yaesu really needs to make a 10/20 watt version of the FT-818 to compete with the Icom 705. Yeah, I know people will say FT-991A, but that's much bigger and 100 watts and over $1000 and doesn't have batteries.

    Funny that from all of my rigs my 817ND is the one I always end up grabbing and using when out walking etc. Lots of 2m SSB fun!Let's see what Yaesu will come up with to replace this mighty mouse of a shack-in-a-box.

    Northfield Ave. in London? Walking from the tube station it was on the left, going towards West Ealing. If yes, then I remember it well. Bought my 1st PMR radios by ALAN.

    Hi good to know some are still available, can I ask what's the difference between ND and non-ND versions of the FT-818?

    • @Martin_Lynch
      @Martin_Lynch  Год назад +1

      The Yaesu 818 was only available as FT-818ND.
      The 817 was initially available as just 817 and then updated to the 817ND.

    Is it wise picking up a product that has stopped it's production based on parts issues, with parts issues likely then flow on effecting any repairs? It's already a parts affected product? Or do you not see that as an issue? If so, are you able to explain why it would not be a problem?
    Always seems to be an issue when an item reaches end of life....Parts for repairs.

    • @Martin_Lynch
      @Martin_Lynch  Год назад +5

      We've nothing to hide. Parts should be available for many years - we're still fixing Yaesu kit of much older vintage with the odd brick wall when a crucial part is no longer made. It's something to possibly ponder , but considering how amazingly reliable the FT-817/8 has been in over twenty years, it hasn't deterred buyers from grabbing the last of Yaesu's brilliant and uncontested portable ham shack in your pocket. 73 de G4HKS

    • @feel.the.need.
      @feel.the.need. Год назад +3

      Spare competents and parts are readily available, Yaesu have said there's not going to be any issues with repairs or upgrades for year's to come.
      There's simply not enough to continue with production and repairs simultaneously.
      These 818s are bomb proof anyway, they'll take a lot of abuse before breaking.

    Hmm. Tuners like the LDG Z-817 have a pass-through ACC port. While it's nice the CS-818 has a nice display and some extra functions, it's going to be a pain in the b*tt to do digital modes or add an amplifier.
    So sorry to see the end of the FT-817/818 line without a successor. Hopefully Yaesu is holding their cards close to their chest.
