  • Galiwin’ku Women’s Space is the only community-led, self-determined Aboriginal domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) crisis accommodation service in North East Arnhem Land.
Established in 2012 by Yolŋu women we are passionately committed to finding solutions to the ongoing DFSV issues experienced within our community.
Through Yolŋu and Balanda (non-Yolŋu) laws, we support women, children, families, and our LGBTQIA+ community to overcome DFSV by providing a range of crisis, preventative, and early intervention support resources, and services.
We are committed to innovative ideas that will help build a stronger and safer community. We will achieve success with strong foundations, strong cultural leadership, and values-aligned sponsorship.
There is an extremely high rate of domestic, family, and sexual violence in Galiwin’ku and surrounding homelands, especially for the LGBTQ+ community. There was no safe space for the Sistagirls on the Island until Galiwinku Women Space started the Sistagirls Well-being Program in 2022.
We are now the Galiwin’ku Pride Family, encompassing our ever-expanding members questioning or identifying within the LGBTQ+ community across North East Arnhem Land.
In Feb 2023 with the support of QANTAS and Sydney World Pride, GWS sent six Sistagirls from Galiwin'ku and Gapuwiyak, East Arnhem Land to attend World Pride. This short film is a snapshot of their life-changing experience. GWS is currently hosting space for the Yolŋu Pride Family Centre to operate. Our vision is to run the centre independently in the future.
