I also have this since I was a kid (now im 23/M).
They always say "why being scared? Lightning wont hit you" and blah blah.
Like... I am afraid of the lightnings flash! And the loud thunder.
I always shut the blinds, turn on lights, and listen to music with headphones on full blast. It makes it better. But I still know that there's thunder, and the fact that there's a storm outside, makes me have panic attacks. It's better, when I'm not alone, but I'm working at home, and at daytime, I'm all alone at home...
I want to kms, as summer comes, storms will be frequent, and I don't know what to do.

There is a storm outside right now. I'm growing calmer with each lightning strike, oddly. Because I'm telling myself "This is just nature doing what it's supposed to do in order to replenish the earth. Without this, there is no life". My friend, I hope you can find peace one day and not let your fear rob you of a happy life.

@@ekoramiduk i just got a notification because of your comment. My phobia didn't fade since my comments (now im 25). When I knew a storm was coming, I went to a nearby shop and stood there inside, so I wouldn't be alone. It was a little bit better, but obviously, kinda shaming.
In august, I was at home with my family at night, and a storm came. I decided, that since I am not alone, I will not listen to music, simply play something on the PC, with no headphones.. and what happens?
2 of my 3 monitors turn off, and my router pops.. a millisecond later, huge thunder.. It literally struck a close house when I decided to face my fear.. of course, it made it worse. :D

I was scared shitless grabbing my family members legs and screamed as a kid when it was thundering. During a 2-3 year period it kinda cooled down a bit, and I just sat in my bed waiting it out, unless it was really close(lived close to a church which got struck every few years). I think I was 11 when I decided to take my bed quilt and sit in the sofa out on our terrace. That was the summer when I conquered my fear of thunder. Now I love it and always sit and listen to it, following it on a radar. But with deep respect for it.
Everyone is different, so it might not work for everyone. But if anyone has gone from complete panic to unease, it could be worth a try.

Heavy Rain bothers me. Usually during the day storms don't trouble me, but I had instances when it thundered and I couldn't sleep. I traveled to the Caribbean one day and I stood out during a storm with my friends. Since then it empowered me, and now I want to get over this. I'll try to hear it out, and not use earplugs

I had this when I was a kid and it went away when I was about 12 or 13. I used to feel like the world was going to end when I saw storm clouds coming. It was just utter dread and I had to hold it in when I was at school so I didn't get bullied for it. It just went away on its own and I don't know how or why. I really like thunderstorms now. I hope the same can happen for you too.

(Just after I pressed "Comment", I thought of something that might have led to the end of the phobia. It's probably not very helpful to anyone but I want to write it down because I've just realised it and I might literally forget it otherwise. I also used to be afraid of dogs; I got mauled by a pitbull as a baby, so that's probably why. The phobia of dogs and thunderstorms stopped at about the same age, and I just thought about what changed in my life at the time. I stopped sharing a room with my younger brother, changed from primary school to high school and ... stopped being physically abused at home, and I'm starting to suspect the latter may have been feeding my phobias.)

I have a bad fear of thunder and lightning as well. I don't live in the best spot for it either. I live in Singapore where thunderstorms happen basically everyday. I always expect it, it will be bright and sunny one second, and the sky will be completely dark one second later. There is never heavy rain without lightning here. It's been super hard, as i've lived here for 4 years and I do go to therapy for it, so i'm hoping it will get better.

i really wish that i had someone to talk to about my astraphobia. i got it one night where it was storming really bad and we had extreme winds hit my house (i’m not sure if there was a tornado, i never got a warning or a watch),, and the thunder and lightning was rumbling really loud. my house shook like crazy. he worst of the storm was over in a couple of minutes, but it has stuck with me since. now, even on sunny days my anxiety can go haywire. i wish to talk to someone else with astraphobia,, as it makes me feel a lot better knowing i’m not alone. this video was really sweet,, i liked the little clip of you just enjoying the sun after the storm.
i live in phoenix, and basically the only time we get rain is during monsoon season. i am scared during the entirety of monsoon season due to flooding & tornadoes. the likely hood of seeing any tornadoes here in AZ is very, very low but it does not stop my fear. i wish all of you with this fear to heal soon, i know how terrible it feels.

Man this phobia really took over me. Couldn’t even go outside without seeing the weather forecast. The only way that this WILL work is if you expose yourself into thunder. When I had the phobia and my parent thought me when I was young I thought it was just them trying to get me to play games and stuff with them. But it seriously works. I live in Texas so we don’t got basements, which also helps so when a harmless storm comes I don’t have any shelter. And when I do have to shelter I have everything in place. That’s the only way for it to guarantee work the phobia out, and get rid of it. I know first hand it’s annoying scary and used to give me tremors and butterflies. And because you’re a kid, it’s natural to devolop fears when you’re young. Within the first 6 months it really isn’t a fear, it’s just a scary thought. But as a kid, you should start off hanging out in storms in a big groups, then progressively start to lower the number of people until your good alone. Hopefully you overcome it.
