The catfish move from structure to structure looking for food. When river fishing, I actually place my sinker at the end of the line and the hook about two feet up on a ssix to eight inch leader. Many people believe that catfish only feed on the bottom but that is not true, They have a built in air bladder that allows them to suspend themselves at any depth with no effort what so ever.
I learn something from every video you've made. I can't tell you how many that is. Your knowledge and relaxed presence on video are a great combination.
Muddy River Catfishing ~ Kris Flores You have earned my respect as a fisherman, and also by how you treat people. It look’s like the time and effort you have invested in this business seems to be paying off. I wish you the very best as you move forward. Tight lines, and enough water to fish in! The Carpman
thanks for the compliments. You know I never really paid too much attention to the bullheads, but several people have commented on it and now that I'm taking a step back and looking at it, I could have probably had a state record on my hands. Haha oh well, the good thing is that I catch those fairly often where I go fishing. So next time I'll be ready to have it properly examined by the game and fish. That just might be my first record breaker! Thanks for watching!
I know it looks like a lot of trash and I even called it a bottle, but acually its a foam that is created when they first open the dam and allow the river to flow again. I havent been able to figure out what its made of but i've been thinking about making some kind of bait with it because the carp love it.
going fishing today got a 12 pack and some homemade catfish bait I made, going to try this out, thanks for the info! im a new fisher, this is some good info
Update, saw the parts of the river as desribed, in no time saw fish jumping, was amazed as only 100 feet away is were I used to always fish but had no luck, glad I know how to read the river a bit now.
Fellow Las Crucen and just wanted to say I appreciate your videos! I've never liked fishing the Rio Grande cause I thought the current was way too fast and didn't understand the channels and such. Going to give it another try! Great video! Keep them up!
At about 4:30 in your zoom in you showed several rotating eddies. These are a definite indication of deeper water just where you said it was. As usual, good informative video, Kris!
great tip on studying the river, I'll be heading to the Rio Grande late on this afternoon here in Eagle Pass,Tx. I'll be using your advice and maybe I can catch some good catfish. thanks, and stay blessed bro.
The river is shallow here too. Most places you can walk out and its to your knee but some holes get up to your chest and even one or two over your head.
I'm fishing the Colorado river in grand junction Colorado. It's winter now of course and the water is finally at a good clear it's due to it not raining so much but the water is around 40 degrees. Where can I find channel cats in the colder water from the banks? I've had a lot of luck at some holes in the summer/spring time but no luck with the water being so cold. I've used everything from cheese baits to punch baits to cut bait (bluegill and sucker) I'm limited to my bait being here in this small town. No live bait is allowed here in Colorado so cut bait is very scares here. What do you suggest? Deeper water? Shallows? I'm looking to land a nice one. They don't get too big here. State record is only 32lbs. Just looking for a couple 15+ pounders. Thanks in advance :)
I love you vids the spots you go remind me of home. Also you vids are more informative than most other vids i find. great job and keep up the great work homie..
The most popular catfish baits are: chicken livers, nightcrawlers, cutbait, or fresh shrimp. Try using a few of these baits and see which one works best in your area.
In the video I believe I called it a bottle, but actually it is foam. Every year when the dam is opened for the first time, the river has lots of this foamy white substance floating down it. To this day, I haven't been able to figure out what causes this. Any ideas?
I don't know if your familiar with des allemands Louisiana, but I used to catch alot of catfish through out the bayou but now I can't seem to catch any was seeing if you had any ideas and tips for me
its a foam much like suds from a bubble bath, but every time it ends up trapped, there are carp sucking on it. I have no idea why. I was thinking of adding it to a dough bait of some kind
thank you Kris I will definitely use this advice. I live in Los Lunas nm but fish down in Belen I've caught a lot of fish in calm waters also but there usually tiny babies hopefully I can catch some bigger ones now.
hey what do you think of a long bend then the river runs into the bank then the current goes on down then comes right back into that bank...then it slows down past the curve then it splits with a island in between....where do you think a guy should fish on that spot?
You make excellent fishing videos! I just started river fishing a couple of months ago. If you're ever in the Houston (Richmond) area I would love to hook up and go fishing.
if there isnt an obvious "s" pattern to the main channel is this method of locating the holes consistent regardless of blatant patterns? my home river generally speaking flows "straight" but in many areas it is obvious where the main channel is and where the slacker water starts, shallow rapids, etc. sometimes it is hard to tell because in many cases the surface can look the same.
Man that's a BIG Yellow Bullhead, or Mud Cat as some people call them. How much did that thing weigh? Not bad for a Bantam Cat.You catch big ones very often? All your fish are pretty impressive. Your video's are well edited and make me itchin to go fishin. Look forward to seeing more of your video's! Thanks!
hey Kris is it true cats hang out in the deep during the day and in the shallows early morning and at night? Going 4 channels on the snake river in Idaho
So if the are busy running back & fourth from the hole to the shallow water then why must you fish in the hole? I have hell with currents, tangling, and hangups.
I live by a river that is in a small town it has a small water fall and a dam were fish can go up instead of the water fall what's best bait for catfish
good video, love it. a suggestion: instead zoom in zoom out multiple times, you can use some image software tool to draw on the video to show people what you are talking about to aid their understanding.
Muddyriver. I see you fish down south in New Mexico. I'm from up North. I have never fished for catfish in the Rio Grande. Have you ever fished for cats in northern New Mexico or just Southern? I'm curious to fish for some cats by Espanola.
hi i moved down here from colorado and i like to fish alot and i really dont know where to fish right now cus water is so low and what are the best stops right now
Cutbait. If you have blues and Flatheds all three will eat cutbait. Skipjack is best if the river system has them, followed by shad. The fresher the better. Also where you pointed out the top of the hole there are weeds hanging in the water. I catch a lot of channel cats in the rivers up here fishing three-five feet from the bank or closer when the waters high and muddy. They are up there feeding on insects and amphibians. Though in my experiance cutbait cathes the most, and largest fish.
You have an open invitation to go Flathead fishing with us if you ever get to the York PA area. We fish on the Susquehanna river. They caught a 43 lb cat a few weeks ago. Our largest is 21 lbs but mostly in the 6 to 12 lb range. I'd enjoy having you come out with us.
When you catch a big catfish out of a particular hole, do you expect to find others or do bigger catfish tend to run off any competition within "their" hole?
I'll make a video fishing with hot dogs but it probably won't be until the spring. There really aren't any places to fish were I live during the winter. The river is shut off, there is only one small pond, and the closest lake is an hour away. I wish I lived closer to the water...
I think it depends on the time of year. if the fish are spawning they will run off any fish that gets close. But other times of the year they school together. Flathead catfish like to stay in the same few areas. If you catch that flathead a flathead of similar size will occupy the now empty space. Good question by the way!-++++
What do you think of circle current? Example... river makes a 90 degree bend, there is a side that the water circles into the bank and continues to "circle" in that area. I personally like those areas especially if there is a log or some type of structure in it. Also do you ever fish the Pecos river any? I'd like to fish with ya if ya get the chance. This Arkansas boy don't know how to fish these desert rivers!!
muddyrivercatfishing I have deer hunt this weekend but let me see what I can do. I'd love to go fishing with ya if I get the chance. I'll try to let ya know if you are serious showing me how to fish these desert cats
I have fished in ponds around here for years and had good luck but I have stared fishing in the Licking River and my problem is that everytime I cast out my bait gets washed right back to the bank with me. I see videos of all of these people with their lines out and their bait is just sitting there... What am I doing wrong?
I often use Bobbers to catch catfish. I believe that getting your bait off of the bottom really helps put the bait in a place that's easier for the fish to access it. Even if it's only a foot or so
I only use braided line. it takes some getting used to but I like it 100 times better than mono. I use a 50 to 65lb test because of the heavy cover that I normally fish in. But under average circumstances 20lb is plenty
@muddyrivercatfishing do you live in New Mexico or in El Paso? I live in El Paso and have been catching bass within the sunland park area for years but as of recent unfortunately the spots we have caught bass in have been trashed, contructed upon etc. so we have been left without these areas we cherished for years. Would you happen to know of any good bass fishing spots that still produce? Your help would be greatly appreciated. We are B.A.S.S. El Paso and u can find us on Facebook thank you.
@muddyrivercatfishing I'm a fisherman as well and can only get like 5 views on my youtube Chanel and I catch decent fish so I thought it would get more views any advice
Could you do a video with drawings that shows the current and deep spots and where the fish hold im still trying to figure this out thanks! Good Video!
Its made of dissolved organic wastes, check out a video on a protein skimmer for a saltwater fish tank. bubbles introduced to the water attract the organic waste, which in a saltwater tank is whats used to help keep the water clean.
How do you tie on your hooks? Try a snell knot. This particular knot allows the hook to easily move horizontally once a fish bites creating better hook ups.
Golden Rule: “NEVER SET A CIRCLE HOOK WITH A JERK”. Make sure the method you use to attach the bait does not cover or interfere with the “GAP”, or by blocking the “Bite/Throat” opening or tip of your hook”! You may want to consider using a different size hook to match the size, and the type of bait you are using.
For some reason I don't ever catch any fish. I fish off shore. I use variety of things from live worms to fake bait . Whats the correct way to tie a leader.. Gonna set throwlines

You are great! I'm trying to learn how to fish and your tips have given me nothing but success!!!

It’s a Riffle, Hole, and then a Run. Doug Stange talked about that on a in-fisherman episode a long time ago. But you’re right Kris!
The river is shallow here too. Most places you can walk out and its to your knee but some holes get up to your chest and even one or two over your head.
Thanks for the info. I fish a particularly chaotic part of the Dan River in VA and knowing where to target is huge.
More GREAT information! Great Videos, Man. You are really helping a lot of people. Thanks!
I do appreciate all your videos- man I learn a lot- like Your family fishing with You, take care!
Thank you for this. I started fishing the Rio Grande. Now i can read it the correct way
I'm loving the sound of the red-winged blackbirds in the background.
+Jordan Hinson thank you! They are my favorite bird. When I hear them sing it's like they are calling me to the river.
Good information and explained well. Thank you for the coaching.
Here in Las cruces NM. The water is scheduled to be opened June 1st so have the fishing rods ready!

Is the rio near fort Davis worth trying to fish? Just moved to midland and looking to make weekend trips
The most popular catfish baits are: chicken livers, nightcrawlers, cutbait, or fresh shrimp. Try using a few of these baits and see which one works best in your area.

I was fishing by the Canadian dam in oklahoma on the low side and caught a bunch of 6lb catfish should I fish in the current or the swirling pools
Gavin D which Canadian dam are you talking about. I live in the Oklahoma city area.
sean sales the Canadian river dam in oklahoma city
Gavin D where exactly are you taking about? I may just be being dense but I'm not sure where you're talking about.
Actually if 6 lb catfish excite you what would you do catching 52 lbers like I catch?

Are there catfish in muddy river in CT?
very nice video.. thank you...Bob
So do u fish the river catfish on the bottom always or can u use corks and hooks
I often use Bobbers to catch catfish. I believe that getting your bait off of the bottom really helps put the bait in a place that's easier for the fish to access it. Even if it's only a foot or so
That's good. Cuz a buddy of mine swears that by using a bobber u get tangled up in brush. Than fishing on the bottom
Ill be doing a bait video on that pretty soon!
I only use braided line. it takes some getting used to but I like it 100 times better than mono. I use a 50 to 65lb test because of the heavy cover that I normally fish in. But under average circumstances 20lb is plenty

Hi I have a really bad hookup ratio using circle hooks

spoonpluggers guide line ( fishing rivers) nice job .
yes!
Thank you for the tips.
Thanks!
what part of the river are you showing?
I live in Arkansas.Where is the best spot to fish catfish within a hydroplant with alot of current.
Good info thank you!!
interesting, so its definitely a solid material that floats then? solid enough to throw a hook thru it
looks like this is in southern NM?!
Thanks..Very good tip.. I was able to land a couple cats..
man I fished hear in new mexico for years and never catch like u do I didn't think we had fish like that hear
P.S. Thanks for watching Uncle Steve!!
what town/city is the location of the Rio grande river?
+David Muniz this part is in Las Cruces New Mexico
+muddyrivercatfishing oh ok. I thought it was in the big bend area or presidio area.
is that just north of blacks bridge
Yes, man. That's the way it works. Thanks
Great stuff
Awesome! damn informative thank you for making and the upload!
Thanks....god promises to feed the Birds, so we are his children, are we not more important, Thank you for teaching us more about Cat Fishing!
We are searching for 10-70 pound fish... Using 7'6" MH/fast, Catfish rods, with 30LB mono mainline, 80LB mono leader, and 10/0 offset circle hooks.
What river is this and where at?
+Hector Coria rio grande river in Las Cruces New Mexico
For some reason I don't ever catch any fish. I fish off shore. I use variety of things from live worms to fake bait . I also use dip bait it seems like where I fish at I never catch any fish but I always see them unless if I use a casting net but as we all know that takes the fun out of it. I was wondering if you can look on my video and give me tips
Try a new lake. Fished at one 10+ times and never caught a thing but a small trout. Found a new lake. Caught 6 in a few hours.
Weymouth title, but
good video!
