    I'm always impressed by these foreign born wrestlers who not only have the trials of wrestling but also have to conform to an entirely new language and culture being so far from home. The fact that he calls the Stablemaster's Wife Mama is so heartwarming

    Shishi has improved considerably in the past six months or so alone. He's really shown that balance and heart they spoke about, in addition to his already considerable power. I think Division 1 is well within his grasp. Very excited to see his next basho.

    Nice that you included the okamisan in the video, it gives another new perspective. I guess the people in these smaller heya might be more approachable and the atmosphere more familial than at some of the large sumo-factories.

    As a westerner that loves sumo, I naturally take interest in western looking rikishi. His build, to my eye, is nearly perfect for sumo but this little vid has given me the first glimpse at his personality and he's evidently kind and even a bit sweet. Calling his master's wife mama is most endearing. I will definitely be cheering for Shishi in September and beyond. Thanks 👍

    1:59 lol, "tanoshishi" (a mixture of happy /tanoshii/ and Shishi, his name). That's quite common with idols where they mix their names with phrases (like good job /otsukaresama/ said by someone named Rena becomes /otsukarena/). Hiro took a second to understand the pun. I wonder if Shishi is into idols for using that (which is extremely uncommon between males since it makes you look "cute"). Another is for example calling Terunofuji "Teruru" in similar fashion to Shimazaki Haruka's nickname "Paruru" (although Terunofuji himself would not call himself Teruru unless he wanted to look cute).

I was wondering if you could make a video giving information on what is exactly is going during the open practice. Clearly they are practicing, but why is the council there? What determines which rikishi participate? What are some traditions that go along with practice? I can tell that ranking still holds a lot of respect even in this setting. He has a judo background which I thought would help more with his sumo, but no so much so far, only time will tell.

      There are 44 sumo stables and only 70 wrestlers in makuuchi and jurio, therefore it is very common to have only one or even none salaried wrestlers in the stable.
      On top of my head I recall Tamawashi and Kakyruy in such situation.

    • @miguelluis483

    Sumo question here: in the practice bouts when the opponent is defeated the remaining rikishi stop Shishi all together quite loudly. I have seen similar ob the sumo tour. Why is that? Does the winning rikishi needs to be reminded that he won and needs to stop? The tempo is so slow... doesn't he notice himself? Or is this another old tradition I don't know about?

    • @angstyautist
      @angstyautist Год назад +1

      The other rikishi are asking Shishi to pick them to be his opponent in the next bout. It gets to be quite a shouting and shoving match in the stables where there are more rikishi.

    His name (Shikona, 四股名) comes from "獅子(Lion) -Shishi", but his previous Oyakata (ex 栃司, totsitsukasa) gave 1 word (司) to him, then it goes "獅司".
    These two words, "子"and"司", both of Kanji are pronounced as "shi", so 獅司 = shishi. 獅司関、頑張れ~~!🇺🇦🇺🇦
