I used to pass this airfield on the way to cadwell park in 1970s. I didn't know of it's history, but found out later. Its Lancasters were a key part of the air war, and was a pioneer in electronic countermeasures
When Ludford first opened, the aircrews nicknamed it "Mudford Magna" due to the poor drainage and unfinished status. Throughout the war, things didn't improve much, it was always a wet site.
What country was targeted by the Thor-Missiles? Germany was well invaded / subjugated by then. So was it the Soviet Union? Although my long life exposed me to constant propaganda by our Western bloc towards the Soviet Union, I don't recall even one single example of the Soviets doing anything improper to influence our opinions and views. And with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, any past geopolitical grudges should have totally evaporated. But the Western belligerence as evidenced by these Thor missile sites continued past the fall of the Iron Curtain ( well on Russia's part anyway ) and continues today - why? The fighting in Ukraine etc now gives me a new understanding and context to my memories of all this through my life. So I now regard our Western powers as the bad-actors in all this. I used to have unquestioned confidence that our causes were good - no more!
Thor missiles were removed from the U.K. (and not replaced) in 1963…..the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. As to their intentions towards others, ask Poland,Estonia,Latvia,Hungary,Yugoslavia,Czechoslovakia et al.
i played on these as a kid , my family house was just off the drone shot ahah, we found a ww2 RAF cap badge in our garden

Wow. Such little left of a former operational station.
I know it's such a shame 😮

Known to the crews stationed there, I believe, as Mudford Magna.
Thanks for the info buddy 👍
It's interesting to see the remains of the missile launch pads, as well, quite a history, from Lancaster bombers to Thor ballistic missiles.
Yes, so interesting to see the transition between the too 🤗
Are there any memorials there? Thanks for this.
I parked in the layby opposite the old airfield which is now arable farm land and couldn't see any memorial.
I believe there is a memorial in Ludford village. They hold a memorial service there every year.
