    In Da Vinci you can set the v-log curve as default on all clips. Zero hassle and if you want to change exposure in post, you can select the conversion from v-log to be added after your effects. Only downside is if you nest timelines, it will do double grading. I don't really consider it grading, more auto-convert back to standard colors but with more options for exposure correction, take back highlights etc.

  • @saucymykey7227

    I shoot mainly in V-log with my gh5s for three reasons :
    - dynamic range is way higher
    -I like to color al my clips ( but that’s a personal preference )
    - And last but not least it can give me the cleanest image in low light ( if exposed well ) cause its dual native iso is the highest among all profiles.

    I am an old film and paper photographer who has just bought a Lumix g9 to explore the capabilities of the digital medium, both motion and stills. I have a lot to catch up on but I am getting there. But from my limited experience I was already thinking along the lines of what you said in your video. It sure seems to me that Cine D gets one almost all the way there and only a few tweaks should be necessary to bring it all the way home. There are a lot of channels on youtube that seem determined to make things far more complicated than is necessary, so it was nice to see you bring some clarity to the subject. In the old days I remember lots of photographers were wasting a lot of time and money playing around with film and tweaking the chemicals and exposures. Rarely, did these photographers go out and get really good work done because their energy was already spent before they took any real pictures. I still think that it's good to be interested in the process, but there are limits.

      @@AfoteyAnnum How do you expose V-Log on low light to get least amount of noise? I have GH5 and so far been using natural profile 10 bit with tweaks in profile settings. I'm starting a project, where I could spend more time on grading and want to shoot it in V-Log. I'm just afraid my shadows will be full of uckly noise. There is going to be a lot of dark scenes and available light...

    • @joyoffilming9500
      @joyoffilming9500 2 года назад

      I fully agree: If shooting in 10 bit V-Log is the choice. Yes, you need to work yourself once through how it works (exposure, color space transform in DR, grading, ..).
      It took me more than a year to learn how to best expose and grade it - now I have a few standard node trees that I just saved as power grades in DR and can quickly throw one on my clips, do a few adjustments, and bang - done.
      This video would never worked in any other profile than V-Log: ruclips.net/video/C5UPTZDCBZ0/видео.html

    I'm not a GH5 or Lumix uses, but I experience the same thing with my Fujifilm X-T3. Shooting F-log gave me the same or even worse looking footage then shooting in a tweaked Eterna picture profile. I would say though, since I got the X-H2S with the new F-log2 LUT, shooting in LOG starts to actually give benefits, since it gives so much more dynamic range than normal F-log or tweaked Eterna.

    At least you know you’re stuff. V-log has a purpose and true, it’s not meant for everyone. I shot my first film with a GH5 and BMPCC4K called “JULIE’S CONFESSION” it’s free on TUBI TV. The introduction and outro was shot entirely on the GH5 with V-log to give me the look I was going for. There’s a reason why there are different color profiles and each one has an end. It’s all about knowing beforehand which one to use. Good video.

Former GH4 - GH5 - GH6 user and owner, current Panasonic S5ii owner, and I have not put it into V-Log once ! It's funny, I even had a client project where I had to unfortunately use Cine-D on the S5ii and S-LOG on the FX3 and the FX3 owner was like "man...how is y our footage already dialed in ?!" lol.. Man, that Cine-D is it !!! It's so IT, I could send the raw footage to client right now and they would roll with it. It's already ready out the camera. Thanks again man, glad you made ur video, I woulda NEVER shot Cine-D lol.

    ok my main realization is that I think vlog is for a full spectrum of dynamic range, where similar to Cine D vs Cine V, one profile is denser in the middle where the real colors are, and for this reason I’m thinking HLG may be the way to go, if not Cine V since yea, you just get way more colors that actually matter

  • @siebenvideografie5948
    @siebenvideografie5948 2 года назад +3

    v-log is very nice in 10bit, but on the gh5 you only get 10bit with 24p in 24p. If you use 60fps to 24fps you only get 8bit and the colors will break up, even with a regular rec709 conversion lut. Weird banding and other shenanigans. Cine-D is my go to because I use 60 to 24 A LOT

    My problem with V Log is it lifts shadows and crushes the midtones making it easy to get noise in those areas. it might be OK in 14-bit like pro film cameras but not in 10-bit. I really like to work around the light and I find on my GH5M2 it's relatively easy to get Kodak Portra, Ektar or Fuiji Super 400 looks when they are printed on paper.

    So funny this video showed up at the PERFECT TIME! I was thinking about this since I bought a new SD CARD literally 2 days ago to fully test V LOG. I realized that I was shooting 10 bit long gop and not the recommended ALL-I for blog and I have been doing this for client work for almost a year. And the results were satisfactory but then when I tried the full capability of v log, it just meant bigger files, more colour grading and honestly…didn’t look as nice as my original ciné d videos I took. I filmed in a vlog, at the minimum ISO (125), set the exposure correction to +2, which equaled +2-3 stops in the light areas according to the luminance spot meter tool. I shot in the best quality, All Intra, 4:2:2, bitrate 400 Mb/sec. But when I started doing color correction, I saw that the sky was all filled with compression artifacts, such shapeless circles. I have banding in the sky. What I did wrong? Maybe I shouldn’t have shot at ISO 125, but shot at ISO 250.
