Ford Capri - 50 Years On

- It was the year man walked on the moon for the first time, the legendary Woodstock festival took place and the very first Boeing 747s reached for the skies. In that same year, half a century ago, Ford’s Capri hit Europe’s roads for the first time.

So when is Ford building a new one? A fun, affordable coupe would fit nicely in Ford's model line-up.
hope so!
But it HAS to be true to the original spirit of the Capri :
RWD
2 door coupé
No electric or hybrid bullshit
hopefully the do it not look what they have done to the Puma an ugly SUV
So basically a Mustang? I personally don't see where between that and a Focus a Capri could fit
@@Dzsevus Mustang isn't small. I was thinking more like a competitor to a 2 series coupe.
Dear Ford, please build a new Capri.
A hybrid sports car would be ideal to have the Capri name!
It'll be a long wheel base Puma... you know the little coupe the bought back as an SUV crossover :/
Don't!!!!
After what they did to the Puma they can't be trusted to re imagine classics anymore.
@@LukeBeasto OMG NO !!! The Ford Capri was a politically incorrect rebel with a big engine that meant business on the road and the track. If it ever returns, it needs to pick up where it left off.
David Neilson Wont happen because the EU laws on emissions so the next best thing is as I said before!
We need a new Capri in our lives. Everything out there just can't hold a candle to the character of what that car delivered. We like the mustang don't get us wrong we just want a stripped out lightweight smaller version with a N/A V6 rear wheel drive coupe. Please👍👌
Proud owner of a 1975 MkII 3000 Ghia.
The Capri has been, still is and will forever be my favourite car in the world.
My Capri has been in my family since it was new and i have sworn to myself that i will never, ever sell it.
*The people* : make an amazing new Capri please
*FORD* : * Builds FWD 4 door crossover * This is what you wanted, no?
If Ford bring the Capri back, it'll most likely be a shadow of its former self. It'll be laden with unnecessary electronics, it'll probably weigh half as much again over the original (has anyone noticed how heavy modern cars are compared to oldies?) and it'll be so full of "safety features" and drive by wire bullshit that it'll lose the immediacy and excitement of the original.
"Retro styled" modern cars never look right either. If you want a Capri, get one. Just don't expect a worthy successor because at best, it'll be an overblown boulevard cruiser covered in chrome plated plastic trim and unnecessary bling.
You pretty much summed up exactly what i was thinking. Best leave the Capri in the past. Any modern interpretation will only be a disappointment. Witness the Beetle, the FIAT 500 and the Mini. Sure, they look vaguely similar to the models they are inspired by, but feature none of the innovations or originality of their forebears.
Hands up who had a bag of cement in the boot to help keep the tail from wagging the dog????
Please don't bring back the Capri as another SUV! If you bring it back please make a modern version of the original recipe!
Too late 😂🥲
@@zyoungson215 I see my comment hasn't aged well 😂
My man, about that...
@@mitchreeves1 You saw the future 😂
Ford: Famous for giving British people a reason not to buy a BMW or European saloon. Please do it again.
My Dad had bought a new '66 Mustang (C code coupe)...when the Capri's rolled into the showrooms in the early 70's we test drove one...I didn't yet have a drivers license as I was probably only 14ish but was already a pretty good driver so my Dad let me drive it on our test drive (yes that was back in the day where the dealer just handed you the key)...it drove very good and was pretty darn peppy. We both thought Ford would sell them like hot cakes but it never really did.
I fall in love with this car!! Current sport ST’s and RS’s inherit the spirit of olds. As usual, wonderful video with Steve behind the wheel. Thanks @fordeurope.
Ford of Europe has pushed back the Ford Focus RS Mk4. 2022-2023 maybe or could be cancelled.
My brother and sister owned 3 Capris before. Does that mean there is a new generation lurking around?😂😂😂
Build a new one i have a capri mk3 myself and i am building it in to a zakspeed capri
How about an all-new Capri RS?
Happy birthday, Capri! I've had 4 Mk3s.......my first was an '87 1.6 Laser and then, when I could finally afford the insurance an '84 2.8 Injection Special, then an '87 Injection Special and then an '81 Injection. Whilst I'd love to see a new Capri (done right.....V6 and RWD) I'm glad we now have the Mustang instead.....although I couldn't wait for the RHD cars, so have an '05 V8 and a '99 V6 :)
Pray Ford! Build new Capri! I have 1, from 1978, it is 2.8i, originally 2000 v6
A bit of advice Lucas, never sell it!
2.8i, one of the best cars ever
I own a 1971 mk1 3l, albeit currently being restored... this makes me more determined than ever to get it done!
"more to come" "the next fifty years" Are those quotes cryptic? I hope so because I would love to own another Capri in modern guise.. I had a 2000GT series and it was one of the most rewarding cars I have owned too... Lacked outright sophistication but was equally eye-catching compared with Porsches and BMWs in many a night club carpark.
It's a shame there's no modern alternative, but the closest is the Nissan 370Z.
Arm Head Would often race with the 240Z and 260Z back in the day!
Great cars too!
@@ces69 the 240z is gorgeous!
Only Ford...
Just Ford....
Thank you Ford
My grandparrents used to have V6.
I was at Capri island.
Wow....this RS2600 is just FANTASTIC !!! Supergeil das Auto - und echt schöner als ein 911er aus dieser Zeit !!!
The RS was Europes Shelby GT 350 or Boss 302.
Had several wonderful fun car to drive still looks good today!
I'm a ford guy but everything they make now except 3 main platforms is a fwd bucket of piss. Long gone are the inline6 and the Rwd.
👌
And cars are so HEAVY now. All the comforts (half of which are never used ?) plus the safety and economy stuff. No feel or fun.
Kents & 2.0l units were all 4 bangers if im not mistaken, there were no inline 6 variants of the Capri
@@rdesousa8955 2.0L was a V6.
@@rdesousa8955 I just like the I6. I have 2 still and one is a Ford.
It's not capri but in 2 weeks I get my focus st delivered in the exact same color. Next week I say goodbye to my fiesta st that is not even one year and say good fortune to its new owner.
Had three in Australia a 3 litre in "True Blue" a veritable rocket, a green 1600GT and Red XL16OO, the wheels on the this one could be alloys offered by Ford at the time called "Contessa "
Here in South Africa we beefed it up to V8 - the "Perana" . . . awesome piece of machinery (preferably in Gunston orange). What memories. Wish I had kept mine.
I had the 2.8i in true blue, had many makes over the years but the Capri stands head and shoulders above the rest
The Capri looked beautiful back then and does Right Now, impervious to the passage of time, even when the world is knocking at the door of 2020. And the same goes for its driving dynamics. Greatness never dies.
What a great video.captures how a capri makes you feel.no fwd pos is gonna do it for ya.
Well done sir.getting another as soon as I've got the coin.a mk2 3000 is calling.
Thank you Ford, appreciated.
i just bought a capri mk2 from 76 last week. :D
Good luck getting spare parts! 😉
@@tritratralalala2580 ah there are so many original parts, the bigger problem is the good old rust😅
Lol 🤣🤣🤣 like i said, good luck... there are no new parts!
@the man with the green cortina i got 74 taunus 2.3 gxl coupe you little muppet... but i also have an 72 BMW and 72 VW Käfer and now guess for which car you cant get original parts from the factory!?
@the man with the green cortina Capri club Evesham John's dear but he's got it.
As cool as it was when it was launched
My favorite v6 2300 Zandvoort my place waar ik woon
Still own one today....ive had several..over the years...The Capri was Sold in the United States by Lincoln Mercury, So we call them the Mercury Capri and the rest of the world calls it the Ford Capri..
The 2000cc Motor with the 4 speed manual....Was fun to drive...this guy is driving the one in this video like a delivery truck...i would take mine to 6000rpm on a regular basis and could get around my buddies yellow 2800 V6 with relative Ease....I think a Retro style Modern Capri would sell like hot Cake's....Eco-Boost 4 valve would be a perfect Match...We can only Hope...😯
Built proud happy 50
I think I just shed a tear. I owned three Capris in my youth, and miss them crazy.
Ford Europe…….well done! Great editing and photography. I was mesmerized. 💪🏻
I had a smile from ear to ear watching this.
I loved them. I had a 1.6s. 2.0s and then went onto a Cavalier 1.6GSI. But could get used to it, so emptied my savings account when I spotted a Capri 280 Brooklands. How I wished I had kept it, but when you're young.
Like others have said, Come on Ford time to make a modern version of the Capri.
Stunning
best car ever made
btw i am mercedes fan
Had two. A 1983 2.0S in peppermint Green, and a 1983 2.8i in Graphite over silver. Both were fab cars....and so easy to work on.!!!!!!
In another 50 years will there videos like this for the Kuga or Edge?
Never
Maybe Focus RS or Mustang :)
Average speed of 200km/h?! At Spa
Come ford bring out an new generation Capri please
Better not. It would be front wheel drive, with a diesel or electric or a suv - not the coupe like the car was before :P
A modern Capri is called...... Jaguar F-type :P The XK had the same rear window but was too big - F-type is like a modern Capri version - it would have to be simmilar price too :/
@@wyrazowfkp well your comment aged well, it became a garbage Electric SUV that shouldn't be called a Capri
@@malinalungu407 ;) I still rebuild a Mk1 and have a little broken Mk2. And that was a known fact. Sad for Ford, and underneath it's not even Ford but a Volkswagen :/
The 1971 Capri 2 litre ohc was my first new car. I paid just over $2100 cdn for her and it was the best money I ever enjoyed spending. My close friend bought the 1972 2.6 litre v6 and we tweaked the compression and induction so much that on a late night test run, we duly surprised a passing Dodge Superbee pilot as we pushed on to 100 mph.......then shifted into 4th gear! Great job Ford of Europe. I wish I could own one again.
wish i kept mine , handled superbly
Hatte selber 2 Ford Cabri, sollte Ford wieder bauen
The original classic capri was more appealing wish I still had mine
Dear Ford, come back to produce a new mid sedan and coupé Rwd. Stop suv!!!
Happy Birthday fantastic car !
Well Ford just shat all over the Capri nameplate with a VW SUV.
Absolute DISGRACE
My favorite car, the Ford Capri. 💖
Capri rules :-)!
I'll tell you right now, this is no stock capri! Beautiful car never the less!!
Owned 2 Mk1 3000cc Capri’s back in the day and a Mk 2 3000cc.
All were wonderful cars particularly the 2nd Mk 1 which I rebuilt with a stage 3 cam shaft and stage 2 heads!
Would keep up with Ferrari’s and Maserati’s of the day, a beast!
To me the holy grail Capri is not the RS 2600 but the RS 3100!
Now if I only win the lottery his week......
My brother owned a sky blue RS3100 in the mid 70s.. he raced open wheelers at the time and we used to tow it with the Capri, which seems sacrilegious now.. 49 were bought to Australia to race, and Ford changed their mind and sold them off to the public.. i cant imagine what it would be worth now.. you never see them anywhere.
Proper video👌
Hello from Wildernes Sweden 🦉I like 1965-1973 USA Ford Mustang, and also i like❤️older Ford Capri 2,3V6 and Ford 2,6V6 Granada 1973-1975 , and also Ford Granada Injektion 1983-1985 2,8 V6 5 Speed manuell-TRX Weels.💣💥
Nice old Ford's
If Ford would re body the current mustang with a v6 ecoboost. Then a new capri would be possible, also re design the body again with the 2.3, 2.0 and 1.5 ecoboost and make an escort rs2300, rs turbo and 1500 sport. Must be styled off the mk2 of course.
I miss my 73 & 76 Capri ....thank you for posting !
I.had one. It was a Mercury Capri!
Got myself a Ford Capri MK3 from 1979, made in Germany a few weeks ago, i love it!
Always liked the Capri.. I owned an immac 2 litre laser but my defining memory of them was watching my bro spank the arse of a"mr I'm faster than anyone" fiat 130 tc mirafiori in one of his many 2.8 injection capri's he owned back in the late 80s early 90s.good times.
Wot up with Ford if they made same as cpri same but with new technology but same body still they would make millions would take place king of all cars I all ways been Ford + will be ford...😊
I have one 1.3 V4 myself and i really love this car!
In Australia Capri = MINCER 😁
Is that the lime green one usually in the back of Zoom magazine doing a wheel stands ?
@@askannav2094 that's the 1😁
Allan Moffat Ford Capri.
Such a clever blend of Escort and Cortina (Taunus) parts, you'd never pick it from the styling, especially with that looong low bonnet. Good for carrying the straight 3.0 L 6 cylinder from the Granada. Yowza.
A 3,0 straigh 6 Pinto engine was planned. But the 1973 fuel crisis killed it off before it came. Granada 3,0 was always the Essex V6.
A gorgeous car with a gorgeous selection of engines (especially the Essex V6 3.0 or RS 3100 and the 2.8i) they are one of my favourite cars and it would be awesome if you made a new Capri, with a NA V6, maybe even a hybrid option if it was 100% necessary. I would definitely buy one as would many others.
I owned a 1973 Capri 2600 V6 from 1972 to 1978. I wanted to put the intake manifold that Offenhauser made for the 2600, but never was able to do so. I wish I still had it but I replaced it with a 1979 Ford Mustang Cobra. Big mistake.
I used to sell these in the 80`s and the last one off the line was in 1986, as salesmen we used to call them CRAPEE¬S we couldn't give them away, in 1987 they dropped the prices down to 1984 prices and the 2.8 brooklands models stuck around till 1989, in fact I remember selling a 2.9 ghia Granada and we did a dealer transfer to Guildford, I wonder if it was the one I drove there.
I had two American 1973 'Mercury' Capri (s?). My second and third cars at 17 and 18. I crashed them both :-( ... My friend crashed my first car, a 318 Gold Duster! I don't miss the Duster, but damn, I miss both of those Capri, they each had their own soul. One BR Green, and one silver with a sunroof. Thanks for taking me on this Capri journey 30 years later!!
HAY! nothing " humble " about a cortina or an escort mate! but the Capri did feel special, that long bonnet with it's bulge, the tiny steering wheel.... it felt....special to me.
I'm still driving a 1984 Ford Bronco 2 with the 2.8Liter V-6. The Cologne engine is bulletproof!
My brother owned the model after this, the RS 3100, which had more power and handling options.. 49 were shipped to Australia in the mid 70s with a view to racing them, and then abandoned the idea and sold them off to the public.. fantastic car.. front and rear air dam, black leather upholstery.. tweaked by Ford in Cologne.. great little car,. and very rare in this day and age.
I drove the Mustangs and the Capri's of that time, Tough call. Mustangs had the power. European pony had the corners. Tie.
I owned 11 of them in the 70's, I still have one today
I have always loved the Capri. Ford could reintroduce this with Ecoboost engine and it would be an instant hit
Please include a V6 3.0 Injection Turbo
I drove a Mrk III Ghia 2,8 V6 injection. It was more than fast and real Porsche and BMW hunter! The Danish police had two of them for motorway patrol!
Cars for the enjoyment of driving.... Sadly, that breed is long gone, replaced by bluetooth, net nannies and, if you are lucky, flappy paddle shifters. I never owned a capri (a friend did) but I owned it's cousin from across the pond, an 88 Mustang LX 5.0. I waited a year because in 88 they rearranged the pedals to facilitate toe and heal shifting. With the 4 rear shocks it handled the curves well for a solid rear axle car of the day. It was a GT in the true sense of the term. How I miss the double clutch downshifting and toe and heal braking before hitting the apex and accelerating out of the curve. Today's cars have replaced that enjoyment with computer controlled horsepower and vector thrust and electronic steering. They may be more technically better, but they lost their driving soul. It won't be long before we won't be driving at all, but only a passenger in a self driving pod. A sad end to the liberator of we humans. Time to find a vintage car and enjoy the drive until it is outlawed in the name of safety. That is NOT progress. So sad. Ford how could you let the dream go?
My favourite car of all time and still promising myself
50 years celebration should include 5000, 500 or even 50 new releases to commemorate the occasion.
There would probably be quite a bit of excitement in the enthusiast community if Ford were to license a reproduction bodyshell of the first generation Capri. The Mustang has been seeing renewed interest since the release of New shells.
Best piece steve has ever done😎
I always had a soft spot for a Capri I always wanted one but they are becoming expensive to buy and rare to find in good condition I would love to see a new one but I worry that after seeing the new puma that it might become some sort of suv or hybrid electric vehicle and that not the spirit of the Capri and with the mustang selling world wide Ford are not going to build another coupe that will rival its pony car and risk damaging its sales figures
Exactly!
Ralphs Tomalin!! Such an insult to the late, great Rolf Stommelen! When they are making subtitles, why don't they consult people who knows the subject!!
Its the car I always promised myself...I still haven't delivered on that promise yet
nw8000 Lucky for me, I did! My second car at the end of senior high...an orange ‘76 with rostyles, 2.3 liter, five speed manual and loads of fun! What I wouldn’t give for an ‘86 2.8 injection, or 280 Brooklands! You need to deliver on that promise sooner than later, they’re becoming a super rare sight nowadays :(
I know we have the Mustang now in Europe, but it would be great to see the pre-come together again as a budget coupe
#FordCapri
And instead they gave us an SUV new model based on a VW ID4?
I start my apprenticeship at Ford Cologne just after the start of the production of the Capri in 1969 too and was in employment with Ford for about 49 years. I saw a lot of Ford Models during and after the Capri production. But not me alone, a lot of colleagues which were contemporary witness of the Capri production from 1969 - 1984 get goos bumps and wet eyes see and remember to the Capri. And also not me alone answer "I had one and I love this car". It was for me by the way the first "new buyed car" after my apprenticeship and the first earned money. A Capri '73 1.6 XL.
@David Galea
Hello David,
I have this video of the Capri Production, no doubt. But knowing Cologne Plant well, this vid presents different areas, which you can see on Google Maps in the north part of the city Cologne, direct located at the river Rhine.
First part if the vid presents engine production in the 1962 founded new plant W on the north west part of the whole plant area.
Body stamping and welding was in Plant F and K and painting in K too. Plant U was at that time the galvanic plant for chromeplating of bumpers and also is until today the location of the central lab, where I was educated in material testing. Plant Y in the north was the final assembly of painted bodies with engines, axles, wheels interior.
Plant R was the forge and aluminum die casting, where I was located after my education in total for nearly 30 years in the lab. In 2002 I got a new function in final assembly Y and until my retirement und supplier QM Service. Other plants are for transmission manuacturing.
Today all the plants are doing more or less the same, apart from the chrome plating, which was closed with the introduction of plastic bumpers and by enviromental requirements for the whole automotive with their previous assembled steel, chrome plated bumpers.
And to answer your question: I am not in the vid.
That's how I felt and still feel about the used '72 2000 I owned in the '80s. Special and fun car, for sure.
Please Ford bring them back, but no electric. Just a proper n/a motor.
Still a beautiful design after all these years
Have had 4 of them myself, and loved them all..
Would be nice with a MK4 ;-)
Ford,I hope that in near future you gonna make new Capri, specialy now when Puma is crossover. We all need Ford coupe car in Europe...Best regards.
Yes Ford make a AWD RS Cosworth Capri 600bhp, all I can say is.....Take! My! Money!😎
one of the best ford ever built
Für mich ist der Capri ab 1978 der schönste, besonders der 2,8i gefällt mir sehr gut.
I have owned Capris continuously since 1993. My first was a lowly 1600 auto mk1, my current is a mk 3 V8. Best car ever.
@David Galea I sold that particular Capri to a local guy who had plans to turn it into a drag car.
I have an hydraulic clutch setup in my current V8 with a mustang T5 gearbox. My previous V8 in Australia had an XR8 bellhousing (rare) with a cable clutch with a Falcon T5.
Beautiful car from a time when they really could build beautiful cars. - So what ? - YES, - I need find one in best shape as possible : )
Why doesn't it have front and rear bumpers? It looks weird without them.
On The Dirt I like it and was just asking my self why didn’t I take mine off back in the 70’s! Lol
On The Dirt It's an early lightweight RS, the racing versions also had no bumpers.
Am I the only one that really thought the capri was terrible?
