Thank you for the instructions for the roll,- I was just searching for them! By the way,- it is a perfect "under-hat" hairstyle, because it is sleek on top, and biggest part of the hair is gathered where the hat usually ends :)
Here’s one without the hair rat. It’s a bit messy but I kinda like it this way better. Adds some modern touch to it. ruclips.net/video/fJqEKYb-5FM/видео.html
The name "hair rat" comes from small littler pieces of felted hair that women used to wrap their hair around (for example for faux bangs or for the complex hairstyles in the Edwardian area)
In Edwardian era they managed to collect their own hair after brushing to make diy hair rats. Guess having ankle length hair sped up the process noticeably.
It was not just the Victorian area but actually carried on much further into the 1940s. You would collect your own hair, sometimes for years, make it a ratty mess together into a paded shape and wrapped in a fine net.
I've collected my own from my cut hair and used that. You have to rough it up a lot to make the rat, then roll into a hair net. Then it looks exactly like your own hair because it is!
This was incredibly helpful because my hair is long and thick! And for my WWII Reenacting I almost gave up on this hairstyle for going out in the field! Thank you 🙏
My mum kept her 1940's style well into her 80's. Curlers in every night, wonderful wave in the front. I was able to do it for her for a while before she had to go into a home. I need to have a go with my hair!
This is amazing! Yes I had no idea how to do this look for my suffragette costume until I found you and your “hair rat”. I actually made my own with a sock and a thin elastic headband-type hair elastic. Like you use at the gym to keep all the whispys back. It is amazing now. My husband does suggest I find a brown sock rather than white but I works best with thicker curlier hair. I let my hair dry naturally
Hey Elizabeth, I'm not a vintage girl but I love Jessica's personality and style !! So does she look like Marilyn Monroe? Only you Elizabeth Macmillan can tell ;) - I can tell from your picture that you too have the same style ;)
Excellent demo! I purchased one of these things and had no idea how to use it, where to put the thin band, how to use the pins, etc. Thanks so much for a clear and inspiring presentation!
I'll choose Your 'bad hair day' over mine any time ⏰ Shall have to look for one of those rats, only thing I don't like is the elastic 👀 Wonder if there's a way to hide it? 😎 Thank you for your generosity in making these wonderful and wity videos for all of us 💞
If you're not too keen on the elastic you can try a Heidi roll which has clips at either end: ruclips.net/video/yh3Nn-8x4hE/видео.html OR.... rather than a rat you could try the look with a scarf to wrap your hair around. Hope that helps! Glad you're enjoying my videos 😊
Your “bad hair day” at the beginning was incredibly sexy. I think I understand why it was so scandalous in days of yore to see a woman’s hair undone and loose. Your hair is just lovely, regardless of how it is styled!
I bought one of those rollers but never understood how to wear it with the rubber band and all. Thanks for showing :) I must also say, I really love your cute face expressions and smiles :)
I once had an incredible wire hair accessory that made this style even more of a breeze. It was similar to the wire headbands that are so popular these days, only it was longer, and the wire was much, much sturdier. you'd fold it over the bottom of your hair, then roll it up until it was at the nape of your neck, then pull the two ends of the wire across/through each other to fasten it. I've been really, really wanting one lately, but i got the original at a craft fair and no one on Etsy seems to make them. I wonder if anyone else has had one or knows what they're called?
Jessica, Lovely, Lovely hairstyle. You make it seem so easy. When you mentioned a hair rat, I was brought back to when my mother had one. But it was very different. Hers was made of bendable mesh amd metal and looked a bit like a tornado with one end open wider and then tapering so that only a pencil would slip through. She used her's for creating a French Roll that looked almost effortless. However, it was actually very difficult, as it involved holding the roll in place and used massive amounts of bobby pins and hairpins. I wish I could have saved it so that I could se it again. But I ramble. Again thank you for the hair tutorial. 👗 Tricia B
I’ve ALWAYS loved this look and always wondered how it was done!!!!!! I’ve loved it since I was kid! Um, like 2 years ago, *cough*. :) Thank you for showing it!
wow great video Jessica loved it,,, very enjoyable its allways a joy to see your videos,,,,, I love the hummor in them ,,, wirty hummor its a very nice look,,, suits you, a lot,,, Jessica,,,, thankyou again,,,,
I'm sitting here watching this video in awe because what even?! This hair tutorial is magic?! If I had hair I would try it, I guess I'll give it a few more months ^_^
Your so beautiful and refined and I love your accent. I could listen to your voice all day. You should be on the show Call The Midwife, you would be perfect for the role! (It's my favorite show!) Lots of love from Tennessee:)
My auntie was 15 when the war ended.my auntie showed my how to do this hair style, she used to have a head band and tuck her hair in it.. the style was very popular during the war.
I came searching for this video after falling in love with your hair in your election video, and am about to order myself a hair rat so I can try it for myself!
This hairstyle is really pretty, I might try it. Apparently my great-gran used to wear her hair like this, as her hair was was really really really long and really thick.
Do you ever struggle making a hairstyle neat (the finishing part, when you were adding the pins) due to the reduced feeling in your hands? I struggle getting my hair neat and finished, but I think it may be due, in part, to a lack of practice? I do love the "styles for 'gross' hair" tutorials! As a fellow spoonie I'm sure you understand... my hair is greasy more often than it isn't! How well do you think these styles would hold without hairspray?
Hi lovely, I do find it difficult to make my hair perfect thanks to my numb fingers but hairspray definitely helps. Also, I've done it in front of a mirror so many times it's now muscle memory! It can certainly be done without hairspray for a loose look, especially with quite soft and fluffy hair (I'm thinking romantic edwardian style here) x
Love all of your hair tutorials!!!! Any tips on how to style shorter hair (bob-length)? I'm growing mine out, and I'm sick of just putting it in a pony tail😣
Aw, thank you lovely! I'd say you have three routes for making sort hair fun: (1) Curling it into either bouncy 50s styles or 20s finger waves- i'm going to be doing some more hair curling videos with my new short hair soon! (2) Accessorise! Lots of flowery pins, scarfs, ribbons, etc... (3) what i call 'twirling' your hair; creating lots of hair swirls. I'm going to make a video about this soon too but you can see a version of it in my 'Disabled In School' video. Hope that helps! x
I love all your Tutorials! I tried to do this style and I my hair was too thin to cover the hair roller. :C Can you recommend any styles for thin hair?
This looks great! I’m having trouble because the band on my rat is slipping to the back of my head. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Seems easy enough but as usual, not easy for me.
I'm really curious if this will work on shorter, layered hair like mine. It would be really nice to have a style I can go to on days where I don't wash my hair that is slightly more appealing than "barely brushed and maybe used a hot iron if I feel like it?"
legit this hairstyle would be so good to keep my hair out of the way on lab days (and it looks amazing) but at the same time i feel like it's just too pretty to wear to uni :') :'(
Back in the day women kept a jar or box on their vanity where they would keep hair that had fallen out or from the comb and brush then that would be used to give the shape. Then we figure out how to make the rat
Never used a hair rat, just grabbed the front pieces of my hair on both sides tied them to the back & wrapped the hair around that hair & pin everything in place then done.
I bet you it’s called a “hair rat” because they used to be made out of real hair. When my hair is just a mess of tangles my mom calls it a rat’s nest, or she’ll just say it’s “ratty”. I bet you the first hair rats were just the balls of hair that ladies yanked out of their brushes and combs, and then pinned to their heads
I actually liked your hair at the start of the video lol. I'll take a "bad" hair day like that any day
Ha ha ha, thank you! 💖
Lol me, too! 😊
Thank you for the instructions for the roll,- I was just searching for them! By the way,- it is a perfect "under-hat" hairstyle, because it is sleek on top, and biggest part of the hair is gathered where the hat usually ends :)
Am I crazy for thinking this look was done with no accessories? I had no idea of the existence of a hair rat. Amazing!
If your hairs thicker I think it can be done
@@emmaspaz6435 I guess it is possible but having a horizontal base makes it 5x easier regardless of length or thickness
Here’s one without the hair rat. It’s a bit messy but I kinda like it this way better. Adds some modern touch to it.

I actually wore my hair like this today! I got so many compliments and I'm going to have amazing curls for tonight always a plus!
amazing! So pleased it worked for you! 💗

Love this! I've done this style without a rat or with a rat without the elastic, but this looks so much easier.
You're so charming. I have been binging your videos. Your hair tutorials are my favorites :)
You look like a 1940s pin-up goddess!!
Thank you! 😊
Perfect! I didn’t feel like washing my hair tonight so I’ll be trying this tomorrow 👍
I'm definitely going to try this out!Btw I think your hair at the Beginning looks great 👍🏻
I agree!!!! She looks super hot at be the beginning !!
Hakima France Yes I think it even has some kind of Marilyn attitude (Marilyn Monroe obviously not Marson)
Hey Elizabeth, I'm not a vintage girl but I love Jessica's personality and style !! So does she look like Marilyn Monroe? Only you Elizabeth Macmillan can tell ;) - I can tell from your picture that you too have the same style ;)
I also think she looks super hot with her natural straight hair :D
Hakima France Actually this is a picture from my favorite character of the TV series "Miss fisher's murder mysteries" ;)
You are just lovely. I don't know if it is the lighting or what, but you look particularly glowing today. GORGEOUS
I'm so impressed you noticed my new way of arranging the lights! Glad it made a difference! 👏
Excellent demo! I purchased one of these things and had no idea how to use it, where to put the thin band, how to use the pins, etc. Thanks so much for a clear and inspiring presentation!
Fabulous!!!! Going to add my vintage 40s beret hat to this fabulous look!

Absolutely beautiful and I love your hair color

I always do my hair like this for 40s events but I use a handkerchief tied at the top of my head behind my fringe. Works a treat
Though you're deaf (still can't remember which: hard of hearing or deaf), you create AMAZING content, audio wise. The video is AWESOME as well
where has this tutorial been all my life? aaarrgh the frustration in trying to do a Gibson roll...Thank you for this
Yay! Glad to help x
I don't think your hair looks awful at all! It's beautivul! And such a beautiful color! ☺
This looks great. Also, your hair is AMAZING 😍😍

I don't think anyone can look as attractive as you do using hairspray 5:11 Just amazing!

sooooooooooooooo beautiful and easy
Hi Jessica loved you hair like this. Marie

I have one and I just Adore it
Wowzers!
I love it but if only if I can do it to my hair but I can't
I love the music!
Great content. Keep it up!

I have no idea what you're talking about at the beginning, your hair looked stunning! 😅
Well hot dog...that's a rat with an elastic piece! I never have seen that! Game changer.
Che voce, particolarissima donna...bella
I love all your Tutorials! I tried to do this style and I my hair was too thin to cover the hair roller. :C Can you recommend any styles for thin hair?
This looks great! I’m having trouble because the band on my rat is slipping to the back of my head. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Seems easy enough but as usual, not easy for me.

Do you have any advice about making it look smooth where the elastic meets the roll? That's the hardest part for me to make it look halfway decent.
What lipstick are you wearing in this video, I love the shade!!
Lol, you're so silly! I love your videos!!
+Miss Galilee 🙌🙌
ohgosh you are soooo lovely ! can't decide if you are life or wife goals ... probably both .... keep going ! *lots of love from germany
Anyone have an updated source for purchasing something like this? Available in the US?
legit this hairstyle would be so good to keep my hair out of the way on lab days (and it looks amazing) but at the same time i feel like it's just too pretty to wear to uni :') :'(
You are stunning, by the way. My goodness. How do you keep the elastic from sliding off? Do you put the pins into the rat itself, or against the head?
Could this be done with a regular headband??
I wear my hair like this quite often. I can't tell you how many ladies I've had stop me and ask how I accomplish this style.
Can this roll be used to make it look like your hair was rolled under instead of over?
gorgeous :-)
💕💖💕
How do you keep the headband form puffing up the the back of your hair and making you look crazy??
Could this be done in reverse as I have an under shave?
*takes notes*
How did you make the hair bun with the string
Where can this be found?
Una Diva
Back in the day women kept a jar or box on their vanity where they would keep hair that had fallen out or from the comb and brush then that would be used to give the shape. Then we figure out how to make the rat
You are quite a beauty. You should be in movies:)
'bad hair day'...I've actually taken snapshots, so I can have my hair cut like that...:D
Where was the hair rat purchased?
when her before hair looks 15x better than your after hair....
Where can I purchase one of those rat hair things? :-)
Never used a hair rat, just grabbed the front pieces of my hair on both sides tied them to the back & wrapped the hair around that hair & pin everything in place then done.
Well that's it,I can finally marry my fiance because I can now do this hair style! I just need a rat with elastic!
I wish i can do this...but my hair is like a nest. Think bald would be the look for me.😅
Item not available anymore 😭
Its too hard for long hair 86cm 😪
I still don´t understand how you make your hair to obey you...mine is ....awwwww
My hair is too long for this😢
Orianna
😂 Your bad hair is what my hair does every day of its own accord!
Awful hair? It looks great!
Jesus, "aweful hair" at the beginning. I think not! I wish my hair had such body
0:00 no offense but you kind of startled me
She didn’t get the elastic on the top of her head covered with hair. I will try to do better. 😘
I didn’t know you were deaf because I watch RUclips with the sound off! And how come all the pretty girls have widows peaks? NF!
yeah, that wont work with my hair mainly cause its up to my knees😓
The hair rat??? So not a good name lol
However it does leave you with a beautiful hair style 👍🏿
Its called a hair rat because they used to be made from your hair gathered from brushes...
SO much wasted time meant to entertain me. Doesn't entertain; just makes me not watch. Bye
Oh no. Whatever will we do. I guess she'll have to close the whole channel now.
