Boring? Never! I don't think I've physically touched a Commodore 64 since I was in grade school but between you and Adrian Black I am reasonably sure that I could diagnose and repair one!

Never apologize for making a C64 video. They ae always welcome.
I would prefer to use a pull up resistor on the address line and only 2 wires to the switch. That way if the switch breaks, the address line doesn't just float.

I may have a few to repair myself soon :) It's always good to see repair videos, there is always something to learn from them. I have debated doing my own a few times, but I am not really very good at videos, and there would be far too much swearing in them :D
Always nice to see another Commodore 64 fixed, no matter what the problem is :)
Next year will be Commodore 64's 40th birthday, so it's good to see as many as possible still working.
There probably aren't too many of them left in this world, as probably many of them were recycled or ended up in landfill during the time, when it was thought that they have no value anymore.
I quite enjoy these videos - it teaches me things!

This is part of why we watch this channel, we love it!
Ha, my kids started out with a Vic 20 and my son made a working Blackjack game in about 4 hours. Then the next year the got a C64 back about 82. My daughter never much cared for them. My son has been a Software Engineer since 86 and has never looked back. These old timers were a hoot for their day. 👍 The only issue we had in the long term were the power supplies.

Just picked up my first ever C64! I have a video of it coming out next week, my first attempt at turning it on to see if it works. It was advertised as untested when I bought it...

It never occurred to me until now just how weird it is that, in English, we call a black screen a blank screen, when blank comes from the French “blanc”, meaning white.
Interesting - perhaps because of white paper?
@@krnlg Yeah, I figured that was why. I meant weird for English learners, or particularly French speakers. Imagine you're French, in English class, and you hear "blank" means literally the opposite of what you thought.

No such thing as a boring repair. You do great vids!

I prefer adding both kernals into the same Flash or EPROM (twice as big) instead of switching between two different physical PROMs.
The advantage to a one chip solution is that the switch can be simpler (if using a pull-up or pull-down resistor) and affects only the msb (most significant bit) in the address lines of the PROM... essentially the state is _static_ , the address bit either remains high or low and the "pull" resistor means that, if the switch is disconnected, then the kernal select is still stable.
The issue with using 2 smaller PROMs is that now the signal being switched is _dynamic_ (eg an actively chaninging CE or CS line) and so has a longer circuit length (2 wires and the switch) than normal. This can bring timing closer to an unstable point in the timing between CS/CE, addr setup and data-bus and cause issues.

Most UNboring and quite useful for those of us who also might need to fix our stuff. Gives some good hints on what to look for & try.

With that kind of yellowing that c64 shows some spirit and also sign of age, wear and tear :)
I think when you find where you put the keyboard loopback adapter (presuming it's an original) you should see if you could figure out a schematic for it, so people could build their own.

Definitely not boring. Any of these are cool to see and for me, none of them are simple.
I have a Vic20 now (as of some months ago) which I thought was gone ages ago, it's actually the same one I had as a kid, my Dad found it recently in his attic above the garage where it's been for many years and been through some hot summers and cold winters up there. I haven't tried to fire it up but I assume it's toast after years of extreme temperature swings. The keys felt pretty stiff to press in :/ I think it only has an rf hookup anyway so I'd have to get a different cable to even try it out.
EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention there was also an Atari XE in there and that might be the stiff keyboard I'm remembering. That one I don't think was an rf hookup I could likely give that one a shot if I dig it out.
You should set up a retro computer museum.
I would watch even if you fixed a toaster. Every experience is a new chance to learn.

Hello is this c64 diagnostic rev586220++ can be downloaded or I have to buy it? Is it possible to put it on easy flash3? If legal download is possible where I can find it?
1983 MOS Technology manufactured ICs, doomed to fail due to a now known manufacturing process defect.
@Jan Beta - can you please explain why red on C64 is not red but brownish? Also yellow is not exactly yellow.
speaking of......I think I may have damaged mine. I'm trying to replace the cartridge slot since de-oxit was no longer working. I got the top half of pins desoldered it very very finicky. Then I started on the bottom half. My back was sore as hell. And like 3 pins in I think I noticed a damaged trace. I'm like dammit!! I can bodge it, but DAMMIT!!!! Anyway next weekend I'll try to finish it. I started trying to remove the metal shield. I gave up on that. My cheapo iron can't do it. Hopefully I can finish without further damage. I also need to fix my PSU. I used a MIDI cable for power. It can't carry enough power with my U2+ plugged in. Thankfully I got around that by external power to the U2+. I have a replacement cable. I got it from a guy that sells PSUs. I think his is the nu-brick. If not it's the re-brick. Either way I can tell the cable is better. The SID is still good though!!
Broken ROM switch + using the keyboard = vibration. Potentially using the keyboard was causing the broken ROM switch to make/break contact causing the issues?
The biggest issue of this machine to me was to see how the Commodore-badge has been pierced through "right in the middle". I mean, the case is pretty big, why couldn´t they figure out just any other spot ?
Maybe the defect switch was the issue?
Try setting changing the switch during normal usage.

That was more boring than I thought... ;-) No, tbh I like tinkering with those individually modded systems. Trying to identify what those mods are supposed to do and such.
