It drove the record companies nuts but the fans loved it. That is why they formed Swan Song records so they could make music without worrying what record companies thought.

This song exemplifies the brilliance of Led Zeppelin. You can hear the character of the songs desperation increase as he begs to be saved from the Gallows Pole. The music and Plant's voice start soft and slowly increase in intensity. The laughing at the end just sums it all up. Beautifully crafted.
Brilliant song. About a man on the gallows begging for his life. As he gets more and more desperate, the song speeds up. Yet another Led Zeppelin masterpiece.

I think this is the only version where the hangman basically goes, "thanks for letting me tap your sister. LOL, hanging you anyway". In the older versions of the song (Maid Freed from the Gallows/Prickle-Eye Bush) the condemned is usually freed.

I remember buying a double cd. The early days and the latter days. I still regard that as the best I ever bought. Absolutely amazing.
Amazing lyrics. Love the way it rocks harder as it nears the end. Plant's voice is strong yet plaintive and Page just kills on guitar. Highly underrated song.

@@gavatundejr4986 There isn't....as commented above. And anyway....there is no need to look beyond perfection. By the way....calling someone 'ignorant' when you don't know them is moronic. Get a life and listen to Led Zep and widen your own horizons.....they are obviously limited.
Because it did, the blues versions were adaptations of a English folk song, maid freed from the gallows/ the prickly bush. So a folk cover of this and it’s gone full circle.
It’s brilliantly composed and performed! One of my many favorite Zep tunes! The guitar and banjo perfectly compliment one another, along with of course, Jonesy’s exquisite mandolin riffs! Again, brilliant!😄👌
Throughout their career as a band, Led Zeppelin never stopped evolving. Each album had just a little something different than the last one. It is hard to really nail down their style because they invented a whole new style.
Imagine being obsessed with Zep I and II and then in a short 11 months, they've grown beards and make an album that's 60% acoustic. Amazing and an ethereal trip, especially when embellished with electric guitars. Jimmy uses some intriguing effects on his electrics on this record, tremolo on Immigrant Song, direct injection on Celebration day and a few others, 12 string overdubs, Leslie speaker flourishes here or there, some beautiful ADT guitar on Since I've been loving you that's effectively a doubled slapback delay sound, the bathroom reverb slab guitar of Out on the Tiles, those buttery lead lines at the end of Gallows reminds me of Ramble On in some ways, like this Is a successor. More rustic tho. Ramble On is very electric at its core. Love Zeppelin III
Commenting already 3-4 times on this song, the background laughing that comes in at 3:22 is my personal favorite part of the song and absolutely makes it one of my, all time favorite songs. And to me atleast, it always sounded like John Bonham. The man who inspired me to drum. So, it's special, and even if it isn't, it's still damn catchy to, laugh? Sing with it?
How about that entrance, too? The drum part exploding into the song is one of my favorite elements. Cheers on playing, too, I hope you get as much practice and performance time as you want! Bonzo was a big part of my entrance into drumming as well, he's such a legend. Cheers!
LZ3: My absolute all-time favorite. Plays in my head to this day. Those folk can make some way good music. Some, but few, compare. Thanks LZ in all your iterations.
All these instruments playing together form one brilliant song. The guitar 🎸, banjo, and mandolin stay in perfect rhythm along with the pounding of the drums 🥁. Absolutely a masterpiece like all the other Led Zeppelin songs. By the way, whoever plays the banjo does an excellent job. 👌
The Battle of Evermore has begun. So I'm packin' my bags for the misty mountains Where the spirits go Over the hill, where the spirits fly. The apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness The ground is rich from tender care- Repay do not forget The pain of war cannot exceed The woe of aftermath The Magic Runes are writ in gold To bring the Magic back Bring it back...
Jimmy page was not happy with the media's negative reaction to this album.Which is why their fourth album remained untitled, and did not feature the bands name on the cover.Atlantic records had been aghast at this idea but page was adamant.Jimmy wanted to show that Zeppelin could sell their albums in huge numbers, even without these features....He was right.
Love that attitude: “Oh ya? Here’s an album that will be a classic for decades. You figure out how to promote it”. Jimmy caught a lot of flak in the Atlantic office. Probably reminded him of being sent to the Schoolmaster’s office for bringing his guitar to school. They used to store it in the office and give it back to him at the end of the school day.
This song is unbelievable.
The lyrics are chilling and tell a story archetypical to humanity, over the most fitting and beautiful music.

@@gavatundejr4986 There isn't....as commented above. And anyway....there is no need to look beyond perfection. By the way....calling someone 'ignorant' when you don't know them is moronic. Get a life and listen to Led Zep and widen your own horizons.....they are obviously limited.
@@daviddavis2250 You are right... They wouldn't!
@@tigermcflash131 i adore zeppelin, but there is alot of incredible music out now
This song KILLS me every time!
You need CPR?
Brings me back to life too so it evens out
Possibly the greatest acoustic intro
Led Zep made this blues tune sound like it come right out of the Anglo Saxon Dark Ages.
Because it did, the blues versions were adaptations of a English folk song, maid freed from the gallows/ the prickly bush.
So a folk cover of this and it’s gone full circle.
Their folky influences are just sublime.
@@paulhems4048 too subtle and too steeped in history for modern day audiences to appreciate generally speaking
Sure does
Heh...
LED Zeppelin a maior banda de rock and roll de todos os tempos insuperável é pura magia 🇧🇷🤘🏿🔥☮️⭐🌙🪱🕯️🎩🥃🚬🔱🕯️
I love Jimmy Page. Love to hear
Him play. Love to watch him play. Definitely an elegance about the band. May we always have them and the music!
It’s brilliantly composed and performed! One of my many favorite Zep tunes! The guitar and banjo perfectly compliment one another, along with of course, Jonesy’s exquisite mandolin riffs! Again, brilliant!😄👌
It’s a great cover of Leadbellys original
@@dccorallo Leadbelly's isn't the original, it's a traditional
@@dccorallo This song is hundreds of years old.
Great song. The mandolin is simply sublime as well as the banjo.
In my opinion one of their best songs
They didn't even write it. It came out in 1939
@@tdaugharty9440 so what ? and it is actually a song from the 18h century, dummy. it is an folklore song. you talk out you arse.

The first 10 seconds of this song has such an indescribable sound.

Best Zeppelin Song , Best Band Ever ..🔥🔥
Banger. No lies were told and all parties were rocked. Case closed.
Who is addicted to Rock and Roll ?
A favorite. The beginning is so mystical and eerie.
I'm lucky,I remember when this song came out.I still love it along with Zeppelin. Never get tired of their fantastic music. Amazing musician's.
Actually, I thought this was easily their best album. Jimmy always thought it was underrated. He was sooo right…
Absolutly magnificient! The greatest band ever!
~
The excellent sound of a folky blues rock track.
Masterpiece from the best band of all times! ❤
Led Zeppelin 3 is their most underrated album.
Yes it is. First album i heard was this one from the band and probably my fave although Physical Graffiti and 4 are up there to.No doubt !!
I love to hear the banjo in this song should be used more often in Rock n roll music
Throughout their career as a band, Led Zeppelin never stopped evolving. Each album had just a little something different than the last one. It is hard to really nail down their style because they invented a whole new style.
Led Zeppelin III is my favorite.
The banjo in this song is 🔥
Imagine being obsessed with Zep I and II and then in a short 11 months, they've grown beards and make an album that's 60% acoustic.
One of the greatest songs ever converted.
One word. LEADBELLY
Those Bass licks in the outro………..gorgeous!!!
That outro bass is groovy AF
45 years ago I'd crank this up LOUD in my college dorm room when I needed to rock! Still rocks.
Aaaaah aaah aaah .
How about that entrance, too? The drum part exploding into the song is one of my favorite elements. Cheers on playing, too, I hope you get as much practice and performance time as you want! Bonzo was a big part of my entrance into drumming as well, he's such a legend. Cheers!
This song takes me somewhere
The greatest song progression I’ve ever heard
LZ3: My absolute all-time favorite. Plays in my head to this day. Those folk can make some way good music. Some, but few, compare. Thanks LZ in all your iterations.
All these instruments playing together form one brilliant song. The guitar 🎸, banjo, and mandolin stay in perfect rhythm along with the pounding of the drums 🥁. Absolutely a masterpiece like all the other Led Zeppelin songs. By the way, whoever plays the banjo does an excellent job. 👌
Jimmy on Banjo for the first time in this song
Gallows pole maaaamitaaaa aaaaaltoooo teeeemaaaaa looooocoooo aaaaaaarrrrggggg mamita te fulmina la cabeza este temazo.led zeppelin alta banda papaaaa

Thanks Led Zeppelin !
The Battle of Evermore has begun.
So I'm packin' my bags for the misty mountains
Where the spirits go
Over the hill, where the spirits fly.
The apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness
The ground is rich from tender care-
Repay do not forget
The pain of war cannot exceed
The woe of aftermath

Rock that Banjo....🔥
Over all best band ever ! ! !
Amazing emotion...ebb and flow of musical exuberance
So great! A story in a song… And a song in a story. Really , really love it.
Just brilliant!! Gotta love those banjos!!
Another of my favourite songs.
