Could this be the perfect cruising boat? The 1999 Najad 441 blew me away with its balance of comfort, performance, and low-maintenance design. In this video, I’ll walk you through why this Swedish-built beauty might just be the ultimate offshore cruiser. From the bonded teak decks (no screws, no leaks!) to the rock-solid Divinicell core and responsive cable steering, this boat checks all the right boxes. Plus, it’s got a sugar scoop stern and those famous super-wide side decks that make life onboard so much easier. But is it the one? Let’s find out.

I fell for Nayad when Sailing Ran got theirs.. amazing boat, and as you said, it checked all my boxes..
Wow. I was watching this vid, and half way through saw a pic of myself! I’m In the red cap, sitting on the cockpit coaming of a new Najad 460 (Tillvaro) that we were sailing from Najad in Sweden to Cherbourg in June 2004. Wonderful boats. I owned a Najad 390 - visually the smaller sister to the Najad 440 /441.
That's hilarious...

I have one N460.
Owner of a Najad 360 here. Can only agree on everything. Great boats!
In 2007 I bought a Sweden Yacht (in Sweden). The broker described Halberg Rassey, Najad, Malo as bricks by comparison. As I am now in my mid 60’s the N405 is going to be my replacement yacht. The more you sail on a Swedish boat the more you appreciate the build quality.
In my 20', my family had a Sweden Yacht. Beautiful boat and sailed very well.
This is precisely what I've been looking for! I hadn't even heard of these boats, but now that I've looked into them, I'm hooked!
I've been drooling over Najads my entire life! They have always been on my short list :D
I consume a lot of sailing RUclips and I just want you to know that YOU ARE NAILING IT!! This video is literally boat porn. Highly intelligent gorgeous man just serving it! You just
reinvented yourself for this new chapter and it is fucking awesome!
Thats a great Bluewater boat!!! I would love to sail with that boat over the oceans!
Ran II was a Niad 44. It seemed like a great boat. They opted to sell it and build their own.
Not it’s called Tela-Ru … still on RUclips
They sold in a hurry having crossed the Atlantic ... his dad developed cancer so they sold the boat to get home in a hurry till the end but that's when they bought the farm ..and developed their build ..
Ran2 had balsa core in the decks but Ewan was meticulous about sealing any holes though like most things he does.
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Johan, not Ewan. Lived in Sweden for 15 years. Most of my family is Swedish.
Jesus!! I’m so in love right now!!! I’m hitting you up when we’re ready to sail!
Always learning from you, thank you. My wife and I are in the process of moving somewhere in the Med, preferably Greece, wife is making the effort in getting her second passport through ancestry.
That being said I love that boat and once my skills advance it would be a great vessel to cross oceans. In May will will be sailing on a Garcia Exploration 45 in the Med., another boat we are very attracted too.
Great boat my favourite boat of all time
I had a 390 Najad it was such a brilliant safe boat sailed it in everywhere in the Mediterranean and up to the UK Scotland
Sold it last year because of space but regretted it
So will look for a 44 now
Beautiful boat. I'm still a few years away from buying, but seems this should be on the list! I've always loved the look of Beneateaus and chartering them, but am slowly learning more about the merits of blue water boats and may become a convert when the time comes. I appreciate all of your content! Thanks!
This is some top-notch work! Were in the middle of refitting our 65 power catamaran as well, and its great to connect with others who are doing the same. Thanks for sharing your journey!
That Najad is magnificent... Excellent choice...
Agreed. Good choice!
Fantastic video, we spent 2 years looking for our blue water dream boat, Najad floated to the top for the Swedish collection, we ultimately went for a rare Austrian built sunbeam 44, it ultimately fitted us better, only downside with an unusual boat we end up explaining what the boat is and letting other sailers look around on our travels. There are many fantastic blue boats out there for most budgets, build quality and simplicity win, mechanical cable steering and mechanical fuel injection with no ecu can be a beautiful thing in remote locations when things break and they do break, I fully agree size isn’t always king, check out the many blue water journeys made by owners of Vancouver 28 s, keep the videos coming it’s a fantastic resource
We own a Najad 380 from 2005. I am absolutely in love with it. The build quality is second to none. Adn it has glued teak dekcs in stead of screwed, which is very rare for Najads.
$200 is my limit, but I'll come up with the balance. Love it
Spectacular boat James! Never heard of it before but adding it to my dream boat list
Thank you for another excellent video in your newer format.
I've scanned some of the comments and the more negative (which were few) just show no life experience in what they're commenting on.
Beautiful boat solid in all aspects, what skipper could turn down that salon or engine room for a boat of its size? And the deck and cockpit layout are just about perfect. A very nice Swedish boat !
Good work James.
I have a Najad 360 and absolutely love it. The only problem is the space for guests. Considering I live aboard, the v-berth is pretty much a storage room so any guests are designated to the two single galley berths. Wish mine was a cutter but Im pretty happy with the sailing performance. It won't win any races but it will happily cruise at 6.5kn all day, in comfort.
I knew this boat from the RAN Sailing chanel. It was their previous boat. The only thing I believe I would miss is some more natural light inside. It is one of those boats where you are kind of closed inside, without much connection to the exterior, both with light and view. Other than that it is surely one of the most wonderful and perfect boats out there.
I suggest an additional approach to picking a size. Imagine quantity of everything you need: tankage, food, refrigeration, dinghy, solar, turbine, radar, all season clothing, spare parts, food, trash, navigation equipment, batteries, entertainment stuff, anchorage, etc. Then fit it all on a boat. Next what is maximum draft and mast for you. Now start making a list and thin it out vs your budget. 36-39' is small but doable with shorter plans. 40-42' will fit just about everything. 43-48' is extra comfortable if not too big for some locations for bigger budget.
I've been lucky to find a good Najad 373. On the water, it's the safest thing out there, and everywhere you look, there's thought in the design. They're not free of maintenance, but it's more fun to do on a well-constructed boat. Boat ownership still scares the shit out of me though.
I fully agree with this assessment. We have a Trintella 44. Dutch built but very similar in appearance and detail with the Najad 44.
Ours is solent rigged ketch, full skeg, 7 ft 2 inch draft. Shaft drive steering, walk in engine room with a work bench, slab reefing. Our perfect ocean cruising boat. the Najad has nicer woodwork but i can live with that
Great series of educational vids on non charter-centric +40 offshore sailing vessels, James. We kind of worked backwards to get to your conclusions. In year 12 of cruising a Perry Valiant II (AKA Nordic 44). Your predilection for Center cockpits is a little puzzling? The motion of an aft cockpit seems much more comfortable in a seaway and affords protection with dodgers biminis and enclosures. Center cockpits are located at higher elevation and maximum beam. Seems like maximum launch potential. Divinycell cores belong topsides, decks and dodgers. And the Norwegian carpenter who built the Valiants and Nordics never encountered a pound of composite below waterline he did not like.
So agree with you about boat size. The boats get bigger but they don’t offer more persay. What I mean by that is a 45-50ft yacht may have three or 3.5 berths and a boat twice the size may be twice the size but still only 3-3.5 berths. I’ve searched for a long time for a boat size that could deliver up six berths for a big family but they don’t really exist. Also I listened to a yacht architect online who made the point that bigger sail boats reach a point where they are actually ‘sail assisted’ motor boats (ie in disguise) and that the systems require power to operate and there is constantly a genset kicking into gear. I experienced this on a race yacht with a canting keel…. Every time we tacked the motor kicked in to provide power to the hydraulics and the whole experience felt less pure and more like we were riding on a machine. Meh!
Super low maintenance teak decks! 😂😂😂
I laughed as well
Awesome boat with Lloyd confirmed quality 👍🏻
I’m familiar with Najad because I follow Jeanne Socrates on RUclips. She’s the oldest person to circumnavigate by all the great capes, and is still solo sailing round the world at 82, in her Najad 380, SV Nereida.
Wow! I’m gonna check this out!
I agree with you with the Najad. With a smaller budget, mine is the 391.
As usual ames, you give a wonderful descrition of this/these Swedish boats the no I didn't know of. Thank you
could you do one under 100k. great vid .. as always good work
No nothing good will be that cheap
Great review. Loved it. Knew a little about because Malin and Johan (Sailing RAN) may have had one or 'took me' to the giant European yacht show. Then took us aboard a Najad 44 at the show.
Nonetheless, your sailing knowledge helps bring its design and function altogether.
Thank you!
I've been staring at a listing aswell with the white leather seat cusions etc. such a nice yacht.
It's worth remembering that there are three million boats on the ocean floor. They all seemed perfect to someone.
Beautiful boat! I have to say I'm somewhat obsessed with Hallberg Rassy, but would be open to looking at some Malo and Najads. I like the aft cabin layout of this one more than the weird split berth versions of the HR 46. I crewed on a wonderful HR46 on a Pacific crossing and fell in love with it. Keep up the fun videos, and I'd love the see a Hallberg Rassy one!
Pretty boat. Nice lines and lovely interior. I’m an old guy who has to keep working to pay annual costs on my Hinckley Sou’wester 59, so your reduced maintenance costs point resonates with me. Still, I’m too spoiled to downsize at this point!
Yep. I want it. It’s perfect.
I love that boat! The rockers in saloon are perfect!
Yes, the Najad 441 is a very nice looking boat that looks like it sails very well and fast. I'd consider one for myself and agree with all that you said but I'm a lightweight aluminum performance cruising catamaran with daggerboards type of guy.
You're rock in' on these new videos. Love that boat... close to Ran sailing...
Enjoy your videos. Was a broker and liveaboard coastal cruiser for years. I've noticed that your videos talk about what size and make of boats you person might buy for "X" $$$. But I haven't seen addressed the typical cost of needed upgrades and repairs, maintenance, etc ... especially when buying an older boat. This can come to $1000s or even tens of $1000s, as you well know. I only recently came across your channel, so you may have addressed this in prior videos.
I really like the overall designs of the Najad’s. They were on my list when we were looking but they were rarely listed for sale. That 44 would have checked all our boxes but we do still love our hydraulic PTO and bow thruster! 😂
Everything he said is correct. I will be in the market for this or HR in 2 years. If this boat is available then I would travel to see it. if you are in the market for a blue water cruiser, this is it!
Beautiful boat. Great review!!
pretty boat and as you said well edesigned and capable.
Najad-great boat. Have heard that the cored hull can delaminate esp in colder areas with seasonal temp changes. Something to check.
I really enjoyed your discussion on this boat. I had not heard of this builder before. If I was young and looking to circumnavigate, I think it would be an ideal Yacht to do it on.
Love this boat! Wold definitely want to have a good long look.
Captain James, The Najad look very nice. I am in the group that prefer a full skeg. Thanks for the info on this manufacturer. I had heard of them but never viewed one. Jim Rodgers
Centre cockpit is the style we have we love the space it offers down below. Our 34 feels like a 40
You mean Centre **Cockpit**. Centre Console is a style of small to medium powerboat with no cabin :)
@ yes thanks for the correction.
Nice hallberg rassy 👍🤩
My only disagreement on size, sometimes, certainly not always, there is easier access spaces to make it easier to maintain.
Najad is one of those brands you kind of know about, you hear great things about them, but somehow Halberg is covering their presence :)
Have you looked at the Jeanneau 41ds? Fantastic space inside and sails beautifully…perfect long distance live aboard and easy to maintain and fix. Great value for money, I had one for a few years and would recommend highly.
Beautiful boat, and yes, I have heard about these before, but it wouldn't work for me. I would need something very different. For starters the teak would cook the interior where I go so I wouldn't have it on any boat. Personally I would only occasionally cross an ocean and a keel of more than 1.20M would be a drawback on inland waterways in both Europe and the Caribbean. I would want mast lowering capabilities to be able to get under bridges and be able to replace rigging and lighting without assistance of a crane, so I don't want a boat much larger than 32 ft. Love this boat and others built by Najad so thanks for showing this one. There is always a chance my requirements will change with a change of environment, politics or climate. Cheers!
Awesome boat
As a sailor from Europe. How can I not know Najad?! Dreamboat. But I disagree on the teak deck being low maintenance. Very expensive to replace.
Always loved the Najad - also love the Sirius built in Germany
Be really fun to see you look into and critique the Freedom yachts free standing mast design as well as carbon fiber VS aluminum masts
i know the najad brand…and i think i’d rather this than the new hallberg rassey with its beam carried aft and 2 helms…gorgeous indeed!…id have to add a hard top and then it’s perfect for me…even the 39 works for me, perhaps even better..
great find , now get her for 200k
Absolutely, great boats!
Love it. Short listed.
Thanks for the education
You said that the teak desks are vacuum bagged, but there are a ton of bungs in the pictures with some looking loose. That would be my biggest concern.
Beautiful interior, even better exterior...
I agree, this boat is perfect for me.
i love that saloon!
I agree 100%.
Boats Najad, Mali, HR is amazing, but cost also huge money.
They’re great value second-hand in Sweden at the moment. Especially the earliest models. I just bought a 1972 HR, she’s pure perfection. But then I love old boats😊
@claremaccarthy7308 I bought last year in Sweden Gambler35 from 1984.
I like Najad 340 or HR 340. But this boats cost a lot.
@ That’s a nice size boat too. I think I find the Swedish boats cheap at present is because I live in Denmark and the Danish krone is 33% stronger.
Man thanks, love it!
That’s such a nice vessel.
It's a beautiful ship.
I could live inside this lady for a long, long , time.
That's like sailing RAN 2 or is it. Good pick.
Maybe! Ran sold their boat to Sailing Telaru!
Depending on post/upload schedule - they are posting their Atlantic (2nd) crossing - crossing back to the Caribbean right now. The captain also wanted to sail around South America like Zingaro, yet those seas are mad crazy - or worse on a bad day!
RAN 3 is still in production ... Tally Ho (Sampson Boat Co) boat (massive rebuild) was completed a few months ago... great old (circa 1911?) sailboat, modernized a bit, though still has classic lines!
Dat Rip Tide geauxing on in ur background iz Kool dude
Nice boat. A few things that are red flags for me are the center cockpit-it puts you in the wet zone in heavy weather-and its increased movement compared to a stern helm, which adds to seasickness Also, the Pullman-style berths and V-berth require climbing over someone; not a big deal for the young, but a pain for older people who have to get up several times a night.
Fabulous boat. Stunning and yes had seen them. They are perfect.
But out of my budget.
I’m looking at £100k ($125k). Moody 44, the 90s generation one is 1/2 the price of the Nayad and is top of my list when the time comes. But would love a Nayad.
Pay attention to Najad sister - Aphrodite. Possible to find with your budget in good condition.
@@tramp-pa-pam5422cheers
like all you work. since beginning
We have a Swan 47MKII. 36,000 lbs and not bullied by crappy seas. Doing a short run Southport to Beaufort this week. The Najad is a beautiful, strong and safe boat. It's a buy. Avoid the plastic fantastics...
Yes!
I also wach sailing tala ru which have a 1989 najad 440 I believe. Yes very nice boat.
I'll save you 09:35, Najad 441.
Hey James from 🇨🇦
Trading success requires technical analysis skills, discipline, and emotional maturity. It’s not about timing the market, but being prepared for it. Sophia Haney’s wisdom, daily trade signals, and my commitment to learning have led to steady increases in daily earnings to over 16BTC. Keep up the great work!
I hope this inspires someone to start investing today, regardless of age. I wasn’t financially free until my 40s, but I’m still in my 40s with a third property, passive income, and four of my five goals. Investing in the financial market was a wise choice. Thanks for sharing this incredibly inspiring video!
Diversify your income streams to boost your earnings. This year, I’ve successfully done this by investing while I work. I invested through Sophia Haney, the CNBC anchor who often mentioned her. She invested my startup capital in less than three months after getting certified.
I have been quite cautious to get involved in this specific industry, but I believe that this is the perfect time to do so. I went to a seminar where the speaker discussed how lnvesting in cryptocurrencies may result in gains in the near future of well over $4.5 million. I have to know which coin to buy with.
I invested across major markets and follow Sophia’s rules, a great financial advisor. My portfolio has grown by 20-30% monthly while my IRA stagnates. Her exceptional diversification skills have not limited my portfolio to my choices; they reflect her placements. She provided me with financial independence.
That’s great! Your investment advisor must be excellent. I’ve read about people who improved their financial stability with investment advisors. Can you tell me who your broker is? I have $500,000 set aside for the stock market to boost my income.
Wow, that is a really nice boat, I glanced at yacht trader and there none here in the states.
I’m convinced! But, there again, almost every boat review convinces me that this is the best thing for my imaginary voyaging…
Not too hard to convince you to go sailing. ;)
It’s perfect !
I am curious to hear what you think about the HH catamarans, specifically the HH44. All the best from Germany!
This reminded me that indeed there's no such thing as "the perfect boat". You had me going until the captain's bed, I can't be crawling out of bed like in a v-berth. Plus, I'm not a fan of the Volvo engines. Also, what's the use of a half skeg and how is it better than a full skeg?
BTW Fantastic video! Thank you for not doing camera spins while holding a cell phone.
There's a great story about the British Kiel Yacht Club (which is a British Army facility in Kiel, Germany) using Najad and H-R boats with novice Army crews to teach command skills. The boats were all but indestructible, even in the hands of non-sailors and rocky fjords. BTW proud Danes will point out Malo boats are built in Denmark,, not Sweden.
Malo yachts are built in Orust, Sweden and nowhere else. I live nearby.
@@Jazzoctet Hmm... Guess the owner of the Malo 34 I spent the day with - in Denmark - didn't know that.
I remember when we were in Moltenort during a sailing holiday in the baltic sea we saw many HR 342s out in the bay, it blew my mind!
@@MRMV483 And none of those soldiers (aka: sailors) had previous sailing or boating experience. That was part of the challenge. They did have one RYA certified coach to keep them off the rocks (usually).
Nice! 👍
Ran sailing has a Najad 440 after their aluminum custom Boat.
Really hi quality boats.
Thanks for another very informative video James! I love everything about it, except one thing - I want a boat with a full keel, enclosed prop, and aft hung rudder. But still with a sugar scoop for easy water entry! 😂 Seriously! Don’t you have concerns about the exposed prop in this design? I never hear of full keel sailboat owners sailing over ropes and getting their prop caught in them, but I do hear that problem from a lot from cruisers with fin keel boats. Your thoughts, please?
I'm living on a Malo 34. But Najad 441 is my d4eam boat
I think my perfect cruiser boat would probably be the Brewer 44, but I would have to change the aft cabin into a walk around bed.
Yes nice boat thanks for sharing/
SPOT ON1. Just two things struck me. First, the lack of a stall shower on a boat of that size is hard to explain. Second, not all of us have $250,000 plus sales tax unless we stayed tied to our desks. There are several boats of the same quality for under $100,000 which have the same build quality, seaworthiness, and style . Among those would be the smaller Naiads, Hallberg-Rassey, Malo, and Contests. I own a Contest 38s wing keel and her construction is first rate, sails great, with the wing keel hardly any anchorages are off limits, and she looks like a yacht . She doesn't have the preferred sugar scoop transom, and you are right on about the width of the side decks. But for under $100,000 she provides all one could ask for in a blue water cruiser.
I couldn't afford a HR or N. So I built my own. Hull length 13 meters, width 4 m, depth 2,25 m. Ruther depth 2,15 m full skeg. Depl. 17 tons. Keel weight 6 tons. Masthead rigg type cutter. No wood outside. Mech. steering from Withlock. Auto pilot Simrad/Robertson, computer Ray. Aft cockpit, winches from Andersen (EL56), (46) on either side and and one Lewmar 650 on either side. Heavily insulated made for going in ice. Deck saloon type with steering pos also inside. Eber 4 kW heater. Tick any boxes?
I have looked at them before and am wanting to buy something this year, I was very tempted by a najad but as wil be sailing singlehanded a fair amount of the time really looking for something that has all the lines running back to the cockpit… thinking moody or oyster
Moody DS is worth a look if you can find one.
