desculpa literally means "un-blame me" so It can't be really translated to "sorry" because it has more to do with how the other person feels about you, rather than how you feel about a specific situation. While sorry is connected with sorrow and regret, desculpa is more connected with guilty and forgiveness.
I used commas bc I knew it was neologism and un-blame is not a correct term. The des prefix has the same meaning as the un prefix in the english language, so words like undo can be literraly translated to desfazer in portuguese. The word culpa in portuguese means blame, so the origin of the word desculpa lies in taking the blame away. Forgiving comes from old english forgivan and could be used in many other situations, such as remitting a debt. Nowadays the meaning of both words is the same, but they carry different feelings. Desculpa can be sometimes better translated to I'm sorry, or to excuse, and it depends on the situation.

About the main meal, yeeesss, lunch :) Whatever job you get in Brazil, the company gives you one hour for lunch (it's the law). So most companies usually have their own cafeteria or you get a monthly ticket to eat a good lunch and still have half an hour to rest before getting back to work. So when you refuse a kiss from a Brazilian do it with a smile and just tell him that you feel uncomfortable that we will understand. In brazil we use sorry only if we actually have blame on what happened, for empaty we have another word wich is "pesames" (condolence).
