My brother recently died and I did not turn the body over to a funeral director because I don't trust them. I did the funeral myself. All a funeral director wants is your Insurance money. Then they bill you as much as your insurance will pay. They will tell you that your loved one was cremated and they aren't. They just bill you for the cremation. This is not the first time this has happened. What happened to this family, happened to my older brother and the funeral parlor director was arrested. We had a beautiful "Celebration of Life" ceremony, I personally oversaw my bother's cremation by hiring a Cremation Society that was certified in cremation. Doing the funeral myself and the burial cost me $3,500. Goes to show you how much they overcharge for these things.

They always asked if the individual has insurance so they can see who or what will pay for the services. I know first hand because the funeral home here in Birmingham, Alabama asked that question for Mama. The insurance company paid her balance off and they gave my Dad that was left.

Never ever take or tell them you have a policy. Tell them what you want get the lowest cost have them print and sign and then come back. It's kinda like buying a car. Get the facts and shop around.
I pay life insurance claims, and we never tell the funeral home the amount of the policy. We will only verify if there is enough to cover the funeral service that is quoted to us. We pay the amount on the funeral contract & the remaining amount to the beneficiary.

The only thing I've heard that is remotly connected to this is thieves who read obituary notices and learn the time of the funeral and go to the home of the deceased and rob them while family, friends & neighbors is at the funeral. I hate this ! , remember you don’t have to be a licensed funeral director to perform a whole funeral . Family planning, transport, embalming etc BUT if you have worked in a funeral home and have a licensed funeral information Thats all you need Some licensed funeral directors know what’s going on and some don’t until the company is being sued

I feel so sad for you. I have buried two of my children, and I cannot imagine enduring this heartbreak during the grief of family loss. Not enbalmed, not in the casket, bad smell.... How unbelieveable can it be??? My son's were each treated with utmost respect before & during their funerals, and as a mother it grieves me to hear this family's story of being scammed. The only thing I've heard that is remotly connected to this is thieves who read obituary notices and learn the time of the funeral and go to the home of the deceased and rob them while family, friends & neighbors is at the funeral. My heart is very sad for this family.
