A minor note about the mechanism: The packaging said the slider on the back of their heads were in fact balance adjustment levers if they didn't "bounce" up correctly or under/overextend the flip in the transformation action.
@@nickolaswilcox425 It was **absolutely** necessary not to mention fidgety. You had to get it juuuuuust right otherwise the figure would overshoot its own feet (not enough to do a double somersault which would have been **SO** cool) or smack the back of his head against the concrete. I think it had something to do with the fact that the feet themselves weren't weight balanced. As far as I could tell the weight of the upper body was negligible to the transformation process and the tab informed the figure how to throw itself to overcome the unbalanced weight distribution. I know on my two the tab had to be just a hair to the left of dead center otherwise you had two spring loaded Decepticon buffoons.
@@channelwoodgrange what am i supposed to do about it being locked into the far right and wont come out of the notch, sure i can take the head apart but i doubt that was the intent
@@nickolaswilcox425 Before employing brute force, I would attempt taking the figure apart (careful not to lose all the spring loaded parts) to get to the head, then using WD40 and a jeweler's flathead screwdriver to try to pry it to the left. I've not had it lock into position before, so there may be some kind of grit or plastic shaving wedging it into place.
36ish odd years ago, when i was but a small lad. I accidentally mucked up the stickers on Soundwave, and mixed up the stickers that goes on his wrists, with those that go on his gun, and shoulder cannon. 35ish odd years later, and thanks to Toyhax labels. I made the exact same bloody mistake. It just goes to show. You can take the kid out of the 80s. But you can't take the idiot out of the man. lmao
Fun fact, Twin Twist & Topspin are the most produced G1 Transformers ever. They also have the most G1 variations (being sold as Salt-Man X & Z, and Robot-Man X & Z in South America). While I'm a Twin Twist fan, I do like Topspin as Salt-Man X in Green or Red. Fabulous restorations Dave. Some of my fave transformers! Great as always!!
Loved how in G1 when they invented a new gimmick they invented new characters. Now they regurgitate the same characters with the odd long forgotten character thrown in the mix, or you just get a sea of Bumblebees. My friend had one but I must have been the only kid not to get one. I think they were off the shelves before I realised I wanted one, even though I was quite a TF fan in general. And still am.
Great video Dave! Twin Twist was always one of my favourite Autobots as well for some bizarre reason. I think his bulky design, simple colour scheme and cool drill tank were just somehow very aesthetically pleasing to me as a kid (plus he was a member of the Wreckers in the G1 comics, which instantly elevated him to cool status). As well as the proper G1 Twin Twist, I had a knockoff one I just picked up from somewhere like a local newsagents, that was red and dark blue, which I thiiiink is the same as the original Diaclone colour scheme. I think you can also get these knockoffs in oversized variants as well.
It’s shocking what a little soap and water can do for a “broken” toy. They all really turned out nicely. I honestly think I prefer the more animated versions like you did with the Runamuck restorations. Amazing work as always, Dave!
Awesome vid as always. Love these guys, I remember buying both from my Local Tesco with some birthday money back in the day. Still have em, still love em.
I had Twin Twist growing up and had a lot of fun with him, not a complex transforming but a cool dynamic one step. Managed to keep him in good working order despite forcing that mech open a few times heh. Always a treat to see inside and how to get inside toys safely. Toyhax makes reproduction stickers, sweet. Thinking maybe kids tried to force the arms to rotate despite the designer locking the arm position for the snap action, in hindsight probably a spring compliance could have done both.
I remember getting what was I guess a knockoff of the toy that became Topspin. He was molded with a dark blue body and red limbs and head. I had got him before the jumpstarters came out, I remember being very confused lol. Years later in adulthood I know the story behind the toys, and finding there are a number of knockoff jumpstarters out there. I recently discovered Fliptrons.
You could take the spare ones with missing parts and turn them into battle damaged display figures. Maybe make some custom stickers like you did with the x-wing. You could also remove the leg bars on those and create running or kicking poses. Thanks for an "edu-taining" Transformers video!
I do agree that they do have a certain wacky charm to them. It’s too bad that much like the majority of G1 Transformers toys, they’re very expensive to buy online, and hard to find in the wild.
I had Topspin as a kid and never had much a problem with him transforming as intended when running him on the linoleum tile floor in the kitchen or the dining room. The problem was that most kids (including me) didn't "play Transformers" in the kitchen. Usually on carpeted floors or outside. Getting them to work on anything but a really flat surface just wasn't going to happen. I remember transforming him by rolling the wheels back by hand and letting them go while mimicking him "jumping into battle" while transforming.
I've been asking for this one for quite a while and I am not disappointed! Thank you for doing this one sir. Unfortunately it looks like I'm going to need to replace that motor piece on mine. Time to start looking for a donor.
Hey Dave Very cool figures I used your prit stick glue trick, to fix a bubble pack, for my nephew's figure. What happened to your ads? I really enjoy the longer videos you have uploaded per week, also the shorter bonus ones as well. Happy weekend and take care🙂
i could watch this all day. Love to see even more transformer repairs. Have you tried repairing the wings on decepticon jets or combinator jets? The wings i find get very loose and flap around, but they seem to be held in by a metal pin, and im not sure how you remove it or tighten it up
I don't have G1 jumpstarters, but I may start collecting the old latin america-only Transformer Animated happy meal toys, that work the same as jumpstarters. So I am taking mental notes.
Twintwist is a drill tank & topspin is a spaceship. I only had Topspin since as a child. twintwist I found few years later very cheap complete even less then $1.
I have a nice one of each of these but watching this video I had the idea to make two more, but with all parts color coordinated. (One figure will be all blue the other all white. Twin Spin and Top Twist.)
Hey, love your videos. Wondering if you have ever tried a Trypticon resto. I am trying to restore my childhood one (it's in rough shape). THe shoulder cannons in particular are difficult to disassemble. Wondering if you have any insights?
Wow, I didn't realize they were rare in the UK. The whole region-based availability has always been something of a mystery to me.@@toypolloi Luckily I was finally able to figure out the shoulder cannons. My next venture is to figure out if it is possible to restore its original colors and buy some replacement pieces off eBay (nose cannon cover, and helipads.)
The Twin Twist & Top Spin that couldn't be rescued... maybe you can still put them in your collections as battle damage variants with some custom stickers.
Neat-O! Twin Twist was one of only two Transformers I had back in the 1980s (the other being Inferno), and he worked quite well, even with the gun in his hand. No idea where they got to, though. Have you tried assembling an all-teal or an all-grey Jumpstarter frm the various parts?
Do you know of any other ways to remove stickers? I need to work on my cat lair and the stickers cover screws. I tried the lighter fluid and it cause a bit of creasing when i peeled the sticker away
Why doin't you attempt to reproduce the guns somehow with your molding blue gel putty stuff and some other material to make the guns? You experimented with resin the other day. Could there be something else to make the guns out of, too that may be kind of cheap to acquire?
I don't know if its sinful, but somewhere i have a Twin Twist, i didnt know he was G1 and had started to paint him like a military vehicle to use with my minis
Do you think you might take a crack at repairing a g1 Tracks figure? I have one with issues in the legs and thete doesn't seem to be any answers online for fixing it.
@@toypolloi there are little metal clips in his legs that bend flat or snap over time and I can't think of what to replace them with so that his legs can lock into place in either bot or car mode again. Whenever you get to it I'll greatly appreciate it.
Have you ever oiled any of the motors successfully? I know you're not meant to use wd40. I've got a topspin that's in good condition and works but the motor makes that sound like it's straining
A minor note about the mechanism: The packaging said the slider on the back of their heads were in fact balance adjustment levers if they didn't "bounce" up correctly or under/overextend the flip in the transformation action.
any info on how that actually works and how well or is it just a useless feature included to irritate people

The rebuild for top spin was weirdly satisfying. Listening as I put together my new shelves. Thank you for everything!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I would say these are some of the easier and cheaper TF's to find at the moment. That might change after this video.
Great fix as usual
In the world of Toy Story they have erected a statue in your honour for all the toys you have saved.

Lighter fluid works on most stickers. It could be they stickers are just to fragile to remove. If they are made on poor quality paper this can happen.
