Starting the UNDERPAINTING | How to TRANSFER a DRAWING

  • Today we will use the drawing we completed yesterday to transfer onto a panel for painting. The transfer process will be explained in more detail than my previous videos. We will start the underpainting by creating a "poster image". This means only the shadows and dark lights will be painted in. The purpose is to make sure that the boundary between light and shadow is as informative as possible. This will place us in an excellent position to begin introducing value transitions.
    Also... I had to fix another drawing mishap prior to completing the transfer. The drawing mistake will be fixed using the transfer paper and only the more accurate (or at least I hope) image will be transferred.

    The materials used in this video are listed below,
    11x14” Stratmore transfer paper
    Brown Prismacolor Nu Pastel (The one I smudged on the back of the transfer paper)
    Faber-Castell Burnt umber pastel pencil
    Panel: 12x12” Mdf panel gessoed with Liquiex Professional Acrylic Gesso (2 coats) and toned with a mixture of gesso and burnt umber acrylic paint.
    Thinner: Chelsea Classical Studio Citrus Essence Brush Cleaner
    Brushes Used:
    Princeton Summit 2 Round 6100R
    Master's Touch size 1 round
    Princeton Select 2 Fan brush
