    Cymbidium Orchids will eventually need dividing and repotting. We show you how to divide them and re pot them to make more plants, better flowers and promote new strong growth.
    The traditional time to divide Cyms is in spring after flowering, some growers prefer late summer. As long as its not to cold, the time is not that crucial.
    It is best to divide the larger clumps into smaller clumps of 3 - 4 bulbs. The older bulbs (back bulbs) can be removed or left.
    Smaller divisions of 1 - 2 bulbs may not flower the first year after division.
    Trim of any dead or damaged roots.
    Potting mixes vary greatly, as long as you use a good proportion of orchid bark mix and the drainage is good you will have few problems.
    You can repot in a specialist cymbidium orchid mix or make your own try a 50 % pine bark and 50 % coir peat mix. The potting mix that is best will depend on your climate and watering regime. Use a pot that will provide a restricted root run, cymbidiums grow better with a confined root system.
    Do not fertilise for about 2 months after dividing.

    I inherited my fathers orchids in 2015 he loved his orchids & was very proud of them he’d have them out in the front garden for everyone to see. I have divided a few times, have given some away to friends as I have an abundance & every time they flower it reminds me of dad. I wasn’t really sure if I was doing the dividing correctly & your video really shows how easy it is to do, so thank you I can now feel confident & will keep enjoying them & remembering my dad, thanks JohnnyA 🌱

    Ah Australia. . .heaven on earth. Such a beautiful garden, and the birds. Thank you Johhny, I just loved your video and have subscribed. I have a passion for cyms. The Golden orchid displayed at the start is the very one I find most beautiful. The pink one also, just so. These along with browns are the colours I am going for. Splendid golden, luscious chocolate and glorious pinks. I just divided 3 orchids neglected for a few years and was concerned that I had trimmed too much root. I also hosed thoroughly all the old mix out and repotted in a bought mix and sprayed with Yates orchid fertiliser. But I'm relieved now that I see yours are similar after trimming. I'm not sure whether I should leave them outside or put them in the bathroom. . . sheltered Melbourne garden. 14° nights for now. Just in from Adelaide a large brown Khan Flame Tuscany Champion, 170mm pot, 4 flower spikes. Thanks for info not to disturb spikes by dividing now. I'm nervous in case with the move from SA it needs to come in. It's in a sheltered but not too shaded spot, need shade cloth. Also many new single growth cyms, 68ml pots . . I dont know whether to repot a bit or leave them be.

      @Deejaay83urj38 3 года назад

      Raul . . I'm not sure that's what he meant. Because some say it's most optimal to leave the large clump together. In other words, he may not have been showing how to reduce to 3 because 3 promotes better than the large clump . . . Simply that because people want to divide this is how it's done. When he said "3 encourages more flowers later" he was referring to 3 compared to 1. Not comparing to the original clump. I don't know what he'd say about that. I hope he reads this and answers

    I live in north Florida where we have hot, sunny summers and for a few months in winter lows average 40s (last night was a cold 29). I planted a lovely, adult cymbidium in the ground about 5 years ago, and it has never flowered. I would like to dig it up and try it in a pot. Do you have any thoughts on what time of the year I should do that.

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  4 года назад +2

      They can be a little shy to flower in the ground, best with a restricted root run, so potting is a good idea. Generally in spring after flowering is the best time, however if they are not showing any signs of flowering by mid spring, I would do it then. Also try a little specialist orchid, low nitrogen high potash type fertiliser, a week or two after repotting. Hope this works, good luck and let us know how it goes.

    How old a "youngest" backbulb can be? How long will it take for a thick green Pseudobulb to turn into a backbulb? My cymbidium has 4 small dry backbulbs, 2 huge green pseudobulbs, 2 smaller size and one very slim PB. Three of the green PB have sent 2 shoots each from their bottoms. I wonder how long it will take for those shoots to turn into a regular size pseudobulb? If you could, please, make a video about life stages of cybm pseudobulbs. There aren't videos about it in youtube. Thank you in advance!🌹

      After dividing we usually put a pinch of 12 month Osmocote in the pot above a layer of potting mix, and then plant the cym. this means the roots go looking for the fertiliser and then back strike every month or so. If you are just using back strike, wait 1 month after dividing and repotting

    i am not sure on your views.. of them being contained .. i thought they were an Epiphytic orchid that does not have contained roots could you explain further on this
    also clay V plastic pots which is better would the roots stick to the pots and does the clay wick away moisture from the roots..

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  6 лет назад

      One problem is over potting, so we like to use pots that hold the root system, however are not so large that the excess potting medium can remain overly moist.
      And although they are epiphytic, they adapt well to pots. They are not surrounded by growing media when they are grown as epiphytes.
      We have grown cymbidiums in both plastic and terracotta pots and have not had issues with moisture loss. It will depend on where you keep the pots. We have not had issues with the roots sticking to terracotta pots.
      We also have some growing in the ground where they have been very happy for a number of years.
      Some smaller ones are in hanging baskets, also doing well.

    • @johnnyAGardening

      You can do that, however eventually the clumps become too big and congested and this will inhibit growth and flowering. This also allows you to divide them into smaller plants so you have more pots of them, to give away, or sell if so desired..

If you divide and disturb the roots you do run the danger of setting them back in flowering and growth.
