The Diamond Sutra, also known as the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra, is one of the most important texts in Mahayana Buddhism. It is part of the Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom) sutras and is highly revered for its profound teachings on wisdom and emptiness.
Chapter 1: Convocation of the Assembly
This chapter sets the scene with the Buddha residing in the Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika’s park, along with a large assembly of monks. The Buddha goes through his daily routine of putting on his robe, taking his bowl, and going into the city of Sravasti to beg for food. After returning and eating, he washes his feet, arranges his seat, and sits down. This establishes the context for the teachings that follow.
Chapter 2: Subhuti Requests the Teaching
In this chapter, the elder Subhuti rises from his seat, bares his right shoulder, kneels on his right knee, and respectfully joins his palms. He then asks the Buddha how a bodhisattva should stand, walk, and control their thoughts. The Buddha responds, indicating that he will explain how to cultivate the mind and practice the teachings.
