  • Mike Mitchell is a drummer whose music defies categories. He incorporates influences from musical traditions spanning a variety of countries, time periods, and genres. He has played with everyone from Herbie Hancock and Stanley Cowell, to Kamasi Washington, Michael McDonald and Thundercat. I got the opportunity to discuss some of his recent work and new vinyl releases for JMI Recordings, including his process for recording a solo drums record.

If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

    Nice mini-stereo behind you!
SO, (I played drums for ten years) a long-time friend and I went to see Stanley Clarke at Chicago SPACE. I forgot to look up the personnel he would be playing with. I noticed the drummer and in 5 short minutes, I was SHOCKED! I asked my friend, "Is that Tony Royster Jr.??" Mike's banter with Stanley was also hilarious and heartwarming. Stanley would kid him like, "He doesn't have his driver's license yet!" I saw him and Stanley two other times. In '74 I saw Buddy do a fifteen-minute drum solo live. Michael is now the best I have ever seen.❤

Michael is the best I have ever seen. Try to catch him live, and sit as CLOSE as possible.
