Love Victorinox knives! For EDC the "Climber" is the best in my opinion. Anything above 3 layers starts getting ridiculous in a front pocket. I keep my Huntsman in my backpack with my Climber as pocket EDC
Felix Immler RUclips channel has great info on uses of the SAK. He shows how to mod them and shows other uses for tools that people might not know. The Huntsman is my daily carry. I added the Plus scales to mine to get the ballpoint pen slot. The pen comes in handy and was well worth the cost. I also added the mini screwdriver and made a hole to add an extra straight pin in the scale. I can’t imagine going out of the house without my Huntsman.
I carry the Climber, Camper, Mountaineer, the Compact, or the Spartan, depending. I also upgraded them all with the pen, pin, and eyeglasses screwdriver.
I have a place where I have my keys and my wallet and in the very same place I have a small arsenal of SAKs which I select for the "expedition" out in this interesting and weird world. Just saying. God bless you.
Been using a Huntsman with translucent red scales since 2006. Been using it as EDC, in the office, around the house, picnics, hunting, hiking, camping, etc the entire time I have owned it. It has never failed me and has helped me in countless day to day urban and outdoor situations. Highly recommended. Have given many of these knives away as gifts over the years. Can’t go wrong with this one.
got a huntsman with the plus scales. adds a pen to the mix as well as a slot for a pin. I put a needle in my slot for repairs. in my corkscrew i added a little screwdriver for my glasses. also put a small bearing into the scale on one side as a bearing block for a bowdrill (idea from felix immler). i try other saks too but always come back to this one.....
I discovered a Huntsman when claening out my garage yesterday - still in box. I will keep it with me now, and get the firefly too. Thank you for taking the time to make such a greatly informative and entertaining video. Melbourne Australia
Many comments I've read agree with my opinion. Too big means carried less. 2 layers is ideal. Quote: The most important knife is the one you have with you. I love camping, hiking, and everything outdoors. Yet, I often wear suits and tuxedos. So my rule is, if you can have it in a tuxedo pocket, and forget you have it, and still cut down a tree... perfect. The Victorinox Camper is my choice. I use every tool daily. In the field, garden, and work and house. Minutes ago I installed a new dimmer switch with no other tool. Yesterday I cut down a limb in the yard and made toggles to sinch and carry bundles of branches. And last week, it was in my tuxedo pocket, opened a man's beer after he realized it wasn't a twist top. I'm sure I used it for many other things too. But I don't remember everything I did as I mindlessly reach for it whenever a task approaches. I've carried bigger, and often had to decide is it going to be needed today, and you need it, when you leave it behind. 2 layers, is an easy decision. I suppose the huntsman could be an alternative choice, but the extra tools probably won't get used. Big blade, small blade, saw, canopener, bottle opener, reemer, and corkscrew, wire strippers, tweezers... I use every one of these.
On a daily basis I carry the Mini-champ. I love the compact size, and it’s full of features. Not the least of which is a pressurized pen. I just bought the Huntsman and I believe it’ll be a great addition to my ever growing collection of SAK’s. Thank you for the great video!!
Good video, my first Swiss Army knife was a Huntsman way back In 1972. It has the long nail file and the sharpened curve on the bottle opener which is what Victorinox did in those days for a wire stripper. They continued the sharpened curve on the soldiers model into the 1990's. Anyhow I have a special attachment to that model, but recently got a Farmer X model which is very substantial. It is definitely a trade off extra features for a more robust build.
Like you I also have the Firefly where the the toothpick would of been. I added 2 of the Helix ( orange ) Tinder's inside the cork screw. This way I have the rod and the tinder to start an emergency fire. For everyday camping fires I use a larger rod. I like the Huntsman for the wood saw. It's a handy tool since I have a backpacking wood burning stove. It's the Firebox Gen 2 titanium Nano. I can burn either alcohol or wood in it. By the way , the bottle opener on the knife has a small wire stripper area that also works quite well with the Firefly.
the huntsman is a great one knife edc. I do a tiny but mighty manager 2 in my pocket. it covers basic day to day tasks and it lives unnoticed. craftsman in a pouch in my backpack. it comes out for house stuff, art projects with my daughter, prototyping product models for work, and every outdoor adventure. the right sak is a superpower. I don't know how people get through life without one.
I have a few but my first was the pioneer which I’ve had since 1999. Amazing bit of kit! Now there’s a Huntsman, a Farmer X, a Mini Champ for the key ring and a classic for the house keys when I go out on the bike or for a run.
This is such a cool video!! I appreciate all the advice you're giving. I just got a Huntsman myself and now ordered some fireflies to go with it, such a great idea. Cheers from the other side of the pond in Scotland
Man...my favorite sak depends of what i'm going to do. They made so many different models , that you always want another one for another occasion. So i have about 10 VICTORINOX knives...and love thema all
when exchanging the scales get the plus scales. They have an extra slot for the pen (also nice for carving projects to mark on wood) and the pin. On some of the plus scales there is an extra slot that you just need to open on the edge of the scale. This would be a slot for the (manually shortened) firefly. I love my victorinox and go nowhere without it. Nice Video, thank you !
Good review! I suggest adding a Tortoise Gear helix tender to the corkscrew. Also the small screwdriver on the can opener is actually a 2D Phillips driver which no one seems to catch. Great for tightening screws on gear that come loose. The hook is good for twisting loops in wire for trap building in survival situations. Love mine.
I have the Rambler as everyday carry, Huntsman for camping, with the toothpick replaced with a fire steel and tinder in the corkscrew, just like yourself.
I carry different SAKs at different times, but I also think the Huntsman is the best combination of size, weight, and tool set for being outdoors. I have the fire fly and fire ant in my huntsman. It makes it a real survival tool or just a practical outdoor package.
I edc the Champ (same translucent blue because it has most everything including the magnifying glass for starting fires with sunlight and saving resources (ferro rod etc) and it’s a little big but I edc it in a small backpack with my Esee 6 and my Izula is in my front pocket. You forgot to mention the steel pin, but you might not know about it. It’s located in the scales behind the corkscrew. Lift up the corkscrew and you’ll see it. 💪🏼
You mentioned not needing the screwdrivers in the field. I use them to tighten or remove the scales on my Becker fixed blades. They are slotted for both phillips and straight.
👍 Very good overview of my EDC knife. Thank you. A suggestion: using a file one can square off the front edge of the screwdriver/cap-lifter so that it will throw sparks from a ferro rod, the pressure is then such that there is no danger of the tool closing while striking.
Firefly fero...great tip. Never knew. For long backpacking I use Victorinox 580. Knife, scissors, nail clipper, and file for fero. All you need. Glen ("44")
Leatherman goes in my edc bag but not on my person. I totally get what you say about the weight. In my pockry I'm carrying and Vic Alox Pioneer or a Vic Ranger grip 61 with a nod for a pocket clip if I want a larger blade. I love the Victorinox Pionner by the way. If there was on thing I wish victorinox would do though is find a way to put pocket clips on their knives. Its whyI sometimes go for the heavier Ranger grip cause I know with my clip mode I can secure it in my pocket.
I carry two on me. The one handed trekker in my pocket. And the mini champ on my key chain. I collect them and have quite a few. Probably around 50. My favorite which is way to heavy to carry on me all the time is the swiss tool
A knife I have been using as my EDC for a while now is a Camillus US marked knife that I was given by my father, it is essentially the same tool set as the Victorinox Pioneer Alox, and since I have been carrying this knife I have been looking into getting my first serious Victorinox and I went with the Huntsman model, as some of my favorite vacations are hunting, fishing, and camping.
I’m in a very similar position to you. I EDC the Huntsman with plus scales. I love the alox models but I’m not prepared to lose the tweezers, pen and toothpick. There’s something special about the celidor scales.
Great edc. Agree, Would be nice if the big blade would lock. Been carrying one for about 20 years or so. Also, the blue color is great for outdoors because it's easy to see.
I'm based in the UK so non locking is the only legal carry. The huntsman works perfectly for me too. Small and light to carry in work trousers and useful out and about also. Would like a Phillips driver in addition to all the other tools to make it perfect. Maybe they could replace the hook with a Phillips! Good video and echos my thoughts!! :)
Lol, I'm getting one of these bad boys for my 10th B-day soon. After researching and watching reviews for different swiss army knives from Victorinox, I finally decided on the Huntsman. Thanks to great reviews like this one, I'm pretty sure I've made the right decision. So, thanks! :)
The Huntsman is my go to model in the woods, I have one with walnut scales so no tweezers or toothpick. Fo everyday I carry my Farmer X or Swisstool Spirit.
Love the Huntsman. With the addition of a wood|metal file it would be beyond perfect. I find the toothpick very useful, though, and I was disappointed you thought it's replacement, the firefly, was so problematic that you chose not to bother using it to start a fire. If you're "selling" the Huntsman (and SAK's in general) then please show us that the firefly actually works.
Nice video. I've been carrying for over 65 years. My old man believed that "a man always carries a knife". Including through school. In those days it was allowed. Up through the Army I carried a scout knife. Then for 10 years, an electricians knife. Then I got a Leatherman around '93 and carried it in addition to the knife. When I retired in 2011, I went to a SAK Tinker and am very happy with it. I do not like the corkscrew because I tried one and it ripped my pocket. If I upgrade, it would be to a Fieldmaster. I have a SAK with a locking blade but it sits with the others in a drawer. You cut yourself? Take a corner off of your Tote N Chip. Good Luck, Rick
Good video. Got some neat tips in there. I want to get a leatherman multi tool but there's so many models I haven't figured out what I want. Hadn't considered a Swiss army knife
The parcel hook is indispensable for making a rabbit snare from wire, I believe someone has done a video tutorial showing the process I can’t find it again, but the hook is way more useful than people think. It’s the corkscrew that has me scratching my head. Well other than taking a cork out.
Got one ordered in black for Christmas. It was tough picking. Budget and features being the major factors. Thought about engineer but went with huntsman? I think I’ll be happy with the it
I take about 4ft of paracord with an eye loop tied on ether end and then put it around logs as a choker and the use the parcel hook as a handle for pulling logs or bunched of brush back to my camp fire I've hauled easily 70lbs with it
They say, the best survival knife is the one you have with you, and the only knife that is always in my fanny pack is my huntsman. May i reckommend the channel of Felix Immler to the audience, the king of swiss army knives?
Thanks for the info! Really puzzled, though: Why not demo the teensy ferrocerium rod toothpick replacement with the saw blade, rather than bringing in a turnkey solution -- yet swapping in the saw blade for the built-in striker? Feels unduly contrived.
I have a collection of Swiss Army Knifes, verging on an obsession? From Swiss Champ all the way down to Recruit. Including Huntsman, farmer ×2 which are aimed at outdoors. A explorer, camper more as a city /everyday tool . We all switch from model to model looking for the perfect SAK? I tend towards the very basic Recruit or Tourist along with a Knipex cobra 125mm . If i need a bit more the Angler is my choice the pliers on the Angler is super precision. I rarely use the scissors, i know the scissors is excellent, however a use the small blade in my Recruit/ Tourist, getting used to using the small blade has made me abandon the scissors. So Recruit and Tourist and high days and holidays Angler is my go to . But all need my can opener/ screwdriver MOD is a must .
@@will5184 I have a few videos on my YT channel that will give you some idea . First 6 years ago ' victorinox explorer, huntsman, farmer, climber screwdriver can opener mod ' . Showing how after cutting off the can opener, it still works as a can opner (even better in my opinion). And a few videos a few weeks ago ' Victorinox Angler Black plus scales and modification ' . Showing a new Angler with mod . It is a simple mod basically grind off the can opener and do slight reshaping to produce a small flat screwdriver/ 2d Phillips that can fit into tight spaces, the can opener just gets in the way ,electrical pluge , conecting blocks etc . Have a look and see what you think .
Great video, it helped me decide on the huntsman and it just arrived. As the mail,an went to hand me the envelope he dropped it on the driveway. I’m a bit ocd so that kinda killed my buzz. Knife seems fine. Do you know if they are drop resistant to some degree?
I've dropped mine a bunch, and haven't broken it yet. Like I mentioned in the video you might want to change out the scales once every 5 or so years just to refresh the knife. Other than that they're pretty bomb proof.
After hours of research and a lot of deliberation when it comes to bang for your buck, the Huntsman is without a doubt the most powerful of all the Swiss Army compacts in my opinion unless you want to get into the full fledged behemoths like the ever popular Swiss Champ, XXL and XLT, Hercules etc. Especially with the addition of the mini eyeglass drivers or ferro-rod. You want to take it a step further and you can even add some plus scales and add a pen as well if you make the proper modification. Simple, light and easy to toss into a front pocket the only real question is why doesn’t EVERYBODY own one of these little monsters.
Does the tiny toothpick replacement not work, then? I was just thinking it might be a good idea to replace my toothpick since I never use it anyway, but then you grabbed something else to start the fire with...
Watch Felix use the saw by holding the saw at tinder level, supporting on the stump with your hand and across your tinder and drawing the fire fly or a rod across the back of the saw. Concentrates the sparks much better into the tinder. Watch felix’s video, my explanation is confusing lol
I love my Huntsman, been with me since my teenage years...I'm 49 now and still edc-ing the same exact tool. Nice video.
Love Victorinox knives! For EDC the "Climber" is the best in my opinion. Anything above 3 layers starts getting ridiculous in a front pocket. I keep my Huntsman in my backpack with my Climber as pocket EDC
Agreed. You just don’t need the saw in EDC.
Love the huntsman! Got one for my 10th birthday, I'm 43 now and still use it everyday.
😎👌NZ
Same here. I'm 44

They say, the best survival knife is the one you have with you, and the only knife that is always in my fanny pack is my huntsman. May i reckommend the channel of Felix Immler to the audience, the king of swiss army knives?
Use parcel hook as tent spike puller
I like the eBay tip
I have three Huntsmans, but I like Mountaineer better, especially for a city
Thanks for the info! Really puzzled, though:
Why not demo the teensy ferrocerium rod toothpick replacement with the saw blade, rather than bringing in a turnkey solution -- yet swapping in the saw blade for the built-in striker? Feels unduly contrived.
Because the fero-toothpicks are expensive. I've tested them and they work...if you're skilled.
thanks for your video,
I have a collection of Swiss Army Knifes, verging on an obsession?
What can opener screwdriver mod? Sounds interesting
Cool video mate
Simple, light and easy to toss into a front pocket the only real question is why doesn’t EVERYBODY own one of these little monsters.
the huntsman is my go to SAK i have 4 in yellow,,
😀😀 fieldmaster same knife just has a Phillips screwdriver nice view I did a review on it just the other day
Does the tiny toothpick replacement not work, then? I was just thinking it might be a good idea to replace my toothpick since I never use it anyway, but then you grabbed something else to start the fire with...
It does but you might not want to risk breaking it since it is for emergencies
It works, but expensive and only good for 1 or 2 uses. I don't use it unless it's an emergency
Watch Felix use the saw by holding the saw at tinder level, supporting on the stump with your hand and across your tinder and drawing the fire fly or a rod across the back of the saw. Concentrates the sparks much better into the tinder. Watch felix’s video, my explanation is confusing lol
Got a huntsman as well but came with Phillips head screwdriver instead of corkscrew
Then my friend you possess a Victorinox Fieldmaster. I'm sure they will change the name in the future to Fieldsharer LOL. Great tool, enjoy.
Been carrying SAK for over 25 years. Spartan but looking seriously at the Huntsman…… hmmmmmm?
This is a great review.
I love that model it's the best!!
