As it began to rain, we decided to stay inside.
While I was taking a walk around the park, I found a beautiful rainbow.
When I got the letter from my best friend, I couldn't help crying.

I think both can work / as and when in the last sentence
'when' is clear and 'as' could be good if you didn't expect a letter from your friend
Thank you and let's have a great week

We made a decision to stay indoors as it started to rain.
= We decided to stay indoors as it started to rain.
= Both sentences are grammatically correct, but the second one is more concise and direct, I think.
Thank you and have a great day
