    many DJ's lack the knowledge even though they might be great DJ's in the technical term, they dont know where to take a set if they need to weave into some rock or some latin, or some electronic music. Having that knowledge and musical education opens up the doors to great "open format djing".

    lol at all the comments. this is a candid discussion with everyone giving their opinion. you don't have to agree one way or the other but it's an honest discussion that DJs have all the time.

    I though open format is base on playing different type of genre as long as you can read the crowd and play to please that crowd. Open format = to play what ever gets the crowd going.

    open format: listen to AM. That's open format. No rules. Lots of risky mixes. All while still rocking the dancefloor.

    I get why this needs to be edited but that beep is a bit much.

    Simply put, an Open-Format DJ (or Multi-Genre DJ) is a DJ who will perform a mix (or set) based upon:
    1-One specific genre of music you request;
    2-Several types of music chosen by you; or
    3-A mix of genres of the DJ’s choosing - for those who would rather leave the music selection in the hands of the expert!

      I hear what hes saying, but to me open format is exactly what it says. You can play whatever you want. Many open format DJ's also play Pop and a little of everything else.

    Open format is the politically correct way of convincing a millennial club owner or promoter know you're not going to blast "hood shit" in his ears all night . . . I'm an "Open Format" DJ depending on who wants to know - if a hood promoter wants to book me, that sh*t goes out the window LOL if the potential client in front of me is rocking a torn $125 European branded t-shirt and drinking a mocha latte . . . I'm OPEN motherf*cking FORMAT ya dig? :D

    EDM is a general term for any music which predominant or base sound was created with electronic devices and it follow that flow in the sound. There are to much danm genre and sub genre. Let keep it simple please.

    EDM is Avici, David Guetta, Festival cookie cutter type stuff. House has roots that go back to Disco and soul from the 70's. Open format (IMO) takes the most skill as far as musical knowledge and actual mixing! (NOT pre edited transition tracks) I'm talking taking that party on a rollercoaster time machine! That shit is HARD. If you can learn that and learn it well, you can mix anything under the sun. I'm a house head all the way, Just recently started getting serious about Open format and taking the art in that direction. Either way you look at it it's only other Djs' that notice your "style" of mixing... The crowd could care less, as long as you rockin' the party. just my 2 cents.

    I consider myself open format because the variety I can play. I hate mashups. I don't wanna hear a Migos song turned into an EDM mashup. I only used to hear mobile djs considering themselves as open format and they didn't really do hip hop like that. But I do get the clubs using the term to say we play everything. I know plenty hip hop djs that aren't open format.

    I don't think Open format and Mashup are synonymous.... an open format dj will go through various tempos and genres including hip hop he isn't limited to just hop hop. In the Caribbean we have to play music specific to our islands... Plus Dancehall, soca, reggae/culture, rap/trap/hiphop/rnb, mainstream music, top 40 dance stuff, edm and house and tower and all the other things. I've opened for guys who only Played edm all night with like one or two small hip hop segments... Then you have a DJ Konflikt or Joe Maz who go from Black Betty to Heads will roll to Finally the herbs come around (collie budz) etc because the crowd is so diverse you have to open up the format of your set to include something for everyone. It isn't just a cover up for hip hop to me but a real sign that you will be exposed to a wide spectrum of music.

    @ 0:41 ...That moment U just shake your mf head. @6:42 Mash up? dafuq is Crooked talking about? Open Format hasn't been around? You might wanna look at clubs and dj's that played the Scene in the 70' 80's and 90's... They played everything. I'm ok with opinions but that sounds like youth talk. "Mash ups" que Mash ups...#djrtnyc
