A) This horse is not being abused. She is being medically tested so as to ensure that she is NOT abused by racing if she has a breathing disorder. B) She is not being forced to go too fast for too long. This is less work than she would normally do in a normal training session. It's well within her capabilities. C) She is being held with tight leads because she is a trained athlete who can travel a lot faster than this treadmill if she decided to do so -- which could endanger her. D) The whip is only used for encouragement the way a baton is used to conduct an orchestra. In this case, because she is not on the track with a driver and other horses around, tapping her with the stick, keeps her mind on what she is doing and helps the vet determine, as she accelerates, if her airway is working properly. If it were not, the test would be stopped. E) She is bred to be a pacer, but sometimes pacers opt to trot when they're not in a competitive situation or they are going slow or asked to go at full speed. Having hobbles on her actually HELPS to ensure that she doesn't lose her footing and fall - HOBBLES DO NOT HURT HER. If they HURT, she would kick them off and keep kicking until she destroyed the entire room. Yes -- she could easily do that if she was being hurt or annoyed. Hobbles do not FORCE her to do anything. They steady her gait and help to make the medical test accurate. No one HURT this mare in any way. Listen, harness racing is not a business like a circus where lions and tigers and elephants often endure cruel training techniques. These are equine athletes who are trained pretty much like kids who go to school for track and field. Believe me, if they do not like the game, or they don't want to race, they will NOT do it. They will refuse to jog or train - they might even lie down on the track. This mare seems to like what she's doing. Like I said, if this BOTHERED her or caused her to be in pain, she would NOT do it and the whole place would look like a hurricane hit it. Thank you.
It's really great that this sort of veterinary equipment exists. Most horses sadly aren't considered worth the cost to be evaluated so thoroughly. @everyone who says this is cruel, unnatural, abusive and that the horse looks exhausted: I suggest you try that excuse next time you are in gym class, or at a chardiac evaluation at your doctor's!
I think this is good because it is for a good cause. And to whoever thinks it's cruel to make standardbreds stay in their pacing at that speed is wrong. Standardbreds are actually designed to pace, whether pacing fast or slow. They aren't designed to canter or gallop, they are bred to pace, and pace at extremely high speeds. That's why when you get a standardbred they often have a four beat canter instead of three, because they aren't designed to have a canter gait like other breeds of horses.
This video makes it easy to tell real horse people from fakers. This isnt abuse. And the horses are trained for the crop or "whip" and all those. Standardbreds are bred for racing. So they have the endurance. Im pretty sure if a human can run for 6 mins a horse can... And they are monitoring the heart rate on a board and if it went too high they would slow it down. These people are well educated and know what they are doing from experience
Nope! All of this is abuse. Not only is it being forced to “trot” but it’s mouth is tied shut with god knows how many bits. No horse is “bread” for shows or races. How about you actually get some education you dumb a** and stop saying this bull sh** about this abuse
We do this all the time, Barrel racers, english riders, race horse, harness horses ect. Its a way to see how are horse cardiovascular system and muscles handle the stress before they hit the track. We usually take them out of training if the speed of the treadmill and the MPH and heart rate can't handle a 40MPH Pace or Trot. We then take blood samples and scope their throat as well as Lungs to see the Pulmonary Pressure. Its all to save a horse before they get to a race or competition. They are worked out before they come to the hospital. Its well worth it, because if anything happens to the horse, the horse is at the best hospital money can buy.
standardbreds can naturally pace in the field from the day they're born. yes they can usually trot too but try retraining a pacer to trot undersaddle. some just simply wont
If you look, they have an industrial fan going to help prevent overheating. There's nothing cruel about it. It's like asking you to jog on a treadmill to see how good your physical condition is.
mysticfaerieluna my trainer has 4 rescues off the track they now do lessons there is one tall on she think never should’ve been on track he is tall and skinny but the do enjoy being off the track
Standardbreds are a gaited breed of horse just like the Tennesse Walking horse, Rocky mountain horse, Icelandic Horse, Fox Trotter, or Racking horses. There are two different lines of in the standardbred breed. Troting lines and the Pacing lines. Pacing is genetic just as Trotting is genetic. Unlike the other breeds listed, STB's cannot switch between pacing and trotting, which makes them unique. Pacing also is a more efficiant form of movement than a trot.
@Brownie25Maizii Actually they're checking for respiratory tract abnormalities, particularly of the soft palate, hence the endoscope in her nose and the laryngeal view on the monitor. This horse probably performs poorly on the racetrack and they're figuring out if she has trouble breathing when she reaches high speeds. It's not a means of improving her health, just of diagnosing her problem.
I think my horse would be like: Whut? I shall run while you stand there watching me and chill a bit?! And I don't even move an inch forward?! You are kidding me! *refuses to walk and rolls down the treadnill* :P
@FMAfanFMA 4 or 5 depending on who you talk to. I started calling my horse a mare at 5 but some say at 4 or even 6. It also depends on what breed you are talking about.
@welsey4e4 They are running a test on the horse to make sure they are fit to race. They touch her with the whip so she doesn't have an accident or come off the treadmill
They're sometimes called hobbles (well, the trainers at the track I worked at did anyways. Maybe it's more of a slang thing?). We found this term preferable over calling them "pants" or "Indian underwear".
Kph not mph, top speed was about 26/27mph. If the horse falls the strap attached to the ceiling Immediately stops the treadmill,or if they shows signs of distress the treadmill will be brought to a stop. The horses heart rate and breathing are closely monitored so they'll know if he wants to stop.
It's so annoying when people say that this is cruel. 1) A horse is considered lucky and spoiled if they have access to a treadmill. 2) Horses have lots of endurance. If people can run for 6 minutes, Im sure a horse can. 3) These people are not "idiots". They are experienced and have done this many times. 4) You see that board at 4:34? In case you haven't noticed, that's there so the people there can carefully monitor the horse. If the horse is in any way overworked, they would see so in the heart rate and immediately slow down and/or stop the treadmill. 5) Treadmills are for exercise. And if you think exercise is cruel, you're the idiot.
LozZzi26 They are putting this horse at the same speed and movement that they would if he was in a race. they are monitoring him with an endoscopic exam to make sure his air way and lungs are functioning properly.
WOW! So interesting to watch a pacer move without going anywhere-kinda neat!. They have radio controlled testers for that now so that the horse can be jogged or ridden on the track...
Trying to teach a standardbred not to pace is like trying to teach a horse not to run it is a natural gait that has been bred into them for years. You are trying to fight mother nature. Enjoy it, it is a very comfortable gait to ride
if you want to call anything cruel, call racing itself on hard tracks, or cutting the horse's nevers so it doesnt feel the pain. this is to make sure the horse is healthy. and fyi horses who are worked regularly and are in shape last longer than those that are overfed pasture ornaments
So the horse was trotting fast the whole time? And the speed read 43mph? Why wasn't he at a gallop by then? I didn't know it was possible for a horse to trot that fast.
The speed was 43 kmh which is just under 27mph. This horse is pacing, not trotting; the world record for fastest mile by a pacer is 1:45 2/5, the fastest trotter slightly behind at 1:48 2/5. The world record for fastest mile by a thoroughbred on dirt is 1:32 1/5, so the standardbreds aren't that far behind in either gait.
They can absolutely both trot AND pace. Yes you are right about the 2 different lines, pacers and trotters, trotters of course cannot pace as they are not born with the genes necessary to pace. But pacers can trot. All of the pacers I know are capable of trotting and often do so, I pleasure drive with my retired pacer and he perfers a trot. The pace gait is in addition to the trot. They just have an extra gait.
@lovetojump4445 I am well aware of that. For a good half of people heart rate of 200 means an instant heart attack, and this horse is experiencing an equivalent of human 420bpm. The question is only - why do people do this to horses?
RUclips's two definitions of true horsemanship: Forcing the horse in whatever way possible (if you can get away with it looking pretty or cool), and letting a bunch of horses run free on a huge acreage with expensive grass, trees, bountiful food, only getting them to do something if you ask very nicely with a little pixie dust.
What happened if it fell and you shouldn't push the horse, the horse can go as fast or as slow as they want to, that's cruel to everyone who pushes there horse over there limits on a treadmill
That's what the harness is for. It will shut the machine off if the horse falls. And I don't see them pushing the horse, he looks to be fit to do this. The horse is being monitored and would be stopped if he was showing signs of distress.
It's not mean, it's a veterinary diagnostic test.. it's the exact opposite of mean.. the thing they're looking for can only be observed in a horse that is at work.
Aww, what a good girl. I had a Standarbreed off the track a grand son of Albatross, my horse, Thunder, had the second fastets track time under his grand dad. But he broke his hock on the track so they pinfired it and sent him to a rescue center in ontario, then he went to SD, then VA. he didint pace though, he was mean and we could not train him, we latter found out that his leg was severly messed up and had to put him to sleep. Its a sad thing.
@277deb this is demonchinchilla on my other account, yes the whips is encouragement, horses only respond to the whip if they want to, some of mine go backwards when u touch them with it. And besides training 6 miles a day which is in fact a great cardiovascular workout plus muscle toneing, i also train horses 3 miles for endurance, these horses can travel more that 3 feet you wannabe horsemen
They are trying to diagnose him with epiglottic entrapment (a breathing condition). It usually is only seen at a certain speed. That's why he is being gradually increased and then slowed right down when they saw his airway have problems through the scope camera. These are veterinary professionals trying to help this horse with an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan
That horse is getting his exersice. Wonder what they were testing for? I hope that horse is all right now. Looked like he was having fun untill he seemed to be falling asleep running. So cute/
Ok, fair enough. I can't say I've ever witnessed that before myself. If done correctly, the hobbles are tight enough to encourage lateral movement, but loose enough as to confine the horse to a slower, choppier canter if they do break stride. Is it possible that the gear was too tight on the horses you saw? It's great hearing about horses that find homes off-the-track :) pity about the poor boy and his cuts though.
Yeah, I know the hobbles aid the horse to move laterally. This is not unlike any device that encourages a certain movement or frame. But I still don't see how that makes pacing unnatural to a gaited horse. It's encouraging the horse to pace, but it's not like the grossly exaggerated big lick seen on some TWH.
acually its not cruel, i use the whip to, but my horses love to run, at me and my friend ericas barn we use the treadmill for our rescue horses to build up strength, i love horses and i know were your coming from but this isnt cruel, and horses love to run, i know storm would do anything to get to run, some horses acually love to run and they dont mind it
Learn more about the harness racing industry before you make yourself sound even more stupid. I am a groom for standardbred horses (harness racing industry)...and the "whip" is used lightly to make them go faster. Harness racing is NOTHING like thoroughbred racing. How soft do you think the harness tracks are? Sounds like you have never been to one.
The description says this horse is being tested for epiglottic entrapment, a breathing condition that only displays itself when a certain speed is reached. The lady is making sure that the horse does not slow but instead increases speed gradually until the symptoms appear or he reaches his maximum capability without breathing difficulties. She is aiding in an accurate diagnosis. Over the ground, I used to be very concerned as well. Someone explained to me that the way the weight is carried in standardbred racing (pulled instead of ridden, and the way their pace works) the horses are actually healthier on hard ground. It's a pretty backwards sounding concept compared to other disciplines including thoroughbred racing:)
@STBFanClub Honey, they're not hobbles. They help her keep gait. The pace she's doing is barely the same as what she would normally do an a track, and they gave her time to warm up her legs. And as far as ridiculous goes, should I call out an animal abuser because you would rather let the owner just keep running a possible in pain animal?
It's so if the horse trips unexpectedly he will have something to hold him up. They are also monitoring his heart and breathing rate to tell if he's getting tired or to tell if he's having breathing problems
wow fast pacer. he is pretty. he did look like he was getting tired there towards the end. when I use my treadmill and do some running, which is difficult being so big, I do that too i start to slide back a little on the treadmill so I reach and lower the speed before I collapse into the wall. he can't do that. horses were not designed to maintain top speed for very long they are sprinters for the most part, not endurance runners. even endurance runners can't maintain top speed like that.
If you have a standardbred, you went into this knowing that there is a 70% chance that he or she is a pacer, right? Apart from galloping, pacing is their natural gait -- just like camels, giraffes and elephants. All pacers can trot but few trotters can pace. Pacing is a hard habit to break because it's not a habit. It's been in their blood for ages -- oddly enough - as far as standarbreds go, the pacing line ( through breeding of pacing road mares) is older than the trotting line. It has to be, since pacers pre-date Hambletonian who is the foundation sire of ALL standardbreds - trotting or pacing.
I truly find it hilarious when people think something like this is cruel to a horse. Baahaaa... If people knew anything about horses, they would know this horse is nothing but happy to be up there, doing it's NATURAL gait. you people are funny. ;)
the fact that this horse is being forced to pace is a cruelty in the first place .. it is not a natural movement for the horses body and i have had to work hard to retrain my standardbred in knowing that he would not be reprimanded for moving again like a natural horse. i am dealing with many issues that he has brought with him from the track and my prayer goes out to this horse .. there are other ways to test for health in an animal.
Funny, everyones is saying 'its there natural gait' so why the hell strap its legs up to stop it cantering? Don't get me wrong, i know it comes natural to them but i have a standardbread pacer, that i have re-trianed to canter nicely in 6 weeks! he now jumps 85cm nicely in canter, all 4 legged animals and designed to canter, just these poor ones muscles aren't aloud to develop to let them canter!
Fiona Jackson yes, pacing is their natural gait. I owned a standardbred when I was a kid. He was a rescue from the track. They’re trained out of cantering because they’re supposed to race like this. They can be retrained to canter with a rider, but most racing Standardbreds are meant to pace, not canter because they’re trained for standardbred racing.
Nah, I got to disagree with you. Personally, I've witnessed pacers keep up with the TB I was riding at three-quarter pacework (on a sand surface though). "It's totally unnatural for the horse to stay in the gait while going that fast." How do you know that? The vets are my track have never said that. Source please? "young horse still learning, being forced to pace" Pacers don't learn how to pace. It comes naturally.
this is abuse. it is time for human animals to consider whether they would like the same treatment that we dole out to the beautiful innocent animals which they force under their control.
You clearly dont know anything about hordes. Its a standardbred. They are bred for racing so they have lots of endurance. They also have a computer monitor and would notice if the heart rate was to high and would slow it down. The horse isnt even sweating. These people are well educated and have done this before
Lady Ellah horses aren’t just for beauty they are working animals and just like humans they need exercise to you sound really stupid and obviously don’t know shit about horses
For making it do what its naturally bred to do? Lmfao tf you on, the horse is monitored so closely, the strap attached to the ceiling will stop the treadmill on the rare event that the horse falls. Its a veterinary procedure to moniter breathing and heart rate this horse is in the best hands
GOD DAMN LEMME TAKE THAT THING TO A TRAIL RIDE IN LOUISIANA IMA BUST EVERYTHING ASS WHEN I GET ON EM CUZ IMA MAKE DAT THING DO THAT SPEED RIGHT DEA FOR A BOUT 1 MILE FASHO
I think its a great way to understand more on horses respritory and stamina. This is a very good idea and inventive way of doing this.

I love the hooves going click clack.

Interesting. I have 2 Rescue Standardbreds who are enjoying their lives Off the track and in the forest trails just having fun doing what horses do.
mysticfaerieluna my trainer has 4 rescues off the track they now do lessons there is one tall on she think never should’ve been on track he is tall and skinny but the do enjoy being off the track

@welsey4e4 they're actually doing this to make sure the horse is healthy. this is purely for the good of the horse. does the horse look unhappy?
Cross country horses go for 12 minutes at a time galloping and cantering aswell as jumping fences and not heard people say that's cruel and abusive?
That is so true!!!! I dont have a standardbred, but I have a Kentucky Rockey Mountain horse and he paces and trots.
@welsey4e4
They are running a test on the horse to make sure they are fit to race. They touch her with the whip so she doesn't have an accident or come off the treadmill
They're sometimes called hobbles (well, the trainers at the track I worked at did anyways. Maybe it's more of a slang thing?). We found this term preferable over calling them "pants" or "Indian underwear".
this is so intense to stand next to a horse running 43mph and you are not moving , this looks so dangerous what if he feels like stopping?

Go home. This is abuse

They're called hobbles. This mare is what is called a 'pacer,' the hobbles help keep her in the pacing gait.

I often feel dizzy after getting off the treadmill...I wonder if horses can be affected the same way?
Yeah, I know the hobbles aid the horse to move laterally. This is not unlike any device that encourages a certain movement or frame.
But I still don't see how that makes pacing unnatural to a gaited horse. It's encouraging the horse to pace, but it's not like the grossly exaggerated big lick seen on some TWH.
dont get me wrong, i wasnt trying to reply you but the one who said there is a twitch. i agree with you, i dont see any twitch on the horse either
The comment section is making me loose faith in humanity.
i agree with you i mean it's like a medical psychical test like us people do at the doctors
sometimes a lip twitch is most in some horses...like it or not!
I had NO idea fillies got that big. But how old is a horse until it isn't a filly/colt anymore?
So I have a stupid question, what's on the horses legs and what do they do/improve?
this form is actually better...i like it more when people do this...to me it prevents an incident or accident to happen bc its soo controlled
How long do u make them do this for
GOD!!! I LOVE standardbreds!!!!!
Who fast is that horse running
the horses were bred diff and the reason they wear hobbles is to make sure they don't canter but pacing is a natural gait
Cool horse
acually its not cruel, i use the whip to, but my horses love to run, at me and my friend ericas barn we use the treadmill for our rescue horses to build up strength, i love horses and i know were your coming from but this isnt cruel, and horses love to run, i know storm would do anything to get to run, some horses acually love to run and they dont mind it
The lady in the back with the whip doesn't need to be hitting the horse and they need to let him run on a softer surface it's bad for the horses feet
Amanda Struz or why don't you fuck off
HAHAHAHA..It must suck to be a loser like you. Thought you hurt my feelings eh?..hehe
No +amanda struz is right
The description says this horse is being tested for epiglottic entrapment, a breathing condition that only displays itself when a certain speed is reached. It's a pretty backwards sounding concept compared to other disciplines including thoroughbred racing:)
for what is the thing around his legs??
@STBFanClub Honey, they're not hobbles. They help her keep gait. The pace she's doing is barely the same as what she would normally do an a track, and they gave her time to warm up her legs. And as far as ridiculous goes, should I call out an animal abuser because you would rather let the owner just keep running a possible in pain animal?
I see that they have a sling to help the horse if he takes a funny step.
What's the thing around his legs?... :/
can somebody explain me what that "belt" is for? hanging down from the ceiling?
Why are her legs restrained?
they are not restrained, that is a piece of equipment called hobbles, which aids the horse to run the pace gait
Blake Caruana Oh thanks I was confused lol
+Blake Caruana actually hobbles restrain so...
it helps the horse keep stride
what's neat about them horses if u watch the head on when they run there legs looks like they are going into a circle
why is it troting wierd?
punchjumper3744 It’s pacing
I have a sb and we are trying very hard to teach it not to pace EVER
Lottshorse I have a standardbred, if he paces, so be it. It’s his fifth gear 😂
exelent thing.............i wish i could work in a place like that!
Será...q é da i que vem o Américam trotter é os argentino ?
I don't like how the hopples are that high up where the horse don't have the swing to it
chuck taylor they have to be tight or he’ll trip
there called hobbles, they keep them in their pace, rather than galloping or trotting :)
So true.
Ok sorry for any inconvenience
I truly find it hilarious when people think something like this is cruel to a horse. Baahaaa... If people knew anything about horses, they would know this horse is nothing but happy to be up there, doing it's NATURAL gait. you people are funny. ;)
Amazing how everyone in the comments section is uneducated.
Keep their stride at the same distance.
@Rocky0163 Why?
the fact that this horse is being forced to pace is a cruelty in the first place .. it is not a natural movement for the horses body and i have had to work hard to retrain my standardbred in knowing that he would not be reprimanded for moving again like a natural horse. i am dealing with many issues that he has brought with him from the track and my prayer goes out to this horse .. there are other ways to test for health in an animal.
Should have ear muffs on, crazy loud.
So basically to train a horse to pace they whip them to make them go faster but at the same time hold them back with the reins. (abuse/exploitation)
Can i get a job i love pacing horses i have a Icelandic
Nah, I got to disagree with you. Personally, I've witnessed pacers keep up with the TB I was riding at three-quarter pacework (on a sand surface though).
"It's totally unnatural for the horse to stay in the gait while going that fast." How do you know that? The vets are my track have never said that. Source please?
"young horse still learning, being forced to pace"
Pacers don't learn how to pace. It comes naturally.
Its nice to see a horse be able to get these advantages with this equipment BUT...there is WAY to much stuff on that poor horses face.
Blue Mykala it's what they use during racing. They tack them up with all the equipment (except the buggy) and do this. Totally normal.
i still think its way too much lol
thanks for the info tho
this is abuse. it is time for human animals to consider whether they would like the same treatment that we dole out to the beautiful innocent animals which they force under their control.
You clearly dont know anything about hordes. Its a standardbred. They are bred for racing so they have lots of endurance. They also have a computer monitor and would notice if the heart rate was to high and would slow it down. The horse isnt even sweating. These people are well educated and have done this before
You wanna see abuse? Go look up videos regarding illegal horse slaughter. Then we can talk about horse abuse.
Lady Ellah horses aren’t just for beauty they are working animals and just like humans they need exercise to you sound really stupid and obviously don’t know shit about horses
Hell that’s a wonder they did not kill it
For making it do what its naturally bred to do? Lmfao tf you on, the horse is monitored so closely, the strap attached to the ceiling will stop the treadmill on the rare event that the horse falls. Its a veterinary procedure to moniter breathing and heart rate this horse is in the best hands
i dont think horse treadmills are crule i but gosh i think they worked her a bit to hard!!
@Briks236 he wont, see the stuff around him ? -_-
natural lofl! when do you see a wild horse pacing? plus if its so fucking natural why do they use hobbles?
GOD DAMN LEMME TAKE THAT THING TO A TRAIL RIDE IN LOUISIANA IMA BUST EVERYTHING ASS WHEN I GET ON EM CUZ IMA MAKE DAT THING DO THAT SPEED RIGHT DEA FOR A BOUT 1 MILE FASHO
