This is a great place to start! However the video is showing improper sizing and placement of the harnesses and belts all over the place. Most of the companies have really good customer service that can help you out with that though!
If the dog is running beside or behind the runner for the whole run, it is not canicross. Which isn't a bad thing necessarily. It's just a different thing. Nothing annoys a canicrosser more than seeing someone dragging their dog behind them and calling it canicross. Commands for behind or beside is great for a technical trail where you need to be able to place your feet carefully, but canicross is for leading and pulling.
Professionals love the Non-Stop Harness because it rests low. The pulling point provides a great lifting motion when the dog pulls. To keep you fast and on your feet. The higher the belt is, the more likely its going to injure your back or pull you over.
Something not mentioned in this video is to start on the single track trails! You will find your dog wants to naturally follow the path and it can help keep your dog moving forward, rather than pulling off to the side as seen in this video.

What do you think of the howling dog alaska harness shown in this video, or the howling dog alaska second skin harness? I'm very interested in trying this sport out!

@@GavnerWinterLuver They are both great harnesses! We started with a second skin. They just don't fit my dogs quite right, even when sized correctly. But my dogs are such a weird shape for joring anyway. Lol

Me commenting again,. but it is sooo much easier for a dog to learn how to run infront and just....run, if you have a trail to follow, not just a big open space as you start teaching them. That's how I teach people to start with canicross; on a trail/path/road. Mush easier, and less of the dog running side to side checking everything out, not sure if it's suppose to be infront or by your side as it runs on a field or park like in the video.
A trail is so much easier.

What a beautiful way to spend your time with the doggo. Thanks for this very informative video. I'm interested in getting into canicross, I have two mutts who love to play and run around and I also live close to some trails and I'm also kinda fat. Unfortunately there is little to no interest in trail running with dogs where I live and gear options are very limited. Is it a potential hazard for the dog to use a harness that is sub optimal? I can get one that is padded but not one that is made specifically for canicross.

Remember to protect your dog's joints when doing canicross because it does put a lot of pressure on their joints! We use Antinol with our dog and it's great! She's happier in herself and faster!

Great video. I do canicross with my 2 year old Belgian Malinois in San Antonio, Tx. I’d like to start a chapter here but in the meantime we’re looking for competitions. Do you have any leads in Colorado?

Lots! I know the Facebook Group: Bikejoring Western USA will provide a lot of leads. I know they have a few bikejoring races coming up, and they usually have a lead on the other dryland sports, canicross included as well. facebook.com/groups/167050920622735/
