My use of the term spinoff isn't meant to remove from the series canon. The games are deviations (spun off) their typical outings. Deadlocked/Gladiator is indeed canon.

According to official sources, Deadlocked and Size Matters are canon, while Secret Agent Clank is non-canon (sort of, it is in-universe fiction). Though, if Secret Agent Clank was canon, it would be placed between Size Matters and Tools Of Destruction, since it both takes place in the Solana Galaxy and Clank is kidnapped at the end of Tools Of Destruction.

I get what you mean, it's like how Kingdom Hearts reserves the numbering of entries for the ones with the typical gameplay style while ones that deviate from the typical gameplay style in some manner - while still being a part of the timeline - get the subtitle treatment

Size Matters is known for having a lot of game-breaking bugs on the PS2 port, especially in regards to saving and loading. It's entirely possible to get through the game without experiencing these, but the fact that they exist and are relatively common is why people believe it's a bad port.

    • @FrameRater

Agreed. One of the best in the series (I'm always tied between Deadlocked and 2) and otherwise the story/gameplay are a continuation of 2 & 3, it's not like Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, All 4 One and QForce/Full Frontal Assault that do branch out in story and gameplay ideas and never get referenced again either. And the name doesn't count either as a point, as many games drop the 4 in the title (and it was Ratchet and Clank 4 in Japan too so it's not like it isn't counted as Ratchet and Clank 4 elsewhere in the world too regardless of the name when the rest is clear after playing the tutorial and watching the first cutscenes that it feels the same as the rest, and not High Impact games level of different for the series like the Future saga ones are [including Into The Nexus being Ratchet Future 4 as it has the same gameplay, characters, and story with the dimensionator]).

There are two theories how Secret Agent Clank kinda ties into the whole continuity.
Theory #1: This game is actually one special episode of the Secret Agent Clank holofilm series. I do not know how relevant Secret Agent Clank was after Up Your Arsenal as the popularity, kinda died down. Plus its very unlikely the public knew who Klunk was, as the whole time he's been undercover as a spy to act like Clank during the Q-Force missions against Dr Nefarious so the only ones who knows who Klunk is were Nefarious, Lawrence, Courtney Gears (she was his subordinate so it should make since), Clank, and eventually Ratchet.
Theory #2: This game takes place inside Clank's Dream while he was sleeping inside the Great Clock, which actually makes the most since why the game was released after Tools of Destruction. That'll definitely explain why this game feels very weird and how Clank envisioned himself as the Hero disguised as an Undercover Agent.
I feel the later of the two makes the most since.

    • @FrameRater
      @FrameRater  3 года назад +2

This being a dream would make the most sense since in reality, unrelated concepts have a way to find their way into each other in a dream. However that goes with the theory that Clank is even capable of having dreams in the first place. Maybe... it was Ratchet's dream?

I really like Size Matters because it exploits the most its RPG mechanics, compared to other games in the franchise where the RPG mechanics are very "slighty" and Secret Agent Clank tries to do something different with the original formula and doesnt feel repetitive, i think that its minigames are also the best in the series, while the original trilogy have boring minigames that feels very off compared to the actual action... You should speak to Jak and Daxter next. J&D is the sister series to Rachet & Clank, despite not making it past the PS2.
With Jak & Daxter, there is plenty to discuss. The departure from "formula" between J&D:PL and Jak II. The spin off such as Daxter & Jak X. And everything culminating in the awful conclusion of Jak & Daxter the Lost Frontier.
It'd be interesting to contrast these sister series as Rachet & Clank did so much better as its still getting new instalments.

I think the main guy wanting "power" was his own personal motive while getting credit was what he used to get the rest of the Technomites to follow him into that whole mess. And I like the idea of the armor system in size matters, the execution has some issues I think. Yeah, it's neat that the wrench gets some new features depending on your armor set. But how often do you use the wrench in combat? And if you do go out of your way to use it then you're wasting XP that could be used to level up your weapons, making you overall weaker as you progress further into the game, which makes the enemies being bullet spongey all the worse. There's no reason to use any combination of armor pieces other than what provides the highest defensive bonus. Which is a shame, the system is a hell of an idea.

Ah yes Secret Agent Clank, not the best game on the whole trilogy but at least it tried it darn best for a portable spinoff of Ratchet and Clank.
My main issue with that game is that Clank is the one that gives Ratchet all the cool moves and powerups most of the time, at least he complements Ratchet's moveset quite well, and i kinda thought a game dedicated entirely to this robot and its ability to transform i different awesome stuff could be neat, but they dont use him very well and that's the shame here, Clank has a good potential to have his own game but he ended up like Daxter having a run on the mill kinda boring game that's quite messy.
I still want somebody that at least tries at making Secret Agent Clank a better game by remaking it or trying to make it with a new angle that could at least make it cool to play.

Ok here’s a question what makes deadlocked a spin off but not up your arsenal. Both games massively deviate from the first two games in formula ( up your arsenal turning planets from interesting areas to explore to glorified hallways and battle areas and deadlocked turning planets into actual hallways and battle areas made specifically for combat both decreased in amount of importance of gadgets ( with up your Arsenal’s only having two new gadgets and deadlocked giving them to the bots ) and both also have some degree of focus on multiplayer. Heck if anything deadlocked fits into the themes of consumerism of the first two games brilliantly as an end to that arc while dr nefarious is just randomly there. Deadlocked is really just a refinement of what up your arsenal tried to do and made it work. I’m fine with deadlocked being a spin off because it’s definitely a different formula then the first two games. But up your arsenal is about as different if not even more so. Up your arsenal even has less platforming. I mean sure it’s definitely more then deadlocked but I wouldn’t call it a platformer even a hybrid one.I would call it a shooter that uses platforms to provide elevation or extra difficulty in combat encounters. A great example of this is the captain’s hideout. Magnet boots are used to restrict your ability to dodge on a side path and the main path has ice but it’s primarily used to make dodging enemy bullets more difficult. Deadlocked likewise expands on this with grind rail shootouts functioning similarly to magnet boots shootouts and a having flying enemies spawn around you when crossing groups of platforms sometimes to limit the players dodging options. The death pit isn’t really the threat it’s the flying enemies over the death pit that can’t be hit reliably with some weapons like the flail or mines. It forces the player to react quickly. In both these games the platforming itself isn’t the threat but the enemies around them. By comparison as early as the swamp planet it is VERY apparent in going comando there is focus as a platformer with platforms that harm ratchet if he stands on them to long the Nessie beast he travels on ect. Here the danger comes from the platforming and the gadgets tie into platforming by moving platforms or turning them on and off new methods of movement ect. The one new gadget in up your arsenal is legitimately usable as a weapon.

You know, I've played the original trilogy, Deadlocked, and Size Matters before the Future Trilogy so much, and yet there's still something to learn about each game and the little differences. Going Commando ( or R&C2 ) will always remain my personal favorite of the older PS2 games, but Deadlocked and Size Matters hold a special place. Deadlocked, easily the best arena shooter for the series, and also the most fully fleshed out system for their weapons ( At that time at least ). And the weapon upgrading! Everyone says it upgrades to 10 after NG+, but it does go higher than that, actually. Up to just about 99 levels of upgrades if I recall correctly, so over time with NG+ number eleven, the weapons constantly stay in use for return playthroughs, and that's rather sound design. Especially with the inclusion of difficulties in Deadlocked.
Size Matters, on the other hand, yes it is a terrible port. There's buggy messes, and then there is Size Matters ( Or, insert any other super buggy game here ). But, I think the one thing they may have done right with that game is the armor customization. Sure, in GC forwards, you just buy the armor and get its' effects and buy the next upgrade. However with SM, there's a little depth to the armor. And sure, the armor effects for most of the sets is pretty standard, as with the mixed sets, but it does give you at least that chance to swap up the fighting a bit. As for anyything else with Size Matters, such as weapon viability, it is exactly put right in the video. Sponges for days. Another small thing, I rather enjoyed some of the minigames in SM. The Clank minigames with the vehicles to be precise. The Mini Gadgetbot games did not really sit with me well ( Mostly as I wasn't really into puzzles that much as a kid ), but the rest was fun. It's fun in spots, tirelessly grindy in others. For SAC, I never played it too much, so I don't really have an opinion on it.

Deadlocked is a great game even for being more straight forward and a lot of fun even on New Game+ and getting all the skill points (though I did on PS2, don't own the PS3 version so no trophies) though for customisation, story and more. I never hate playing it but 3 feeling like a mix of 2 and trying to transition to Deadlocked felt odd to me so I don't enjoy it as much. 3 is just a carry over of 2, weapon leveling to 5 then 8 in New Game+, a funny but not my type of interest for a story and otherwise the Galactic Ranger missions are annoying and boring and is too much trying to do other things while Deadlocked better continues those additions. While I'm not big on the Raritanium from the PS3+ era games compared to the Modding of Deadlocked I do think it was an understandable direction for the series but later entries feel like you NEED to add them on while Deadlocked you don't feel that need to have bolt alpha mods or damage alpha mods compared to the usual damage, the effect ones are great and the others are so fun to mess with. I wish this was expanded upon, the Crack In Time Constructo weapons (only 3 exist in that game) seems like a somewhat continuation but at best it was colour skins, what firing type (think burst, single shot and so on types of firing output in first person shooters only in a more Ratchet way of doing things) and I forget the third one.
The Locking system is 'Lock Strafe' mode, changing the camera, the jump button and a few other things, it's suitable for a shoot and strafe playstyle compared to a platforming and those that don't mind manually pressing the strafe buttons (L2/R2) that the third person mode offers and is the way Ratchet 1 & 2 are, this was also in Ratchet 3 (first entry to have it) but you have to select it as the default is the third person mode, even in the Remake of 1 it's handy to use sometimes due to it suiting a shoot and strafe type of game.
To me Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank are good enough attempts at gameplay even if made by High Impact and whatever staff from Insomniac and other sources (the many armour set abilities and collecting them was fun or how they approached different character's playstyles/minigames) but nothing more than that. The PS2 port of Size Matters I have looks like a washed out almost PS1 era game (I'm not big on graphics and I know the PSP is as powerful for outputting PS1 almost PS2 like, but it just feels off in this port I always found, especially on Kalidon) that I keep for comparison to the PSP version (at least that's always the impression I have gotten from the PS2 port). I've beaten the PSP version 100%, RYNO and everything somehow when I think I was bored XD, so the PS2 version I just don't bother with as much because I don't need to if I already beat the game but I do keep around to see how it compares and only gotten so far into it. While yes the control/graphical limitations of the PSP are there, (though I have gotten used to other PSP First and Third Person shooters with the face buttons and find it alright and have no N64 experience so I don't know how that feels, and any that were for it like Perfect Dark I have with Rare Replay so it's not the same) but it's clear it was made for the PSP first then ported to the PS2 so the aiming mode is kind of there but the controls feel Ratchet 1 levels of controls with slightly leaning into 2's strafying in some cases for this later in the series released game/spinoff. Secret Agent Clank on PS2 I don't own but it feels better to play I find at least on PSP, not beaten it though as the skill points are tricky and the keycard extras weren't too bad with the 'cough' Internet, and the leveling of weapons is really slow which stops me from playing it (though Size Matters is also but I did get through it by repeating levels while Secret Agent Clank has so few levels you feel the need to try and level the weapons up in). SAC's rhythm sections do have a checkpoint (I remember once in the Casino one after the 1st Gadgebot appearance) but otherwise not really as far as I remember at least and they do go on and on and feel odd compared to the Ratchet 3's being shorter and a simple thing for Ratchet's disguise twice in the game but not 3 long sessions like in SAC.
And otherwise Insomniac's attempts at All 4 One and QForce/Full Frontal Assault are fine games but something I just attempted to finish in 'long' gaps, I only just finished All 4 One a week ago I think and bought it when it came out (QForce I'm stuck on the boss and even then don't care for it much to bother with the collectables or trophies and I know the online is done for it now) and wasn't big on it back then and now, solo (which I did to finish it) or when I did play it with Family when it came out and that was just 1 play session. I am the Ratchet fan of the family but even still eh, the spinoffs were interesting gameplay experiments but otherwise nothing more and just something good looking on the shelf alongside the other entries in the series that actually do get played. Also for the Future Saga it's Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty, A Crack In Time then Nexus/Into The Nexus. And Nexus is the most up to date and a good idea to play before Rift Apart due to the gameplay/themes of it fitting. Nexus can feel like a Deadlocked situation where they try to keep the same gameplay as the series though Nexus is really short like Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank only shorter with 4 planets, it's as short as Full Frontal Assault maybe Quest For Booty though more fleshed out then Quest For Booty. I get it takes time to make these gagmes and they made all the games every year, in maybe 10 months but honestly some are really average because of it. And when you consider the Remake of 1 being 10 months too and alongside a movie you see the levels of disappointment or 'how much were they going to make quick Ratchet games to fund other projects like Resistance trilogy (enjoyable though can feel awkward at times), Fuse/Overstrike (like All 4 One good with friends but is more generic then All 4 One for a multiplayer game of that time and published by EA so... yeah not their best first attempt at a multiplatform game in 2013), Sunset Overdrive (pretty good for their first open world game exclusively on Xbox then went to PC), I haven't played Songdeep or their VR games either, then of course the Ratchet 1 remake and Spiderman games from there. But honestly the PS3 era showed how messy things were, Tools of Destruction was good for the first PS3 entry of the series/Future Saga, A Crack In Time was a good change/mix of ideas and an impactful story while Quest For Booty, All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault reuse assets (like the Combuster so many times it's my least favourite pistol/blaster weapon in the series and I hated it in Tools and have more with it being repeated) and feel 'fine', both I stated above of course and Quest For Booty just being an end to the Pirate arc and just being kind of like a bridging game between the 1st and 3rd of the Future Series, it's really forgettable and just for ending 1 arc and continuing/starting up the other but obviously you'll get to those.
Either way a good collab with Badman here. :)

Joseph Anderson already made a great video explaining most of why I feel that way, but in short...
It takes the consumeristic themes and satire up to an eleven, it reaches the peak in gameplay evolution that was led up to by the advancements made in the previous 3, and overall the future series to come after was, in my opinion, extremely lack luster.
