Clairo Talks “Pretty Girl” And Making Chill Pop Songs

- There’s something special about Clairo. The 19-year-old Boston singer, who's been releasing little lo-fi pop gems on SoundCloud for years, has managed to garner a tight following. That fanbase increased significantly with the success of the video for her beachy loosise, “Pretty Girl.” In the clip, Clairo sits in her childhood bedroom and dances along to her song goofily. It feels pretty candid; she told The FADER it took her about 30 minutes to film the whole thing.

in a love/hate relationship with this vid: love clairo, hate the fader.
Jouquin Fox well get ready to hate both of them, because her daddy has connections to the fader which is the only reason youre listening to her oversell her boring manufactured music
What they did to the melon??
I KNOW FADER SUCKS FOR WHAT THEY DID TO FANTANO BUT CLAIRO IS GREAT SO CHILLAX

You’re not self made clairo like we all know now that you’re father helped you, but you’re talented and have a good voice regardless and I would have respected you if you would have been honest.
miong sena a lot of people would disagree. Even if you feel that way,you sound like a tool by basically saying plagiarism is ok if people enjoy it?
miong sena lol everything on my music playlists. Sounding somewhat similar because you’re in the same genre and straight up stealing and polishing a beat are two different things , not to mention trying to market someone else’s image as your own unique idea . At least other artists name their inspirations ,etc. clairo just wanted to steal Charlottes image and polish it for the mainstream . It’s more the fact that she leaves out the fact that Charlotte was her inspiration(she even admitted to using “nun lover” as the main source and basically stealing it for “pretty girl during a conversation between the two on Twitter . Admitting it to Charlotte only, not her fans of course ) she also leaves out the fact that her father is a huge industry figure who practically owns fader (converse owns fader) she lied about making the songs in her bedroom, when it was all made and edited in a studio (thanks to her dad) there’s a huge difference between finding inspiration in others work and stealing it , on top of lying to your entire fan base and trying to act like you’re “self made “

(sorry if I did some mistakes, I speak french haha)
Fuck, I love her.
I love Clairo. My favorite song is Pretty Girl.
I need a Polaroid of you dancing in my room
Clairo has one of those timeless looks. Edit her black and white I would still believe the photo is taken in 1975.
She is the farthest thing from "self-made" - her father Geoff Cotrill (marketing manager for Starbucks, Coca-Cola, and RUBBER TRACKS RECORDS) is the catalyst for her expedient success. ( I say this while appreciating her music yet I am more fond of honesty between the audience and the artist rather than a packaged and sold brand)
Side-note: I have friends and family from Florida who grew up around Geoff/his work credentials are a google search away. Also - PEOPLE AND FANS WILL FIND OUT ABOUT THIS EVENTUALLY.
Here it is:
I have no idea how Clairo - an indie artist whose music derives from Frankie Cosmos, Alex G, and Norah Jones (and any lo-fi vapor-wave/80s-90s beat) - has become more popular then her own influences. Oh wait - I do. Although I enjoy her music and I think she is an inspiring, aspiring, talented, and gifted songwriter I do not understand how her connections to the music industry hasn't been mentioned in a SINGLE interview. I am from the Boston area and I, and my friends and family, have encountered her father who worked for Rubber Tracks (Converse's record label) and various marketing/advertising companies. He has utilized his connections - and his extreme wealth - to place her on bills with artists (such as Tyler the Creator) who have taken years (..and years...and years..) to develop a following. All of her write-ups, interviews, press-releases, social media, and her own responses in interviews neglect to mention that her father (WHO WORKED IN THE RECORD INDUSTRY FOR SEVERAL YEARS) has clearly had an influence on her music career. Why is this? This is possibly due to the fact that Clairo has been branded - possibly by herself, her managers, or her father - as a "self-made" indie artist. Obviously this wouldn't be mentioned in the numerous pre-paid write-ups that her father has paid for in MTV and Pitchfork. I say all of this with the sentiment that she is talented, inspiring, and hard-working as a musician but I feel deceived as a fan that this has not been mentioned by the artist herself or any of the dozens upon dozens of interviews or press-releases that have clearly been planned, cultivated, and consciously construed to set up a false representation of an artist - or should I say - a brand. I do not think this discredits her art - I think it discredits the transparency between her management/herself and her fanbase. This is not meant to be offensive - I say this out of confusion towards the media. What do you think?
Don't believe that her father has that type of power/thirst for monetizing art for his own wealth? check out this link:americansongwriter.com/2011/03/converse-rubber-tracks-a-studio-grows-in-brooklyn/

"Cottrill (Clairo's father) made his first foray into the agency world after holding top marketing positions at some of America’s biggest advertisers including P&G, Coca-Cola and Starbucks. He had been CMO at Converse for more than 8 years before leaving that role last February in order to “pursue other efforts.” (www.adweek.com/agencyspy/mullenlowe-boston-parts-with-president-geoff-cottrill-after-one-year/130595)
Clairo's father - as I have heard from numerous sources from those who knew him in his youth - is an extremely conservative, materialistic, and self-indulgent figure who is fraught with greed, power, and a void that can only be filled with currency ( he is the teenager with a new red convertible every year - no this isn't an analogy it is an anecdote). I think this persona can be summed up by his career. He has been the manager of marketing for Coca-Cola (that's an absurd amount of money - not to mention poor morals considering how many people receive diabetes, cancer, higher blood pressure, etc. from the product) and Starbucks (a pseudo fair-trade company - hint: they are only advertised as being a fair trade company and outsource and underpay workers in South America) It is quite evident that he is exploiting his daughter's talent/mimicking for his own financial and internal gain (I'd assume someone with such a low standard for appreciating humanity/his own children is a little bit insecure about themselves.) Another rich person pushes a pawn upon the masses and they never see the invisible hand that did it. This is a pattern in both the music industry and the world at large.
(you have permission to do whatever you want with any of this information I'm not asking you to publish anything - I just want people to know the truth - however I understand your position as a possible benefactor of Geoff's wealth - however I am not assuming that is the current situation entirely for it is hard to clear the fog and grey area when a artist receives a lot of "hype". Thank's for reading. People will find out about this eventually anyways. ANOTHER INDUSTRY PLANT TRYING TO GET THAT MONEY
It sounds like you put more work into this than i do for my essays at college
I mean I myself have been wondering how Clairo was able to get so famous and well-known basically overnight. I thought "Hmm, Flaming Hot Cheetos and Pretty Girl are good songs", but the fact is that Pretty Girl got 3 million views the very same day it was uploaded. Yes, I saw that she had a soundcloud with plenty of songs that only got at most 12k views after a year it was uploaded, but really? 2 months after the Pretty Girl video, she's nationally known and is already doing shows.
I mean I haven't done much research on Frankie Cosmos, but I know that for a fact it took her 10 years to be where she is today and what took Clairo a year. Yes, Greta Kline is from a rich family, but she started from the bottom. I saw her in concert just last month and she was very gracious to play at theater venue. To me it didn't seem like that large of a place, but for someone who only ever played small shows with at the most 100 people to 300, that's a huge improvement.
can u credit the original commenter at least?
FezWa he /she didn’t write it....
You could at least credit the person who wrote the article,or source it. How do I know you didn’t write it? Because I know who did. Link the article
she deserves this I love her sm
she looks so different in this video
The song’s writing is pretty good when you realize the meaning behind the song. It would’ve been easy to just write a basic chill song with a message so obvious, but the message is subtle here.
Tony Styles It's obvious. I've gotten the message the first time I've heard it, huh?
You are the death of journalistic integrity. Fantano is not alt right. Get your facts straight.
Henry L dude this a a Clario video. Write the "I hate Fader comments" somewhere else

Am I missing something here? What's the story here?
I've been waiting so long for her to get noticed and im so proud :,)
People should look into her father. He has connections in the industry. Maybe she isn't as "authentic," Idk. just wondering.
gio132050 why do people put so much emphasis on this. They’re trying to rip her apart like she’s a bad person because of who her dad is.
Then we should be greatful for her fathers connections. Her music is incredible, Her voice even more so. So many people that deserve to be heard, that have real talent, arent. She seems humble and deserving of where she is so why does it matter who her father is? Im thankful to get to hear her and thankful she gets to express herself in a way that makes her happy. Love.
