For the Netherlands, there's both an online and paper-based application form. I would suggest to use the online form available at consular.mfaservices.nl I would suggest to set an appointment first as in a lot of cases there's difficulty getting an appointment. Before you fill out the form , make sure you already have all docs with you especially booked accommodations.

It depends on which country you're going to apply as each country has specific rules for means of subsistence. For my first tourist visa application via Switzerland for 14 days, I had a little over 105K in my bank account. That was a self-funded trip. For my visit visa applications for 90 days via Switzerland, I also had over 100K in my account but my sponsor provided his payslips and the embassy has required us to submit a "Verpflichtungserklärung" or declaration of sponsorship.

It's best to apply with a visit visa since you'll be visiting your family in NL. If in case you will be paying for everything and you won't be able to provide adequate proof of relationship, you can simply apply for a tourist visa and not mention your extended family in NL. As for the appointment, in the Philippines, the VFS accepts appointments even if it's in a different category (e.g. booked tourism instead of for visits). You can state that it's the only available appointment that works for you if they ask.

If your flight is booked in one ticket and you'll be on the airside all throughout, your wife won't need a transit visa.

From what I remember in most cases you cannot convert a visit visa to a work visa.
