  • I’m very impressed with the tones from these EMGs. It’s been decades since I’ve played through active pick ups. These are so well balanced, so natural sounding, and every position sounds really really nice. I’m playing into Marshall Origin 20 through a 212 cabinet with Celestion 75 watters and I’m using the Xotic BB Preamp for drive into a Strymon Timeline for delay.

    Killer playing and awesome EMG tones! A long time fan of EMGs.
    85 in the bridge is actually included in Steve Lukather standard EMG set SL20. That's the one he's been using since the 80s.

    I love that guitar. It is funny that you bought almost exactly the same guitar that I was looking at, at the same time that I was considering buying it. I ended up buying lots of tubes instead.

    Very cool.. I also like EMG's.. I'm building strat now.. It has a warmoth neck with Jumbo stainless frets and I'm going to be using an EMG 85 in the bridge and a 60 in the neck. I have a pickguard with the SA / SA/ SA, but need humbucker tones for the music I play so hence the 85 / 60 combo.. Very cool..
    Thanks man..

    Great playing there Joe! I'm eyeing this guitar. How long does the 9V battery last, and I take it since it's active guitar won't play without a battery?

    • @riffs66
      @riffs66  Год назад +1

      Thanks 🙏🏻. It needs the battery to function but the battery lasts an extremely long time. Just don’t leave it plugged in for days when you’re not playing it 👍🏼

    Fantastic tone you're getting out of that piece of art of a duitar!! Bravo 👏🏻
    Would you kindly share the pickup heights? Courious to see what Suhr dialed them to :)

    • @riffs66
      @riffs66  2 года назад +3

      Here you go! Distance from each pickup at low and high E strings:
      Low E:
      Bridge = 4mm
      Middle = 4.5mm
      Neck = 5mm
      High E:
      Bridge = 2.5mm
      Middle = 4mm
      Neck = 3.5mm

      Can you remember, were these heights measured whilst pressing down the string at the last fret or just as the guitar is? Great sounding pickups :-)

    Hell of a guitar man, and great playing too ! How would you describe the neck thickness, I played Ibanez and Charvel guitars mostly ? Cheers

    • @riffs66
      @riffs66  Год назад

      The neck measurements are: .800 - 880, and the shape is “Even C Slim” profile (according to Suhr). Compound radius: 10” - 14”. Not as D shaped as a Charvel and definitely not as thin as an Ibanez Wizard type.

    Awesome playing! Do you feel EMGs have a compressed feeling to them?

    • @riffs66
      @riffs66  11 месяцев назад +1

      I really don’t think so - not in a bad way, anyway. They are very balanced with each other and seem to do pretty much everything really well. IMO. 👍🏼🙏🏻

    I have the same guitar. Try switching the middle to SA-X, much better in between position.

    Gorgeous; thanks for sharing. How much pull-up (in semi-tones, perhaps) do you have on the recessed Floyd? Any reason for going for the Floyd over the Gotoh (other than the hat-tip to the original Pensa-Suhrs)? Thanks!

    • @riffs66
      @riffs66  2 года назад +1

      Hi! So, the cam of the Floyd is exactly parallel to the body, so I imagine there’s a lot of up-pull (I haven’t tested it’s limit 😬). As far as the Floyd, it feels and functions well, and I know the radius of the saddles has been matched to the fingerboard radius, so the playability (and tone) are great, but the arm/bushing felt a little “sketchy”, frankly. I swapped the parts out for the Schaller equivalent and the difference is huge, in my opinion: more positive contact and no “wonkiness” as was perceived with the OFR arm and bushing. 🙏🏻
