DId not truly embarass Canada, because we all know that Latvia, in the end, is meaningless in this tournament. In the end, it was just Canada letting their guard down, and, on the whole, these games usually have zero impact on the final outcome.
Latvia knows the formula to beating a team like this. Heavy defence. Hope for a hot goaltender. And play till The end. Yes Canada should have won but hats off to the Latvians. They played really well and did what they had to do. It was just barely enough and their goalie won it. Buuuut the goalie is part of the team. Sometimes this is the way it goes. That’s why it’s fun to watch
Latvia didn't embarrass Canada. Canada embarrassed themselves with their display of ego and lack of effort. Latvia simply took advantage. Imagine out-shooting your opponent by more than 2:1 and still losing.
That happens all the time in hockey. Don't kid yourself. Do you even watch hockey much?? lol. And yes, of course Canada had lower expectations of the game...and that is certainly a factor in why they lost. That's an often normal mentality when you're a high-rated team....in any sport. You are succeptible to these kinds of losses. In the end, though, these games mean little. The medal round means everything in these championships. Latvia already lost. We will see how Caanda does....very soon. Canada has won the tournament a number of times....after losing a game in the prelim round. Never any guarantees, though. There are some great teams in this tournament. Some of you people are way too obsessive about your own team.....and carry a chip on your shoulder over the other teams....that naturally have better hockey programs.
Latvian fan here. Our guys made a miracle for sure. But me thinks your problem was that your team underestimated us. Easy skate = easy win... But anywho, we will try to get to 1/4 finals. Thats why we are here ;)
Your goaltender stood on his head, and we have too many players from a heartless junior team, the London Knights. Go Rangers! Latvia played well. Keep it up, and beat those Yanks! 🇨🇦
The juniors are always the place for these kinds of things. Some of these kids need a serious ego check. Latvia played as a team and Canada played as individuals. The penalties taken in the third while Canada was up 2-1 were absolutely horrific. Still, hats off to Latvia. They may have been outshot by more than 2:1 but your goalie stood on his head and the players took advantage of their chances. Well played from Canada! ❤
We're very proud of the Latvian boys! All love here from Northern Canada and we hope they do well this year. No hard feelings about good hockey. Well done!😊
It was a really nice surprise to see Latvia beating Canada. As a Norwegian hockey fan, and as an underdog enthusiast, I am super jealous and super happy for Latvia. Congratulations!! I have said this for over a decade, and I will continue to do so. Underdog teams needs opportunities like this, or we will never see it happen, and we will see no global progression in the sport. I really hope IIHF can expand Jr tournaments to 16 teams one day, just like we see in the Senior tournaments. I don't care if Canada or any other power house wins a few games with double digits here and there. In the end nations will gain experience by playing games, and improvements like this will happen eventually. Only one upset makes up for many one sided matches. By only focusing on the best teams and igoring other potensial candidates, will take away opportunities like this. Well done once again Latvia. Good luck with further progression!!
You want other countries to get better. It's good to see our team get beat early. It can't be same teams winning all the time. It make Canada get better and they will win it now
@@BEAKER6868 ya. I think my feeling might be increased even more as well, because the Vancouver Canucks (the team I route for) has never won the Stanley cup and in 1994 we went to game 7 of the finals as the under dogs. So I always feel for fan bases that never win.
But Canada doesn’t win all the time and this was their second game of the tournament trying to get a seat infront of USA.Canada isn’t a favourite to win the tournament also.So If you think your nations team wining all the time is “boring” should probably just not watch hockey.
@@Lewis2931 well Canada wins a lot, so saying I should not watch something I enjoy because of an opinion is ridiculous. Maybe you should respectfully put you opinion here instead of arguing against mine
Embarrassing someone in sports usually refers to winning big, while Latvia won a really tight game by the skin of their teeth. Kinda toxic attitude to have to make it into an embarrassment if you ask me, and most Canadians seem to have taken it cheerfully too
Made me want to hear Grapes belt this out on HNIC. "I said it before and I'll say it again! God will get and punish you for you sins! EVERY!!! GODDAMN!!! TIME!!!!"
'Embarrassed' is if the score for 5-1 or 4-0. The thing with being the favourite is that you have to have the mental strength to play like you're that level every game. Playing to your potential is the toughest part about sports. The prep and lead up is set, you go through it like you do every game. Some games you start slow or you don't feel it for the first 10 minutes suddenly you're down with little time left or the score is even and the opponent has an opportunity to take "your win" away. Some times the opposing takes advantage of it sometimes they don't. On that day, Latvia did. That's how it works. It's much more boring from the inside which is probably why people from the outside looking in need to use emotion terms to describe it. People get more emotionally involved when you use terms like "embarrassed" or "arrogant" like one of the Latvian fans commented. I think the bravest people are the ones who places bets on sports. That or they're the most ignorant. You never know when the athletes just aren't feeling it that day.
I believe the issue with Canada is because they have so many high skill players on their team, and collectively, a high hockey IQ, they tend to overthink the play looking for the best possible play with the highest percentage of scoring. This, however, allows the opposing team to get set up offensively. Sometimes, it's better to just shoot the puck and hope for a bounce. That, combined with overconfidence and laziness can be a big problem.
They tricked us by letting us score our second goal They knew if they had scored the second goal that that wood unleash a rathe We should have tricked them with poor play with the score tied at 1 - 1 much earlier
How Canada worded the build up & post match commentary of this match is a big part of the result. IT's the World Juniors, so to basically say you must win or else it's shameful & the title here "Embarrassed" to a bunch of teenagers representing their country is heaping the pressure onto lads from a hockey mad nation who are fully aware of the sports history. For the youth of Latvia who are also hockey mad to hear how they will lose & be embarrassed playing is a fantastic "Gee-Up" & they only have their own personnel pressure to contend with, they would have been told to "Do your best!" In a 2 horse race to consider yourself already the winners before the start is an arrogance hard to alter mid-game. Congratulations to Latvia, who Canada now considers "Giant killers" & every1 else, the best team on the day.
The downside was I had to watch the Canadian livestream for this game. All the "Oh yeah it's 1:1, but Canada will win anyways" comments. Also can anyone explain to me the ass kissing that is going on in Canada? Commentators saying "This kid is the next Gretzky, next Ovechkin, next Kuznetsov." etc. Is it like a Canadian thing to build up rookies that haven't shown anything in the real top level of hockey or what? In Latvia we never do that, we just say that Mateiko is Mateiko, we don't compare them to anyone. Just seems so cringe to even listen to, I understand they're proud of the new generation of players, but that's a really shit way to build them up.
Latvia beat Canada and outworked and outplayed them. Where is the “EMBARRASSED” part? Lmao mega clickbait title tho. As a Canadian and a fan of the world juniors every year when Boxing Day rolls around, I love seeing great teams rise to the occasion. Your title is clickbait as fuck but I guess you’re a babygap channel so I understand why you need to use it lmao
@ buddy what part of what I said do you not understand? Latvia’s goaltender withstood the onslaught of shots. The defensive core of Latvia might have been beaten but the goalie stopped it all. Stopped every shot in the shootout too, zero defensive play allowed- one on one goalie vs shooter. Are you learning disabled?

Canada had 50 shots on Latvia vs 20 Latvia had on Canada. Is that outplaying and working?
