    I like the idea of heavy snow bases for these - it would really help with the contrast from a distance on the gaming table.

      I think it could work but overall they would need a cooler color scheme to feel like they are part of that environment. Even if it’s a bounce light or cooler shadows

    If you had wanted to do snow bases, I would have inverted the tones of the scheme, with the warms on top and cools on the bottom. I think they look much better as they stand because while the contrast from the snow bases would be great for readability on the table, they would look disjointed from the base, as snow normally casts cool reflections and shadows. Perhaps for an equivalent snow scheme, it'd be deep blues and greens for the shadows, with the highlights being red and yellow, with room still for the purple in there.
    As for the obviously airbrushed parts, a quick drybrush, some sketchy freeform veins or stipling helps with that, even some splotchy spots of discoloration. It would be another step, but for a centerpiece it might be worth the work.
    Definitely a really dynamic and evocative scheme, which is really inspiring for all the reasons you said. After painting grimdark with all the metallics and stark inorganic shapes, I think it would be really helpful to do a much more painterly (airbrusherly?), natural project.

    For the snow bases, I'm not shure if it would work with this warm shadow tones, but i would definitely like to see a video on snow bases. Maybe if you don't end up doing them for fec maybe do one for the slaves to darkness, maybe this also helps you to get motivation back for that army.

    They look lovely and have given me some ideas for painting a Tomb King army. Agree that snow bases would contrast nicely with the models, but also snow bases look a bit odd on the table to me (unless of course you are playing on a snowy surface). Tricky!

    Glad these took off for you. You guys were so fired up about S2D at the start of the year, and then....never really understood what happened, it had seemed like you found a compromise to push through with them. But you're clearly on fire with these guys, would ride that as far as you can. I came up with an army scheme I like that is reasonable to execute for my stormcast, but I have trouble fitting an army into my painting schedule when the majority of my play time is skirmish level.

  • @Jacksonmontyart

    If you do the snow bases I think the color scheme will need to be slightly cooler to make them feel like they are part of that environment. Like a cooler bounce light from the snow or in the shadows. Right now they feel like they are in a Cloudy overcast environment that rains a lot which I quite like. For another possible direction, making them look wet would lean into your environment you already have and could give you some really cool specular highlights. Whatever you decide I’m sure they will look great.

    😮 This is exactly, what I was looking for! 🎉 I recently did an airbrushing beginners workshop and wanted to incorporate and practise using my airbrush with my next project. The end result looks very moody and more than beautiful enough for the tabletop. The whole process seems very managable compared to some of your other videos, which excites me even more. I love your paint jobs but often end up with slapchop+X because I dont have a focus und painting and feel have to get things done before I lose interest and jump to something else. I decided against your "recipe" for the Slaves to Darkness for that reason. Although I reeeaaally loved the aesthetics. It saddens me to hear, that you put that project on hold and it weights on your soul. I sincerly hope you find a reason and the right energy to get it done one day. For now, I thank you for this video and for providing me with guidance for my next painting project. 🙏❤

    I feel like a tiny bit more of a highlight to add just that extra depth would be awesome...but they already look awesome, and adding that extra highlight would definitely reduce the ratio of time vs look by a ton, and from experience it's no small thing to keep everything looking unified post highlight when using airbrush glazes on skin like this. It looks killer, I'd be thrilled to play across the table from an army like this!

I think where I went wrong, is I lost too much of the burgundy/magenta undercoat with my grey zenithal and I ended up brushing on the shades instead of airbrushing, which I think made it much more opaque. I am with Ben and would go with snow bases. Would make them muddy though. That would fit the theme better and decrease the value contrast between the mini's and the bases. Have done muddy snow bases for my Frostgrave warband in the past and they came out quite well. I recommend going for a slightly wet look, like melted snow, those came out the best.

    Interesting, mixing paint into a texture paint to get the right color right away. Will actually be trying that on the model I am currently working on. Looking for a strong corroded look on the metal of my skeletons. Have noticed that when I apply the texture paint before priming, the different layers of paint can obscure the lovely micro texture of the texture paint.

I've been itching myself to try a scheme by Trovarian using liquid pigments in layers (bright blue and then white) to simulate icy snow. He did a video a while back on it. I don’t understand how you paint so much and it looks great too 😭 maybe playing games helps with motivation. looking amazing though seriously, I’m very tempted by the new FEC but I think I might wait and see if skaven gets a refresh and then pick between them. But I gotta start my first AoS army CoS before that lol

      It's my job. If I was just painting in my free time it would take a lot longer to get things finished! As for motivation, the biggest factor for me is having a great little group of mates that I game with.

    Love the color scheme here, I think it works extremely well. When you did the airbrush shade for the skin to color it, did you cover the whole model or were you zenithal "highlighting" the shade onto the upper areas and not hitting the burgundy underneath? Thanks!

    • @cultofpaint
      @cultofpaint  7 месяцев назад

      I didn't deliberately spray it over the burgundy as it won't really show up. But equally it doesn't matter if there is any overspray

    Snow bases for sure, I think that would add a level of contrast to the models especially incorporating some bright red blood dripping into the pure white snow. Fantastic models though, you make me want to get a third army and start collecting FEC.

  • @Speakhardly

    I gotta say, the snow bases would probably give some necessary value contrast. I kinda feel like these will still struggle to pop on the gaming table. Somehow these seem too dark, again.

      Thanks for the concern, but they pop plenty. The base just blends in and the models stand out nicely.

    Hi Henry,
    First of all I want to tell you that I am a huge fan of your work, videos and miniatures. Every week I look forward to Thursday evening and all the Patreon uploads!
    I love your flesh eater courts videos and used those for my army box. Ushoran, the new characters and a unit of Morbheg knights are currently on my painting desk.
    Regarding the morbheg bats: what color do you thing could be used instead of gore grunta fur for the bat skin for a second unit to have some color variation? What do you think would work? I thought about basilicanum grey, but I am really bad in being creative and also in color theory.
    And another question I have is: How would you paint the wig of grand judge gormayne ?
    Just Like the rest of the human skin bits with guilliman flesh? And highlights mixed in with pale blue? Any advice on some kind of „gore effect“?
    Last but not least do you think that for the abhorrent cardinal leaving the white crest/part of his cloak with the preshaded Jn Grey could work? Or do you have another advice regarding this miniature?
    Once again, I am really sorry for my questions. Thanks in advance and keep up your great work!😊

    • @cultofpaint
      @cultofpaint  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks mate, always happy to answer questions like this. So i think a dark grey would be a great alternative for the bats. The wig i'd do exactly the same, just gman flesh, i'd probably be tempted to paint a thin layer of gloss varnish over it too. For the pope's hat I would probably do a coat of apoth white contrast over the preshade, and then follow all the other steps as usual. Best of luck!

    Well, that led to me checking if any non-GW shops still had the box in and Element Games did (10+ stock - whut?) so new unexpected army for 2024 - I had the old Start Collecting FEC already, a couple of horror boxes and the endess spells for reasons that escape me now (and some crypt ghouls off eBay as 20 minimum size now and Start Collecting FEC only has 10). And an Underworlds Grymwatch which I don't recall buying either - at that point any resistance to Ushoran's Curse collapsed and when totalled up is over 2k so again, an unexpected army for 2024.
    Building them I completely agree that they look great but are not fun to build - very, very fiddly.
    It took me a while to work out why your scheme resonated with me so much - it is because they are the colour palette of a bruise - something organic and necrotic about that at the same time (which seemed very FEC to me). And also that grimness whilst also being "bright" - you have defenitely cracked that.
    As a consequence I think any bright white snow will contrast too much and be jarring, and shiny dark red blood as well...my minds eye could be wrong but it doesn't sound like a good mix to me, and grimy polluted yellow snow would probably be unpleasant.
    Anyway (almost) 750 points in the box, 750 point battle next Wednesday and still off work so I'd best get on with it.
    But thanks again as this was inspiring enough that I couldn't resist.

      Rattlecan it with wraithbone. Turn upside down and either rattlecan it with a purple or drybrush on purple. Then apply the rest by brush.

    Lovely scheme! 🔥Looks awesome and I really like it, so I might try it myself since I am currently building the army box! Your personal projects really make a lot of fun to watch and do motivate to paint some miniatures!
    Snow Bases could give the whole scheme another nice touch, but they already look great, so they don't necessarily need it.
    I do have some questions regarding the gorewarden:
    Did you paint his necklace the same way like you painted the bone parts in the video?
    And how did you paint the pillar/stone the gorewarden stands on? There seems to be a kind of "moss effect" on it?
    And last question: Is the body on the pillar painted with guilliman flesh like you painted the drum cover and the flags?
    Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to more videos in which you expand your army and especially I am thrilled how your Ushoran will look like!

    • @cultofpaint
      @cultofpaint  8 месяцев назад +1

      Necklace the same way, just added a bit of rattling grime to the tips.
      Pillar is just Petroleum Grey, bit of karak stone mixed in for highlight. Then starship wash, and a green oil wash (the mossy bits)
      Yes corpse is just guilliman Flesh, with a highlight missing in a little karak stone.
