- I can't get enough of the cool things that the Model 100 community is doing! Today, I'm taking a look at the MVT100 - this is a VT100 terminal that connects your M100's RS-232 port to a VGA monitor. Thanks to the great work of Steve Adolph, Geoff Graham, and other vintage computer enthusiasts, we can now enjoy vintage software on a full screen display!

In the early 90s I had a Model 102 when I was going to collage. I was the only person or nerd that had a portable computer in collage. I would sell my notes to other class mates. I remember a few teachers told me that this will be the future and a few other teachers thought that this was distracting and tried to get me kicked out of collage for it. I had to fight the collage to keep my model 102 in class. I wrote a ton of software for it and was constantly running out of storage space on it. And now its mandatory for a student to have a laptop. I just wish I still had my 102 I gave it away in the mid 90s right a long with a 3.5 floppy drive for it.
That kicks so much butt.
I just bought the microcontroller and going to try scratch building the mvt100 this weekend, very few parts required. I will be making mine composite only to use through RF modulator on my early 80s B/W set. Also will be doing the mod to the BCD port so I can dial a few BBS via modem.
Nice - I hope you got your MVT100 up and running successfully! I have another Model 100 video coming out in the next couple of days where I walk through the BCR mod, in addition to a couple of other things.
@@whatskenmaking Not yet, I have been working on it slowly, lots of other stuff going on (finally finishing refurbishing my shed/shop) Decided to populate all the ports with headers so I can add ports later on. I am at the power supply and testing stage. My plan is to get it powered and test all the power/grounds and then populate the socket program and test on video. Also have a usb, rs232 and composite cable to build.
If you’re going to use the BCR port you don’t need the RS232 cable. I found that you can connect the DE-9 port on the MVT100 directly to the BCR port without a cable and without USB power. The MVT100 will get power from pin 9 on the BCR port which is already putting out 5v. It’s magical!
@@whatskenmaking Nice, I will have to look into that. Not sure how it will work with what I have wired up. The main circuit is nearly identical, but the power supply has been changed, using an lm7805 and a few diodes to get the 3v supply, because in true homebrew computer fashion, that is what I have handy. Either way power is not an issue, I have a 24.4k modem, ccr82, tppd2 and a dmp 136 that are all grabbing power off the power strip. Once I add the 10" b/w crt television whats one more.
Ken, did you ever get the Ladder game working there? It's an excellent bit of ASCII Arcade fun! Ladder (v1.30) works a treat on my VT100 CP/M Model100 setup.
No, but I haven't really looked at it since I recorded that video. So, you have it working? Are you using the same setup that I am?
@@whatskenmaking If you are seeing escape sequences, wouldn't that mean that it is using ANSI? Does the MVT100 support ANSI? I have not tried it yet, but the VGA32 (ESP32 board with VGA and PS2 ports) has an ANSI terminal example that I think would work much like the MVT100, but does support ANSI.

Is there a variation with a decent hookup to a TV, either RGB or 15kHz over VGA? Composite is a no-go as that delivers trash output.
Can your run the Model 100 TEXT application over the video adaptor or let's say the SuperRom apps - like Lucid spreadsheet?
The built in apps all work over it fine. Not sure about ROM based apps but from the way I understand it works, I think they should all work as well.

Yes, there are actually a couple that folks have made. The one that's available which you can buy now is called the TPDD backpack - I have one, and it's great. You can pick it up from Jeff Birt's site - www.soigeneris.com/tandy-tpdd-2-backpack-drive-2
I take it that means you can’t use modem because the port is being used?
That's correct... however, there's a mod you can do to use the BCR port for serial communications - www.bitchin100.com/wiki/index.php?title=BCR_TTL_SERIAL_HACK. This mod is compatible with the MVT100, so if you do that, you can use both the MVT100 and the modem at the same time.
Does it emulate a disk drive, too?
The MVT100 does not - but a couple months after making this video, I did the "BCR Hack" (which I showed in another M100 video) and that allows you to connect the MVT100 through the bar code reader port, freeing up the RS-232 port in the back. With that port free, you a couple of different TPDD emulator options. I usually use the TPDD Backpack that Jeff Birt sells, but you can also go the cheap route and connect the serial cable to your computer and use an emulator like laddiecon.
I'm just a big fan of the whole idea of more inexpensive serial terminals! What do you mean nobody has a serial port anymore? I make a point of connecting the cable for every new motherboard I buy. Too useful not to have, especially if you're a fan of vintage hardware.

@@whatskenmaking oh that'd be cool! I didn't get to pick the brand of my laptop or it'd be a framework unless someone could show me something half a kilo lighter that was as well made and as Linux friendly. This Dell is as light as I could get with the dGPU I didn't care about and don't use (battery is already abysmal without it), but it still feels chunky, forced me to Windows 11, and Linux is pretty much poorly supported. *sigh*
@@knghtbrd I love the concept of the Framework, so I bought in early on. I have a 13" 11th gen that I've been using for a little under 2 years, currently running Linux Mint. Overall it's great, but it hasn't been without it's problems. The new 16" looks amazing, though, and I've had to talk myself down a few times before clicking the pre-order button... but the last thing I need is another laptop!
