  • In this video, Dr. Xeturah Woodley discusses racial battle fatigue and the exhaustion she is experiencing now with all that is happening in the USA around racial violence, gender inequality, and oppression. She shares her struggles with bias and discrimination as a higher ed professor and information from her dissertation about the experiences of other Black women faculty in New Mexico. Dr. Woodley challenges her students to "get their higher degrees" so they can take her place in teaching classes about race, class, and gender. She challenges her White colleagues to begin taking her place on the "front lines" of the struggle to end racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression.

Thank you for creating this honest but emotionally stressful video. I resonate a lot with your thoughts about cultural bias. As a multiracial person (Southeast Asian, Mexican, White), my experience changes when I switch contexts. When I was younger, these groups explained that I did not belong (some of these queues were overt, some were subtle). Rather than navigating the confusing narratives, I picked whatever "side" was convenient. The drawback of this strategy is that it can make you complacent. The end of your video has me thinking of how I can actively participate, even in small ways.

Hi @GradStudentTutorials, Thanks for the comment. You are talking about a phenomenon called "Code Switching." Most of us learned it as a survival strategy. We became masterful at switching codes, depending on the situation, in order to make it in different situations. It caused a sort of "cultural schizophrenia" for many of us which made it hard to relax in most cases. You are definitely not alone in experiencing that phenomenon. Thanks for sharing your experience and stay well, CS! ~Dr. X

Can I sue for racial battle fatigue?

    • @womanistscholar

Hi Angela, I'm not an attorney so I don't know if that is possible or not. Unfortunately, I think it is something that we all struggle with but can only find a remedy for on individual levels. A systemic change is what is needed but until racism is eradicated I'm not sure we will feel much relief mentally or emotionally. Thanks for the comment!

Very good comments and very valid. I’m in the corporate world and I had to teach my boss what “colored” and “code switching” unbelievable. This is so timely because most people see black woman as protesters. Take care Tura. Lori
